Junior middleweight Grady Brewer (22-11, 12 KOs), who won the second season of "The Contender," is planning a comeback. Brewer hasn't fought since outpointing Steve Forbes in the final on Sept. 26, 2006, because of a serious knee injury. Previous comeback attempts were scuttled by ongoing knee problems. Brewer, 37, has agreed to a six-rounder against an opponent to be named on promoter Tony Holden's Sept. 12 card at the Comanche Nation Casino in his hometown of Lawton, Okla. "He's going to test his knee," said Jeff Wald of the Tournament of Contenders, which promotes Brewer. "Tony Holden is doing a favor for us and we'll see what happens. I feel terrible about what happened to that kid. He can really fight, but has had some really bad luck. Hopefully, he can put the injuries behind him."

Lightweight contender Amir Khan (18-0, 14 KOs), 21, the 2007 ESPN.com prospect of the year and 2004 British Olympic silver medalist, made a big impression on new trainer Jorge Rubio, who was hired last month. "It's my ambition to make Amir a world champion," said Rubio, who used to work with the Cuban national team and now lives in Miami. "I believe he has got the talent to reign for years. I have been working on his defense and his footwork, but I'm not looking at changing him too much, just improving on certain areas. It will take time, but Amir has already gotten better in the few weeks I've worked with him, and I'm seeing the difference every day. Amir Khan is a smart guy and I only have to tell him something once before he puts into practice. He has all the tools to become a world champion." Khan's first fight with Rubio will take place Sept. 6 in Manchester, England. Promoter Frank Warren's Sports Network said it was trying to finalize an agreement for Khan to face ex-featherweight titleholder Derrick Gainer, who hasn't fought since last July and only had three fights since 2003. "Jorge is a great trainer," Khan said. "I knew as soon as I met him that he was the man for me. I'd met Buddy McGirt, Freddie Roach and really liked Floyd Mayweather Sr., but when I hooked up with Jorge I loved his style and his teaching methods. He can definitely take me to the next level, which is a world title."

After the third postponement last week of Joseph Agbeko's first bantamweight title defense against William Gonzalez, the fight will again be rescheduled. It had been slated for a card Aug. 2 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, but was called off the week of the fight because of issues with the paperwork for Gonzalez's visa. Now, promoter Don King might put the fight on the undercard of his show Sept. 13 in Biloxi, Miss. That Showtime card is headlined by Nate Campbell's mandatory lightweight title defense against Joan Guzman. If Agbeko-Gonzalez lands on the card, it won't be part of Showtime's telecast.

Yeah, it's a real small venue, you'd think the biggest event they'd get there would be an ESPN type of fight. It's better suited for club fights rather than big event bouts.

Speaking of venues (Don't mean to interupt the news for a bit) but what fights have any of yall been to?

Some of Televised ones I've been at:

Juan Lazcano/Dorin Spivey (ESPN2 Friday Night Fights)

Oleg Maskaev/Corey Sanders (Fox Sports) On the undercard, Jeremy Williams scored a beast of a KO against Louie Monaco in the 1st round. Don't think I'll NEVER see a more earth-shaking 1-punch KO like that up close ever again in my lifetime.

Samuel Peter/Taurus Sykes (Showtime)

Ricky Hatton/Jose Luis Castillo (HBO) Crazy @$$ fuckin' Brits in Vegas

Diego Corrales/Jose Luis Castillo II (Showtime PPV) The whole time I was in Vegas, I heard nothing about Castillo's infamous weight fuck-ups. But oh well.
MVC-018S.jpg

R.I.P. Chico

Daniel Ponce de Leon/Rey Bautista (Boxing After Dark)

Zab/Floyd (HBO PPV)
497c6f9c.jpg

Definetly the most electric atmosphere I've experienced at the fights (More than Corrales/Castillo, to my surprise)
TONS of celebs there

Oh yea, and when this shit happened:

I thought Floyd was gonna get DQ'd because Roger jumped in the ring. Didn't find out til later that Steele (LUCKILY) called time.

Ruslan Chagaev Update

Heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev has taken his first steps in the famous Universum-Gym in Hamburg after his serious injury on June 26th. He's fighting harder than ever for his recovery, and after five weeks of rehabilitation Chagaev is now able to cycle with a special bandage on his left foot and is doing some upper body workouts. "It's nice to have all the other guys surrounding me," stated Ruslan. "That gives me a big boost." Chagaev suffered a complete tear of his achilles tendon and therefore named the “champion in recess” by the WBA. He will have time to recover from his injury and has to face the winner of the August 30 fight between Nikolai Valuev and John Ruiz no later than June 26, 2009. "I won´t watch this fight," stated Chagaev in regard to the Valuev-Ruiz match. "I don't care about these two guys. I have beaten them both in the past. I'll be back in the ring and show who's the real champ. My doctor says it normally takes about 300 days to get back into business. Hopefully I´ll be faster." Ruslan's trainer Michael Timm adds, "He's working harder than before his injury. His will is stronger than ever. That why I don´t worry about him." First time for Ruslan at ringside after his injury will be on September 27th in Hamburg, when WBA cruiserweight champion Firat Arslan makes his mandatory defense against #1 contender Guillermo Jones from Panama.

STAR BOXING HEAD TO ATLANTIC CITY SEPTEMBER 5

On September 5th at the Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing returns with yet another sensational night of boxing. Mike Arnaoutis and Kevin Johnson, two of Star's top fighters will be showcasing their goods in a special double feature.

"I'm really looking forward to this card," said CEO of Star Boxing Joe DeGuardia. "Anytime you have either of these guys fighting as the main event on a show it's going to be an exciting night of boxing. Now that we have both Kevin and Mike on the same card together, I can only begin to imagine what Bally's is going to be like that night. We feel that both Mike and Kevin are ready to challenge for major world titles and we expect them to both look spectacular and put on a great show come September 5th," stated DeGuardia.

Ken Condon, Sports and Entertainment Consultant for Bally's Atlantic City states that once again, "Bally's Atlantic City will host an incredible night of boxing action on September 5th. Both main events feature, not only local fighters, but local fighters that excite fans and leave everything they have in the ring. Arnaoutis has really connected with the Atlantic City fans, and we're excited to get a look at Kevin Johnson during his rise to top of the heavyweight division. This is shaping up to be must see fight card."

In the main event WBO #11, IBF #14"Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis (19-2-2, 9KO's) of Atlantic City, NJ takes on power punching Nasser Athumani (20-6, 16KO's) of South Egg Harbor, NJ in a ten round jr. welterweight contest.
Arnaoutis has become a fan favorite here in the U.S., particularly in his adopted hometown of Atlantic City, for his non-stop, always exciting, aggressive style. Bally's will be packed with Arnaoutis's large Greek fan base, waving their flags, banging their drums and chanting for the "Pride of Greece", "Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis.

JOHNSON TAKES ON FORMER WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP In the second co-main event of the evening the WBA #7 rated heavyweight in the world, and top American heavyweight hopeful Kevin "Kingpin" Johnson (19-0-1, 6KO's) of Asbury Park, NJ takes on former WBA World Heavyweight Champion Bruce "The Atlantic City Express" Seldon (38-6, 34KO's) of Atlantic City, NJ. Johnson has continuously climbed the heavyweight ranks since he first turned pro back in 2003 and a win over Seldon should solidify his position for a heavyweight championship bout. This fight is very important for Johnson not only for what a victory does for his career, but also it is a chance to take care of a personal vendetta against Seldon. Seldon has been calling out Johnson for some time now and Johnson has seemingly had enough. Upon receiving a direct letter from Seldon, Johnson called his promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing to set the fight up so that he can once and for all send the former world champion Seldon into retirement.

Gorres: Montiel better than Vic

Former world title challenger Z Gorres believes Fernando Montiel is the better fighter than Vic Darchinyan and that a fight with the Mexican champion is something that he feels will finally establish his name as the one of the legitimate stars of the super flyweight division. Gorres was one of the guests of Tuesday morning's "Sports Chat" hosted by this writer and aired over Philippine radio station Sports Radio DZSR 918khz. "Montiel is more skillful than Darchinyan that is why I want to get that rematch with Montiel because I know this time I can score a convincing win against him," said Gorres during the interview. Gorres said he still relishes a rematch with Darchinyan but that his unfinished business with Montiel will most likely be his next world title opportunity.

Hall-of-Fame promoter Bob Arum told "Sports Chat" in one of his appearances last week that he is in talks with the camp of Gorres led by the youthful Michael Aldeguer, son of well-respected boxing patron Antonio Aldeguer. Arum told the show he wants to pit Montiel and Gorres in a rematch on the ambitious Top Rank card in Macau tentatively set on December 13. The southpaw Gorres, 26, battled Darchinyan to a draw February of this year in a 12-round title eliminator held at the posh Waterfront Hotel in Cebu. Exactly a year before that, Gorres (28-2-2, 15 KOs) lost a controversial split decision to WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel of Mexico also in Cebu.

Valuev inked through 2011

Three weeks ahead of his clash with John Ruiz for the vacant WBA heavyweight title, Nikolai Valuev has extended his contract with Sauerland Event and the cooperation with Don King through 2011. The decision came easily, said the Russian Giant. “I am happy we got everything sorted out last Saturday. Sauerland Event managing director Chris Meyer was equally delighted about the contract extension. “We have proven in the last couple of years that we can work together well,” Meyer said. “We look forward to continuing the successful cooperation. Nikolai´s signature is a very important part of our future plans. Everybody was convinced that it would be best to sign the contract before the next fight. For us it was important to show Nikolai that he has our full backing. The axis between St. Petersburg, Berlin and Fort Lauderdale will remain alive.”

Hatton Explains Graham Split

Following the recent parting of the ways with long time trainer and friend Billy Graham, IBO junior-welterweight champ Ricky Hatton has broken his silence and revealed his version of the split between one of the most successful partnerships in British boxing.

Graham revealed recently that he had been sacked by the popular Manchester ‘Hitman’ but Hatton insists that his highly physical workrate was becoming too much for Graham’s body to handle.

Speaking to Steve Lillis in the News Of The World Hatton said: "We had a meeting and I said, ’Billy, you’re falling to bits. You admitted on T.V that you’re physically beaten and told me you can’t even swim with your daughter.’

“The work has got harder for Billy over the years and he has been a bit slower. That is not his fault, but he is in his 50’s and can’t do what he could at 33 or 43. I love Billy, but can’t have a trainer who has admitted umpteen times that he is physically beaten. How can I expect him to be okay for the next 12 weeks while I’m preparing to fight [Paul] Malignaggi?"

The ‘Hitman’ went on to say: "How do I know how hard or correctly I’m punching when he had needles and cannot feel his hands when we’re on the pads? He might say, ’You’re hitting hard’ but I would be thinking, ’How do you know? You can’t feel your hands.’ If he thinks anything of me he’ll have a good look in the mirror and admit, ’I’m falling to bits. I’m physically done.’

"I don’t want to hear from my trainer, ’Don’t worry, Rick, I’ll get through this training session.’ It is me who has to get through sessions because I’m the one taking the punches [in fights]. Maybe I should’ve realised Billy was struggling a couple of fights ago, but I’ve put it off and put it off. Billy thinks other people have conspired for him to leave, but I am the boss and make the final decisions."

Pacquiao-De La Hoya update

Manny Pacquiao will come out with an official statement Thursday in Manila (Wednesday in the US) whether he will face Oscar De La Hoya on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas. "Manny Pacquiao will issue a statement tomorrow (Thursday)," said Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal from General Santos City. "Out of respect for (Top Rank chief) Bob Arum, we will make the announcement tomorrow." Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) has already forwarded the final document containing the financial terms to Pacquiao and even Bob Arum told The Manila Bulletin/Fightnews that "we will know within the next 24 hours" if it will push through or not. Pacquiao was on a medical mission on Wednesday in South Cotabato but has been briefed about the contents of the GBP counter-proposal. Last Tuesday, Pacquiao also told the paper that there is a "75 percent" likelihood that the De La Hoya bout will materialize. Both have agreed to meet at 147 lbs (or less) during the official weighin and that 8 oz gloves will also be used in the clash being penciled for the 17,000-seat MGM Grand. In the event the De La Hoya fight doesn't happen, Arum will pit Pacquiao against Humberto Soto of Mexico on Nov. 1 at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. The equally-dangerous Soto, according to Arum, has been put on stand-by status.

Boxer fined $10,000 for positive steroid test

RENO, Nev. (AP)—Suspended boxer Joey Gilbert agreed to pay a $10,000 fine for a positive steroid test as part of a settlement with the Nevada Athletic Commission that will allow him to return to the ring as soon as Sept. 22.

Gilbert agreed Tuesday to the fine and a one-year suspension retroactive to his last fight nearly a year ago. In exchange, the panel dropped all but one charge related to a banned substance found in his system—a metabolite from an anabolic steroid.

The dropped charges related to amphetamine, methamphetamine, oxazepam, diazepam and nordiazepam.

The 31-year-old middleweight from Reno gained international attention on the NBC reality series “The Contender” in 2005. He was temporarily suspended when he tested positive for the substances after his knockout victory over Charles Howe in Reno last Sept. 21.

A licensed lawyer who was a three-time national college champion at Nevada, Gilbert has a 16-1 record with 12 knockouts as a professional.

No go for Pacman-Oscar fight!

Manny Pacquiao has decided to stay at lightweight and defend his WBC 135-lb crown after turning down an offer by Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) for a Dec. 6 fight in Las Vegas, lawyer Franklin Gacal said in a statement released early Thursday morning. "I have been informed that Oscar De La Hoya is firm with the 70-30 revenue sharing and won't budge in to the 60-40 split we have counter-offered. I find the offer of GBP unconscionable hence unacceptable. It would have been an honor to fight De La Hoya on his last fight capping a very illustrious boxing career but under the circumstances, the option left is to move on. I have already made specific instructions to my lawyer to start negotiating with Bob Arum for my next fight with any possible opponent at 135 lbs," said Pacquiao. Gacal said what Pacquiao wanted was a fair share of the mega fight and apparently, Oscar De La Hoya is making an offer that he knows is unacceptable," Gacal stated. It is certain that Pacquiao will face Humberto Soto of Mexico sometime in November in Las Vegas.
