I thought you were talking about the comments in the thread.

The article doesn't break down a specific numbers but does it really matter?

Regardless if they sold the "savage europeans" one thousand slaves or one million slaves - they STILL sold the "savage europeans" slaves.

nobody is denying that even though the source of the article is shady,

just sayin its no excuse or comparison to what the savage europeans did, especially to a people that literally saved their lives...

whether you want to admit it or not, the reason for the post,

is to justify european chattel slavery by saying see africans sold other africans into slavery...

deep down inside you know this to be true, but would you be man enough to admit it, is the question...

this Akata knows what he is talkin bout son!!

:eek2: They were burying slaves alive? Slaves couldn't love or make love? CACs didn't even do that...

Our own people made the Amazon for slavery :smh::smh::smh::smh::smh:

and you're killing BGOL narrative that our african ancestors were a peaceful, loving group incapable of savagery before exposure to CACs

A lot of the Black folks on BGOL already knew Africans played a role in Slavery.

The OP is more so trolling, not educating, a certain segment of BGOL. And also finding solace in sarcastic bs replies, like the one from yourself, and other White trolls on BGOL; who find it easier to point the finger than accept accountability.

I like how you know what "a lot of black folks on bgol" already knew. You came in here to reply to a reply- not with info , but some snarky ass reply about what you already knew and then what other people's intentions are.

Now if I provided info and you didn't, which one of us is trolling again?

what are you talkin about, there goes your questionable reading comprehension skills again,

the article discussed how slaves were sold to through a 'pipe line' to brazilian and PORTUGUESE export...

you do know where portugal is I hope....

major players in the atlantic slave trade, they built the first slave fort in Ghana in the late 1400s...

In fact they pretty much had the leading role...

again the portuguese was mentioned in the original post..

so what the fuck are you talkin about...?

I, me, a black man:

  • Never heard about blacks involvement the slave trade in Lagos
  • Never thought we could be so brutal to our own (women decapitated for getting pregnant?!)
  • Didn't know about the British involvement in ending the slave trade in Europe
  • Never heard about any of the people named in the original article, or the books referenced
I was being slightly overdramatic because I thought it was an interesting thread and I didn't want to see it drop to the 54th page without any real discussions, debate, or links to more info from either side.

As far as being easier to point the finger, take a look at your boy Freddie's post...

You would think this would be easy to discuss since it has nothing to do with europeans. It's literally the stuff movies are made out of. It's black history. It's west African history. You can look at it and be any character in the story. There's TONS of interesting west African history that I like looking at. Even the story of Mansa Musa , who has been posted several times - the richest man who ever lived- had slaves. Thousands of them. If you tell his story ya gotta involve that. If there's a movie done on him ya gotta show that. I dunno if he did what these people did , but it's a part of his story, clear As day. I dunno why we can't talk ALL of it. The quicker we get that part out of the way, the quicker we can move to the other stuff. I certainly wouldn't wanna ignore it.

Now even in the story of Lagos, the writer was getting to who he views as the TRUE founding fathers , those who fought against the trade- wo were also african.

James Pinson Labulo Davies- look up his wife, Sarah Frobes Bonetta Davies. Beautiful woman.hes the guy who brought the cocoa industry to west africa, which Ghana and Cote d voire now turn out the most in the world.

Samuel Ajayi Crowther, who also wrote the history of the Yoruba people. Great book.

There are others, but those two have an incredible story.

Oh yeah, on the American side, Martin Delany , who I posted about before as well (totally ignored thread) travelled there and arranged to have land for african americans, but plans changed before he pulled it off. He wrote books on it as well.

See this is dope.

Real talk, from the start I've been totally open to hearing other sides too if there are posters that had any other quotes, articles, or books that might have spoken from the other side of the Lagos slave trade. Or if there was more to the British imperialism than ending slavery.

But no, (predictably) It didn't go that way.

Thanks OP.

Yeah there DEFINITELY is more to why the British wouldve wanted to end the slave trade but as we said before - that's a whole nother thread. If we had a wealth of discussions on this with FACTS we could get into all that, but as you can see, people have knee jerk responses Around here. All this was going on around not long after the different rebellions in the caribbean and Brazil and american south. All this was going on during the work of Frederick douglass, Martin Delany, nat turner, Denmark vesey, the early years of Haiti coming into its own, all of that. Why wouldn't we wanna talk about African kingdoms? This is just the tip of it, and I purposely picked out the parts I think would interest people but the article isn't really just about those slave traders really. It's about Lagos and nigeria founding fathers on the western side. Honestly, even the slave traders eventually moved into other businesses and fought the British on their unfair British practices, which also led to nationalism. This is why Madame Tinubu has a square named after her in Lagos today. I dunno man, it's history. What can ya do?

This guy. Got a boat and WENT to Africa (liberia). Met up with James Davies and got on his boat to get to Lagos. Spoke to some of the same chiefs mentioned in the article. Wrote a book on what he saw. Got land agreements in abeokuta.

It's funny cuz that other thread the Haitian guy talked about the beginning of black nationalism- all that starts here in this time.

Did you read the article? This is the first paragraph:

“Merchant sailor, businessman, farmer, pioneer industrialist, patriot, statesman, churchman, missionary and philanthropist,” so begins Adeyemo Elebute in this fabulous new book, The Life of James Pinson Labulo Davies: A Colossus of Victorian Lagos. What is missing in these opening monikers is “founding father.”

It should be obvious to you just from reading that introduction what the article will primarily be about.

No?

Ok. Lets talk numbers - specifically # of mentions in the article:

  • Europe - 4
  • Portugal -4
  • British -25
  • Nigeria -22
  • Lagos- 46
Bro, just stop.

Youve posted stuff like this on the board countless of times. The outcome has been the same more times than not.

You type what you type, people come in and try to digress by typing about white people, u attack them for doing it, then u create another thread doing the exact same thing all over again.

what info is there to add? Based off how many times you've beaten this dead horse on BGOL, it's obvious that your mind is already made up. Others minds are obviously made up as well. Cause the direction of these threads never change.

Could call it "bringing balance to the topic, but I see it as useless back and forth bs, while u troll with the topic.

It's still summer. Go fishing or something.

Please tell me why I should ever care what you think of what I post? Im sure you remember me asking you that. Couldve been you, but really I don't pay attention to which one of you dumbasses I'm talking to.

Clearly it's information to everyone in here who responded besides you. All you came in here to do is tell me that you don't like it, and you actually think I care. Lol that's amazing. You know what to do about threads you don't like , right? Dont come in.

Everybody knows it and it's nothing new but I can guarantee you can't find any of this shitin this article ANYWHERE on this board from anyone at anytime. And if it's nothing new it shouldn't bother you. But here you are on another thread crying about some shit you can simply ignore. Unbelievable.

And to answer your question of what is there to add to all this? A whole history of West africa from the 19th century on back. Shit that is NEVER talked about on a black board full of supposed pan Africanists. Some of it will be good (even in this thread) and some not so good, but you can't take it if it aint flowery and cute.

Why would you think that's what the article is saying when clearly the AFRICANS the article is primarily about didn't do this at all?

And it's not a CAC who wrote this- it's a guy who's actually Yoruba. I even posted a MOVIE telling the story of ONE of them , and it's a Yoruba classic. None of them deny these people existed. .but nooooo, anything said that you don't like HAD to come from white people. You guys are really strange. If we're not saying EVERYBODY was a king or a queen you get all in your feelings. How can we move forward with this kinda limited ass thinking?

The article is clearly about a review of book about a guy who WAS NOT a slave trader. The part about the traders was in response to the EXISTING FAMILY of a slave trader , and it was to illustrate SOME of the things that went on by SOME people. I guess it hurts cuz there are some of you who would like to think it didn't happens at all.

It's a whole article dude. If you read it , you'd know that. And again, the only person talking about white people on this thread is you.

The article isn't even about the British. It's about who the book review is about. James pinson Labulo Davies. And how HE should be regarded as one of the founding fathers of Nigeria, instead of Or in addition to some of the others- some of whom happen to have been slave traders.

yet here you go, trying to GUESS what the post is about, when there's a whole article that tells you straight up.

And lol at "I know the history of the Yorubas more than you!"

You brought up Europe. You continue to bring up Europe. Europe is not a important part of the story in the OP. You would know that if you read it.

I'm not answering ANY questions in this thread that don't pertain to the discussion about the story the OP posted. You have a personal question to ask me? Start another thread.

blah blah blah blah, you are insanely retarded...

Dope. I downloaded a Martin Delany book and the History or Yoruba people book last night which was free, and damn near free ( $.99) when you "buy" the digital copy on amazon.

I'm gonna start there, and hopefully I'll come across the book in the OP in the fall.
