The Happytime Murders

Former police partners Detective Connie Edwards (Melissa McCarthy) and Phil Philips, (voiced by Bill Barretta) now a private investigator investigate a series of puppet murders and non stop laughs and sight gags...uhmm are supposed to ensue....

PRAISE: The whole private investigator noir vibe the film has for awhile. Some really unique raunchy moments.Good voice work. Some laugh out loud moments..Some great puppetry, which really looked outstanding in some scenes.
Director Brian Henson and writer Todd Berger are able to weave in a strong message about discrimination.

PROBLEMS: An 82 minute film shouldnt feel like a 182 minute film !!
It runs out of steam halfway through.I like most of the actors in the movie, but there was some really lazy delivery of dialogue, and some absolutely painfully unfunny scenes.
I was expecting so much more and was so let down at how such a good build up gradually became a dull experience in it's second half.
Stick around during the credits.

KIN

Is the movie KIN that perfect blend of family drama and sci fi?....well.....

PRAISE:
The whole estranged family ,gruff but loving dad Dennis Quaid as Hal Solinski,a seemingly hard case fresh out of prison son Jack Reynor as Jimmy Solinski, and the longing to fit in 14 year old adopted son Myles Truitt as Elijah Solinski was actually working for me.
Even James Franco as the villain Taylor Balik who's crazed villainy and look was a cross between a character from the Vikings TV show, and Robert Deniro circa Cape Fear worked for awhile, and last but not least Zoë Kravitz as Milly a stripper with a heart of gold adds some spark here and there.Well acted by the entire cast.
I enjoyed the pulsating score by MOGWAI.The SFX were outstanding and nearly flawless.

PROBLEMS:
This movie reaches levels of absurdity and ridiculousness that i havent seen on the big screen in awhile.Characters made decision that made me say,are they really going to do this?
But even with those extremely high levels of absurdity i was still holding on to the sci fi part of the film, that still had some mystery to it.
Then we get a ...surprise...cameo....twist and well......
There's something that happens in the last 15 minutes of the movie that should have been in the middle and maybe made some of the turns in the film easier to get on board with.

I think this would have worked better as a starting point to a NETFLIX or CW series.

Searching was better than I thought it was going to be. They did a nice job pulling off the gimmick. The ending is corny as hell though.

Papillon, Jax Teller's best acting roll. Good buddy movie.

Alpha, entertaining, slow in spots and sort of predictable, but still good. It took a long time for me to even realize it was a subtitle movie....which means it wasn't work at all

Mile 22...sucked...damn it sucked

8th Grade...pretty dope under the radar movie. Shouldn't have been rated R

The Meg...entertaining, but not enough carnage. Should have been R

Listened to this interview a few days ago. It's from The Big Picture (part of The Ringer podcast network, or on Channel 33 via ITunes, Soundcloud, etc). The host always does a good job of letting the guests speak. Knows how to get out of the way of the conversation & not make it question-heavy ... interesting to hear how it took awhile to get John Cho on board at the beginning ...

Operation Finale

In 1960 a group of Nazi hunters attempt to capture and debrief Adolf Eichmann (Ben Kingsley)to try and ultimately bring him to justice for his crimes.

PRAISE: I remember reading an article about the children of high ranking Nazi officers and how they recalled them saying for the most part about their involvement in the extermination of what most historians estimate the total number of deaths to be 11 million people ,was that they were just doing their duty....job....for their country.
Eichman brlliantly portrayed by Ben Kingsley says this several times, and each time is more sickening than the last, absolutely showing how mesmerizing Kingsley's performance is.
High praise also to Oscar Isaac as Peter Malkin an Israeli secret agent, and member of the Mossad intelligence agency.
He has several key and almost overwhelmingly intense scenes with Kingsley,as they both try to one up each other with mind games.
In fact their scenes together work so well i began to wonder if this could have also worked as a two man stage play.
The job of the Mossad was to get Eichmann to do certain things that i wont reveal here but it plays out so well in the film because the group desperately try not to humanize him, they try not to make a connection and i thought it was wonderfully written and displayed.
I never felt like i was being manipulated by the film when it goes for some suspenseful moments that may not be factual.
There were much needed lighter moments that i appreciated.
It was nice to see several actors i havent seen in awhile in the film which included Peter Strauss and Greta Scacchi.

PROBLEMS:There were a couple of times when the music didnt match up to the serious themes of the film, also a few visuals didnt sit well with me because i felt this was definitely not the type of film for them.More for a movie like Mission Impossible or Fast & the Furious.

In the end i was moved and highly entertained by another piece of history that was given it's due in a respectful way.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

PEPPERMINT

After her husband and child are murdered by a drug cartel, and the justice system fails her Riley North(Jennifer Garner) plots her own course for revenge and justice

PRAISE:Jennifer Garner is incredible as North.Showing raw emotion & toughness as a loving mother who becomes an avenging angel.
I love a good revenge flick, and when you add some originality...even better !!
There was a good bait and switch with a couple of characters that i didnt see coming.
Good one liners, action sequences, and kills...and ohhh boy those head shots !!

PROBLEMS : predictable moments, some cookie cutter henchmen.I could have done without the jump cuts. Some characters were given big introductions but nothing really happened with them.
It borrowed a bit from the Batman legend....but maybe that belongs in the praise portion...ha ha

In the end this was everything the Death Wish remake should have been !!

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

WHITE BOY RICK

It's 1984 the just say no to drugs era but Richard Wershe Jr. AKA WHITE BOY RICK is hoping everyone says yes !!

PRAISE : Really outstanding performances from the entire cast with the standouts being : Matthew McConaughey as Richard Wershe Sr. a buy low sell high gun seller,Bel Powley as his strung out daughter Dawn Wershe and Richie Merritt in hi s first role ever as Richard Wershe Jr.

Director Yann Demange and writers Andy Weiss,Logan Miller and Noah Miller paint a vivid portrait of the era with stylish moments filled with music and a gritty feel.
They also flesh out how life can lead you to take certain steps that paint you into a corner for the rest of your life. The flash and pleasure of fast cash through illegal means and the violence and pain that goes hand in hand with it are prominently displayed in the film..Also the struggle of trying to keep a family together despite impossible odds is shown in several moving scenes.

PROBLEMS: The film meanders a bit,but then quickly jumps around making the film feel a bit disjointed.
There are some parts of the true story that were only slightly touched on in the film,i would have liked to have seen it play out in a greater way.

WHITE BOY RICK is one of those true stories that definitely flew under my radar but im glad i had the pleasure of watching the story on the big screen

Scale of 1-10 an 8

WHERE HANDS TOUCH

A unique film about the Afro-German persecution during WWII,told through the eyes 16-year-old Leyna (Amandla Stenberg) lonely and alienated, she meets and falls for Lutz (George MacKay), the son of an SS officer (Christopher Eccleston)

PRAISE : I saw the trailer for this movie 3 days before i saw it in the theatre and was very interested because i dont think i have ever heard of a film about an African Americans experience in a concentration camp. There have been documentaries about the persecution of non jews in such camps, like PURPLE TRIANGLES:Jehovahs Witnesses, but nothing like this.
I thought the cast did a fine job.SStenberg is a very expressive actress capturing all the lonelines and longing of the character. She and MacKay have great chemistrty together.
Some scenes of brutality and racism definitely struck an emotional chord in me.

PROBLEMS: At times some scenes felt forced.I felt they just didnt ring true and the writers were just pushing for huge emotional moments, with so much melodrama,it took me out of the film. There are other routes they could have taken to have made this more of a solid and satisfying experience.

This is the second film i have watched within a week with a backdrop of the Nazi persecution.Operation Finale is a superior film but Where Hands Touch deserves praise for taking on a not much talked about chapter of the era.

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

A Boy. A Girl. A Dream

Club promoter Cass (Omari Hardwick) meetsby passer-by Frida aka Free (Meagan Good) sparks fly but is this love a t first sight?

PRAISE :Hardwick and Good have great chemistry. The film is beautifully shot.I thought it was an excellent choice to use 2016 U.S. presidential election as a backdrop to the story of two people who have put their dreams on the back burner but are able to ignite the flames of their creative sides as they share their life stories with each other throughout the night.

PROBLEMS: Far to many ponderous, stiff and drawn out moments,so many i started to check the clock on my cellphone.10 to 15 minutes definitely could have been shaved off

If you like movies like Before Sunrise,Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and Cross My Heart you will definitely enjoy this film

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

PREDATOR

Yay the Predator is back and i couldnt wai....ahh who am i kidding it's time to put this franchise to bed

PRAISE: Some great SFX.Some funny one liners, some good kills, fast paced. The bigger Predator providing some cool body slams.

PROBLEMS:I really couldnt attach myself to any of the characters they were amusing at first but their antics ran out of steam fast.I guess i was supposed to accept the choices they made because i think 4 or 5 of them were mentally unstable or something(????)
Plot holes bigger than the Grand Canyon.I should have known what i was in store for when even the Predator got in on the antics...i mean...WTF?
I like some blended in humor in an action or sci fi flick but everything about this movie was a joke.
By the time the last 20 minutes were playing out i was so bored i was more interested in why a family of 5 kept getting out of their seats and leaving the theatre about 4 times.Maybe something more interesting was going on in the lobby.

One of the silliest sci fi films ever !! Wastes the talents of all involved. The only way i think this can be enjoyed if you go in thinking this is a comedy

SHANE BLACK WHAT HAPPENED????

Scale of 1-10 a 3

No Problem.
But Honestly,
I don't do movies much except if it's IMAX, Dolby Cinema or any of the other Specialty Large-Format theaters for something epic.
Shit like Dramas, Comedies, Horror, etc I wait for home viewing.

Agreed. Big screen for me ... or streaming stuff via flash drive. Same for TV series on networks we don't have ... checking them out once the BGOL reviews/feedback come in.

Bleach_%282018_film%29_poster.jpg

enjoyable in a made for tv kind of way

I wouldnt go out of my way to watch it again
but if it was on i wouldnt change the channel
6/10

I did go watch the Predator. Started off good, then quickly went the SyFY B-movie route where you watch for the kills. Then serious with Sterling Brown then back to B-movie. The last 20 min, I'm not sure what happened I zoned out. Started thinking if my grass is dry enough to cut. Will I watch part 2, yes, only if i still have A-list.

MANDY

After his quiet life with his beloved Mandy is destroyed by a sadistic cult,Red Miller seeks revenge and oh what an odyssey it is......

PRAISE: Sure Nicolas Cage has been making a a lot of B and C flicks lately, but in Mandy he shows why he is still one of the best actors around. This is a complete dedication to a role, completely immersing himself in a character.

Andrea Riseborough is great as the title character with her huge expressive eyes and quiet, aloof but loving manner.
I didnt even recognize Linus Roache as the insane and sadistic cult leader......wow
Great cameo by Bill Duke
This movie has all the great ingredients of a revenge flick but blend in an acid trip, that married a few issues of Heavy Metal !!
Director Panos Cosmatos paints an amazing iterpretation of what goes on in the minds eye and subconciousness after a harrowing experience all blended with mesmerizing visuals and symbolism.
I loved how this film can be interpreted in so many ways.
The late great Johann Johannson once again composed a score that fits perfectly with the dread and exhilirating moments happening on the screen.
Be warned this film is ultra violent at times and the gore is not for the faint of heart.

PROBLEMS: Over the top campiness around the edges, and a few drawn out moments

I should have had a few beers while watching this,i know it would have enhanced the experience.
I think the last time i drank or got high while watching a movie was years ago when i was watching Natural Born Killers.I've been told i was running around the house screaming : It's not real !! IT'S NOT REAL !! ....ahh the good old days

Watched Sicario 2 yesterday. We enjoyed it. If you enjoyed the 1st, you'll probably dig the second. Held our attention throughout ... the ominous, brooding music always sets the tone. Especially with the calm before the storm scenes when you know shit is about to get hectic. The 2 Sicario movies do a good job with tension as well ... some movies it comes across as more forced or over the top ... whereas in these ones it feels heightened, but rightfully so.

THIS was the BEST Horror film I've seen in years.
Finally saw this last weekend.
I'm still sleeping with a light on...

Weird ass movie, got good reviews, but I was not crazy about it. I was a little tired from fucking, so I might not have paid attention to all the detail.

I start watching again from the halfway point.

A STAR IS BORN

A famous country rock musician Bradley Cooper as Jackson Maine, and a looking for her big break, extremely talented singer and songwriter Lady Gaga as Ally attempt to have a relationship and make beautiful music together

PRAISE: I knew going in that Gaga would knock it out of the park with her musical performances. How this woman is able to channel some Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand into her performance was mesmerizing.
It's Cooper who is the musical revelation in the film.He soulfully performs with an on stage swagger as if he's been singing and performing at stadiums for years.
I have so much admiration for his Direction of this film. The chemistry between the two is off the charts.
Cooper gives the weathered by life performance as a man dealing with personal demon's and physical ailments while trying to maintain a loving relationship
Their scenes together are electric, powerful and soul stirring.
Gaga is a revelation with her acting giving as much as Cooper can or any other actor in the film
The supporting cast is absolutely outstanding:Andrew Dice Clay,Dave Chappelle,Sam Elliott and Anthony Ramos.

PROBLEMS: Some old hat been there done that moments about losing your soul in the music industry.

This film will likely receive a ton of award nominations and it's deserving of all of them
One of the best movies of 2018

Scale of 1-10 a 9

VENOM

So can Venom work as a stand alone character and movie without a hint or whisper of Spider-Man?

PRAISE:The Jekyll and Hyde back and forth between Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom.
The character design and some of the SFX and voice work. Some good action sequences and some laughs here and there

PROBLEMS: Even going in with extremely low expectations,i left the theatre disappointed.
What was with all the slapstick? The script is schizophrenic, with additional memory lapses. The delivery of lines was extremely grating and terrible.
Michelle Williams talents....wasted.Riz Ahmed cookie cutter cliched villain.
To many quirky moments reminded me of some of those lame comedies from the 80's
One action sequence goes on for painfully to long.
The film is just all over the place.
I hope SONY doesnt go forward with Black Cat or Kraven the Hunter
At least they still have Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse up their sleeves.

Scale of 1-10 a 3½

Thanks for the A Star is Born and Venom update, JBlaze.

Been listening to the reviews from movie critics on podcasts ... definitely a strong buzz for A Star ...

BEAUTIFUL BOY

How can a father rescue his teenage son from the abyss of drug addiction when he doesnt want to be rescued?

PRAISE : As father and son Steve Carell as David Sheff and Timothée Chalamet as Nic Sheff are equally outstanding in this sometimes harrowing and numbing film.
David is the loving father who is watching his son decent into a world of addiction but does his best to try to alter his course. It's gripping to watch because both actors really sink their teeth into their roles, that are filled with frustration and raw emotion
Im glad i didnt read the true story before watching the film, because it made the film more effective.
When or should you stop holding the hand of your child who doesnt seem to care that he has become a shadow of himself? When do you stop letting yourself be fooled by your child, who lies right to your face, and addiction begins to effect the lives of your other children?
There's also great supportive work from Maura Tierney as Karen Barbour and Amy Ryan as Vicki Sheff

PROBLEMS : The film jumps around a lot in it's first 40 minutes,so much so it took a few minutes to figure out if i was watching Nic in his semi sober stage ,or selling all of his possessions for his next fix stage.

This film is a strong and sobering look at addiction. Carrell and Chalamet will likely receive numerous and deserving award nominations.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

FIRST MAN

If you can make a film about a well known part of history suspenseful and exciting ..im all in !!!

PRAISE: Ryan Gosling turns in an embodied performance as Neil Armstrong, the astronaut who became the first man to walk on the Moon during Apollo 11.
He displays Armstrongs no nonsense manner to a T.
A whos who of great character actors turn in fine performances including: Corey Stoll ,Pablo Schreiber ,Jason Clarke
Kyle Chandler,Christopher Abbott ,Patrick Fugit and Lukas Haas.
If you ever wanted to know what it feels like to be in a space capsule, rocket,or simulator here's your chance. The film effectively put's the audience in the seat of all of the aforementioned.
There were some facts presented about Armstrong that i didnt know so i appreciated the inclusion of those facts.
The SFX are nearly flawless couple with great cinematography.
Director Damien Chazelle aptures the fell of the era, with effective moments about the disenchantment with NASA which came from the government and the citizens.

PROBLEMS: There was a bit of a disconnect with some dramatic moments. While some were developed in an effective way, others were only touched on.Something ultra tragic would happen, some brief sadness, and boom on to the next scene or period in time.
For me the flight, training and space scenes outweighed the dramatic ones here and there.

FIRST MAN still deserves to be seen in the biggest theatre with the best sound system

Scale of 1-10 an 8

Bad Times at the El Royale

Seven strangers arrive at the El Royale a shady hotel on the California-Nevada border of course nothing about them is simple or normal

PRAISE : The entire cast does a great job,but the stand outs IMO were:Jeff Bridges as Father Daniel Flynn, Cynthia Erivo as Darlene Sweet, a struggling singer and Lewis Pullman as Miles Miller, a young concierge at the hotel
The film has a slow start but i believe this was purposely done to lull the audience into something seemingly safe and then bang there's an explosion of violence, like a lightning bolt to the senses.
Each character has an interesting back story ,and all come together with involving banter.
One of the highlights of the film is how it throws off the audience about how certain things will play out by using the characters in a ambiguous way.
There are shades of Tarantino throughout but suspense is woven in to give the film some unique moments.
I cant say much more or i will spoil the film.

PROBLEMS: Some predictable turns, and meandering moments. The film focuses on one character for so long it actually became laughable to me and i started to wonder why some of it wasnt cut because this movie really didnt need to be 2 hours and 20 minutes

This was a fun romp that provides enough suspense, twists and turns to put a big smile on my face

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

KINKY

A movie about a couple having kinky sex that's actually worse than Fifty Shades and Trois

PRAISE: Theres not much to review here.Dawn Richard as Dr. Joyce Carmichael gets a rich guy to have kinky sex with her.
Dawn Richard looks great in lingerie,i laughed a few times. This was fun to watch with a crowd.

PROBLEMS: To many moments in which there is no dialogue but just characters glaring at each other.Terrible acting and silly moments.
and the ending.....are you kidding me?!?
