oh they absolutely were...should’ve gone back maybe 15 years when the chappelle show hadn’t aired yet...but folks were already referring to him as a genius while the shit was still initially on the air

Today I saw an article from 2006 in "Esquire" that called him a "Genius", I don't remember that and didn't get that from watching him.

That's kinda why I labeled it "My Opinion".

So tell me about your "Facts" in this discussion.
the facts are that you cannot say he wasnt popular among Black people.

that goes outside the definition of opinion, as that statement is either a fact or not a fact.

the Black folks i hung around liked Chappelle. but i never said Black folks as a whole did.

cause thats not quantifiable.

I don’t like to use the word “genius” too loosely esp. when it comes to comedians but regardless of my personal feelings there were ppl referring to him as such once that show became popular

Nothing that you or I say is "Quantifiable", we're giving our opinion of what we saw and of our experience.

My experience is, he wasn't a comedian that many Black people spoke about or watched back then.

I lot of black folk didn't know who Chappelle was nor did they think he was funny before the show. He came up working in from of mostly white audiences before that.
He was like the white folks guide to black folk.

That's how I remember it. Black people won't fuckin wit dude. Mario Joyner use to be out then same type cat. Before the the show never heard anyone black say Chappelle was funny. Not saying he won't funny
but niggas won't checking for that shit.

Deray Davis stand up special was way better than Dave latest 2 efforts (one of the 2 specials was completely trash)

I have a question for you people that say he was not popular in the black community. Were you taking a survey on which comics were? Maybe ya'll just werent up on him :dunno:
Here's what's gunnt about what you're asking.
You folks are saying he was popular back then but did you or others take a survey??
Like I said earlier. I've followed Dave from about the beginning and thought he was funny back then. So that comment is irrelevant to me.

Maybe it was just the blacks in your very small limited circle of associates? I certainly knew alot of people who were fans before then. But either way, wheres the shame in him going more mainstream among all races when the show debuted? That was almost 15 years ago. Not sure how thats being painted as something negative.

This "Chappelle isn't funny" shit is silly. Maybe it's your taste? Some folks buy garden gnomes and think "this shit is clean as hell "... doesn't mean their taste is any good. Dave is considered a genius by other top tier comedians so there's not much to debate here. It's one thing to acknowledge that some of his specials are way stronger than others and another to suggest dude doesn't have "it". His 10 min unscripted bit with DL Hughley at the recent Def Jam thing is funnier than anything I've ever seen from Faison tbh.

Wtf is going on in here? I haven't read all the pages but are people saying that Dave wasn't funny back in the day? Have y'all seen him on Def Comedy Jam? Half Baked? Blue Streak? Nutty Professor? I tell you this, he's better than 3 of the 4 so called Kings of Comedy. Maybe even all of them. (B-Mac on DCJ >Dave though).

Who am I kidding. These same people probably find those IG skits entertaining.

The dude I quoted and myself are both fans of Chappelle. If you knew a bunch of black people who were huge fans and calling him geniuses an shit before the show came out then mybad I didn't. I posted his stand up that I remember watching from 93 to prove my point if you thought that shit was groundbreaking then OK.
He got white people on board then got the black people on board later. Won't being positive or negative just stated the facts from my memory.

Ok. Well i thought you overall point was that blacks wernt fans of his or knew who he was. I was telling you that you were absolutely wrong and probably just basing that off of your immediate circle. And you are right, no one was calling him genius in the 90s.. He was barely out of high school and just starting his career. But he was putting in work and developing a solid fan base of blacks and whites.. And again, he did Def Jam in the early 90s in front of nearly entirely black audience and destroyed it (go check it and see the N word bit).. Further proof that he was both funny, and known by black fanbase.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but some opinions are just flat out wrong. This is one.
So one of Dave specials wasn't completely trash? I had to cut the shit off went to read the reviews to see if I was buggin and its confirmed I wasn't buggin alot of ppl wasn't feelin it

A few days later while tuning into the breakfast club they all felt the same way and these are the ppl who praised his work at radio city hall

So don't act like my opinion is completely off I don't understand how u thought that shit was funny to be honest

Mfer was up there smoking a cigarette just saying nonsense after nonsense without no punchline at the end

me and my wife kept looking at each other like Wtf

Those 10 Minutes unscripted on def jam 25 probably was Dave funniest shit he done in awhile lol.

Bro, you said DeRay special was "way better" than Daves last two. Thats outlandish... 1) Deray being "way better" than anyone. 2) DeRay being "way better" than either, let alone both.

Also, if you're talking about the special where he was in the small venue sitting down smoking, you are fucking out to lunch. If you watched that and considered it nonsense without punchlines and structure you are either being dishonest, or just retarded.

Didnt listen but its clearly something personal Faizon has against the guy. So personal that hes willing to continue to make a complete ass of himself in the process.

It seems like Daves critics are all chitlin circuit guys. Him, Epps, and Aries have all been critical about him while implying that his success is due to white fanbase and not talent. Straight up crabs.

Crabs always try to deny the talent of others that can perform circles around them. Faizon comparing (i.e. "why wasn't Dave in the Friday movies?") Epps to Chappelle is utterly ridiculous. Dude even tryed to downplay Chappelle's writing and going back decades to to try to discredit his body of work. Get thee entire fuck out of here.

I lot of black folk didn't know who Chappelle was nor did they think he was funny before the show. He came up working in front of mostly white audiences before that.
He was like the white folks guide to black folk.

Nah, Dave was already battle tested in the stand up comedy circles with black audiences prior to doing any movies or having his own show with Comedy Central. Been in the game since he was 14. He just wasn't famous Dave back then.

Big Worm sounds salty as fuck. Honestly, Dave is way funnier than Spears, Epps, Faizon, etc. combined. Talent is talent.

Glad I watched this for myself.

The majority of conclusions drawn in this thread do not match mine.

First off, I f*cks with Faizon. I like him as a comedic and dramatic actor. I became a fan on Parenthood. Big Worm is a role I did not even recognize him in until YEARS after Friday came out.

Second, Faizon made many more accurate obsevations than not. I disagree with how he talked of Dave. Faizon is intelligent and should understand that Dave is a great human comedian. He is not a self proclaimed G.O.A.T., even though he ain't gonna argue with you, other comedic G.O.A.T.'s said he was, so who are we to argue it? He played his own talent in the beginning of the interview.

Lastly, he was right about damn near everything else: the murkiness of #metoo, Robert Townsend possibly not understanding his own power, whippin' ninjas asses on sight that rape, him not having the "look" for this time in Hollywood (talent always trumps IMO), and releasing your sh!t independently.

Not for one minute am I agreeing Dave is a kept comedian for white people...based on his work, the sh!t don't even sound right.

Yeah...

You, Sir, understand comedy.

I have ALWAYS rocked with Cedric the Entertainer since he hosted Comic View. He was my favorite off of Kings of Comedy.

Aside from sheer talent and walking away from 50M deal to not have his art compromised / corporate controlled, he never felt the need to put "King", "Lord of Lords", etc. on any stand up specials he marketed yet light years beyond the ones that feel the need to give themselves "#1 titles" to validate their product. This is why comics like Dave are universally respected.

Aside from the "Dave not funny" shock value or bitterness, not sure what his angle is with that, honestly, the rest of the interview was good.

 I mess with Faizon's comedy/ movies. Same with old Katt.

I don't mess with Dave, personally. People respond to different brands. And a lot of people love Chapelle's work. Faizon just needs to accept it and move on.
