Oh I totally agree with this statement....Living here in DC for the last 20 years I guess I have a greater appreciation for the bus and metro system...The main bus routes run 23 hours a day (5am -4am)...
I think growing up my DAD rode the bus in Columbia, SC and I know for a fact that major cities have a better bus system than that....Even when I was in college in Winston Salem people rode the bus....I think that's why I am advocate for living close to your job or within the city limits (again only coming from the perspective of living in DC and living in the city limits of Columbia, SC)....
Push come to shove and my car isn't working, yeah I might add an extra hour to my commute, but I could always walk to a nearby bus stop and get to work....

I can relate to this because I did the same thing when I was in graduate school....I was killing that metro going back and forth from home to school...

A few yrs back, I wanted to strangle the folks at metro when they were doing that single tracking crap or closing stations all together because they had fallen behind on maintenance. I was working in Bethesda at the time & I live about 2 blocks from the CUA station.
