Oct 16 (Reuters) - Former One Direction singer Liam Payne died outside a hotel in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, local newspaper La Nacion reported on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old British musician was found dead after falling from the hotel's third floor, it said, citing emergency services.

Several witnesses at the hotel where he was staying in Buenos Aires tell us Liam fell from his room on the 3rd floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel. We do not know if it was intentional or accidental.

Witnesses say this happened shortly after 5 PM in Buenos Aires ... and that Liam had been acting erratic in the hotel lobby earlier -- he smashed his laptop, and had to be carried back to his room.

It's a crap shoot, but sometimes you can survive from a third floor fall unless the fall was on his head.

Reminds me of this: However on 29th floor there was no chance of survival....

Cheslie Kryst, the 2019 Miss USA, died by suicide after jumping from a Manhattan apartment building on January 30, 2022

Kryst, 30, was last seen on the 29th floor of the 60-story Orion building on 42nd Street. She jumped around 7:15 AM and was pronounced dead at the scene

On 16 October 2024, Payne died after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of 31.[160][161][162] Police were called to the hotel following an emergency call from the hotel manager, who reported "an aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol".[160][163] The manager indicated in the call that "when he is conscious he is destroying the entire room and we need you to send someone", noting that the man's life was at risk due to the room having a balcony.[163][164] Payne fell from the balcony shortly after emergency services arrived.[165] His death was confirmed at 5:11 p.m. Argentina Time (UTC−03:00).[160][166] The emergency medical team that arrived at the hotel reported a "cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries" that led to Payne's immediate death.[162][167]

Alberto Crescenti, director of Buenos Aires' public emergency medical service, announced Payne's death on the Argentine news channel TN, stating that the fall was from a height of approximately 13 to 14 metres (43 to 46 ft) and that Payne sustained "very serious injuries incompatible with life", leaving "no possibility of resuscitation".[160][164] Crescenti declined to comment on whether the death was a suicide or an accident.[164][168] Pablo Policicchio, communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, stated that Payne "had jumped from the balcony of his room". Authorities are investigating Payne's death, and a post-mortem is being conducted.[164] Police later said that several medications and energy supplements were found in his room, including clonazepam, and that a whiskey bottle was found in the courtyard where his body was recovered.[169] Initial post-mortem examination indicated that Payne died from internal and external hemorrhages and multiple traumatic injuries.[169][170] The forensic experts reported 25 injuries caused by the fall and stated that Payne's traumatic brain injuries were "enough to cause death", with the bleeding in his head and upper body also contributing to his death. The examination found no signs of a fight and noted that Payne was alone in the room at the time of his death.[171][172]

You got it, man.

I was talking to a friend of mine last night & he mentioned Payne's death at the start of the call. I was saying unfortunately all signs seemed to be pointing towards suicide.

He was like - "Nah ... it's only the 3rd story though. Usually people do so from way higher."

To paraphrase a helicopter I replied - "Yeah, but this is real life though, and not the movies. People die from smaller falls due to severe injuries. Whether intentional or accidental. Who knows the psychological / physiological state he was in. And this isn't Russia either ... people aren't just randomly falling down staircases, or off balcony ledges."

(* Side note ... remembered after the call that someone died from a cranial fracture & internal bleeding at an old workplace some years back (I had worked there about 10 - 12 years prior to the incident). They jumped / fell from the 2nd story of a house and landed on grass.

I think that's why I've always been weary when seeing people get hammered off alcohol and / or drugs while on vacation ... then returning to a hotel or high-rise and calling it a night while out of sorts. A much safer place to be would be a ground-level AirBnb. Preferably with people around to keep an eye on them and their status)

Yeah, I remember hearing cases of people getting drunk and falling off cruise ships to their eventual deaths and the cruise won't even stop for them to if they could still be alive. In sum, high places and getting drunk or high does not mix.

Indeed.

I’ve been to Mexico a few times. In late-2018 my bro went out for a date with a lady he met on Tinder, lol. He got back to the hotel at 3:30am drunk as a skunk having trouble finding the washroom in a 2nd story hotel room. Walking around like an old man.

Told him the next day to be careful out there. You’re just asking to get set up / robbed wandering home downtown after 3am post pursuit of vacay pussy.

I'm your bro didn't get set up; it's dangerous out there without a homie to look out for you in your missions to get women....

Apparently she was a 35yo single mom of 3.

I questioned his decision-making on that one and was glad he didn’t fall off the balcony while trying to locate the toilet to void.

Man, back in the day....I met this chick at a night club in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe; we took a taxi back to her campground. Her and her sister was staying there temporarily, they were from Botswana. Yeah, I fucked the chick; however now that I'm older....I think about I could have been an easy mark and she could have had her team ready to run my pockets....lol. There is something special about the ignorance of youth.
