This is why The Commodores broke up. I was reading an interview with Ronald LePread (bassist), and he was saying that him bringing one or two of those type of songs was cool, but then, Lionel started bringing too many of those songs to the band, and they were like "We're a funk/soul band. Why are you brining us these songs?", and he said Lionel didn't want to do that type of music anymore. He wanted to appeal to another audience.
That's really interesting to get that background.

Remembering "Sail On". He was always trying to expand the boundaries, when you think about it.

You know, I can't really knock him for what he wanted to do or what he did. I just hated how he verbalized his intent in that interview. He ended up having much greater success as a solo artist and as a songwriter for others. His crossover stuff never appealed to me, for the most part. But I respected his ability to write strong catchy pop songs. When people reminisce about top Black artists of the 80s, Michael and Prince's names are thrown around a lot, but you don't hear Lionel's. He was HUGE in the 80s. Rick James doesn't get proper respect either.

That's the first song I ever heard of theirs. Loved it then, love it still.
