Denis Villeneuve Says ‘Dune 3’ Is ‘Not Like a Trilogy’ and Will Be His Last ‘Dune’ Movie: Other Directors Could Take Over So ‘I’m Not Closing the Door’ on the Franchise

“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve said of the first two “Dune” movies. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”

Dune: Prophecy
2024
6 Episodes

5.5/10

This series debuted November 2024. I binged it a couple weeks ago at home.

I have never read the books, so I went into the series blind.

The series takes place about 80 years after the war between humans/AI Machines and 10,000 years before the events of “Dune”.

The main premise is the Sisterhood’s origins, rise of power in the Imperium and their plans in maintaining control in the Imperium.

It’s a somewhat slow burn series with a lot of drama and talking. It’s heavy on character introductions/development. There isn’t anything for full blown shoot ‘em action or space ship fighting or anything.

There are a small amount of major characters that are focused on, which makes it easier to follow the series. A few twists are revealed with a few of the characters. Nothing extraordinary or exciting.

The character “Desmond Hart” is comedic with how they made him looked like a burnt out “Jax Teller” from “Sons of Anarchy”.

VFX/SFX, set designs are on movie level. Warner Bros. didn’t go the cheap route for this series.

Being there are only 6 episodes, it keeps the series on a good steady pace and focused. If it was a 10 episode series, it definitely would have bombed. “House of Dragons” and future series in that franchise should follow what they are doing with Dune: Prophecy and keep it short and compact.

Looking forward to Season 2.

"Something Completely Different": Denis Villeneuve Confirms Work on ‘Dune: Messiah’ Has Begun

Dune: Messiah will see Villeneuve adapting Herbert's novel Dune: Messiah and will mark the director's last adaptation in the franchise. While speaking in a recent interview with Deadline, Villeneuve gave a progress report saying, "I’m in the writing zone right now," then he reveals that he will "go back behind the camera faster than I think." The 2021 film began to chronicle the rise of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet). From the near utter destruction of House Atreides, to its terrifying re-emergence on the planet of Arrakis. Villeneuve goes on to add that the upcoming story will "finish the Paul Atreides
