About time: On Tuesday, Spike Lee, 61, received his first ever Best Director Oscar nomination for last year's BlacKkKlansman

Jackson shot his video from a cozy bedside vantage as his famous father paced around anxiously in front of a TV set.

The audio from the TV could be faintly heard, and as soon as the announcers uttered BlacKkKlansman's name, the director jumped up in the air.

His son rushed up with his camera held aloft to high-five the overjoyed filmmaker.

Better late than never: Despite having directed a prolific string of modern classics like Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn and 25th Hour, Spike has been passed over year after year by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science — until now; pictured in Santa Monica on January 13

'I'm not coming!': Spike Lee explains why he's skipping Oscars

Despite having directed over two dozen features, including a prolific string of modern classics like Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn and 25th Hour, Spike has been passed over year after year by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science, even as some of his films have been nominated in other categories.

It's fitting that Spike finally received a nomination for BlacKkKlansman, as the police thriller garnered some of the best reviews of his career. It currently boasts a 95 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and among the site's top critics it has a rare 100 percent positive score.

The film is based on the true story of Ron Stallworth, the first black detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department. He concocted a plan to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan outpost via phone.

Denzel Washington's son John David Washington, 34, played Stallworth in the film, and Adam Driver, 35, played the white officer who posed as him in public.

Them and that award.....I would put that shit in a box in the basement cause this is long over due and the gate keepers wanted that way,so let em have it because it will mean more to them than it would to Spike who's body of work will outlast them, him and that award.

White validation is a beast lol. Should have just sat there and said, cool.

You think Robert Downey jumping up and down for a honorary bet award?

You think anyone actually jumps up and down for a Bet award?

Despite their lack of diversity (putting it mildly) an Oscars is still the most prestigious award available when it comes to film so his joy isn't a matter of white acceptance it's about being acknowledged and validated by your peers regardless of race as one of the best at your respective craft.

I’m surprised Spike reacted like this and even worse, taped this reaction.

After getting fucked all these years by racist assed Hollyweird why would he need their validation?

Now I’m hoping he don’t win the shit, he may come off worse than Cuba Gooding Jr. when he accepts that shit.

peers? Uh do you know the makeup of the academy that determines who is nominated? It's not a democratic process with SAG members lol

Peace,

Cats who are in here criticizing Spike for his reaction have clearly never had their work recognized by the preeminent organization in their field of work.
I'm glad, he's not too cool for school. Spike is passionate and should have had that Best Director Nom back in the 80s for Do The Right Thing or in the 90s for Malcolm X. I'm glad he isn't bitter, and that's a salute to him.

Its simply about money. That award brings in more jobs almost instantly.
Nah it doesn't. You don't get to be Will Smith or Tom Hanks from Oscars. Ya get that when you simply put asses in the seats. Oscars are just really nice awards. Actors and actresses who jack their prices up after winning one end up sitting at home.

Spike Lee is a great marketer , and.used to be a great film maker, so he's been having court side seats for years. He's an icon regardless. But congrats. Always good to get the look.

Kevin Hart will probably NEVER win an Oscar but when he's in a movie , IT SELLS.
