The Electric State

PRAISE: Everytime i watch a movie like this i wonder what the creators of movies like Short Circuit and Batteries Not Included think of the technological advancements featured. One of the best things about this movie is the look and tech. The movie is about An orphaned teen hits the road with a mysterious robot to find her long-lost brother.
The performances in the movie are fine for the most part. I truly admire the work that went into really capturing the mood and look of the book on which the movie is based. Aside from the paychecks for the stars of the film
Millie Bobby Brown as Michelle, Chris Pratt as Keats,Woody Harrelson as Mr. Peanut (voice),Ke Huy Quan as Dr. Amherst, Giancarlo Esposito as Colonel Bradbury and Stanley Tucci as Ethan Skate and the various cameos i fortunately saw where the 300 million dollars went into this movie. There were threads in the plot that kept me interested to a point especially the exploration of the world in this movie. There are a lot of appealing and charming moments from the robots that appear in the movie .There are scenes that I thought would have looked great in IMAX.Even the blended in moments of nostalgia worked for me. Definitely strong moments of one losing themselves in alternate, computer generated realities instead of dealing with the real world rang true.

PROBLEMS: The characters are basic with Chris Pratt basically portraying a Star Lord type again.Unfortunately this is one of the movies in which I reached the 90 minute mark and couldn't believe there was still 30 minutes to go because at that point it became very repetitive. Then it becomes a slog especially when i knew how it was going to end. The interactions between characters was in wash, rinse, repeat mode.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. I - Director’s Cut
2013

6.5/10

I have been sitting on this film for over a year and started watching it at home last week on the free streaming app, XUMO Play. I finished it last night on the road.

It is an erotic art film. The film has hardcore, explicit sex scenes like a XXX porno, that actually show Oral, Vaginal and Anal penetration. There are scenes showing male ejaculate into a woman’s mouth.

The film is divided into 4 chapters. Being it’s the extended directors cut, it’s a 2.5hr film. Normal film time is just under 2 hours. I do not know what is part of the extra scenes.

It’s a somewhat slow burn film at a number of points, but quickly picks up once the sex gets going. There are a few non-sex scenes that stand out.

For the Pervs, the film has a number of fully depicted sex scenes. All scenes all heterosexual between one man/woman.

For the Gay Agenda trackers, there are numerous scenes showing full frontal male nudity. One scene showing a man making himself erect with his hand. Full depictions of male erections are shown. Actor Shia LaBeouf has a full blown XXX sex.

If you are comfortable in your sexuality and enjoy odd content, you willl find this film interesting.

I looked into it after watching, the director had noticed the film was too long and cut it into two parts. XUMO Play has both parts and I believe they have the regular versions. Free streaming apps PlutoTV and Plex also have the films. FYI, the free streaming apps have the film’s overloaded with commercial breaks. It’s why it took me so long to watch it.

I will get to Part 2…at some point:16:

Synopsis

Navajo Joe(1966) - Burt Reynolds gets revenge on the killers of his tribe.

Taffin(1988) - Pierce Brosnan stars in a 1980's version of a Jason Statham movie. Everybody should love "Lola The Stripper."

It kind of reminded me of "In The Land Of Saints & Sinners."

Mickey 17

PRAISE: As soon as I watched the trailer for this movie i couldn't help but think about the 1973 movie Sleeper. In fact Mickey Barnes 17 ,Robert Pattinson sounds like Woody Allen even though he has stated he is giving an impression of someone else. The movie is about a man being Cloned multiple times to explore an ice planet which leads to much more.
Pattison does a great job as the multiple Mickeys once again showing off his range. I thought Naomi Ackie was good as Nasha a security agent who falls for the Mickeys which leads to some interesting turns. I thought the visuals were fun and creative. There's some charming moments and encounters as the ice planet is explored further especially when it comes to the inhabitants and the plight they are in.Some of Director Bong Joon Ho's talents definitely shine through.

PROBLEMS: The couple portrayed by Mark Ruffalo playing a my way or the highway or else leader and Toni Collette are about as obnoxious as the couple portrayed by Richard E Grant and Sandra Bernhard in Hudson Hawk. When you make a film or TV series about Clones you can't escape becoming repetitive in the narrative. The same questions are asked with characters trying to pull off sinister acts over and over again. The flow of the films narrative definitely felt disjointed. The movie changes lanes near the end I couldn't help but think: ok we are doing this now....hmm ok just as I was thinking 15 minutes could have been cut from the movie. Then the movie becomes even more drawn out with a scene that could have been summed up much faster and a tacked on scene that was really unnecessary.

Venom
2018

6.5/10

The last time I saw this flick was when it was released in theaters back in 2018. A 3rd film came out last year and it just recently debuted on Netflix. I was gonna watch it, but I completely forgot what happened in the first two, so I decided to rewatch the first two starting with this one.

I had started watching it last week at home, but fell asleep halfway thru and forgot about it until this morning while at home. I finished watching it this morning at home in Disney+.

I’m not gonna go into it, but the film gives the origin of Venom arriving on Earth. The film does not follow the comics origin I’m familiar with when I was reading the books back in the 80s with how Spiderman got possession of the symbiotic suit during “Secret Wars”. I haven’t read comics since the early 1990s, so I have no clue on what SONY was doing with this franchise and if it had anything to do with what’s currently going in the books.

The VFX/SFX look good with Venom. Action was done well to keep you looking at the screen. The story flowed well keeping you interested from start to finish.

It’s a decent and entertaining film.

There is a mid-credit scene introducing Woody Harrelson/Carnage. There is a post-credit scene introducing “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse“.

I will get to the 2nd Venom film…..at some point.

Synopsis

Journalist Eddie Brock is trying to take down Carlton Drake, the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake's experiments, Eddie's body merges with the alien Venom -- leaving him with superhuman strength and power. Twisted, dark and fueled by rage, Venom tries to control the new and dangerous abilities that Eddie finds so intoxicating.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep
2025

6/10

This film debuted last month on Netflix and I watched it this afternoon at home.

It’s a spin-off series from Netflix’s flagship series “The Witcher”. I looked it up and it takes place during season 1, between episodes 5 and 6.

The film is focused on the war between Humans and Merpeople.

It proceeds at a good pace with enough action to keep you interested. It’s not a slo-burn like the regular series.

Some characters from the regular series cameo and new characters are introduced.

Overall, it’s an entertaining movie. It plays out as a stand alone, but does connect to the other Witcher content mainly to expand the universe.

Synopsis

Hired to investigate seaside village attacks, mutant monster hunter Geralt unravels an age-old conflict between humans and sea people that threatens war between kingdoms.

Man hell no. He is too old, doesn't have the looks or physique for that.

Damn one of my favorite actors from back in the day..R.I.P Ramrod

Didn't know he was the guy from Yellowstone's dad.

Tyler Perrys Duplicity

Sometimes I give Tyler Perry a capital T for trying to make twisty thrillers like Double Indemnity. This story about a High-powered attorney named Marley who pursues a case personally when a friend is involved in a police shooting was interesting for about 35 to 40 minutes as it establishes a host of characters and when there is more than meets the eye when it comes to the aforementioned shooting. The movie is shot well. There was still hope at least a decent message about social issues would be present. Then it just becomes ultra predictable and red herrings that don't amount to much feel like filler.I did get some great unintentional laughs out of the sinister acts committed, characters and actors over doing it when it came to their outrage and lingering gazes which were dead giveaways to their true intentions. Oh the kills were visually cheesy and funny. Then I was just basically waiting for it to end and I completely zoned out during the closing words of the movie.
