Ok, I just watched the clip...he has a fair point. Our hip hop scene is old, started from the early early 80's with Maestro, Michie Mee, Dream warriors etc. but there's a few reasons why we haven't had a specific unifying sound until recently, but mainly it's because record labels wouldn't really back canadian artists unless they could cross over or get some buzz in America so most acts were forced to work with American producers or craft a sound that could crossover.
Because of our cultural mosaic you could identify a Toronto rapper through the slang and dialect but not the beats....our sound leaned more towards East Coast boom bap in the 90's....like that Mathematik track, i posted up top..
"So far gone" "House of Balloons" etc. really cemented a certain Toronto sound but it's new and developed at a time when there are way more "open borders" as far as musical exportation in the present day due to the internet and shit. If we had crafted that sound in the early 90's like most other regions -(G Funk, bounce music, Miami Bass etc.) or so it would be more cemented and more easily identifiable
You couldn't have crafted that sound in the early 90s because it was largely adapted from the mid/late 90s sound that emerged from Da Bassment/DeVante/Timbaland/Missy/Static/Aaliyah, etc.
Nah
We can save this debate for another thread, but 50 was never a great rapper. Flow, voice, lyrics, wordplay....nothing. He was just a generic B-rate NY rapper.
40 is disgruntled because he feels Drake doesn’t give him enough credit for his successJa was always a superior rapper to 50.
This! Dude can literally pass for being Latino and even Arab, so his music career is far from being done. Gunna and 6ix9ine weren't impacted by that "snitching" shit that hit them. Most women don't care. Reality is that losing a "hip-hop battle" or losing "streed cred" isn't really impactful to any rappers these days. All Drake needs is another club hit for the summer and he'll be fine.
How did he shit on 40?

Nah
Ja was diet DMX though
Shit usually goes this way in the industry. Somebody always ends up being upset about something. Look at the NeptunesDamn what more do he want?
EVERYONE knows him name
There were crazy think pieces written about his genius and his perfection in crafting pockets for real MCs to sound great. In fancy music and engineering websites and magazines. Giving that white man mad credit "maybe" even too much for drake's success.
If 40 really salty? No wonder Drake never trusts anyone.

I think it'll have a huge legacy outside of rap it'll have a chance to be canon in so many different waysQuestion:
When it's all said and done, will Not Like Us have the same legacy as Hit 'Em Up??
It's a bit soon to ask I know, but a year or 2 from now, what do you think?
@largebillsonlyplease you definitely need to weigh in here
@TheFuser @playahaitian @REDLINE you guys too

They not like us will just be a term we use for outsiders
Teams will employ it etc
Time will tell if it lasts all summer then absolutely

nah -I want something to be said also for the record...
Kendrick tracks were VERY much based on Takeover rather than ether.
nah -
it was handed down
from tae-bo hoe
to o-v-hoe
from only concerned with dissing women
to not speak on Serena
from you a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a stan
to he a fan, he a fan, he a Freaky-ass nigga
Same here, especially what he said about Drake's fans.
Takeover lacked creativity and artdisagree
Smarten up nas
Lame
Half a bar
I can do math
Cole fumbled but K perfected it and took from ALL the greats
I'm just saying Takeover always been the BETTER song and then Drake made actual songs against Meek and now K
Takeover lacked creativity and art
who leads with money? materialism claiming social proof?
vs who raps culture?
blueprint2 is what y'all should really be holding up
culture says - no one would ever accuse Jay of rapping like he trying to free the slaves....

Drake only knows his blackness as something to profit from@REDLINE @Tdot_firestarta
I never considered the Pac Drake comparison till just now
Drake never truly felt loved accepted and embraced by his people like Pac.
Pac was able to accepted as a conflicted individual. Love women but still call them bitch and hoes. Thug intellectual revolutionary gang banger poet bully.
I dint think ANYONE ELSE can ever be ALLOWED to exist in all those spaces anymore.
And I think Drake foolishly thought he could kinda be the Rock of rap.
Without ever paying that black tax for REAL.
better writer - not sure about rapperJa was always a superior rapper to 50.
Drake only knows his blackness as something to profit from
to compare him to Pac is almost ignorant
Pac was surrounded in blackness - and was never allowed to forget who he was
his folks were openly hunted and or killed by the federal gov't
Pac was able to exist in all spaces because
-Pac always knew what Jay Z couldn't know when he wrote:
Is it One Mic or is it Oohchie Wally?
