EXCLUSIVE: The long-awaited sequel to the classic comedy franchise is a go as sources tell Deadline that Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined series star Eddie Murphy in Netflix’s newly titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Production on the sequel is underway with Mark Molloy directing. Murphy is back as Axel Foley and will produce along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Will Beall penned the script.
The franchise moved from Paramount to Netflix in the winter of 2019 and follows the adventures of Detroit cop Foley, who first appeared in the 1984 smash hit that followed him to Beverly Hills to solve the murder of a friend. The film became one of the year’s biggest hits and solidified Murphy’s movie-star status. It was followed by two sequels, in 1987 and 1994.

Charisse Hewitt-Webster and Ray Angelic will exec produce the new movie. Melissa Reid of Jerry Bruckheimer Films will co-produce.

Gordon-Levitt has been busy going all the way back to the pandemic when he had multiple pics bow including the popular Netflix actioner Project Power and the Oscar-nominated The Trial of the Chicago 7. Over the past year, Gordon-Levitt has stayed busy on both the TV and film fronts, starting with the Showtime series Super Pumped, where he played Uber founder Travis Kalanick. Next up, he will voice Jiminy Cricket in Disney’s Pinocchio. He also recently wrapped production on the drama Providence opposite Lily James.
Following her breakout role in the A24 pic Zola, Paige has been a star in demand and already has had a busy 2022. She was most recently seen the Lena Dunham pic Sharp Stick, which premiered at Sundance, and Mack & Rita, and has several films in post including The Toxic Avenger reboot with Peter Dinklage.
Gordon-Levitt is repped by WME and Jackoway Tyerman Werthheimer, and Paige by CAA, Entertainment 360 and Granderson Des Rochers. Murphy is repped by WME and ML Management; Molloy is represented by UTA; Beall is represented by UTA, Darin Friedman at Entertainment 360 and McKuin Frankel Whitehead LLP; and Angelic is represented by UTA.

Let me guess. Taylour Paige is Axel’s daughter and she’s a cop who’s inherited her dad’s loudmouth attitude and quickfire wit and now she’s the one experiencing the fish out of water scenario dealing with Beverly Hills folks on a case. But instead of fresh new jokes, we’ll get the old ones recycled just like Coming to America 2 did. So now it’ll be Axel’s daughter pretending to be drunk in a strip club, accusing a hotel of racism, and saying Get the F outta here.
Her dad pops up every few scenes to remind us why we’re watching, but, as we’ll get reminded multiple times, she doesn’t need his help and can solve the case by herself.
Rosewood, Taggart and Bogermill turn up in the final scene for fan service. Roll credits with Stir It Up by Patti Labelle for nostalgia.
Cash money this is what we’ll get.

I have absolutely NO FAITH in this.
Revisiting the past is a tricky business and sadly, Eddie's last venture in that arena was a failure.
I mean; sure, every now and again we get a couple of really great and fantastic big wins:

Original Beverly Hills Cop stars Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot are set to report for duty in the upcoming Netflix sequel.
Reinhold and co. will reunite with Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, named after Murphy's Detroit cop. Reinhold and Ashton portrayed detective Detective Billy Rosewood and Sgt. Taggart, respectively, in the original franchise, Foley's sidekick cops. Reiser played Jeffrey Friedman, Foley's cop partner in Detroit, while Pinchot art gallery salesman Serge.
The original 1984 action comedy followed Murphy's fish-out-of-water police officer as he heads to Beverly Hills to pursue an investigation. The box office hit yielded two more sequels, 1987's Beverly Hills Cop II and 1994's Beverly Hills Cop III. Plot details for the fourth iteration have been kept under wraps, but it will presumably follow the beloved Foley as he investigates more crimes.

The cast also includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige. Mark Molloy will direct the sequel featuring a screenplay from Will Beall. Along with headlining the film, Murphy will produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, Chad Oman, and Melissa Reid. Charisse Hewitt-Webster and Ray Angelic will executive produce. The film, which doesn't have a release date yet, is currently in production.
Murphy has said in past interviews that a solid script was a high priority for any potential sequel. "I'm not doing a Beverly Hills Cop unless they have a really incredible script," he told Rolling Stone in 2015. "I've read a couple things that look like they can make some paper. But I'm not doing a sh---y movie just to make some paper. The s‑‑‑ got to be right."

Okay after seeing the trailer my interest is highly peaked.

What makes a good action movie is how good the villain is at being menacing. There needs to be a good balance of presence and tension between the protagonist vs antagonist whether seen or unseen. That relationship dynamic is what carries an action film. Case in point, even though Bruce Willis was the star of die hard, that movie wouldn't be the classic that it is today without Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber).
