Driver in fatal crash smoked weed because he was 'upset over Kobe Bryant passing away,' police say

One person has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide in connection with a car crash that killed two people in Memphis on Sunday night.

According to police documents, Charles Jones, 38, "smoked some weed earlier due to being upset over Kobe Bryant passing away."

Jones, who is also facing charges of disregarding a stop red light, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

The victims who died as a results of the collision have been identified as 54-year-old Sonja Roser and 51-year-old Christopher Hunt.

The fatal crash occurred at the intersection of South Third Street and Raines Road at approximately 5:40 p.m., according to police.

Police documents say Jones was driving northbound on South Third Street towards the Raines Road intersection when he drove over the center lane into southbound lanes and proceeded to make a left turn while the light was red.

While turning, Jones' vehicle struck the vehicle occupied by Roser and Hunt head-on.

The two victims were rushed to Regional One Hospital, but did not survive their injuries.

Police said footage from a nearby Walgreens shows Jones crossing into the southbound lanes and turning at a high rate of speed.

Jones is currently in custody and will be arraigned by video on Jan 28.

sad as fuck...

and i grew up priding myself on being the biggest kobe hater as a kid...

It wasn't until I grew into manhood that I really started to appreciate the time, effort and overall grind he put into everything he did...

I met him last season when my former boss introduced me at the practice facility

"Kobe I want you to meet two of my new guys, Kris and Jarvis"

Kobe: What's up fellas
Me: How are you Kobe
Kobe: What's your name again? Kris. Nice to meet you

Then daps me up before going to talk to my boss...
:crying:
I'll never forget that little quick exchange...And everytime it was in passing and I said hello he always spoke back...

Props to Kobe being a real one, never switching up

Yeah I wasn’t the biggest Kobe person either. But you would never hear me say he wasn’t a great player. And then I heard on the Foxxhole podcast where Jamie said he and his friends had a chance to hang out with Kobe and they all started talking trash. He said Kobe gave that shit right back. And I think all the trash talk ended when Kobe said something to the effect of, “I’m on my way to the gym right now.”

Jamie, who wasn’t a big Kobe guy himself, said “Kobe’s a real one.” I respected what he did even more after that.

Kobe: just want to say fuck the nba for not giving me the mvp one particular year and giving it to the most overrated mvp award winner Steve nash... I lead the league in scoring.. Dropped 40 point of more 20+ games.. Did it 9 straight games.. Took 1 of the shittiest teams ever to the playoffs... I had luke fucking walton, kwame brown, smush parker on my team the fact I got out of bed to put the same jersey on as those losers was a miracle and actually won games with those bums... That in itself should've gave me an mvp
well said.

Getting all emotional and putting people on ignore for a celebrity that you never met or spoke to in life is crazy. Think about this for a second. If you died or a family member died Kobe would have went on about his day as normal.

I am to sad that Kobe died and I wish it was all a dream but my Brothas, Get a damn back bone.

For the brothas with the conspiracies just create another thread so those who want to talk, discuss or possibly educated can while having respect for others who don’t want to talk about it

You always been a bitch ass nigga.

Was Kobe a licensed helicopter pilot?

Where was he sitting on that helicopter? In the back with the passengers or in the co-pilot seat? Where was his daughter sitting? In the back with the passengers or in the co-pilot seat?

If Kobe or his daughter were at the controls of that chopper and they are not licensed, even for training...that changes the narrative of this story.

Not hearing anything on this in the news.

We will find out when the NTSB finishes their investigation.
I'm sure with the conditions of the weather, that wasn't a training moment. Especially if they had to request special permission to even fly

Listening to sports radio, and these white folk and feminists are not letting that rape case go away.

Oh it gets worser..

on WFAN this white man called in and said he disagreed

that the players needed to play the game

the host was like I understand maybe even Kobe would WANT that

but just because Kobe would have WANTED that?

doesn't mean its the best thing, players were visibly shaken up and upset and emotional you weren't going to get there best.

This cac says well if I buy a ticket and make plans they supposed to play

The host says..OK but they were sobbing and..

the cac begins to LAUGH

Host is like WTF? you laughing about?

Those people get paid MILLIONS to play.

So I don't care how many wet eyes I see?

I KNOW how these white folks feel about Black athletes in PARTICULARLY..

so all these sports heads getting emotional about fathers and children and senseless death?

ALL hated on Kaepernick for saying the SAME DAMN THING.

BGOL is soft now.

If people want to mourn and cry or feel great sadness. Cool

If people want to talk about conspiracies that is cool also.

I don’t get into all the conspiracies because that is not my thing but that does not mean someone is not impacted by the death of Kobe because they are discussing some conspiracies

If people don’t feel anything from his passing is fine also

Y’all Brothas are trying to control the conversations to much on BGOL making it like an old folks home or some country club vibe

Kobe Bryant would have kneeled in support of Kaepernick if he was still playing at time of quarterback's protest
Bryant was never politically active in his career, however, he began voicing his political opinion after retiring in 2016, unlike other NBA legends before him.

Colin Kaepernick was one of the first to mourn the loss of Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash on Sunday. It was fitting as the controversial ex NFL player, who triggered controversy with his divisive kneeling during games, found consistent support from the late NBA legend amidst the outrage that ensued after his decision.
"I would have participated in it, for sure," Bryant once stated in support of former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick's infamous national anthem protest. "I am sure I would have got some flak for it. That’s fine."
Bryant was never politically active in his career, however, he began voicing his political opinion after retiring in 2016, unlike other NBA legends before him. The basketball star, who left the association just months before Kaepernick's protest, in an interview with The Undefeated in 2018, had said that if he were still in uniform, he definitely would have protested in solidarity with Kaepernick's message.

"I think that Colin’s message was a very simple one. It was police brutality needs to stop. We need to take a look at that," Bryant said.

Kaepernick stirred national controversy in 2016, in an effort to protest against reported police brutality against black people in the country. Other players soon took his cue and joined the protest in the 2016 season by taking a knee during the national anthem. There are several others who have continued the protest till now. Kaepernick's movement, however, drew heavy criticism from many, including President Donald Trump, who even called for the owners of the NFL teams to fire the players who were participating in it.
Bryant believed in what Kaepernick stood for and his right for peaceful protest. The NBA star, while answering the outlet's question on what the situation would have been in his team if he had protested, said: "I don't think any of the players I have played with would have an issue with it. I think we understand this is a free country, I think we have a right for peaceful protest. In my point of view, that is what the flag represents as well."

"The ability to speak, the ability to voice your opinion. Everybody is entitled to that," he had said. "If there are people up in arms about it, they certainly have the right to do that as well. As we certainly have the right to protest peacefully."
Colin Kaepernick #7 and Eric Reid #35 of the San Francisco 49ers kneel in protest during the national anthem prior to playing the Los Angeles Rams in their NFL game at Levi's Stadium on September 12, 2016 in Santa Clara, California.
As the NFL quarterback received mounting criticism for his activism — receiving a near-total blackout from the league — Bryant always remained supportive of Kaepernick. The Los Angeles Lakers believed that Kaepernick is "the epitome of doing what he believes is right," and had lauded his "bravery" during an interview with the ESPN. The 41-year-old also donated to the quarterback's fundraising campaign, saying: "It is very hard as a black athlete to simply sit here."

When asked about which black athlete's leadership impressed him in current times, the Los Angeles Lakers legend had said: "Colin Kaepernick."
"He is the epitome of doing what he believes is right," Bryant told ESPN. "Things have been taken out of context and the message he wanted to send across misconstrued. Having the bravery to be able to do that, we should all stand for it."
Kaepernick and Bryant were both Nike athletes, and the latter also backed the popular sports brand's support of the quarterback in September 2019, saying he was not surprised by it. Nike had received an immediate backlash in September 2018, after the brand had announced Kaepernick as the face of its Just Do It campaign.
The players' reciprocative support was reflective in Kaepernick's tweet honoring the NBA legend after his tragic death on Sunday, January 26. Bryant died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. The chopper was carrying his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant, and seven others. None survived the fatal crash.

"I will remember Kobe as a basketball legend, a father & a man," Kaepernick tweeted late Sunday night. "Watching him & Gigi share their relationship with us is something I won't ever forget. My heart aches for his wife, children & family. I hope the waves of love being sent to his family can ease some of the pain they feel."
Meanwhile, Bryant's advocacy of Kaepernick's message will continue to live on after his death, with the player predicting the quarterback's rise to the top again.
"He’ll get his shot," Bryant said. "There are a lot of people out there who want to see him fail, and he is not going to. He’ll rise to the top again, and everyone will look back and say what a great story he was. That's what going to happen."

Updated article from TMZ detailing the errors the pilot made that caused this:

COPTER PILOT MISJUDGED TERRAIN... Didn't Slow Down, Pilots Say

The pilot of the helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant, his daughter and 6 other passengers got in big trouble with fog -- they seemed to abort the trip and tried returning home, barely clearing one mountain range, but never slowed down ... this according to the flight tracker and several experienced helicopter pilots in the L.A. area.
As we reported, the pilot had to circle near the Downtown L.A. area -- near the L.A. Zoo -- for 15 minutes because of bad weather ahead. As we reported ... the LAPD had grounded its helicopter fleet because of fog at around the same time Kobe's helicopter took off.

The pilot was following a visual flight plan and was cleared by the tower to proceed north, toward Thousand Oaks where Kobe was taking his daughter for a basketball game. When he got to the Calabasas area, the fog became blinding.

As we reported, the pilot was way too low -- at 1,250 feet. The pilots we spoke with say it's clear based on the abrupt change on the flight tracker ... the pilot panicked and quickly ascended to 2,000 feet. We're told he cleared a mountain range by 100 feet, and the pilots we spoke with say he was so low he almost certainly saw the tops of the mountain.

The pilots we spoke with -- all of whom have extensive experience -- say based on the flight tracker and the accident scene, they believe the pilot felt he had cleared all of the mountains and was proceeding to head back when he hit another mountain. The pilot clearly did not know there were mountains ahead because he actually descended from 2,000 feet to 1,700 feet .. presumably to go under the fog.

Even more baffling, we've been told the pilot was extremely experienced flying in that area -- and was even a flight instructor. One seasoned helicopter pilot told TMZ, he could not understand why Kobe's pilot would have maintained a speed of 161 knots in such dense fog. One of the benefits of a helicopter is you can go much slower -- even 15 mph -- to gingerly avoid terrain if you're uncertain.
Our sources say the chopper was sophisticated and had an altitude warning signal to pull up, but it was too late. As we said, he was doing 161 knots and didn't slow down. The helicopter hit the mountain at that speed.

Several of the pilots we spoke with say the pilot should have gone up to clear the fog, rather than down. To that end, we're told the pilot could have slowed down to almost a stop as he turned, but didn't.
