Although former heavyweight titlist Oleg Maskaev has been mentioned as a possible opponent for David Haye when the cruiserweight champion moves up to heavyweight on Nov. 15, it's unlikely to be him now that Maskaev has a fight signed for Sept. 6. Manager Fred Kesch said a Haye representative contacted Maskaev promoter Dennis Rappaport a couple of months ago, but it never went any further. "Someone from Haye's camp did call Dennis, but we never heard back from them," Kesch said. "It was one phone call, one time to Dennis and I've never heard from them at all." Also, because of its packed schedule and tight budget, HBO won't carry Haye's heavyweight fight, as had been discussed.

Former cruiserweight titleholder Enzo Maccarinelli of Wales will face Emanuel Steward pupil Johnathon Banks of Detroit for one of the titles Haye, who knocked out Maccarinelli to unify belts in March, vacated to move up. Maccarinelli promoter Frank Warren won a purse bid for $450,000 for the promotional rights, beating K2 Promotions, which bid the minimum allowed under WBO rules, $300,000. Warren said the fight will likely take place Sept. 27 in the United Kingdom. "Banks is supposed to be the next big thing in America, but I'll cut him down to size," Maccarinelli said. According to WBO rules, since the bout will be in Maccarinelli's country, Banks is entitled to 60 percent of the bid ($243,000) with Maccarinelli getting 40 percent ($162,000). If it winds up on neutral turf, they'll split it 50-50. If one fighter withdraws, the other boxer is obligated to face Alexander Alekseev within 180 days.

With Bob Arum and Al Haymon, manager of Paul Williams unable to get along don't expect talks between the camps of Margarito to face Williams anytime soon.

Also, don't be surprised if Arum puts the Tijuana Tornado in the ring for a unification bout with the winner of tonights Judah-Clottey fight.

Goossen Offers 4-Million For Margarito-Williams Rematch

Dan Goossen, promoter for WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams, has sent a hefty offer to Bob Arum of Top Rank for a 2009 unification rematch with WBA champion Antonio Margarito. Williams won a close decision over Margarito last year.

Arum has mentioned several opponents for Margarito's next fight, but Williams is not one them. The reason given by Arum is the bad blood with Williams' advisor, Al Haymon. Goossen told boxing scribe Tim Smith that he sent Arum an offer for the rematch last week and has yet to hear back from anyone in Top Rank. Margarito's purse for the first Williams bout is still the highest of his career, $1.6 million to $1.5 for what he made against Miguel Cotto

"I sent Bob and offer sheet for a $4 million guarantee for the rematch in the first quarter of 2009 against 50% of the revenue," Goossen said. "If he rejected any part of the agreement he could flip it and I'll accept the same terms."

Arum told several outlets that he wanted to match Margarito against the winner of Joshua Clottey-Zab Judah, which Clottey won to capture the IBF welterweight title. Goossen told Smith that a fight against either is not good for the sport.

"It certainly does make things easier for him, but it does nothing good for the sport," said Dan Goossen, Williams' promoter. "It's his prerogative. But we shouldn't let our personal greed dictate the sport. Paul Williams can certainly fight someone else on HBO, but it won't be as lucrative and it won't be as big a match for the fans."

If Williams is unable to land Margarito, Goossen says that he will probably get his mandatory defense out the way by facing Michael Jennings.

Darchinyan wants Donaire

Vic Darchinyan promised a highlight reel knockout and delivered one -- landing one bone-crunching left hand after another. The Armenian-born Australian stopped Russia’s Dimitri Kirilov in the fifth round to earn the IBF junior bantamweight championship, his second career world title in Tacoma, Washington. "I have learned a lot from my last few fights," said Darchinyan. "I was very focused and ready for this fight. I never underestimate my opponents." Kirilov, who had never been stopped in 33 professional fights, could not handle the destructive power that Darchinyan brought to the 115-pound fight. "I would like to have a rematch with Nonito Donaire,” said Darchinyan, who improved to 30-1-1 with 24 knockouts. "But who ever they put in front of me, Christian Mijares, Fernando Montiel, it doesn’t matter. I love to fight."

Oscar De La Hoya has a serious message for Manny Pacquiao

Oscar De La Hoya has a message for Manny Pacquiao. The message from De La Hoya to Pacquiao is if they fight, it will be very personal. Over the last few weeks talks and rumors have intensified of a possible showdown between De La Hoya and Pacquiao for December 6th.

In a recent interview with Insidesports.ph, De La Hoya discussed a deal he made with Pacquiao a few years back when the Filipino Icon signed a contract with De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. After signing with De La Hoya's promotional outfit, Pacquiao did a complete turn around and ended up resigning with Bob Arum's promotional company, Top Rank.

In regards to why this match-up would be personal, De La Hoya tells Insidesports.ph: “I think it’s very personal because I felt I accepted Manny and I trusted Manny and when we looked into each others’ eyes and we shook hands, I felt we had reached a deal." De La Hoya is adamant if they face one another, it will be personal because of the past. De La Hoya stated to the publication: "But the past is the past, and if we get in the ring it has to be very personal.”

Klitschko willing to fight Nicolay Valuev, Roy Jones Jr, David Haye and Chris Arreola

In a recent article by Tim Smith of the New York Daily News, Wladimir Klitschko is quoted discussing many things including fighters he'd like to fight. One of the fighters Klitschko mentioned was the 300 pound plus, 7 ft giant, Nicolay Valuev.

In regards to a match-up with the Giant, Klitschko stated: "This fight is interesting because I've never fought a guy who is about 7-feet tall. It's going to be a totally new experience and challenging."

Klitschko also mentioned Roy Jones Jr, David Haye and Chris Arreola as possible opponents. In the case of Haye, Klitschko wants to see Haye prove himself in the heavyweight division first before committing to a fight with him. With Jones Jr., Klitschko feels he's be too much for Jones Jr., but could be enticed if the money was right. Arreola is a fight Klitschko sees possibly happening down the road.

Manny Pacquiao wants two other fighters if he can't get Oscar De La Hoya

Promoter Bob Arum as usual is extremely busy these days. If Arum's plans go the way he likes, then he will have his fighter Manny Pacquiao take on Oscar De La Hoya this coming December 6th. However Arum is not willing to place all his time on just De La Hoya. A Fight with De La Hoya is what Arum considers "Plan A", and if "Plan A" fails to materialize, then Arum and Pacquiao have discussed a "Plan B and C".

Recently quoted on the Manila Bulletin, Arum confirmed that his and Pacquiao's "Plan A" is a fight with De La Hoya. However if that fails then either Humberto Soto or Edwin Valero for "Plans B and C."

Arum stated to the publication: "I spent quite some time with Manny today. Soto and Valero are Plans B and C. If the De La Hoya fight doesn't happen, we will talk about Soto or Valero."

Shumenov shuts out Griffin

After only six fights and nine months as a pro, extremely fast-rising light heavyweight Beibut Shumenov (6-0, 5 KOs) already has a big name on his resume. Local sources report that Kazakh former Olympian, who may be one of the hottest prospects in the sport, made former WBC champion Montell Griffin (49-8, 30 KOs) look like a novice, shutting him out over twelve one-sided rounds on Saturday night in Chimkent, Kazakhstan. Griffin was deducted a point in round nine which also slightly contributed to his painful loss. Judges Rufat Riskiev and Doniyor Ergshev, both from Uzbekistan, had it 120-108 for Shumenov, while Russian Evgueny Gorstkov set the scores a bit wider 120-107. The referee was Alexander Kalinkin, also from Russia. Following this huge victory Shumenov, who has retained his WBC Asian Boxing Council and WBO Asia Pacific 175lb belts during the process, is expected to enter top ranks of several sanctioning bodies. He was already ranked #15 by the WBO before after only five pro bouts. The event was promoted by Beibut’s brother Chingis Shumenov.

JOSHUA CLOTTEY WANTS MARGARITO REMATCH ASAP

Congrats on your victory, can you give us some thoughts on your performance?

"I think I was trying to wear him down. We were thinking that he's going to get tired in five rounds. But I did what I had to do to win the fight."

Was there anything about Zab Judah that surprised you?

JC: "He fought well and fought like the old Zab Judah. When I was expecting him to get tired he was still going and trying his best and that surprised."

Did you think you were going to knock him out had the fight continued?

JC: "I know he wasn't going to make twelve rounds. My trainer told me to step up, from round nine to twelve I was going to go all out and I was going to knock him out. I was fighting at a regular pace."

When the fight was first waved off you reacted as though you won by knockout. What was going through you head when you figured out they were going to the cards?

JC:
"I was thinking, what's going on? I didn't hit him with my head. He was using my head more than I was. When they did that, I was like wow, how can this happen. I know he was throwing his jab and I knew it was a good fight, so I was a little worried. I didn't want to leave it to the judges."

What does becoming champion mean to you?

JC: "It means a lot because I've been struggling my whole life to become champion. Now people will know I am champion and I'm going to look to make fights with everybody who don't want to fight me.

Who do you want to fight the most?

JC: "Margarito. We have to fight again to prove that my hand caused me to lose that fight. I really want to fight with Margarito."

If not Margarito, who else?

JC: "Andre Berto, he's a DiBella boxer and I would love to unify the belts and put that green belt around my waist. I want that green belt."

When might your next fight take place?

JC: "I want to fight before the end of the year, but I'll have to talk to my people and see."

Closing thoughts for the fans?

JC: "I really want to thank Bob Arum for what he has done for me, and all of my fans around the world."

Haussler: This is the chance
I've been waiting for

In October, a long wait will come to an end for Danilo Haussler (29-3, 7 KOs) . The 33-year-old German will finally make his first world title fight, challenging Danish super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler. To be in top shape for the biggest bout of his career, Haussler has been training extremely hard in Manfred Wolke´s famous gym in Frankfurt/Oder. “I came close to world title fights a couple of times,” Haussler said. “Four or five years ago, I did not get my shot because Sven Ottke and Markus Beyer were first in line. After that I got close several times but it did not happen due to various reasons. That is why I am very happy to finally get this chance.”

Part one of his preparation is already over. “Training is no different from the preparation for the other fights,” he said. “But the motivation is much, much bigger. Everybody knows that I have worked all my life to get a world title fight. After winning the WBA and IBF intercontinental titles and also becoming European champion, this is the challenge I have been waiting for.”

With Manfred Wolke on vacation at the Baltic Sea, Haussler had worked out on his own in the last couple of weeks. On Monday, his mentor returned. “I am happy that he is back,” Haussler added. “I guess the intensity will be higher in the next weeks but it has to be like that in the build-up to such a big fight.”

Haussler will not enter the clash with Kessler, who has won 40 of 41 fights, as the favourite. “Prior to my first European title fight against Andrej Shkalikov I was just given an outsider´s chance to win, too,” he stated. “Yet I left the ring victorious. Being the underdog suits me well. Kessler can be beaten. Everyone could see that last year. I will be in top shape and will make the most of this opportunity.”

TEN QUESTIONS WITH 2008 OLYMPIAN SADAM ALI

The United States Olympic Boxing Team endured a long day on Tuesday as they continue the countdown toward the start of the Olympic Games. The nine boxers went through a rigorous strength and conditioning workout at the Beijing Normal University track in the morning before welcoming numerous members of the media during their afternoon training session. The squad closed the day with a sparring session before returning to the Olympic village for the night. Lightweight Sadam Ali (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took time out from his hectic day to share his thoughts on the Olympics and the final preparations for his opening bout.

1. How are you feeling now just a few days out from the Opening Ceremonies?

It’s right there, its super close so its time to bite down, start focusing down and get ready for what’s coming.

2. How has being on the ground here in China affected your training?

It didn’t really affect my training, we came out here, worked really hard, did three workouts a day and we’re ready to go.

3. What is the most challenging part of being here in Beijing?

Being so far from home and away from my family

4. What is your favorite thing about China so far?

How nice the people here are, they really make you feel welcome. They really respect us and I like that and I like shopping.

5. What was the one thing you wanted to make sure you brought to China?

My heart, I have everything in my heart. I have my dad, my family, everybody back home, everyone that’s supporting me. They are all in my heart.

6. What is a typical day like here for you in Beijing?

Wake up in the morning, get dressed, brush my teeth and get ready to do the morning workout. After the morning workout, we have a couple of hours and we have the gym workout. Three days out of the week, we have sparring a couple of hours after that. Four days of the week, I do an extra run at night so some days, I have four workouts a day.

7. Are any family and friends coming to China to support you?

I’m not totally sure but I know my dad, two of my uncles, and both of my coaches are coming

8. What does being an Olympian mean to you?

It means a lot, not a lot of people get to be in the position that I’m in right now. I know a lot of people back home would love to be in this position right now so I have to take advantage of it, put all the hard work together and make it happen. It makes me feel good when I think about it. Even after the Olympics, when I think about being an Olympian, it will mean a lot to me. It will always be in my mind, it will never go away.

9. What is your favorite thing to eat here?

Pasta

10. What can people expect to see from you when you finally take the ring at the Workers Indoor Arena?

Heart, speed, focus. They will see the World Kid Ali, I’m going to try to be the best I can be in there.

GODFREY: "CALLOWAY DUCKED ME"

Cruiserweight Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (16-1, 9 KOs) had his nose bent out of shape, so to speak, by recent comments attributed to Rob “All American Prize Fighter” Calloway. Calloway (70-7-2, 56 KOs) was quoted as saying, “I’ve never turned down any fight!” He went on to proclaim that he deserved a title fight and proceeded to call out Rudolf Kraj, Firat Arslan and Enzo Maccaranelli. Godfrey took offense because, he says, Calloway passed on an opportunity to fight Godfrey on August 29, 2008 in an ESPN2 main event. “I know Rob and he’s a great guy,” Godfrey said, “but my speed and movement would be too much for him to handle. If he wants to fight the elite guys in the cruiserweight division, he should have taken the fight against me to prove himself. I am an elite cruiserweight but he didn’t take the fight.”

Despite Rob proclaiming he’d fight anyone in the world given three weeks notice, Team Calloway reportedly passed on Godfrey because Rob had a fight July 19 against Max Alexander (14-2-1), which ended in a 12-round draw. Godfrey’s only loss as a pro was a 12-round decision in a WBC title eliminator to Kraj in Germany this past March.

Matt, second heavyweight alternate on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, had a 194-23 amateur record, capturing six national championships -- four open tournaments including the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics – as well as a Bronze medal at the 2001 Pan-American Games, Silver in all four of that year’s national major tournaments (National Golden Gloves, PAL (Police Athletic League), U.S. Championships and U.S. Challenge) and six-time New England Golden Gloves champion.

Godfrey was a highly decorated U.S. amateur who defeated many of today’s contemporary pro boxers in the amateurs such as former WBA middleweight title challenger Randy “The Gentleman Griffin (24-2-3, 12 KOs), unbeaten heavyweight prospect Chazz “Mensa With Muscles” Witherspoon (23-1, 15 KOs), Devin Vargas (16-0, 7 KOs), Corey “Black Ice” Cummings (16-3, 12 KOs), Leonard “Haitian Sensation” Pierre (18-3, 13 KOs) and John Johnson (12-2, 10 KOs).

IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (25-1, 5 KOs) is significantly ahead of schedule in terms of full recovery from his May 28th surgery to repair a fractured metacarpal bone of the middle finger on his right hand. Malignaggi already is preparing for his November 22nd mega-showdown against Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas, lightly working out in Brooklyn’s famed Gleason’s Gym as well as running three days a week.

“I can start punching in a few weeks,” an ecstatic Malignaggi said after last week’s evaluation by renowned boxing hand specialist, Dr. Steven Margles, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. “I’m building a base now and excited about soon starting training camp (with head trainer Buddy McGirt in Vero Beach, Florida). After I beat Hatton I will be universally recognized as the top junior welterweight in the world.”

Dr. Margles reported, “I’m impressed with how the bone has healed. It looks great and is way ahead of normal healing schedules. Paulie will be able to punch the light bag (probably by the end of next week) and two weeks later punch with more resistance.”
