No go for Pacman-Oscar fight!

Manny Pacquiao has decided to stay at lightweight and defend his WBC 135-lb crown after turning down an offer by Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) for a Dec. 6 fight in Las Vegas, lawyer Franklin Gacal said in a statement released early Thursday morning. "I have been informed that Oscar De La Hoya is firm with the 70-30 revenue sharing and won't budge in to the 60-40 split we have counter-offered. I find the offer of GBP unconscionable hence unacceptable. It would have been an honor to fight De La Hoya on his last fight capping a very illustrious boxing career but under the circumstances, the option left is to move on. I have already made specific instructions to my lawyer to start negotiating with Bob Arum for my next fight with any possible opponent at 135 lbs," said Pacquiao. Gacal said what Pacquiao wanted was a fair share of the mega fight and apparently, Oscar De La Hoya is making an offer that he knows is unacceptable," Gacal stated. It is certain that Pacquiao will face Humberto Soto of Mexico sometime in November in Las Vegas.

This should please some folks as Pac was going to move up about two weight classes to fight Oscar. Now De La Hoya is in a scramble to find someone to fight, and Margarito is waiting in the wings...People will pay to see if Oscar can stop this workhorse that decimated Cotto...

I'm real pleased by this. I was never a fan of this fight being made. Imagine that though, two fighters turning DLH down.

Roach wants Pacman vs Oscar

Trainer Freddie Roach said on Thursday (Wednesday in the US) that he will try to convince Manny Pacquiao to reconsider his decision to decline a fight with Oscar De La Hoya on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas. "Fighting Humberto Soto is ridiculous," Roach told The Manila Bulletin/Fightnews.com during a break in training at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood. Roach said he had already set up everything as far as training for the De La Hoya fight. "We need to fight a perfect fight to win against De La Hoya," said Roach.

Calzaghe: This is my last fight

Super middleweight champion boxer Joe Calzaghe has confirmed that he will quit boxing providing he defeats Roy Jones Jr at Madison Square Garden in New York when the pair clash on November 8. In an interview with Setanta Sports News the undefeated Calzaghe said there's not much more to prove. "At the moment I'm definitely going to retire," said Joe. "As long as I win and I win in style then it'll be my last fight. I've achieved everything I can in boxing. I'm 36 years old and I don't want to keep on fighting. I love boxing and I love what the sport has given me, but I want to retire undefeated."

Calzaghe was full of praise for his opponent describing Jones as one of the greatest fighters of the last 25 years. "Roy Jones went through a bit of a tough time in his career but he's come back and had three great wins. I can't underestimate him. I have to make sure I'm 100%. I'll never forgive myself if I lose my last fight having been undefeated for the last 17 years."

The fight between Calzaghe and Jones was originally due to take place in September, only for Calzaghe to withdraw through injury. Now Calzaghe has dismissed rumours that he is behind schedule in preparing for the fight. "Before I injured my hand I was training for two or three weeks so I've only had a little bit of time off. Although I've not been punching, I've been jogging to keep my fitness levels up. I normally prepare 12 weeks before a fight and I won't start sparring for another six weeks. So I'm ahead of schedule and have plenty of time to get in shape for the fight."

Regional title bout highlights ESPN2 card in DC
Thompson headlines, Flores added to card

A junior middleweight regional title bout is the main event of a seven-bout boxing card tomorrow night at the Ibiza Nightclub in Washington, DC. The main event and co-feature bouts will be televised by ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights.

The main event is a 10-round bout for the vacant USBO junior middleweight title. Ishmail “The Arsenal” Arvin of Baltimore, Md., will battle Philadelphia’s Anthony “The Messenger” Thompson.

Arvin, with a win-loss record of 14-1-4, 6 KOs, has only fought twice since December of 2007, both bouts ending in draws. Arvin will be looking for his first win since June 15, 2006 when he won a six-round unanimous decision over David Estrada in Glen Burnie, Md.

Thompson, 23-2, 17 KOs, will be coming off an even longer time of inactivity. He has not fought since losing a 10-round split decision to Yuri Foreman on June 9, 2007 in Madison Square Garden in New York City. The loss broke an eight-bout winning streak.

The co-feature bout will match West Hills, Calif. cruiserweight Ola “Kryptonite” Afolabi against DeLeon Tinsley of Orlando, Fla., in an eight-round contest. Afolabi (12-1-3, 5 KOs) is unbeaten in his last 10 bouts and scored a 10th round TKO over previously undefeated Eric Fields in his last outing on April 12 in Tacoma, Wash. Tinsley (9-3-1, 5 KOs) is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision over former WBA Light Heavyweight world champion Lou Del Valle on July 18 in Miami, Fla.

Undefeated Oxon Hill light-heavyweight Alexander "The Great" Johnson (5-0, 3 KOs), will now be taking on Zeferino Albino (3-6-2, 1 KO), of Philadelphia, Pa., in a six-round rematch, instead of Reggie LaCrete, who was injured in training. Johnson defeated Albino by a four-round unanimous decision last November. Since then, Johnson has won just once in seven outings.

Just added to the card is undefeated USBA Cruiserweight Champion BJ "El Peligroso" Flores (21-0-1, 13 KOs), of Chandler, Ariz. He will face Cory "The Cobra" Phelps (13-4-1, 7 KOs), of Cattlesburg, Ky., in a six-rounder. Flores is coming off a unanimous decision win for his title on Feb. 8, over Darnell Wilson.

Undefeated Brandywine, Md. heavyweight Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell (4-0-1, 3 KOs) will take on Elkhart, Indiana’s Ryan “The Gatekeeper” St. Germain in a four-round contest. Mitchell scored a first-round knockout over Henry Namauu on July 23 in Cabazon, CA. St. Germain (2-2, 2 KOs) will be trying to bounce back from a four-round unanimous decision to Jim Emrick on May 30 in Monroeville, Pa.

Three other bouts will be placed on the card.

The card is a co-promotion of Major Heavy Hitters Promotions of DC and Duva Boxing of New Jersey The matchmaker is Chris Middendorf.

The 'Tijuana Tornado' unwinds!
New welterweight king relaxes at home, talks about Williams, Clottey, De La Hoya, Cotto

“I am very content and happy,” stated WBA Welterweight Champion Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KOs) regarding his come-from-behind defeat of Puerto Rican sensation Miguel Cotto last month.

“Now I am categorized as the best welterweight in the world. I had mentioned before that there was a question mark, and that on July 26th we would have the answe—and I demonstrated who the best is. A lot of people didn’t give me credit, but I had confidence in my preparation and in my team, and everything came out in our favor.”

FightNews spoke with Margarito last week as the fighter, his wife Michelle, and friends enjoyed a night out in his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico.

“Before the fight, I thought it was going to happen as it played out,” recalls Margarito about what is sure to be a top candidate for ‘Fight of the Year.’ “I was confident that about in the eighth round I would be able to knock him out, but I didn’t mention it before the fight.

“I don’t look for the knock out but I didn’t think it was going to go past the eighth. I give Cotto a lot of credit for lasting until the eleventh. He showed great heart.”

The ever-confident Margarito was at no loss for words in describing his opponent’s style and his strategy:

“We felt that hitting and then running was going to be his strategy, but I knew that once I caught up with him with my shots, I was going to be able to defeat him.

“I wasn’t frustrated with his tactics; we knew that was going to be his strategy. We knew that, little by little, our shots were going to make a difference.”

Days after the fateful night, reports from Puerto Rico surfaced speculating that Margarito’s out of this world feat could not have occurred without any chemical help in the form of performance enhancing drugs. Margarito takes in stride, and with humor, the idea that he would take steroids.

“It hurts them a lot that I was able to defeat their countryman. That rumor began in Puerto Rico. I don’t know why they would publish something like that if they don’t have any proof and they are not sure. I guess it was just anger on their part. A reporter from Puerto Rico called me and I told him that the only thing I had before the fight was four gallons of milk!

“I heard another rumor that he had been poisoned, but I guess he was just poisoned with my punches. Since then, they have called me and apologized and they now want to honor me. I think I gave Cotto a great fight and this is how it goes. I am naturally strong.”

Now with the world at his fingertips, Margarito is not going to sit on his laurel, but is ready to climb back inside the ring as soon as possible.

“I do want to come back and fight before the end of the year, maybe in November or December,” says Margarito. “Bob Arum is working on it and I hope it happens.”

Although Margarito is anxious to give boxing fans one more outing before the end of the year, he understands that he is in the position to pick and choose his opponent, regardless of any devices any fighter or promoter might use to get him in the squared circle. Such was the case of a fight with Paul Williams, when his promoter Dan Goossen offered an unprecedented $4 million dollar purse to Margarito for the rematch of their 2007 WBO title clash which Williams won with a unanimous decision.

“Whatever Bob decides,” states Margarito without hesitation. “If Bob decides that we don’t need that fight and there are others, fine. If others don’t want to fight, I’ll fight anybody that they put in front of me.”

But reports of disagreements between Top Rank and the Paul Williams camp, including his advisor Al Haymon, might delay the much-anticipated return bout between the “Tijuana Tornado” and the “Punisher.”

“I don’t know what kind of dealings there is between them,” states Margarito referring to the discussions between Top Rank and Goossen Tutor. “They know better than I, about that. If people ask for that fight, I am willing to do what the people ask for. Many fans have said that they don’t want me to fight him because he is just going to run and not give a good fight like Cotto did, but I am willing to fight anybody.”

More than likely, Margarito will face Joshua Clottey, another Top Rank fighter who just defeated Zab Judah for the IBF title that Margarito vacated earlier this year.

“They had mentioned that fight (with Clottey) to me, but nothing is set in stone. As I have heard, they have that date reserved at Dodger Stadium.”

Also talks of a showdown with the Oscar de la Hoya are among the potential matchups for the newly crowned Margarito.

“Bob is supposed to get together with Oscar and see what can come of that,” says the champ. “But it looks like Oscar wants to face Pacquiao.”

Margarito does not pretend to understand why the “Golden Boy” would want to fight “Pacman” since he knows that a fight between himself and De La Hoya could be one for the ages.

“A lot of people are asking, ‘Why Pacquiao?’ He is a smaller fighter. I think that a fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Antonio Margarito would be great for Mexico!”

Throughout his career that began in Tijuana 15 years ago, Margarito has always felt the love and support of this his hometown, even more so after the Cotto fight.

Recently at a concert presented by one his favorite singers, Vicente Fernandez, the outpouring of love and respect from people of Tijuana was incredible to the soft-spoken, humble fighter.

“I am very grateful to all the people of Tijuana and all the boxing fans. I want to thank all the people that went to see me in Las Vegas, all the people from Los Angeles, Phoenix, Texas, from everywhere. Thank you for believing in Antonio Margarito.”

Good read about Margarito. Although the fight with Williams may not happen this year, a rematch with Clottey may not be that bad...

I know you're disappointed about the decision that Oscar made to fight Manny, r2r. I am too, since there are many other fighters out there who would give Oscar a better matchup (and beat him).

ABRAHAM: "IF THERE'S A CHANCE TO WIN BY KNOCKOUT, I'LL GO FOR IT”

October 4th shaping up as a busy day for boxing

Press Release: IBF middleweight champion King Arthur Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs) will take on mandatory challenger Raul Marquez in Bamberg, Germany on October 4th. Speaking at today's official press conference in his home city, the 28-year-old said: “Marquez is a very experienced and tough boxer. I expect a hard-fought battle that will go the full distance but if there is a chance to win by knockout, I'll go for it.”

Back in June, Abraham and Marquez shook hands following their successful fights in Hollywood, Florida. While King Arthur knocked out Edison Miranda in the fourth round, Marquez (41-3, 29 KOs) defeated Giovanni Lorenzo in a title eliminator. “I could not watch
the fight live as I was warming up for my own bout but of course I have watched the tape and analyzed it with my coach,” Abraham stated. “I know about his strengths. I will be prepared.”

Coach Ulli Wegner is full of respect for Marquez and warned everyone not to take the 37-year-old challenger lightly. “He is a very strong opponent,” he said. “Arthur needs to be on alert. But the preparation has been going very well. The victories in the ring have helped Arthur to mature. His attitude in practice is perfect.”

It will be a special fight for Abraham as it was in Bamberg where he started his boxing career and also gave his comeback after breaking his jaw, knocking out Sebastien Demers in the third round in May 2007. “It is great to come back here,” he said. “I am really looking forward to it.”

Haye still seeking foe

Former unified cruiserweight champion-turned-heavyweight David Haye believes heavyweight boxers refuse to fight him because "they know it's going to be their last fight." He has yet to find an opponent for his debut fight at the O2 Arena in London on November 15th. Haye told Setanta Sports News that he was in talks with four heavyweight boxers for the fight later this year and that one unnamed boxer had backed out. "He agreed the money, he agreed the fight, the date; everything was sorted. Obviously he's gone home and watched some DVDs of me in action and made a U-turn. He thought I was just a cruiserweight champion but he's watched me in action and thought to himself "he's no ordinary cruiserweight."

Haye also revealed that money was an issue, claiming that many of the names touted were fighting for their pension. "They've come in with some ridiculous figures. A lot more than I'll be making from the fight after all's said and done. They realize they're not only going to get beat, but they'll get violently smashed."

When manager Steve Nelson read the report on Fightnews that no one wants to fight David Haye, the first words out of his mouth were, "That's not true, Hasim Rahman is willing and able to fight him." Nelson says negotiations for a fight between Haye and the former heavyweight champion have been going on for a couple months with no concrete offers from the Haye camp and Rahman is waiting for the opportunity. "To my knowledge we have been in negotiations with Haye," stated the Rock. "I think David wants to make himself out to be the best heavyweight. He can't beat any of the champions. He wants to use his cruiserweight title to give him one opportunity for a big payday." Nelson and Rahman say that they are willing to fight Haye in England. "They have not made a formal offer to us, so that shows they don't want to fight Hasim," said Nelson. Rahman claims his team has never come out with outrageous money demands so that should not be a sticking point. "David, you can't beat any heavyweight out there," continued Rahman. "No one is ducking you. All you have to do is step up to the plate with me. If he wants to fight, I will make sure the canvas is full of hay so Haye has something soft to fall on!"

Maskaev on the mend

Team Maskaev: ( L-R) Victor Valle, Dennis Rappaport, Fred Kesch, Oleg Maskaev

Former WBC champion and current WBC/IBF #6 ranked heavyweight Oleg Maskaev will return to the ring this weekend for the first time since his March loss to Samuel Peter in Cancun, Mexico when he takes on former victim Robert Hawkins in the Red Square in Moscow, Russia in a much anticipated local showdown. "The fight taking place in Red Square will be an historic event," Maskaev (34-6, 26 KO's) told Fightnews a few days before the event. "I take great pride in headlining this event. It will be attended by the Russian Olympic Team as well as Russian professional and amateur stars of past and present. It is expected that the crowd will be in excess of 25,000 people so I expect the atmosphere to be electric."

The fight against Hawkins, a rematch of a 1995 fight in which Maskaev knocked Hawkins out in four rounds, will mark the first fight in Maskaev's quest to once again win a heavyweight title. He says that coming off the loss to Peter he feels better and is ready to give it another run. "Mentally I feel very strong," he said. "The Peter loss was very frustrating; the strange circumstances and bizarre events leading to the fight, occurring during the fight as well as following the fight will be a subject that will be reviewed by the Court of Sports Arbitration (e.g. issues regarding the WBC, Peter's elevation to interim champion, etc). It was almost unbelievable. It felt as if I was fighting Don King, the WBC, and Samuel Peter, but more will be said on this matter later." Arbitration on the matter will begin at the end of September, according to Maskaev manager Fred Kesch.

Meanwhile, the 39-year old Maskaev says his focus is firmly on Hawkins. "Boxing can be very unpredictable and I prefer to focus on the task at hand, Robert Hawkins. Hawkins is a capable and experienced professional and although we fought before, it was only the 4th professional fight for both of us and Hawkins is a lot more savvy now," Maskaev reasoned. "He has gone the distance with Peter, (David) Tua, and almost everyone else that he has fought. I don't believe in making predictions but I feel confident that I will be successful."

"I was in training camp for a little over six weeks and I had started preparation in Sacramento, California approximately six weeks prior to that. I am well prepared for the fight on September 6th," continued Maskaev. "Physically I am in excellent shape and I feel excellent. My back and elbow are fine."

As for the future, Maskaev said retirement is not in his sights quite yet. "I plan on staying active and I would love to fight the winner of the Peter-Klitschko fight," he said.

After a looong, agonizing delay with nothing going on in August, it was good to get the WELCOME BACK to boxing tonight with a lil' bit of brutality tonight.

The Season Ender of Friday Night Fights came to an end (How I wish there was an ESPN3, at least) with an explosive 2-round demolition of James Kirkland living up to his trainer's (Ann Wolfe) desires. Kirkland's corner didn't look too happy about him taking some unecessary shots from his opponent, but the (LIVELY) bloodthristy crowd of Austin, Texas didn't seem to mind.

After this was over, I flipped over to ShoBox were the Columbian Yhonny (spelling?) Perez was gutting his substitute-opponent by the 4th round. Switched channels late and came back to see the fight was over (No surprise) and onto the main event. I can't recall seeing these two guys before (A Tijuana fighter and a Puerto Rican) but it was a worthy 10-rounder with each guy never truly dominating each other.

Hope this all means for an exciting Fall season starting tomorrow night with HBO's card!

Wonder if they're gonna ring the 10-bell for Giardello tomorrow night.
