"FINALLY....merce77...HAS..." - you know the rest

Glad to see you back here...been a long time...looks like there are two fights upcoming that are big enough for you to come "out of hiding" :D:D:D j/k

But on to the fights you mentioned...They are polar opposites IMO, both in the matchup and how I feel about the fighters...I'll tackle Floyd/JMM first...

This fight (I hope) will be better than it shows on paper...Yes Floyd is a great fighter, and has all the skills in the world, but he's going against one of the smartest fighters in the game today, and in my honest opinion the best p4p boxer out there after Floyd took the break. While I do see this as a counterpunchers match up, I see one fighter being more aggressive than the other (Marquez) and try to test Floyd's power and counter speed early...When JMM has that registered, he will adjust in the later rounds. If Floyd does not become more active by rounds 5 or 6, then the crowd there (which may be in JMM's favor anyway) go way over for Marquez, which could sway the judges. If I were Floyd, I would show that I was better than Marquez by not only outboxing him but also outpoint him when he gets inside, which may also mean nullifying the jabs that he throws. I see Floyd winning a close, yet better than expected fight...Would be his most difficult fight since his first JLC bout...

Now on to the next fight...Yeah, I know...people are talking about the fight already as a "blockbuster"...But just like the Cotto/Margarito bout, that is to be expected...It will look like a slugfest, with Pac going for the homerun in nearly every punch he throws. Cotto methodically gauges his opponent and does his damage where/when necessary. In his last few fights, he has gotten off to good starts...Will he be able to do that against Pac who also goes for fast starts as well? Who knows...I do know one thing, though...Cotto won't (or shouldn't) do the same thing he has done in the last few fights, and you know what that is...:D

With that being said, I will pick the winner of this fight this way...with the first fight, that pits two of my favorite fighters, so it's hard to go against someone I like...Here, I don't like Cotto...I admit to that...however, I LOATHE Pacquiao. He's getting way too much credit for most of the "big" fights that he has been in, and someone needs to put him in his place. Since this bout is at Welterweight, and Cotto is a true Welter (and hardly goes above the 147 limit), he should be able to do the job.

First off, good to be back.
Couldn't have put it better myself, I just think Cotto's faced the better oppostion overall and pulled himself out of more fucked up situations. Like I used to get down on Floyd, that's how I'm getting down on Manny. First off, straight ducking Marquez after Marquez, at least to hardcore fans, was robbed in that second fight. Then Pac moves to lightweight and fights DAVID DIAZ!! WHO?!?!? He wins an alphabet belt, then Marquez moves into the division and promptly knocks the lineal champ the fuck out and Pac runs to 147 and fights an old sun-dried DLH who he makes come down to a weight he hadn't fought at in 10 years. All the while Marquez knocks out the two best fighters in a division he wasn't expected to be able to fight at in the first place. Then they give Pac mad props for ko'ing HATTON who'd already been ko'ed by PBF and rocked hard by Collazo and Lazcano and frankly has no defense. I look at the fact that even when DLH grazed Pacman he was moving him. Now Cotto is probably going to do more than graze Pac and the two losses Pac has by KO were from body shots at a much smaller weight by much smaller punchers. If Cotto can sustain the opening rounds and land some hard shots to the body and start to make Pac wanna backpedal, it's gonna be a long night. Because making Pac move backwards is like stopping a shark from swimming, he can't do shit, I think Cotto has enuff chin and fortitude to withstand Pacs power, Pac doesn't hit harder than Mosley or a plaster wrapped Margacheato, and he dealt well with Mosley, Judah and Malignaggi's speed tho frankly none of them are as fast as Pac. I think Pac is just out of his depth, and Roach will have to come up with a better game plan than "we're gonna knock him out".

As for the Floyd and Marquez fight, you feel exactly how I do so there isn't any reason for me to expand on that. Marquez will be Floyd's hardest fight since Castillo I, two master boxers, the difference will be speed and if the ref lets Floyd get away with jammin that forearm and elbow in the guys face and shoving his head back, if you watch the first Castillo fight, the ref took that away from him and he was pretty much a sitting duck in those late rounds. But realistically if I were going to bet on this fight my money would be on Floyd, his size and speed will be too much of an advantage I think, but especially with the disadvantages he has, if Marquez makes it a great fight and makes Floyd fight and Floyd looks just slightly subpar, like you said, it could sway the judges, I mean Floyd is hated enuff for it to happen, but then again there is too much money to be made on a Pac/Floyd match up. And Floyd has always had trouble wiht a good jab, it's really his only weakness. I almost want MArquez to beat Floyd because that would cement him as the fighter of the decade and he's truly earned consideration for that title in the last 5 or 6 years BUT I also do want to see Floyd utterly school Manny when they do fight. And a Marquez/Cotto matcup is also pretty attractive, I think Marquez would chop him up with that uppercut all night and surprise the shit out of everyone and KO Cotto late. Anyway, I'll be back more often from now on, time to ressurect the thread now that there are some worthy matchups worth discussing months in advance.:D

By the way the three most masterful performances I've seen in the last year, Bhop/Pavlik, Mosley/Margacheato, Marquez/Diaz(especially the late rounds).

LOL @ Margacheato....Shoot, I'm surprised no one has called him Marg-a-Chee-Tos :D

You are right on two things, Pac can't fight going backwards (Marquez proved that) and Cotto should have the chin to sustain Pac's punches (funny since Torres was able to check him, but Mosley and Judah couldn't)...I just hope Cotto doesn't have to get too rough in this fight...You know I didn't like him resorting to low blows against Judah, and the same with Clottey (plus bodyslammin him) so this time I hope he keeps it clean...

As far as the other fight goes, it will be controlled by the use of the forearm by Floyd. He has had some trouble when he's not able to use it (Judah early rds., Hatton early rds.) so thy could be something that he should adjust to. If Richard Steele refs this one, then Floyd may have a problem :D

Well, I didn't feel to bad for Josh being that he is a dirty headbutter himself, but you're right about the Zab fight, I don't think Cotto will have to resort to any tactics like that with Pac, but if he has to I'm sure he'll have no problem ripping a page out of the Eusebio Pedroza handbook. But I wouldn't want to see him win unfairly. Cotto needs a trainer who'll help him develop his boxing skills more, he's become a pretty good boxer but I think a guy like Nacho Beristain could help him greatly in a fight like this being that Nacho has faced Manny three times already with two different fighters.

Funny but my nephew is a huge Floyd fan and he said he'[s kinda leary about this fight with Marquez. He said something about Flyd being away for a while plus he hasn't fought really stiff competition in a long while. Marquez has moved up in weight and looked better in each fight since Floyd's break. Plus the mysterious rib injury, which I think was a business ploy and a really smart one but it helps Marquez too who has even more time to get his game together. Personally I';m more excited about Floyd/Marquez than I am about the other.

Man I didn't even realize how much of a Floyd fan I still am until he retired. :) I really just wish that he would have fought Shane Mosley before anybody, Shane has more than earned it. I wonder how much Cotto paid Mosley to perform that hit!!!

ATLANTA - Former boxing champion Vernon Forrest was shot and killed during an apparent robbery in Atlanta, police said Sunday.

Atlanta Police Sgt. Lisa Keyes said in an e-mail Sunday that Forrest may have been robbed and was shot "multiple times in the back" Saturday night in Atlanta.

Keyes said there are no suspects.

"Vernon was one of the few decent people in boxing," promoter Gary Shaw said Sunday.

"I mean really decent. He cared about mentally challenged adults. He cared about kids. I just can't believe it."

Mark Guilbeau, an investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office, said an autopsy is planned for Sunday.

Forrest, a native of Augusta, Ga., who lived in Atlanta, was a member of the 1992 Olympic team. He was also a former WBC super welterweight champion.

Forrest, 38, took two wins over Sugar Shane Mosley in 2002. On Sept. 13, 2008, Forrest reclaimed his WBC 154-pound title by beating Sergio Mora.

The win over Mora was Forrest's last fight. He suffered a rib injury while training for an April fight against Jason LeHoullier. That fight was canceled, and Forrest had to vacate his title.

There were tentative plans for a title fight against Sergio Martinez, perhaps in October, according to Shaw.

Forrest, who had a 41-3 career record with 29 knockouts, is the third prominent boxer to die this month.

Former two-time champion Arturo Gatti, who retired in 2007, was found dead July 11 at a Brazilian resort. Gatti's wife, Amanda Rodrigues, is being held as the prime suspect.

Another former champion, Alexis Arguello, was found dead on July 1 at his home in Managua, Nicaragua. He was elected mayor of Nicaragua's capital last year.

:( :( :( :( :(

It has been a bad 4 weeks in the world of sports...First Arguello commits suicide, then McNair gets shot, then Gatti, and now Forrest...

After reading about what he's done for the city of Atlanta, he's done much more outside the ring than in it, shoulder injury or not. This guy gave so much to the community and then somebody had to take it away...for what? Temporary gains? :smh:

It disgusts me that this happens to good people...

Cops: Ex-boxing champ Forrest exchanged gunfire

ATLANTA (AP) - Former boxing champion Vernon Forrest exchanged gunfire with robbery suspects before being shot to death, Atlanta police said Monday.

The 38-year-old former two-division champion, who gained notoriety when he became the first boxer to defeat Shane Mosley, was killed Saturday night. Investigators believe between 20 and 24 shots were fired from two guns, said Lt. Keith Meadows. Police recovered Forrest's gun and one shell casing belonging to that gun, he said.

Forrest was putting air in his car tires at a service station when a man asked for money, his manager Charles Watson said. When he pulled his wallet out, the man snatched it and started running, and Forrest took off after him, Watson said.

Meadows would not confirm those details and said investigators have no new leads on suspects. Fulton County medical examiner Michele Stauffenberg had confirmed the case was a homicide and that the autopsy showed Forrest died from "multiple gunshot wounds involving the torso and thigh."

Forrest, a native of Augusta, Georgia, who lived in Atlanta, was a member of the 1992 Olympic team along with Oscar De La Hoya. The popular fighter later won welterweight and junior middleweight titles and compiled a professional record of 41-3 with 29 knockouts.

Forrest turned pro not long after the Barcelona Olympics, when he was stricken by food poisoning and lost in the opening round. He won his first world title by defeating Raul Frank at Madison Square Garden for the vacant IBF welterweight belt in May 2001, and less than a year later handed Mosley his first career loss to capture the WBC title.

The smooth-punching Forrest defended the belt against Mosley, winning by unanimous decision six months later, before losing to Ricardo Mayorga in January 2003. It was Forrest's first loss, and he'd lose again to Mayorga in a close bout many believe he won.

Friends say Forrest's true calling was helping children and others with disabilities and he had been honored for his efforts in Atlanta.

Mosley praised Forrest for his boxing and his positive effect within the community.

"I viewed Vernon as a great competitor in the ring and an even greater man outside of the ring," he said in an e-mail. "His philanthropic efforts in his community and his drive to help others were deeply admired," Mosley added. "My thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this very difficult time."

After taking two years off because of injuries, Forrest embarked on an impressive comeback that included a win over Ike Quartey and a victory over Carlos Baldomir for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title. Forrest defended it once, before losing it in a stunning upset to Sergio Mora in June 2008.

Those who knew Forrest praised his role in launching the Destiny's Child group homes in Atlanta, which work to provide homes for the mentally disabled. Longtime publicist Kelly Swanson called Forrest "a caring humanitarian who always stood up for what he believed to be the fairness of life."

She said working with children was "truly his calling."

"When he wasn't boxing, this was his full-time job. ... When they would see him, they would just light up, and some of them couldn't even talk. Vernon was very much involved. He'd have some of the kids over to his house on Sundays. They were part of his family."

Funeral arrangements were still being made for Forrest, who was not married and had one son.

This is the third high-profile death of a boxing champion in recent weeks.

Hall of Famer Alexis Arguello, the mayor of Managua, Nicaragua, was found dead at his home on July 1 in an apparent suicide. Two weeks ago, popular brawler Arturo Gatti was found dead in a condominium in Brazil. Gatti's wife remains the prime suspect in that case.

Brazil police: Gatti hanged himself with bag strap

Milena Saraiva, a police spokeswoman in the northeastern city of Recife, provided more information about Gatti's suicide a day after authorities reversed their stance on the case. Until Thursday, they insisted it was a homicide and the boxer's wife was tagged as the primary suspect.

"This case has been resolved. While the evidence at the scene first led us to think Gatti was murdered, the autopsy results and a detailed crime scene analysis simply pointed to a different outcome," Saraiva said.

On Thursday, a judge ordered the release of Gatti's wife, 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues, who had been held since July 12 in Recife. She and Gatti arrived with their 10-month-old son a few days before in the resort town of Porto de Galinhas, where they rented a two-level apartment.

Police ultimately concluded that Gatti hanged himself in the apartment early on July 11 from a wooden staircase column that was 7.3 feet off the ground. He stood on a stool and kicked it out from underneath him, police said. The autopsy report said Gatti was suspended for about three hours before his body fell to the floor.

Rodrigues said she was sleeping with the pair's son in an upstairs bedroom. She told police she went downstairs about 6 a.m. to get milk for the boy and saw Gatti's body on the floor, but assumed he was drunkenly sleeping. It was not until she went back downstairs at 9 a.m. that she discovered Gatti was dead and called police. Saraiva said no suicide note was found.

"The first investigators to arrive at the scene only saw his body on the floor and the bloodied strap near his body," Saraiva said. "They assumed his wife strangled him."

Saraiva said 17 witnesses told police that the pair got into a loud fight on a street near the beach in Porto de Galinhas the night before Gatti died. Saraiva said Gatti had seven cans of beer, along with two bottles of wine, over the course of dinner and partying at a bar.

Witnesses told police Gatti at one point picked up Rodrigues, who weighs about 100 pounds, by her chin with his right hand and tossed her to the ground.

Saraiva said at that point a security guard for a local hotel intervened, only to be punched in the face by Gatti. A small crowd that had gathered around the scene grew angry, with some throwing stones and even a bicycle at the boxer, the police spokeswoman said.

One stone hit Gatti in the back of the head, causing a wound that police originally said was caused by a small steak knife that was found near his body - and which police showed off to reporters the day after Gatti's death.

The fracas eventually broke up, and Gatti and Rodrigues returned to the apartment in separate taxis.

In an telephone interview with The Associated Press as she walked out of jail Thursday, Rodrigues said Gatti may have killed himself because he feared she would leave him after their fight, one of many during a rocky two-year marriage.

"I believe that when we got home and he saw that he hurt me, he thought I would leave him, that I would tell him to just let me go, that I would separate from him," she said. "He did that in a moment of weakness. He was drunk, maybe he didn't know what he was doing, maybe he thought I would leave him the next day."

According to records at the Court of Quebec's criminal and penal division, Gatti was charged on April 16 for violating a restraining order that had been filed against him. Records didn't indicate who filed the restraining order, but Gatti's mother, Ida, confirmed it was Rodrigues who had taken one out against him.

Gatti, a Canadian who captured two world titles in his 16-year pro career, retired in 2007 with a record of 40-9.

Many of his friends and family have expressed disbelief at the suicide ruling, and Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon said in a statement Friday that government officials will seek more information from Brazilian authorities on the Gatti investigation and its findings.

Ellen Haley, a spokeswoman for Main Events, the longtime promoter of Gatti's bouts, said in a statement "we do not believe that he took his own life."

She said members of the Gatti family, along with his boxing manager Pat Lynch, will carry out their own investigation. "We believe that once the results of that investigation are revealed, the truth will come to light and justice will be done," Haley said.

Miilions of dollars and Brazilian police involved? I call bullshit.

Witter is terrible. I can't stand watching this dude fight

Folks were calling him Junior Quitter after this fight...

I'm going for my "hometown" boy Campbell on this one...he is used to going against younger foes who may be favored against him (ex. Juan Diaz) but this one will be tougher because I think Bradley is more skilled in the ring than most opponents that Nate has faced.

Uh oh...not a good look...

Hopefully November 14th isn't a notable day for her :D:D:D

Damm Campbell got jobbed.:smh:

Word...The decision will be changed though...

but that verbal spar session with King and Bradley's crew was funny...

one more question, though...wasn't Nate supposed to be free from Don King? I thought he was under another promoter by now and got a release contract done between him and King

I'll be surprised if it does.

Was there a headbutt? Yes
Was there a cut? Yes
Was the fight stopped because of the cut? No

If Nate played along and said that he couldn't see because the cut, then he wouldn't need to complain about this being ruled a loss and it would've been a no-decision. Instead he's saying that he's seeing spots in the eye. That kind of rare injury probably won't be enough proof to convince the comission. But who knows. This is boxing.

:smh: Feel terrible for Campbell. They are callin him a whiner on other forums, but if you do a long ass training camp & than lose off an accidental headbutt, you'll be pissed too.

As for Junior Witter, I NEVER want to see this dude on tv again. He is terrible. Every time he steps up, that awkward bullshit he does gets shut down. Than he gets frustrated & whines

Nate said both things...before the fight was stopped, he said he couldn't see because of the cut and when Jim Grey spoke to him, Nate said he was seeing spots...It just depends on what the decision was after Nate was in his corner...
