What I think is obvious, though, is Hulk was both well-known and audience-tested prior to the MCU due to Lou Ferrigno's portrayal and Ang Lee's '03 film.

Captain America was probably more of a gamble since he really didn't have a successful live-action portrayal or cartoon for a long time before he debuted in the MCU. But he did have name recognition.

All of the other MCU characters were basically only known to geeks like us.

You know that's a good point. I always find it fascinating what our culture chooses to "ghettoize" and put into a corner.

In the 40s, men in the service read comics in between fighting Nazis and Imperial Japanese but that culture died in the post war years. Comics were regarded as a medium solely for children and regulated as such.

As for today's generation, they have a ton of cultural freedom. They're not aware of it because they're basically ignorant about recent history.

Man, I had dudes like my brother and uncle who were more likely to listen to Metallica and Van Halen than Public Enemy or NWA. They were still Black though and knew the hood.

TBH, I don't even think you see that type of independence even today for the most part.

I agree with this. They'll probably even bring back The Leader. They teased him in '08 but we haven't seen him since. It wouldn't make sense to have a hero with the mind of a child take on and beat a supergenius.

Not to mention, Hulk was way too one-dimensional before Ragnarok. After that movie he developed a character that has evolved to where he's currently at.
