Holy Spider.

Movie based on the true story of an Iranian serial killer who tried to rid Iran of corrupt woman--i.e., drug using prostitutes. He would pick woman up on his motorcycle, take them back to his home, then strangle them. He felt he was doing God's work.

That he was doing God's work was his defense at trial. He had a lot of supporters that felt the same, and wanted him released. His trial actually became political.

Although the movie had subtitles, it was really good. It's a typical serial killer movie, but the fact it happened in Iran made it really interesting to me. I'd grade it a B- .

Reptile

Cold Blooded

PRAISE: Reptile is an involving and haunting slow burn. The murder of a realtor slowly but surely turns into much more as Benicio Del Toro's Detective Tom Nichols tries to put two and two together. Del Toro is excellent in the movie. Definitely channeling Charles Bronson and Robert Mitchum.
It was great to see him team up with Alicia Silverstone again 26 years after their last film together Excess Baggage . They have great chemistry together as a quiet but loving couple in the film.
The cast including - Judy Nichols · Justin Timberlake - Will Grady and Eric Bogosian turn in very good performances.
Director Grant Singer knows how to raise tension and suspense in key scenes especially in one scene in which the sound completely vanishes, its mainly in the dark and there's such an ominous feel to it its nearly overwhelming. Music plays a big part of the film not only for the well known songs, but the feeling of dread it gave me as one scene blends to the next.

PROBLEMS: The red herrings in the film are to on the nose. So much so I could immediately eliminate characters as suspects. 15 minutes definitely could have been shaved off the movie.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7½

Heist 88

Hindered Heist

PRAISE: Loosely based with a capital L on a real 1988 bank robbery that was planned by Armand Moore. It's the performances and some good moments of suspense that make this film watchable. The talent is definitely there Courtney B. Vance,Keith David and Keesha Sharp are all equally great.
There are moments of truth in the screenplay about societal issues that are still in place 35 years later. Another reason the film held my interest for some time because it focuses on the banking industry of which I was a part of for several years and how it was forever changing especially funds transfer becoming computerized which actually made it easier to steal. No phone calls and multiple confirmations that are featured in the movie, just a few codes and key strokes.

PROBLEMS: Definitely clichéd at times. Some odd and clunky scenes
The ending is so abrupt I had to do a Google search to find out what really happened in 1988. I found out the producers and creators of this film didn't even bother to consult Moore they just put together what they wanted mainly leaving out interesting facts about how things really played out in 1988 which would have made this movie so much better.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 6½

4/10

This is one of those old school, grindhouse blaxploitation flicks.

The acting in it sucks, there are a number of familiar D-List actors from the 50s thru 70s who may be noticeable to you.

It has a pretty decent motorcycle chase scene at the beginning, they basically sped up the film in post-editing.

The story is basic, but does have a little unexpected twist at the end.

tubi has the original unmastered copy so it’s grainy with piss poor sound quality. It does add to the griminess of the film. tubi has the film labeled as what I have above, it originally was titled “Black Angels”

Synopsis

Members of a white motorcycle gang declare war on their black counterparts after discovering they were duped.

Checked out The Equalizer 3 and The Sandlot in recent days.

Thought that Equalizer was pretty good on the whole. They didn't suspend your disbelief with Denzel's performance as a man in his late-60s. Especially recovering from a serious injury as he was early on in the story. The shooting locations were good, though limited. Kind of wished to see more of the city / surrounding regions. Some of the scene settings felt repetitive after awhile. Didn't care for Dakota Fanning's role. Although she's just shy of 30yo, she seemed younger and her soft-spoken nature and demeanor didn't really work for me given the seriousness and gravity of the environment.

Rewatched The Sandlot. I saw it in the theater as a teen some 30 years ago, and never got around to rewatching it in full over the decades. Just a few minutes here and there when it was on TV, or in Youtube clips. Really liked the rewatch. Funny moments and story. Good narration - similar to what worked well in Stand By Me from the '80s. Great soundtrack as well.

Fear the Night

Fear this Fumble

PRAISE: The poster for this new action flick starring Maggie Q popped up on the Showtime app and I said why not I like Maggie and action.
The story is about a bunch of ladies having a Bachelorette party in the middle of nowhere and some sinister dudes descend upon them.
I was genuinely shocked by a few kills once this movie gets going about 36 minutes in and like I said I like Maggie so it was fun watching her do her thing. A couple of brutal moments and some salty dialogue held my interest for awhile. Some good unintentional laughs.

PROBLEMS: I couldn't decide which characters were worse the bad guys or the women who were constantly bickering and complaining even when outright murder was happening all around them. The reactions to death seemed to be shrugged off by most of the characters. The dialogue is awful and then some. I was awaiting a big payoff scene that was over within seconds. The movie is only 90 minutes but it felt twice the length.

The Boogeyman
2023

5/10

Watched this last night on Hulu.

Nothing spectacular with the plot, it’s been done a number of times since the 1980s. I believe a Boogeyman movie came out in the 80s, not sure if this is a reboot.

Nothing to call scary in the film. The Boogeyman was not impressive when it debuted.

It’s a 2hr flick that could have had 30 minutes chopped off easily.

Watch only if you a hardcore horror fan.

Atomic Attack
1950

7.5/10

This is an early Cold War PSA film shown on TV back in the 1950s.

It popped up in my tubi recommendations and looked interesting. I went into it not expecting nothing but it actually played out better than I thought.

It’s only 50 minutes long and SHTF around the 3 minute mark.

The actor’s reaction to what is happening is actually believable. I was expecting it to be bubblegum nonsense, but the film showed a somewhat actual portrayal of people’s reactions to a Nuclear attack.

Because of early TV censorship, they were held back on violence, but what they showed was done well and got the point across.

The comedy is seeing people walk into the house clearly shown with moisture on their clothing as we were told there was nuclear fallout.

It’s an interesting film. It also shows the importance of having a battery operated radio along with a car radio. They are currently debating removing car radios/AM radios out of cars.

It’s currently on YouTube as I posted it below.

Synopsis

A family living 50 miles away try to flee from the fallout of an atomic bomb that fell on New York City.

The Tank
2023

4.5/10

I watched this one this afternoon on Hulu.

Nothing spectacular with the plot. It’s been done numbers of time for the past 30+ years.

The movie has the usual jump scares along with creature visuals you are accustomed to.

The creature oddly resembles the 4 legged creatures in “Stranger Things”.

For the InCells, the last 15 minutes you may find offensive and disturbing.

If you a hardcore horror fan and need to Watch anything horror, you will enjoy it.

There is a post-credit scene setting it up for future sequels.

Synopsis

After inheriting his mother's abandoned coastal property, Ben and his family accidentally unleash an ancient, long-dormant creature that terrorized the entire region -- including his own ancestors -- for generations.
