JOKER

Send in the clown !!

PRAISE:Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck / Joker is incredible. He immersed himself into the character. The moments of hope, care, sadness and insanity reflect through his eyes ,mannerisms and physical performance in a mesmerizing way. This is a character study of one of the most iconic DC villains. The other actors in the film: Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Shea Whigham, and Bill Camp do a fine job but they are mainly there to get Fleck from point A to B.
The film gave me so much to reflect on and question. If seeds of trauma are planted within a person,if this person is pushed to the edge and commits violent acts should we have empathy for this person?
I also loved how the film provoked uncomfortable laughter from not only myself but the audience i watched it with.A shiver actually went down my spine in one of the films climatic moments !!
The violence is brutal but i didnt find it to be over the top.
People will definitely compare the performances of Heath Ledger and Phoenix, but they can definitely co exist because these are two different takes on the character and both actors gave it their all.
This is a haunting film about how a system can fail people, contemporary commentary, and one of the best stories about one of the greatest villains in comic books ,film,TV,and animation.

PROBLEMS: Some turns in the story were very predictable, set up in such a way that there was no where to go but through predictable doors.
The infusion of shades of movies like The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver were a bit to blatant.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

SIDE NOTE: At the end of an article i read a writer said:Warner Brothers should release a statement saying The Joker isnt a role model.....Are you kidding me? .In his 80 year history when has The Joker ever been a role model? I need a film studio to tell me that?
The media will probably jump on an incident that happened at a theatre in which a drunk guy was cheering on in obnoxious way about the violence in the film but he was escorted out by security.
The 15 cops outside my theatre wasnt necessary.SMH !!

COLD PURSUIT

Kind of like Taken but with a HUGE sense of humor

PRAISE: Another movie i wish i had seen in theatres. What a fun movie with a plot that's supposed to be bleak as snowplow driver Nels Coxman (Liam Nesson) pursues the people that killed his son.
This very dark comedy made me laugh out loud so many times from it's footnote captions and brutal but darkly funny deaths. The banter between the characters about anything from eating healthy to being winded from fighting was so much fun to listen to .Oh and this film is absolutely beautiful to look at !!

PROBLEMS:So much greatness comes before the films climax that i was kind of dissapointed with it.It just felt so basic as if the writers gave up and ran out of interesting things to do.

Still a nice surprise !!

JBlaze - we watched Cold Pursuit yesterday. Agreed re: the visuals. That cold looked intense. Really well-shot. Turns out they filmed it in Vancouver, Alberta & Fernie, B.C. (my brother lives there). Main gripe was that one rich jerk with his security detail, and his troubled relationship with his son. Found that guy completely obnoxious and over-the-top. Like he was having a temper tantrum on scene for many of his segments. Took us out of the movie each time they would cut to him. Much preferred the scenes with all the remainder of the cast members. Unsure where they filmed his house scenes, but it looked like it may have been over in North Vancouver.

i agree plus his voice was weird because that actor is not american

Gemini Man

You're me......but you're you.....but mainly me !!

PRAISE:I was looking forward to Ang Lee's latest film and starring Will Smith, and a cool plot hey god times right?
Smith still has enough charisma to make even the weakest film watchable. In this story of a government assassin on the verge of retirement but some people feels he knows to much and decide to take him out using his younger clone.
Ok the High Frame Rate in 3D looked incredible in some scenes. There are action sequences that were fun and flawless. The story had it's moments.
Im glad Mary Elizabeth Winstead was given a lot to do.Benedict Wong had some good moments.

PROBLEMS: I cant believe how predictable this movie was.I knew what would happen 20 minutes to an hour before it came to fruition on the screen.
The de aging SFX looked incredible in the night time shots....but the daytime shots....Junior (also Smith),.....looked like he was either on the verge of sneezing or having a seizure !!
I think Director Lee got so caught up with the new technology he and the writers didnt think about forming a more compelling and deeper script.
I actually thought this film would have a better villain and the film as a whole wouldnt be so uneven.I actually laughed at the epilogue.

When this hits the DVD stands enjoy it for it's amazing 4K quality

Jexi

Remember the movie HER with Joaquin Phoenix ? well go watch it again

PRAISE:This smart phone taking over your life comedy(?) was funny for about 20 minutes.
The actors are game and there's some charm here and there especially between Adam DeVine as Phil and Alexandra Shipp as Cate they at least try to make something happen.Rose Byrne had some fun as the voice of Jexi as she spits out insults here and there.

PROBLEMS: It seems like most of the actors were told to ad lib or try to come up with something funny for 15 minutes a piece but most of it was painfully unfunny and i was looking at the floor praying the scenes would end quickly.
This would have been better as a brief Saturday Night Live sketch

Ah, there you go. That explains it! An English actor playing an American while filming in Vancouver. I knew something was off. I was half-expecting one of his own security detail to shoot him the first 5 minutes he was on camera. Contrast that with the kid playing his son. The kid was calm and level-headed ... way more natural and less forced of a character.

Thanks for the new reviews, JBlaze. I was listening to The Big Picture the other day and the host was saying one of the tricky things with the advanced level of how they shot it is that only a small number of screens in the U.S. have that technology available (or something along those lines) ...

As Ang Lee’s hyperreal new action movie Gemini Man hits theaters, Sean and Amanda look back at the long, fascinating career of rapper, sitcom star, screen legend, and Instagram icon Will Smith. They discuss the flaws and innovations of Lee’s work with 120 frames per second 3D 4K and the future of how we see movies (0:50). Then, they share their top five Will Smith performances and whether or not he will ever win an Oscar (21:33).

Host: Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins

I almost went to watch Jexi today but enjoyed my time at the gym instead. Thanks for saving me a few dollars, I was actually going to try the Mozzarella sticks today.

Saw El Camino yesterday. We enjoyed it. Like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, it was well-shot, as expected. Timelapse(d) shots and unique camera angles. Good moments of tension and faster pacing, followed by some slower moments. Good usage of flashbacks and callbacks, without overdoing it. Keeping the review vague here so as not to post spoilers. It was interesting spotting some familiar actors. BGOL fans of True Detective (season 3) and The Righteous Gemstones (season 1) will recognize a few faces. Enjoyed the scene with the recently deceased actor too. Good to see the contrasting perspective of Jesse as a broken down individual compared with one that had/regained some confidence. Like some of the podcaster reviewers have said - it was good to get more of his story considering he wasn't involved as much in the final season due to circumstance(s) with Jack's gang of lowlifes.

Zombieland 2

If you liked the first you will like this one. Its just as fun and straight to the point and the extra characters work. The comedy wasn't overbearing but could of used 10 more minutes of action. One scene felt like it was taking straight from Dead Rising.

I even snuck in 2 brats and a drink. This movie is worth the concession food.

Deleted scene at the end.

The 3D HDR was both dope and sort of annoying. It looked like a video game at times.

The young Will Smith looked like he was talking through a mask.

It was better than I thought it was going to be, because I had low expectations from the initial reviews. I was entertained watching it. :dunno:

Thanks for the review, Complex.

Netflix
The Game changers

Just got through watching this and this was very informative. I like how they show different athletes. From different sports, benefitting from a vegan diet. I would recommend watching this.

Thanks for the intel, DL. I was listening to an interview with the director recently. I believe it was on Ariel Helwani's podcast. I'll see if I can quickly locate that one and add it to this thread.

Having a bit of trouble locating the Wilks interview with Helwani. Here are some other ones though -

Since it was the same writers...It was just like Deadpool 2 to me...a whole lot of jokes...but a lot of Shaq from the free the line. It's like they were just throwing as much as they could out there hoping it would stick.

Madison was the highlight to me. She was annoying to me at first, but the longer she was on he screen the more she grew on me.

Part one was a lot better, but this one was still pretty good.

PARASITE

What a rollercoaster of emotion !!!!

PRAISE: The Kims a poor family slowly but surely grift and grafts their way into the lives of The Parks a rich family.Thats all i will say about the plot. This was one of the best misleading films i have ever had the pleasure of watching.Wonderfully acted acted by the entire cast which includes:
Song Kang-ho,Lee Sun-kyun,Cho Yeo-jeong,Choi Woo-shik,Park So-dam.
Director and writer(s)Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won have woven a story together that is filled with humor, drama, unexpected turns, commentary on social economics and the have and have nots of the world.Stunning visuals along with an engrossing plot kept me full engaged for the films 2 hour plus running time.

PROBLEMS:Some minor predictable moments.

Scale of 1-10 a 9

Zombieland: Double Tap

If you really need that break from The Walking Dead

PRAISE: Well the quartet of Zombie butt kickers are back
Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone); and Wichita’s younger sister, Little Rock (Abagail Breslin).
Though they are starting to chafe and long for something different.
The visuals ,pop culture references, and fourth wall breaks keep the movie interesting and fun.
We are introduced to knew characters mainly the ditzy Madison (Zoey Deutch),and sexy and tough
Elvis-lover Nevada (Rosario Dawson)
Also some zombie kills are quite fun.

PROBLEM:There are plenty of predictable turns. Some characters are not really given that much to do and when they are given something to do it doesnt really go anywhere so it feels like character filler.
Some bits go on far to long.

This was a fast watch and i had fun for the most part definitely not as great as the first film though

stick around for the mid credits

Scale of 1-10 a 7½
