You guys thinking spike is looking for his career to be validated. Maybe he’s not. Maybe this is a childhood dream. Maybe, before he even got hirst first break, he made this a goal. Maybe he watched the oscars every year, saw sydney poitier accept his oscar and dreamt of the day he followed in those footsteps.

That aside, imo Spike's penchant for overdirecting is the reason why he hasn't been nominated for best director before now. Not saying his films haven't been good, it's just that he steps on his product by overly preaching to his audience at times.

Yeah, but people very often win for roles that aren't their best.

Look, I love Denzel, I'm glad he got an Oscar, and there's nothing at all wrong with his performance in Training Day (he put in work like he always does). But it is nowhere near what I'd consider his best performance. Hell, I barely like the movie.

Same with Monster's Ball and Halle Berry. She was a more convincing and more compelling hoodrat in BAPS. Yes, I said that.

Sometimes the Oscars are about making a statement. Hell, more often than not they're about making a statement. So you take your nods and you take your wins for what they are. And even if you know that it's a game of PR and politics and social jousting, you still take some pride in getting there.
