Watched this last night on Hulu.

Not much to say being the premise has been done a large number of times since the 2000’s.

Nothing really for suspense.

For the Thirsty, the lead actress looks like she could be Gwen Stefani’s twin.

They somewhat left it off for a sequel, if they do a sequel it would be interesting on how they do it.

Synopsis

As a serial killer stalks the city, a young actress who just moved to town with her boyfriend notices a mysterious stranger watching her from across the street.

I reviewed the prequel “Sister Demon” earlier and watched this last night.

I was gonna watch it a few years ago, but being it is with sub-titles (The film is from Spain), I had decided to skip it. So since I watched the prequel I decided to give it a shot.

The sub-titles doesn’t take away from the film. Dialogue between the characters is paced slowly.

The first hour is a slow burn with character introduction/development and the usual paranormal stuff of doors closing and bad nightmares.

The 2nd hour kicks into more suspense and action. Some new information is given on the Entity but it seems they left some out for a potential sequel that hopefully will inform us of the Entity’s agenda.

If you are a hardcore supernatural film lover, you should enjoy this.

Synopsis

During a solar eclipse, a teenage girl and her friends want to summon the spirit of the girl's father using an Ouija board. However, during the session she loses consciousness and soon it becomes clear that evil demons have arrived.

Yeah - I caught the movie a few months back. It had its moments with the comedic situations. Recognized a few of the shooting locations in and around the GVRD (Greater Vancouver Regional District). Same for the series Upload (watched season 3 recently) - had some recognizable Vancouver sights.

There's some sets / production studio(s) just near the Burnaby - Vancouver border. Some TV has been filmed there, etc. Anyway ... the place we re-up our First Aid / CPR for work at is right near there. I was telling my dad about the location and he told me about some calls in the area, and also stopping in at the studio years back working for the fire dept (he retired just before 60).

Fine to Fail

PRAISE : After figuring out who the characters were and related to I got into the groove of this movie about Two brothers from opposite sides of the tracks are reunited as adults. Desperate circumstances force them into a deal with an organized crime syndicate in Boston, and a young women gets caught in the middle.
There were a couple of characters I immediately started rooting for and they were portrayed by Toby Wallace as Charlie and Jenna Ortega as Mabel.
There was the usual family angst about living up to one's potential, dissapointing family members and the father and son turmoil which I was ok with. Ben Foster does well as Charlie's brother Tom. It's always great to have the presence of Tommy Lee Jones around and it was nice to see Lolita Davidovich and Tim Daly in a project again. The life of a deep sea fisherman is nicely displayed from the longing for the sea to how dangerous it can be.I was glad I was spared from something crazy I thought was really going to happen.

PROBLEMS: The movie becomes very clichéd almost immediately as the crime part of the film begins. The grit in the film starts to lose its edge. Then things start to become far to convenient and easy for certain characters. I actually started laughing at one character who was a complete pushover.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 6

Watched it earlier this week with pops. Thought it was pretty good, but like you said the crime thriller portion of the movie was too cliched. It felt rushed seeing as it kicked in about 2/3 the way in.

The fishing portion was definitely well done. They made scallop fishing exciting, which was a nice surprise.

Solid role for Tommy Lee Jones.

Jenna Ortega's role felt out of place. Too generally sweet & petite to take seriously as a badass.

We recommended it to my dad's GF as she has Paramount+ at home. She checked it out and liked it ... she appreciated the father-son elements of the movie.

BSG and the Stargate shows i bet

Yes, I think so.

A number of car commercials are filmed on Vancouver bridges, including some along the Georgia Viaduct (which is where the crash scene / shootout from Deadpool took place).

We often laugh when big bridge scenes are filmed and movies try and pass it off as NYC or Los Angeles, but sometimes fuck up and you can see our local mountains in the background.

Which movie did YOU personally LIKE that everyone else HATED?
Killers of The Flower Moon
I think if people watched a couple of documentaries about the core plot of the movie they would understand it more
I kept hearing why did the Indian people just accept and embrace the white people that became their money managers, and women
completely become head over heals for white men. It was what they were told over and over again in the schools ,by nuns and ministers....WE KNOW BETTER THAN ALL OF YOU,FORGET YOUR OLD WAYS. Imagine being told that from a pre teen until your 20's and 30's.
This was even brought out in the show 1923

What are 3 films that most surprised you that under performed? Films that when you saw them yourself you were surprised they didn't find an audience or were big successes?

I really only have one...

How the hell Mission Impossible flop???

And sidebar...why did NO ONE NOTICE???

every other franchise that had a flop this year got KILLED but no really did that here?
Everything has changed with the theatre experience . Even though films like Barbie and Oppenheimer make tons of money, other films have a short time in the theatre these days. If it's not continuously making cash in 4 to 6 weeks it's either on a streaming service or available for download .
Perfect example IF TRUE Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on Netflix, January 1, 2024. It's a why bother situation why put up with going to a theatre, paying for food that grows more pricey every other month or dealing with someone talking or doing some other annoying thing while the movie plays. So im not shocked at films under performing these days. A lot of films still need HUGE HYPE.

Anatomy of a Fall

Anatomy Acclaim

PRAISE: Director and writer Justine Triet and writer Arthur Harari have not only presented a very watchable and involving court room drama but also the story of a breakdown of a marriage and a family. The story about a woman being suspected of her husband's murder, and their blind son being the only witness is an entertaining one and then some. Great performances from the entire cast including Sandra Hüller as Sandra Voyter Swann Arlaud as Maître Vincent Renzi , Milo Machado Graner as Daniel and Samuel Theis as Samuel. The layers are pulled back on the couples dysfunction and resentment which leads to where it all started and the foundation of guilt and frustration it was built on . I thought all of the aforementioned was so well done displaying a lot of raw emotion and realistic themes of a couple that slowly but surely had reached their breaking points with each other. There are perfectly directed scenes one standout being an argument that keeps slowly boiling to the point of boiling over but Triet chooses to pull back on the visuals of the boil over making the scene even more powerful. I liked that certain things were nodded to but not fully told because it made the movie and the characters even more interesting. Sometimes marriages and relationships reach that annoying to obnoxious level of just knowing how to get under each other's skin and I thought that was amazingly displayed. The film is beautifully shot I always love looking at distant snow capped mountains.
This is definitely one of the best films of 2023.

PROBLEMS : I thought that some of the court room scenes felt drawn out. So much so I started to pick them apart and question if some of it was truly necessary.

Godzilla
1954

7/10

There are two versions of this film, the original Japanese version that I watched last night. And the American version with Raymond Burr edited into the film for its American debut.

I have seen the Raymond Burr version a number of times but never the Japanese version and watched the original yesterday at home. It’s a totally different film and actually plays out better with the story.

Godzilla is not in the film that much, the film mainly is focused on the Japanese people and their response to Godzilla. Being the film is in Black and White, the VFX/SFX plays out well.

The film is full of recognizable Japanese actors from the 1950’s Japanese Samurai films that came out.

I saw the film when I recorded it from TCM had a Godzilla Marathon New Years Day. They showed it with subtitles.

Synopsis

Underwater hydrogen bomb testing awakens a fire-breathing monster from its centuries-long sleep, and it soon starts to terrorise Japan.

I watched this film on tubi.

I have been on a binge over the past year/half going thru my future ex-wife Melanie Lynskey’s films that she is in.

I haven’t really posted reviews on them cuz I don’t think you cats would be interested, majority of her projects are geared for a predominantly White audience.

What made me post a review while watching this yesterday was while watching it, I kept thinking I had already seen the film, but when I looked thru my notes there was no record of it and my cable box didn’t show that I had watched it.

By the time I hit the mid-point, it struck me why it was familiar. They basically took a Black movie script and flipped it for a majority White audience. The premise and the the plot of this film has been done a zillion times since the early 90’s in Black cinema and Hood films.

It made me wonder how many original Black film plots out there are being sampled. Nobody has noticed cuz Black folks don’t normally watch White dramas. Also this film has won a number of Independent Film awards.

No need to go into the story being you cats are familiar with it. But it’s really humorous when you watch it when you see the similarities.

Synopsis

A 26-year-old parolee must deal with his criminal boss and an enigmatic detective as he tries to find his way back into society and win back his ex-girlfriend.

American Fiction

Fiction & Facts

PRAISE : A couple of months ago my sister and I were talking about how bad the writing was on a sitcom that I barely watched and that her boyfriend was into so she watched along with him. We came up with the conclusion that some of the writers were just biding their time and putting up with the other writers because it was a stepping stone to something better or they just needed the money so they just made up anything to cater to a certain audience.
That's partially what American Fiction is about, the story about A novelist Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright)
who's fed up with the establishment profiting from "Black" entertainment uses a pen name to write a book that will show up anyone that publishes it.
The movie definitely reflects what many have gone weary of as of late the profit off of black pain in cinema. Black people being put into a box and the aggravation of it. As Monk states in the film books and entertainment like this say ok this is all there is of the African American experience.
I think the film does a fine job with all of the aforementioned. But I was happy that's not all this film is about. It's also about family and familial dysfunction.
Sterling K. Brown gives a good performance as Monk’s younger, reckless, and gay brother. As Lisa Tracee Ellis Ross, her screen time, is shockingly brief but she provides a heartfelt and fun performance. As Coraline, Erika Alexander Monks girlfriend is that nice loving and supportive surprise in someone's life and I think she handles the role beautifully. As his mom, Agnes (Leslie Uggams gives a quiet but believable performance as a person in decline. There are also good turns from John Ortiz as Monks agent and as Lorraine the families live in home caretaker Myra Lucretia Taylor provides a sweet performance. Th moments between the family felt genuine and real.
The message of stereotyping is strong as it plays out in dramatic and humorous ways. The question of selling out because that's what is selling is always and interesting one, which takes me back to the beginning of my review. Can someone profit from the stereotypes, and black trauma to provide for family and themselves and not feel guilty about it?

PROBLEMS: Some predictable moments.
I wish the conversation between Monk and Sintara Golden (Issa Rae), a Black author with a middle-class upbringing whose novel centers on inner city Black women because their conflicting views were interesting. Although I found some of the closing moments humorous it did have that feel of well we don't really know how to end this. Plus there was that there and back again feeling with Monk that can either be chalked up to "catering to or selling out" and not really having a voice of your own.
