Breakout fight for Paschall

Just by being involved in the August 2 nationally-televised co-feature bout, Mike “The Persecutor” Paschall already considers himself a winner. However, the undefeated, 28-year-old Baltimore, MD super middleweight prospect (17-0-1, 7 KOs) still feels confident that he will make a big splash in front of a Showtime Championship Boxing audience when he takes on undefeated 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell (15-0, 10 KOs) at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA. “After all I’ve been through – being shot and stabbed and being in gang fights – Dirrell is nothing to fear,” Paschall said. “I’m going to truly enjoy this. I’m a winner already because no one thought I could do this.”

Rahman-Toney result changed

The result of the July 16 James Toney vs. Hasim Rahman bout at the Pechanga Resort in Temecula, California, has been changed following an appeal by the Rahman camp. Originally ruled a technical knockout win for Toney, the California State Athletic Commission has now changed the result of the bout to a no-decision. Armando Garcia, Executive Director of the California State Athletic Commission, said ".....I have reviewed (Rahman's) appeal and have determined that the wrong decision was rendered on the night of the event. Therefore, the bout will be ruled a No Decision." Bob Arum of Top Rank called it a "true and just result. I want to commend the California Commission and particuarly its Executive Director, Armando Garcia, for handling this situation so expeditiously and for having the courage to reverse a decision made the night of the fight." Rahman said "....I am gratified. It is the right thing to do and I appreciate Mr. Garcia's efforts."

Bell moving to heavyweight

One of the biggest punchers in boxing today, as well as one of its most exciting practitioners, former undisputed cruiserweight world champion O’Neil Bell is ready to introduce some of that excitement into a new division – heavyweight. “The heavyweight division needs a savior, and I’m applying for the job,” said Bell, 26-3-1 with 24 knockouts. “I hate to say it, but the division is a mess and it needs cleaning up by a dynamic and exciting fighter like myself.”

“This is great news for O’Neil Bell and for all of boxing,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing, Bell’s promoter. “Not only will O’Neil get to shine at a weight where he is comfortable at, but the world will finally get to see him at his best – putting on exciting fights and knocking people out in the sport’s glamour division.”

World cruiserweight champion for almost two years, the 33-year old Jamaica native has thrilled fight fans ever since his pro debut in 1998, and over the course of his decade in the game, he has knocked out the likes of Jean-Marc Mormeck, Ezra Sellers, Kelvin Davis, Sebastiaan Rothmann, and Arthur Williams. But now he believes it’s time for him to pursue bigger game. “Making the cruiserweight limit has sapped me of my strength over my last couple of fights and took away what got me to the world championship in the first place,” said Bell. “Now at heavyweight, I feel better than ever and I can’t wait to smash everyone in my path on the way to the championship. This is the most excited I’ve ever been in my career, and that’s bad news for whoever gets in my way.”

DEMARCUS CORLEY LOOKING TO AVOID FIFTH STRAIGHT LOSS

Coming off of four straight losses, former WBO light welterweight titlist DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley is in a back-to-the-wall fight Wednesday night against Ashley “Treasure” Theophane (21-3, 7 KOs) in Rochester, New York. Hatton to fight Malignaggi without longtime trainer Graham

LONDON -- British boxer Ricky Hatton will be without his trainer for November's IBF light welterweight title fight against Paulie Malignaggi after he announced his retirement.

Billy Graham, Hatton's trainer of 11 years, has said he will retire following a fight on Friday. His last fight with Hatton was the lopsided points victory over Juan Lazcano in an IBO light welterweight title fight in May.

"Ricky and Billy had a meeting yesterday in which Billy admitted he was not going any further," Hatton's father, Ray, said. "It was quite emotional because they have been together for so long.

"It's a sad day. Billy will always be remembered as one of the world's great trainers, and to go out after a win in front of 58,000 people in Manchester will be a fitting end to his career."

Graham's assistant, Lee Beard, is likely to train Hatton for his fight against Malignaggi before the boxer decides on a permanent replacement.

Pacquiao-De La Hoya Update

Hall-of-Fame promoter Bob Arum said there is no reason to hurry things up in sealing a deal for Manny Pacquiao's next fight. Interviewed by "Sports Chat" Tuesday morning Arum said Pacquiao and his family will stay in Las Vegas for a few days and in between, talks will commence to determine the Filipino four-division champion's opponent. "Hopefully that will result in a plan if he wants to go with the De La Hoya fight. I'll contact Richard Schaefer and will start that negotiations," said Arum "It's gonna take maybe a week or so, but there's no reason for undue haste. It's a very important decision for Manny's career. A lot of money involved and we're gonna go slowly."

In a recent get together with writers and editors of Philippine sports last week Pacquiao revealed his readiness in becoming the farewell opponent of Oscar De La Hoya, acknowledged as the top superstar of the sport. "It's an honor to fight a legend like De La Hoya. If this fight pushes through, I will give my very best in preparing for this fight," said Pacquiao. "I believe Freddie when he said I can beat De La Hoya. Freddie once trained De La Hoya so he knows the strengths and weaknesses of De La Hoya."

Arum said Pacquiao was set to arrive yesterday in Los Angeles and will have the Filipino star board a private jet from the Santa Monica airport to fly to Las Vegas. Though Pacquiao seemed eager to face De La Hoya in an intriguing but highly-anticipated bout, Arum said everything depends on what decision will the Mexican-American poster boy takes. Arum also talked about his plans for super bantamweight prospect Bernabe Concepcion ands world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr.

B'WAY BOXING WON'T BE SINGING THE BLUES AT B.B. KING'S

DiBella brings long-running series to Times Square

Lou DiBella, who has already proven his chops as a promoter and as a former vice president at HBO Sports, will add another highlight to his credentials when he promotes the first professional fight card at the B.B. King Blues Club - in the heart of New York City's Times Square - next Wednesday. When DiBella ventured out into the world of boxing promotion eight years ago, he signed a lot of young talent from the 2000 Olympics. It took a while to see some financial progress on his investments. He brought a lot of his fighters up through the ranks on his regular fight series known as "Broadway Boxing." For the longest time, Broadway Boxing took in less money than DiBella put out. However, DiBella is now proud to say "Broadway Boxing is breaking even now."
He added, "It’s no longer draining money but it does not make money. It’s an investment in the future and it’s an investment in New York boxing."

Luckily for DiBella, guys he has led to world titles and big fights - such as Jermain Taylor, Paulie Malignaggi and Andre Berto- help keep DiBella Entertainment a profitable company. DiBella knows it takes money to make money in the long run, and that’s why he’s investing in next week’s card at the B.B. King Blues Club. The place only seats 550 so DiBella figures he’ll "lose a few bucks."
"It’s manageable and it accomplishes the goal of getting exposure for the young kids," said DiBella, a regular at B.B. King’s who has seen B.B. himself perform there, as well as Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and even rapper Talib Kweli.

"It’s a great place to see shows and I actually got to see a Golden Gloves show that was done for a small audience [earlier this year]," said DiBella. "And it was an unbelievable atmosphere. When I saw that, I said to myself, ‘I want to do a pro show here,’ and in this case, the timing was right and they had the building open on the date I wanted."

While DiBella will end up slightly in the red on next week’s show, there’s a method to his madness. Broadway Boxing has become a developing ground for numerous DiBella-promoted fighters.

"It’s going to be sold out. It’s going to look great. It’s going to create new great television shows," said DiBella, who noted that SportsNet New York will air a delayed broadcast of the August 6th fight card. Headlining the show is former junior welterweight titlist Randall Bailey versus Dairo Esalas. Another match-up later in the night will feature junior middleweight James Moore, a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, NY, taking on veteran Lloyd Christian Joseph, a native of the Virgin Islands who fights out of New York.

"James is coming back against a real tough guy," said DiBella. "James Moore had his first pro loss in his last fight [last month ] and now he’s fighting Lloyd Christian Joseph, who is a really good local fighter and that’s a tough fight for Moore coming back."

Dat "Be Dat" Nguyen, an exciting super bantamweight who was recently signed by DiBella Entertainment, will also be featured. Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American, is currently 12-1 (6). He is undefeated on the East Coast. Nguyen’s only defeat - a six-round split decision - occurred when he ventured to Arizona to take on local fighter Gregorio Torres.

The August 6 show will also feature New York City heavyweight Vinny Maddalone and three amateur stand-outs making their pro debuts - light heavyweight Will Rozinsky, a four time New York Golden Gloves champion; hard-punching middleweight Philip Jackson-Benson of Brooklyn, a two-time Golden Gloves winner; and lightweight Ryan Kielczewski, of Lowell, MA, a finalist in the 2008 US National Golden Gloves.

DiBella is known for putting on competitive matches and because of this, a few of his fighters in the past have suffered upset losses in front of their hometown fans. However, DiBella would rather see his guys matched against live opponents - and possibly lose - than to reach a world title fight with an undefeated record and not be ready for the opportunity.

"You know, it’s more important to teach a guy how to fight than it is to keep a guy undefeated," said DiBella. "There are a lot of 25-0 guys that can’t fight at all. I mean, you really need to know whether a kid can fight or not. You’ve got to make sure you’ve given a guy exposure to all sorts of styles and exposure to quality opposition and if someone loses along the way, at least he learns how to be a fighter."

And that’s the great thing about many of DiBella’s shows. They are often the theater of the unexpected. Fighters such as Curtis Stevens, Edgar Santana and Gary Stark Jr. - all promoted by DiBella when they suffered knockout losses to so-called lesser men with less impressive records - can vouch for that.

The B.B. King Blues Club & Grill is located at 237 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. Tickets are selling fast. Call DBE at 212-947-2577 for more information.

PAC LAND FOR OSCAR?

So was the second biggest winner of this past weekend Manny Pacquiao, since it takes Cotto out of the running to face De La Hoya on December 6th?

"Well, no, I think the second biggest winner was De La Hoya because he doesn't have to face either of these guys," answered Arum, in reference to Margarito and Cotto. It seems now this is Pacquiao's fight to make or break.

"Tomorrow (Tuesday) at 1 o'clock, we have a private plane taking Manny and his family to Las Vegas. He'll meet with me later in the day and on Wednesday and at that point, once I know the direction he's going, what his financial demands are, I contact Richard Schaefer."

As for how confident he is that this deal can be made, Arum admits, "I really don't know. You let it play out the way it should play out. I don't know what Manny's demands are, I don't know what Schaefer is willing to give. I think everybody is going to be sensible and everybody here are pretty good business people. So I think the thing is going to get done. But I have no assurances that's the case."

Nate Campbell to fill in for Teddy Atlas

Jacksonville, FL: IBF / WBO / WBA Lightweight king Nate Campbell will return to the broadcasters chair for 2 weeks, as he was selected to fill in for Teddy Atlas on ESPN2's Wednesday Night Fights. With Atlas heading to China to cover the Olympics, Campbell will co-host the August 6th and August 13th editions of the Wednesday night series, alongside Joe Tessitore. Campbell's recent appearance as an in-studio analyst on ESPN2 impressed many, leading to his selection for these dates. "I can't thank ESPN enough for this opportunity, and for their confidence in me as a commentator" said Campbell. "One day when I'm done fighting, broadcasting is definitely something I would really enjoy pursuing." Although he is currently in training camp for his September 13 title defense on Showtime against the undefeated Joan Guzman, Campbell indicated that this would not affect his camp, or be any kind of distraction as he prepares for Guzman. "The August 13 card is in Lauderdale, so I was going to that show anyways because my training camp is in Lauderdale, and my boy Joe Greene is fighting on that card. So the only day that would possibly have been affected would have been the August 6th date. But my trainer John David Jackson also trains Randall Bailey, who is fighing on that same day, so John David would have been gone that day anyways. So no, it's not any kind of distraction".

Jauregui Seeks Third Consecutive Upset Victory

Guadalajara, Mexico’s own Javier Jauregui ranks among the most seasoned contenders in the sport of boxing. His willingness to meet any fighter in the ring is paralleled by few outside of such top 10 contenders as John Ruiz, Glen Johnson, and Rocky Juarez.

On August 2nd, the former IBF lightweight champion, 34, will step into the ring once again with a younger contender/prospect and attempt to turn the clock back on his career to prove that experience can overcome youth. Javier and such brave former titlists as Reggie Johnson, Verno Phillips, and Raul Marquez have already proven so in 2008. However, now Jauregui must face the highly promising 23 year old Anthony Peterson, 27-0 (19), at Palms Casino in Las Vegas,Nevada.

Jauregui’s 53-14-2 (36) record is a virtual who’s who of top contenders and champions from the featherweight to lightweight division. In February, Jauregui celebrated his 20th year as a professional and a month later he scored an upset victory over rising contender Miguel Angel Huerta. Like many other Mexican fighters, Jauregui turned professional in only his fifteenth year of life and threw hands with grown men for pay. Just like the others, Jauregui’s career had its ups and downs and along the way he defeated such fighters as Antonio Hernandez, Jose Luis Castillo (2), Adan Casillas, Jose Badillo, Ivan Valle, Miguel Casillas, and Leavander Johnson. He also met, and failed against, some of the best fighters in his division: Jesus Chavez, Agapito Sanchez, Acelino Freitas, Julio Diaz, and Joan Guzman.

When asked how he would approach his upcoming challenge in Peterson, Jauregui said, “Anthony is a boxer/runner [so,] I expect him to box and run. I will have to chase him down and cut off the ring like when I fought Adrian Mora and Leavander Johnson. Pressure. Pressure. Pressure.”

Pressure was the main ingredient in Raul Marquez’ victory over Giovanni Lorenzo earlier this summer and it also proved to be the downfall of Miguel Cotto against Antonio Margarito this past weekend. It just might be the trick against the far less experienced Peterson, who has never shared the ring with a veteran like Jauregui. If so, it will be yet another upset victory for the Mexican spoiler.

A win over Peterson should be enough to put Jauregui into another world title fight. It’ll at least separate him from old rivals Julio Diaz and Jesus Chavez, who are also in the hunt to reclaim a lightweight world championship.

His choices for a big fight down the road were simple.

“Nate Campbell or Manny Pacquiao,” Jauregui answered.

His thoughts about the Joel Casamayor-Juan Manuel Marquez bout were equally brief and are perhaps an indication of his focus on the man in front of him, Anthony Peterson.

“Juan Manuel Marquez. He wins easily.”

Defeating Anthony Peterson on August 2nd won’t be as simple or as easy, but the reward should be worth every ounce of effort.

Calzaghe Counter Sues Former Promoter

Light-heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe is set to counter sue former promoter Frank Warren for $4 million he claims is still owed to him following his April 19 fight with Bernard Hopkins.

"Frank has sued me in order to try and hold onto me for my upcoming fight with Roy Jones Jr. This claim is without merit and I will fight it vigorously."

Calzaghe then went on to say: "But that is only half the story. Sports Network has withheld over $4million due to me for my fight in April with Bernard Hopkins.

"I am counter-suing for this and am confident of success. I am saddened and disgusted by what Frank Warren and his company have done.

ShoBox back in NYC
Friday, August 1, Live at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME
From the Aviator Arena, Brooklyn

ShoBox: The New Generation returns to New York City for the first time in four years with New Jersey's own Pawel "Raging Bull" Wolak (21-0, 14 KOs) as he puts his undefeated record on the line against ShoBox veteran Ishe "Sugar Shay" Smith (19-3, 19 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight bout, Friday, Aug. 1, live on SHOWTIME at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

The co-feature pits undefeated, Bronx native Jorge "The Truth" Teron (21-0-1, 14 KOs) against the hard-hitting Mexican, Michael Lozada (29-4-1, 22 KOs) in a 10-round lightweight battle.

The fights will be promoted by Gotham Boxing from the Aviator Arena in Brooklyn, New York.

Born in Poland, "Raging Bull" Wolak has an aggressive, in-your-face style. He is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision victory against then once-beaten Troy Browning on May 17, 2008.

Prior to his fight against Browning, Wolak thrilled boxing fans at Madison Square Garden when he registered a stunning and electrifying second-round knockout of Dupre "Total Package" Strickland on March 15, 2008.

Smith on the other hand is looking to keep his championship hopes alive. This fight is a must win as he's lost two of his last three fights by unanimous decision – albeit to world-class opposition in Sechew Powell and Joel Julio – and a loss here could be detrimental to his career.

Fighting on ShoBox might be Smith's good luck charm since he has won his previous three fights on the acclaimed SHOWTIME series.

Smith's impressive victories on ShoBox provided nationwide notoriety. He notched a decisive unanimous decision win against Randall Bailey, handed David Estrada his first defeat, and outpointed veteran Sam Garr.

Smith gained additional mainstream success when he was tapped to be on the reality TV show The Contender in 2004. He would ultimately be matched against Sergio Mora, the tournament's eventual winner, where he lost by split decision. Mora went on to become a world champion when he upset Vernon Forrest on June 7, 2008 to win the WBC super welterweight belt via majority decision on SHOWTIME.

The Teron-Lozada fight has the potential to be another explosive match-up. Teron is coming off six impressive knockout victories in his last ten fights while the aggressive Lozada is on an extraordinary run having won seven straight fights by way of knockout.

Teron grew up and still lives in the Bronx, only a subway ride away from the Aviator Arena. He will rely on home court advantage in his continuing quest for a lightweight title.

Kirilov-Darchinyan collide
Saturday, August 2, Live at 9PM ET/PT on SHOWTIME
From the Emerald Queen Casino, Tacoma, Wash.

IBF junior bantamweight champion Dimitri "The Baby" Kirilov (29-3-1, 9 KOs) will defend his title against former IBF flyweight champion and knockout artist Vic "Raging Bull" Darchinyan (29-1-1, 23 KOs), Saturday, Aug. 2, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

In the co-feature, U.S. Olympian and undefeated prospect Andre "The Matrix" Dirrell (15-0, 10 KOs) puts his flawless record on the line against fellow unbeaten Mike "The Persecutor" Paschall (17-0-1, 4 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight brawl.

The telecast will originate from the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash., and is promoted by Gotham Boxing, Inc.

Kirilov, who is trained by Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, captured the IBF crown by winning a close unanimous decision against former U.S. Olympian Jose Navarro on Oct. 13, 2007. The scores were 116-112, 114-113 twice.

In his most recent outing in February, the Russian-born Kirilov wasn't able to finish Cecilio Santos (22-8-3, 12 KOs) and had to settle for a draw. Although one judge scored the fight for Kirilov, 116-112; the other two scored it even at 114 each.

Darchinyan had an iron grip on the flyweight division, successfully defending his IBF title six times - five inside the distance. He eventually lost his 112-pound strap in a major upset to Filipino star Nonito Donaire. Darchinyan now aims to wreak havoc the 115-pound, super flyweight division.

Kirilov-Darchinyan is a match up of varying styles. Kirilov, known for his tremendous speed and ability to outbox his competition, relies heavily on his quick hands. He loves to pepper his opponents with a precise left jab.

Darchinyan, a southpaw, is quite the opposite from his counterpart. Not nearly as polished and refined as Kirilov, Darchinyan employs an in-your-face game plan that has produced 23 knockout victories for the Armenian-born boxer. Darchinyan is often described as possessing bone-crushing power.

Dirrell, who has fought on the prospect-based series ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME, will attempt to prove he is no longer a prospect but a championship contender when he faces the undefeated Paschall in the co-feature.

In his last fight in May, Dirrell looked extraordinary against Anthony Hanshaw (21-2-1, 14 KOs), registering a fifth round TKO on ShoBox.

Despite a slow start, Dirrell came on strongly and with a left hand to the head sent Hanshaw to the canvas at the end of the fourth round near his opponent's corner. Following a flurry of unanswered punches to Hanshaw's head early in the fifth, referee Pat Russell stopped the contest at 1:13.

Dirrell, who won the bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games for the United States, is a tall, agile southpaw with solid power in both mitts.

In his 18 fight career, Paschall has scored several impressive unanimous decision victories against veteran boxers. The prospect is taking a tough test on August 2 against Dirrell. With only four knockouts to his credit, Paschall will have to rely on his boxing skills if he hopes to stay undefeated.

Sam was named champion nearly two weeks after a July 4 bout against Paolo Vidoz which was initially declared a draw. The result was later changed to a majority decision in Sam's favor after judge Robin Dolpierre said he made a mistake in scoring the last round. The EBU has now called for a September 8 purse bid for a bout between Vidoz and Matt Skelton for the vacant belt.

Lennox Lewis warns David Haye over Wladimir Klitschko

Recently quoted in the Sun UK, the former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World, Lennox Lewis has given his thoughts on cruiserweight turned heavyweight, David Haye.

In regards to Haye, Lewis quoted by the publication stated: "People keep asking me about him and I tell them he has real talent. He's very good, he's upcoming, he can punch and he's very capable."

Lewis went on to add that he doesn't think Haye is ready for Klitschko, saying: "I know he's calling out Klitschko right now but I don't think he's ready yet. Perhaps 18 months down the line, maybe then he will have what it takes."

Golden time for the Golden Boy

Although much of the recent media attention has been on whom Oscar De La Hoya will face on December 6th, little has been noted about his personal career and accomplishments.

De La Hoya has accumulated wealth and titles throughout his Hall of Fame career. Regardless of these accomplishments inside the ring, he still did not feel that his life outside the ring was complete.

Yes, there were women around and what seemed like an unlimited amount of cash to his disposal. Even people who would always say ‘yes’ to him because he was Oscar De La Hoya.

Where many people may be content to have these superficial things, it was different for De La Hoya. He no longer needs that lifestyle and is content to play games with his children rather than roulette or poker games inside Las Vegas casinos.

He has been asked repeatedly as to why he still fights. He could easily walk away from the sport and still be successful in running his successful Golden Boy Promotions. He is an ambassador to the sport and is a popular figure in today’s pop culture.

Although De La Hoya is focusing on his final bout, he is content as to what the future holds once he permanently hangs up his gloves.

“To be honest with you, I have been preparing for this moment,” says De La Hoya, who began his professional career knocking out Lamar Williams in November of 1992, only a few months after winning a gold medal for the United States.

“I see my retirement as a another chapter. I can’t picture myself fighting so long. It just seemed like yesterday that I began my professional career. Time goes by so fast.”

Indeed it does. It almost seems like yesterday when De La Hoya stopped Jimmy Bredahl in the 10th round to win his first world title in 1994. Blink again and De La Hoya was victorious in stopping one of his idols in boxing, Julio Cesar Chavez on a hot summer day in Las Vegas two years later.

In reflecting back on his life, despite the triumphs and championship belts De La Hoya would win came the period of frustration and mistakes he would make.

Although De La Hoya had been in the game for a long time, he was still in his 20’s. It is often the case that youth and large amounts of money do not mix. For De La Hoya, it was the tip of the iceberg.

De La Hoya quickly had people around, some he had never met, but were quick to ride the wave of having rooms or food paid for by the Golden Boy.

“I was hanging out with the wrong people,” says the Golden Boy. “People who were drunks. It went overboard and it was a snowball effect. Young women were there. You fall into this trap and it eats you alive. You have to be smart enough and wake up . . . and get away from the pitfalls that hurt your life.”

Recently, De La Hoya opened himself up with a tell-all book titled “American Son: My Story.” Written with the assistance of Los Angeles Times writer Steve Springer, De La Hoya touched on a lot of these topics that he was never proud of, but also celebrated the accomplishments inside and outside of the ring.

De La Hoya, who is a private individual with a close knit of friends, felt the need to open up about his life.

“In the book, I had to open up and tell the truth,” he says. “It was a big relief for me. I wanted to be an example to people and show that I faced many obstacles and tough moments in my life. I wanted people to say ‘He’s human’ or ‘He is one of us.’ I am not a perfect person.

“Those first few years, it was hard for me to handle success because it came so fast.”

Life did come fast as he had numerous challenges in his life that included a child out of wedlock and a failed relationship with actress Shanna Moakler.

Recently, De La Hoya was sued by a stripper for slander in New York City for being forced to sign an agreement claiming she could not prove that racy pictures she took of him were authentic. The suit was dropped after experts from De La Hoya’s legal team proved that the pictures were doctored.

Despite what has happened, De La Hoya continues to be a pillar in his community. Although De La Hoya lives and spends a majority of his time in Puerto Rico, he has not forgotten his roots.

De La Hoya sponsors numerous toy drives and holds annual holiday turkey giveaways. His Oscar De La Hoya Foundation is a nonprofit organization contributes to worthy causes to numerous families and programs in the Los Angeles area.

Recently, De La Hoya donated $3.5 million to Green Dot public schools, of which the Oscar De La Hoya Animo Charter High School received a portion as well. White Memorial Hospital in East Los Angeles also has received funding for the Cecilia Gonzales De La Hoya Cancer Center and the Oscar De La Hoya Children’s Medical Center.

De La Hoya, who counts on childhood friend Eric Gomez as his matchmaker, is at peace and lives for today and what the future holds.

“My world is finally at peace. All of these years where I have met so many people. After finding my true love (his wife, Millie), my world is a perfect one. I am extremely happy after going through all of these experiences, both good and bad.

“These experiences have made me the person I am now. Life is not easy. It is difficult, cruel, and disappointing at times. If you can handle anything that comes at you, life can be beautiful.”

Life is beautiful so far for De La Hoya. He may have his supporters and his critics. Those who like him or dislike him. However, he made the most of his talents and applied them for good. If anything, he has set an example for young people of all ethnicities to accept challenges and do good in their lives.

Those around him to describe him as grounded and humble. He still carries with him a one dollar food stamp in his wallet that represents the difficulties and challenges as a youth.

With all the positive that is around him, he now feels that his life is complete.

“All those experiences has shown me a lot,” says De La Hoya. “Success is not easy. With success comes great responsibility. A lot of people experience bad moments. Sometimes, it is too late. I thank God that I was able to learn and move forward with my life.”

Marquez up to the lightweight challenge

Juan Manuel Marquez is going from facing one of the most electric and hard-hitting fighters, in his last fight, to one of the most talented, in his next bout.

No need to feel sorry for him or think that he can not win. Instead, he wants the challenge and looks forward to it.

On Sept. 13, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Marquez, 48-4-1, 35 KOs, will take on Joel Casamayor, 36-3-1, 22 KOs, with the hopes of wrestling away the interim WBO Lightweight title away from the Cuban-born fighter.

The bout will headline the "Challenge" card, presented by Golden Boy Promotions, in association with Romanza Boxing. HBO Pay Per View will televise the card.

Marquez is coming off one of the best fights of 2008, when he lost a close 12-round split decision against current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao in March. The bout was a 2005 rematch that saw Marquez recovering from three knockdowns to rally and fight his way to a 12-round split decision draw in May of 2004.

Rather than sulk in the decision in a bout he feels he won, Marquez now moves forward and will fight one of the consistently better fighters within the last decade. Both boxers fight under the Golden Boy Promotions banner.

Like the gentleman that Marquez is, one who rarely runs his mouth, he was quick to praise the talent and ability of Casamayor.

"He is a very good fighter," said Marquez, who is a native of Mexico City and now resides in the Orange County city of Anaheim. "I know that he will give it his best for this fight."

fightnews.comCasamayor is coming off a thrilling battle against previously-unbeaten Michael Katsidis at one of the newer venues to host professional boxing, the Morongo Spa Resort and Casino in the Southern California desert.

Casamayor rallied in the 10th round after being dropped and stopped the hard-hitting Katsidis with one punch to the chin.

Marquez is never one to shy from fighting the best at featherweight and super featherweight. However, like Pacquiao, he will go up five pounds in weight and will hope to win a world title in a third different weight class.

Regardless, Marquez always felt that he and the 1992 Olympic Gold medalist would meet sooner or later.

"We always thought about this as a future fight," said Marquez, who made his professional career over 15 years ago. "I never expected the bout to be made this soon. I always like to fight the great fighters out there. This is a great opportunity to fight him."

Casamayor has been in tremendous battles throughout his career against some of the best super featherweights and lightweights in the world. One knack that Casamayor has on him is that he sometimes uses rough tactics in a bout. Marquez hopes that will not be a problem for his match up against Casamayor.

"I know he can be a bit dirty as a fighter," replied Marquez to the topic of Casamayor's style. "Hopefully, the referee will do a good job of not allowing those things to happen. If he does not, than I could fight dirty as well."

"I do not like to fight that way," continued Marquez. "You have to do it intelligently. I have had to do it in the past when a referee does not have control of a fight. I have to defend myself."

Although Marquez will be stepping inside the ring against Casamayor, he could not help but think what a victory would do for his future. Should he come out victorious against Casamayor, not only would he have a world title, but added leverage to make a third bout against Pacquiao.

Marquez feels not only does he have a score to settle, but that Pacquiao needs him.

"(David) Diaz did not have the skills to be fighting Pacquiao. I know that Pacquiao made more money with me than he did with Diaz. He knows that I beat him. That is why he does not want to fight me."

Asked which Pacquiao decision left Marquez with a bad aftertaste, Marquez responded:

"Both of them. I hit him often and easier in the second fight. I know that there was the knockdown, but I felt that I was the better fighter. I don't even think he expected that he was going to be announced as the winner."

With respect to Casamayor, Marquez knows that he will have his hands full. He knows Casamayor could bring different styles and can adjust to Marquez' game plan during the bout. However, he feels he is confident that he can outbox and defeat Casamayor.

"I'm preparing well in the gym every day. I trust my training. I know that Casamayor is a difficult fighter. However, he is not invincible. I can win and I have the skills to do it."

I gotta c/s this statement, Marquez was robbed in my opinion. I don't think Pac really wants a 3rd fight with this dude.

Maccarinelli-Banks in UK

Enzo Maccarinelli will enjoy home advantage in his fight for the vacant WBO world cruiserweight title challenge against Johnathon Banks after promoter Frank Warren won a purse bid for the fight. Warren put in a successful bid at the WBO's offices in Puerto Rico on Tuesday. Maccarinelli is aiming to recapture the WBO crown he lost against David Haye in March this year, and the Welshman was delighted when he heard the news about the purse bid. "Frank Warren has delivered for me again, and I can't wait to get back into action and win my title back. The loss to Haye was hard to swallow because I know I could have done better but that is in the past and I'm focused on getting back to winning ways again," said 27-year-old Maccarinelli. Banks is supposed to be the next big thing in America, but I'll cut him down to size." A date and venue for the fight will be confirmed at a later date.

Mundine, Dib triumph

Former WBA super middleweight champion and currently WBA#3 middleweight Anthony Mundine (32-3, 23 KOs) outpointed Crazy Kim (28-4, 24 KOs) over ten rounds at Newcastle Entertainment Centre, Newcastle, NSW, Australia on Wednesday. Scores at the conclusion were 98-92, 98-91 and 98-91 all for Mundine. The outspoken former WBA world champion has stated he is after the best middleweights in the world which includes Kelly Pavlik but weighing in at 164 pounds tonight Mundine does not have the same strength and durability he has shown in the 168 pound division.

Australian featherweight Billy Dib (21-0, 11 KOs) seemed lucky to win the vacant IBO 130 pound title with a close twelve round points decision over South African Zolani Marali (19-2, 13 KOs). Dib had to use all his skills to defeat the import who made the Aussie work for every point. Scores 116-114, 116-114 and 114-113.

Haye bulking up

Don't expect to see former WBC/WBA and WBO unified cruiserweight king David Haye below 200lbs again anytime soon. "I've only just started to get back into serious training and I'm currently at a lean and mean 16 stone 8 pounds (232 lbs)" explained Haye (21-1, 20 KOs). "Klitschko was worried that I wouldn't be big enough to face him, but the scales don't lie and I'm well over the 16 stone mark and in great shape already. I'm eating well, living well and doing some serious training. My body fat is at 12 per cent and I'm currently in better shape than the majority of the division even at this early stage." Haye - back in the UK attending media engagements – is based in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, where last week he officially opened a state-of-the-art boxing gym. Currently the WBC #5 ranked heavyweight, Haye will fight next in mid November at London's 02 Arena against an opponent to be named.

Clottey: I Will Destroy Zab!

IBF #1 rated welterweight Joshua Clottey of Accra, Ghana, today said he will "...destroy Judah, way worse than how Cotto did it last year." Judah, a former undisputed world weltweight champion who has been in 15 world title bouts, shrugged it off. "I'm on a much higher skill level than he is," said Judah. Judah vs. Clottey is this Saturday, August 2, at the Palms Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas. The new welterweight king, 'Tijuana Tornado' Antonio Margarito, will be at ringside.

Clottey said he plans to pressure Judah, back him up, and attack at all times."Just the way Margarito fights," said Clottey, "and after beating Judah, I want to go into the ring again against Margarito." Clottey battled Margarito for 12 rounds in December, 2006 in Atlantic City, N.J. "I pounded on him, then hurt my right hand, then my left," Clottey said. "I was hurt but I refused to quit. I went the full 12 rounds." First, however, Clottey must deal with Judah. Bob Arum of Top Rank says Clottey vs. Judah is a scorcher. "The welterweight division is the hottest in boxing today," Arum said.

Judah vs. Clottey for the vacant IBF Welterweight Championship will be broadcast on HBO After Dark. The Friday weigh-in (open to the public) will be at 4 pm on the Ballroom Level at the Palms Hotel-Casino. First Bell on Saturday will be at 4:30 pm. Judah vs. Clottey will go into the ring 7:30 pm.
