Hmm. She has no powers and no 'suit' al la Iron Man and Ant Man. She doesn't even have a bow. I gotta agree with TimRock, I just don't see it as a two hour movie. idk, Fonz, I don't really see her origins as being all that interesting either. We've already seen that type of stuff a dozen times. How long can it take to tell that story? 20 minutes?

She's always nice to look at in that catsuit but, really, how long has she been on screen compared to the other characters? Not very long. She did work well with Cap in WS but that was still a comparatively short amount of screen time.
So, does she really need more screen? I don't think so.
I guess we'll see.

My hope is that they make this a prequel and show her back when she was a Spy for Russia...

I don't care that Jennifer Lawrence is making that Black Widow knock off called Red Sparrow.............
It looked like Agent Carter was setting that shit up for Season 3, but sadly we will never know.

Wait...really? Who thought of that? Next thing we know, the red sparrow will look JUST like the damn mocking jay she wore in hunger games.

And don't let Deadpool show up in that bish . A Wolverine/Black Widow movie would be the shit. Having all the character rights is a big deal

Marvel’s Standalone ‘Black Widow’ Movie Gains Momentum With Jac Schaeffer Writing

Marvel is finally pushing ahead with the highly anticipated “Black Widow” standalone movie starring Scarlett Johansson, with Jac Schaeffer penning the script.

Sources say this is still very early development, as the film has no greenlight, but naming a writer is the closest the studio has come to moving forward on a standalone pic. Marvel President Kevin Feige met with several candidates before tapping Schaeffer, and Marvel execs met with Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a “Black Widow” writer.

Schaeffer is an up and coming scribe who broke out with her Black List script “The Shower,” a comedy about an alien invasion during a baby shower which caught the eye of Anne Hathaway, who quickly attached herself to star in the pic.

Hathaway was so impressed with her work that she soon tapped Schaeffer to write “Nasty Women,” a new female-centric take on “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” that also stars Hathaway.

Marvel had no comment.

Fans of the character have been pushing for her to get own movie since she first appeared in “Iron Man 2” and with the latest phase of Marvel films coming to a close, Marvel saw this as the best time to move forward with the project.

Johansson has appeared as the character in six films, the next one being this summer’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Schaeffer is repped by Verve and Writ Large.

This could work VERY nicely if they give it a compelling story, lots of action, a great female villain for her to fight and some great FX's. (Along the level of Cap's fights with Bucky in The Winter Soldier or like Uma Thurman in the Kill Bill movies).
I'd LOVE to see her go solo in a film in which we get to see:

Yeah she can. There's alot to do with her too. Her early beginnings. Her training. Her current status. Falling from the hellicarrier. A spy mission gone wrong. How she may not really care for the people she saves.

Do a Bond type flick with a shit load of cameos. The feminists will eat that shit up.

Marvel’s Black Widow movie finally has a director
63
Lore’s Cate Shortland will direct the film

A film starring Scarlett Johansson’s Marvel Cinematic Universe character has been rumored for the past few years, but that rumor now seems much closer to reality. Cate Shortland (Lore, Berlin Syndrome) has signed on to direct the long-overdue film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Its confirmed that its a prequel

Earlier this year, Marvel hired screenwriter Jac Schaeffer to write the script, which is reportedly set before the events of the first Avengers film.

THR
says Marvel has met with “70 or 75 directors in order to find its ideal candidate,” and that hiring a woman to direct was a priority, with Johansson personally advocating for Shortland.

Johansson’s Black Widow was first introduced to the MCU in 2010’s Iron Man 2, and she has since appeared in The Avengers, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, andAvengers: Infinity War. She’s expected to feature in the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4 as well. But in spite of her central role in the franchise, the absence of a standalone film is glaring. Her male counterparts — Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Hulk (Edward Norton), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) — have each gotten standalone film treatments over the franchise’s 10-year history, with most of them headlining at least three films.

Marvel’s first female-led film will hit theaters next year: Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The film got a prominent tease in a post-credits scene for Avengers: Infinity War, and it just finished shooting a few days ago, so it’ll certainly beat Black Widow to screens.

Besides, there’s no release date attached to the Black Widow film yet. But with Marvel’s Phase 3 ending with Captain Marvel and Avengers 4, it’s safe to say that it’ll be part of Marvel’s Phase 4, along with Spider-Man: Far From Home, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Black Panther 2, and other projects that are currently in the works. The Phase 4 films are expected to begin hitting theaters in 2019.

Marvel is finally giving Black Widow her own movie

The studio hires a screenwriter in a long-overdue first step

One of the longest-running fan complaints in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the studio’s reluctance to give Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow her own standalone film, but now it looks like the studio is finally serious about making the project happen. Variety reportsthat the studio has hired screenwriter Jac Schaeffer to write a script for the as-of-yet untitled film.

The project is reportedly still in the development stages without a formal greenlight in place, but the fact that Marvel is even developing a Black Widow movie is significant. Johansson has been part of the larger franchise since 2010, when she appeared in Iron Man 2. But despite the prominence of her character in The Avengers and subsequent movies, she has nevertheless been relegated to supporting roles, with male heroes at the helm of Marvel’s standalone movies. That trend appeared to be changing in 2014, when Marvel announced the character Captain Marvel would be getting her own standalone film. (It opens later this year, with Brie Larson in the title role.)

The project will be Schaeffer’s first time working in the Marvel universe. She previously wrote the Disney short “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure,” as well as the upcoming Nasty Women, a female-led remake of the Steve Martin and Michael Caine comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. While it’s too early to tell if the Black Widow movie will end up in theaters, Marvel’s slate of “phase three” films currently runs through 2019, so any potential standalone Black Widow movie would likely arrive after that chapter in the cinematic universe.

Honestly, I don't want to see it.
I have nothing against the idea of a solo movie. I'm just not interested enough to pay to go see a solo Black Widow movie. Hawkeye, either.
They need to focus on getting those X-Men over to the MCU. We definitely need some Silver Surfer, too.

Black Widow' Movie Finds Director in Cate Shortland (Exclusive)

Cate Shortland
The search saw Marvel meet with over 70 potential directors.
Marvel Studios’ Black Widow stand-alone movie has its director.

Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker perhaps best known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to helm Black Widow, Marvel’s action-adventure project that will star Scarlett Johansson.

The move caps off a search that lasted over half a year as the studio met with over 70 directors in order to find its ideal candidate. A female filmmaker was the priority even as the search stalled at one point and the studio looked at male helmers.

The hunt narrowed in June with Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) being the finalists alongside Shortland. Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) were also in the next-to-final mix.

Shortland, who does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer. The actress admired Shortland’s handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that tells of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied forces roll in. Shortland's most recent film was Berlin Syndrome, a 2017 thriller that stars Teresa Palmer.

Jac Schaeffer wrote the most recent draft for Black Widow. She also wrote the upcoming female-centric remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which was formerly titled Nasty Women and is now called The Hustle.

Johansson’s Black Widow is reportedly set before the events of the first Avengers movie and sees the actress reprise the role of the Russian spy turned superheroine. The movie will be Marvel’s second female-focused film after Captain Marvel, which is set to open March 8, 2019.

Scarlett Johansson Ditches 'Rub And Tug' To Save 'Black Widow'

https%3A%2F%2Fblogs-images.forbes.com%2Fscottmendelson%2Ffiles%2F2015%2F11%2FBest-Black-Widow-as-matchmaker.jpg

We’ve had a few weeks of onlineindignation following the announcement that Scarlett Johansson would be producing and starring in a movie about Dante Tex Gill, a 1970s/1980s Pittsburgh massage parlor operator and organized crime figure who was born female but assumed the identity of a man. But as of an hour ago, Scarlett Johansson has bowed out of the project. The outcry came over the notion that Johansson would be playing a real-life character who was apparently a transgender man. After an initial statement where she (through her rep) told those opposed to be directed to “Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” the actress will no longer star in Rupert Sanders’s Rub and Tug.

Oh, and Marvel just hired Cate Shortland to direct the long-in-development solo Black Widow movie. If you think those two developments are connected, well, you’re probably right.

Even if we give Johansson the benefit of the doubt that she merely saw the true-life crime melodrama (think American Made) as a juicy role about a “tough woman” who assumed a male identity to succeed in a male-dominated arena, the outcry has been fast and furious: Tokyo drift. Speaking of Tokyo Drift, couple this with the controversy over her playing the lead in last year’s Ghost in the Shell adaptation, where she technically played a Japanese woman whose mind and soul was transported into the body of a white lady, and I imagine the actress (or those around her) decided it wasn’t worth it.

There was little chance of Johansson scoring awards consideration or even much acclaim unless the movie turned out to be a stone-cold masterpiece. Even then, the controversy would have become the prime narrative around the otherwise run-of-the-mill studio programmer which would need positive media attention to survive alongside the tentpoles. Whether it would have made any money is an open question (Dallas Buyers Club, with a huge Oscar boost, earned $55m worldwide on a $5m budget in 2013/2014), but it wasn’t worth the possibility of doing PR-related damage to the Black Widow movie.

Sure, general audiences wouldn’t have cared about (or had known much about) the Rub and Tug outcry. But it’s something that would have followed the actress on the publicity trail and may well have been a two-strikes-you’re-out scenario for the very sort of progressive/uber-woke online fans who Marvel and Walt Disney were counting on to sell the heck out of the Black Widow movie. It wouldn’t be a fatal distraction, but it’s not great when you finally make your Black Widow movie and your longtime star has essentially been (justly or not) “canceled” by the geek media at large.

So, for better or worse, even (again) giving the actress the benefit of the doubt that she really dropped out because it was the right thing to do, the comic book superhero movie took precedent over the adult-skewing crime melodrama. If more adults actually went to the movies these days to see flicks like Blow or The Infiltrator, this might be a different conversation. But even with the notion that Johansson would like to get into the year-end awards pool before she gets replaced by the next batch of hot young things (no, that’s not fair and it’s not right, but it still is), the outcry over this possible box office flop doing long-term damage to her image in the MCU wasn’t worth it.

It would be deeply ironic (and not surprising) if the film gets made with a transgender male in the lead role only to flop upon release. The internet is great at being "here for it" on social media in terms of certain movies and then ignoring them in theaters. Fair or not, movie stars still matter for movies like this. Part of the problem, I would argue, is less about Johansson getting to play a transgender person in a major movie and more about the (general) lack of opportunities for transgender actors and actresses to play characters who aren’t necessarily defined by their transgender status (and thus become “stars”). I’d argue this specific sort of casting would be less of an issue absent the utter lack of parity that exists in the industry.

So thus ends, for now, the controversy over Scarlett Johansson playing Dante “Tex” Gill in Rub and Tug. And, coincidentally, it happened just one day after Marvel made good on their promise to find a female director for the solo Black Widow movie. I’m not sure why there is a rule declaring that nearly all female-led action/superhero movies (Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Atomic Blonde, Red Sparrow, etc.) have to be period pieces and/or prequels, but that’s a conversation for another day. So to recap, Rub and Tug may die so that Black Widow may live. Even if it's the right call (and the right thing to do), it sure looks like “trading lives” to me.

Black Widow Movie Rumored To Feature Y2K Bug
1
Scarlett-Johansson-as-Black-Widow-and-Avengers-Infinity-War.jpg

The Black Widow movie may tackle the Y2K bug according to a new rumor. Scarlett Johansson's Russian spy-turned-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, is finally getting her long overdue solo film. Cate Shortland is set to direct with the script written by Jac Schaeffer. No official release date has been confirmed but many are convinced that the movie is slated to hit theaters in 2020, with production possibly beginning next May.

Not much is known regarding the film's narrative but Natasha playing a pivotal role in the famed franchise since her introduction in 2010's Iron Man 2 leaves no workable gap in the timeline that would accommodate a possible side story for her. Given that, Black Widow will be a prequel, more likely set before she was recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. and during her days as a ruthless Russian spy. That means her confirmed film doesn't necessarily mean she will survive the upcoming events of Avengers 4.

A new rumor from MCU Cosmic claims that the Y2K bug will factor into the narrative of Black Widow. Sadly, no other detail with regard to how it'll fit in Natasha's standalone movie was provided, but based on the franchise's timeline, the former Russian spy may just be around 16 years old at that time the technological crisis threatened the world and may still be with the Red Room and not with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Also known as the Year 2000 problem, the Y2K bug was a worldwide computer bug that was expected to happen at the turn of the new millennium. The anticipated problem stemmed from digital databases and programs only using the last two digits of the calendar year, meaning that by the time 2000 rolled around, it will be indistinguishable from 1900. This would've resulted in countless types of errors such as display of incorrect dates and inaccurate records for those using automated programs. The worldwide crisis resulted in governments, companies, and organizations upgrading their computer systems in anticipation of the problem. Luckily, very few computer failures were officially reported.

The rumor noted that this plot point may not exactly be what the Black Widownarrative will revolve around, that makes sense considering she's too young when Y2K happened. Perhaps it's one of the historical happenings in her life that led her to where she is when the movie picks up, or maybe the threat is related to the mission she will have in the film. Regardless, tying the story to real-life events is a pretty great idea to ground the movie and differentiate it from more fictional installments in the franchise such as Doctor strange 2, Captain Marvel and The Eternals (which has just landed a director in Chloé Zhao) - all of which are tipped to significantly shape the MCU moving forward.

Seeing Natasha, who is one of the most grounded characters in the MCU, react to real-world events is a good way to provide her with a story arc that feels appropriately her own. While she's a killer assassin and an overall badass, it sometimes felt jarring to see her fight aliens alongside other Marvel heroes who have higher power set levels than she does as it inadvertently relegates her to a supporting role. But in Black Widow, she'll finally be the starring superhero.

Director Approached For Black Widow Slams Marvel Studios Model
ADVERTISING

Lucrecia Martel, a director that was approached for the Black Widow solo movie, is now slamming Marvel Studios for the model they use for their movies. The Argentinian filmmaker is mostly known for films like The Headless Woman and The Holy Girl. She most recently directed a film called Zama, which was based on a 1956 novel written by Antonio Di Benedetto.

Scarlett Johansson had been acting for several years prior to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but today she is most recognized for her role as Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow. The spy known as Black Widow was first seen in Tales of Suspense #52 in 1964, but made her cinematic debut in Iron Man 2 in 2010. For years, people have been wanting to see a movie that revolved around Johansson's character, and fans are finally getting their wish. Marvel Studios seems to be moving forward with a Black Widow solo movie, aiming for a release date sometime in 2020. Back in April, it was revealed that Marvel was meeting with female directors for Black Widow, but now one of those directors has some unkind words to say about Marvel movies.

Related: Marvel’s Black Widow Movie Gets Cool Fan-Made Poster

First reported by The Pioneer, Martel revealed her experience with Marvel when she spoke at Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. Martel explained that while movie studios are now allowing more women to direct films, they still don't think female filmmakers should handle action sequences. Martel further explained, "Companies are interested in female filmmakers but they still think action scenes are for male directors. The first thing I asked them was maybe if they could change the special effects because there's so many laser lights... I find them horrible. Also the soundtrack of Marvel films is quite horrendous. Maybe we disagree on this but it's really hard to watch a Marvel film. It's painful to the ears to watch Marvel films". Martel finished speaking by saying that she would still be interested in making a Black Widow movie.

ADVERTISING

Besides Cate Shortland being hired as director for Black Widow, little is known about Johansson's solo movie. A Black Widow synopsis revolving around Romanoff's life after the USSR was circulating the internet for a while, but has since been proven to be for a film that had nothing to do with the MCU. Character breakdowns for casting purposes were also revealed a month ago, which allowed people to speculate on who the villain and other characters may be. It was also revealed recently that Jac Schaeffer was getting a writing crediton Captain Marvel, implying that Captain Marvel could have ties to the Black Widow solo movie.

ADVERTISING
Even though Martel had some unkind words to say about Marvel Studios and their model for films, it's reassuring that the company is finally focusing on more female superheroes, while also hiring more female directors and writers to work on projects such as Black Widow. In the past few years, women have made strides in Hollywood, a world which has been dominated by males for decades. While Hollywood no doubt still has some work to do when it comes to making opportunities equal among all genders and races, they have at least made progress in the last few years.

Black Widow Movie Recruits Mission: Impossible - Fallout Cinematographer
ADVERTISING

Mission: Impossible - Fallout cinematographer Rob Hardy has reportedly joined the crew for Marvel Studios' Black Widow. The solo movie for Scarlett Johansson is a long time coming and will be the second female-led solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film picked up significant momentum earlier this year when Jac Schaeffer was hired to write the script. After a long search, Marvel eventually named Cate Shortland to be the director, making her the first solo female director in the MCU. Black Widow has continued to come together since and is currently in the casting stage after character breakdowns made their way online. This is all leading the start of production for the movie, which could start filming next summer. With the movie firmly in the pre-production stage, the crew for the shoot is forming and just found its cinematographer.

Related: Captain Marvel Could Have Some Big Black Widow Connections

DiscussingFilm reports Mission: Impossible - Fallout cinematographer Rob Hardy will serve the same role on Black Widow. In addition to shooting this year's Tom Cruise action movie, Hardy is also responsible for crafting the shots in Alex Garland's sci-fi films Annihilation and Ex Machina. This will be Hardy's first movie with Marvel Studios.

Hardy is the second known crew member for Black Widow, after it hired a production designer back in May. Now that his addition has been reported, it may not be too long before additional crew spots are hired. Marvel occasionally likes to use people they are familiar with in various departments, but that is so far not the case with Black Widow. As the rest of the crew is revealed, what other fresh talent they recruit could be worth keeping an eye on.

ADVERTISING
As for the recruiting of Hardy specifically, it is an exciting addition to Black Widow, especially after his work on Fallout. The plot and setting of Johansson's movie have yet to be revealed, but it is sure to feature plenty of action. After the experience Hardy gained with director Christopher McQuarrie on Fallout, he can hopefully help elevate the fight scenes even more. Since Black Widow is a spy that specializes in hand to hand combat and shootouts, there shouldn't be too much in terms of CGI when it comes to the action either, so Hardy's input and execution on filming the fights should actually have a chance to shine here. But, his ability goes well beyond the action, so there's reason to believe that Black Widow will, at the very least, be a great looking movie.
