There's no one correct way... Someone could define Mt. Rushmore as strictly measuring greatness and put both up there. Or neither...

Like you, I think Russell would be more of a Rodman type today. If I were looking at it in terms of straight greatness or dominance, I'd definitely have Shaq over Russell. But I just give Russell a nod because he is the embodiment of winning with the NBA's greatest dynasty in the quaint, inferior era he played in. And I have to have Chamberlain up there for greatest relative dominance of one's peer group. Even though I'm sure Shaq would own him head on.

So it's all subjective.

Wilt- Goes without saying. Not even a question. Not his fault he was so much better and more physically gifted than ANYONE else in the NBA. If he could shoot free-throws he'd have averaged 65 pts a game. No one in the history of ANY sport has been as superior to ANY OTHER PLAYER in their sport when they played. Not even Jordan. Probably one of the top 10 greatest ATHLETIC SPECIMENS of ALL TIME in ANY SPORT.

Russell- Rings speak for themselves. 22 reb a game. Will shut you down defensively, including Wilt. Got in Wilt's head constantly....who was Jordan in the league before there was a Jordan. Think about it...who else in the HISTORY of the NBA ever did that to a league's "best" player. No one. No question.

Kareem- Leading scorer in NBA history. 6 rings. No question. If you're under 40, your memories of Kareem are largely the bald, older, skyhook shooting Kareem. Muthafucka was a beast his first 12 years in the league. Look at the old footage. Never, EVER, got the respect he deserved as one of the top 4 players EVER. Mainly because he refused to suck-off any CAC, and they punished him for it...still do. One of the smartest players to ever play the game. Fucker is a genius.

Shaq- 4 rings. Unmatched size and strength during his tenure. Unstoppable during his prime in his position. Name another player besides Wilt and Jordan who were UNSTOPPABLE offensively at their respective positions. Shaq could only be stopped by...Shaq...and perhaps Kobe. Ego and work ethic kept him from 7-8 rings.

Honorable mention- Dream. Shaq couldn't really fuck with him...Embarrassed Robinson....and Ewing. Besides Wilt...most athletic center ever. Centers didn't consistently have "highlight reel" moves before The Dream. Just can't put him in front of Shaq. But imagine Kobe and Hakeem on the same squad with Dream's maturity and work ethic. Shiiiieeeiiitt. 8 rings easy. Well, not with Jordan around.

Shaq had no post moves at all. All he did was push people around. He would have fouled out every time he played agInst someone with FUNDAMENTALS!
