Reports: San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors closing in on Kawhi Leonard trade
From NBA Twitter and media reports
Jul 18, 2018 4:43 AM ET

The Kawhi Leonard saga could finally be nearing its long-anticipated conclusion. According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports and ESPN's Chris Haynes and Adrian Wojnarowski, the Toronto Raptors are engaged in serious talks with the San Antonio Spurs to acquire the two-time All-Star and former NBA Finals MVP. The details of the trade are still being worked out, but would center on Leonard and Raptors All-Star DeMar DeRozan. Here's more from Charania on the parameters of the trade, which is still in discussion:The San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors are engaged in serious talks on a trade centered around Kawhi Leonard and DeMar DeRozan, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Talks between the Spurs and Raptors have intensified in recent days, league sources said. The potential deal would bring Leonard, one of the NBA’s top players when healthy, to Toronto and send an All-NBA and All-Star caliber player in DeRozan to the Spurs. For key figures involved in the deal, it is believed only a snag in final discussions could prevent completion, league sources said From the moment Leonard made clear his desire for a trade out of San Antonio, the Spurs have taken a patient, deliberate approach to finding a resolution. Several teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers, emerged as suitors, but most NBA executives believed the Raptors presented the best potential current and future package. Leonard is scheduled to enter free agency in 2019 and has no intention to commit to Toronto long-term, league sources said. DeRozan also has expressed displeasure toward a possible move, becoming aware of the possibility late Tuesday night, league sources said.Wojnarowski and Haynes report that the deal is close to being finalized and could happen as soon as sometime later today:An agreement in principle could be reached as soon as Wednesday, league sources said. Leonard and DeRozan are both aware that an agreement could be imminent, and neither is expressing enthusiasm for the deal, league sources said. Toronto and San Antonio have been talking about the trade for two weeks, and several incarnations of packages have been discussed, league sources said. Sources close to DeRozan told ESPN that DeRozan met with Toronto brass in Las Vegas during summer league and was told he would not be traded.Yahoo Sports' Jordan Schultz reports (via Twitter) that the Raptors are hesitant to include young swingman OG Agunoby in any possible Leonard-DeRozan swaps.
As word of the trade circulated the NBA social media atmosphere early this morning, DeRozan took to Instagram and posted a story there that read: "Be told one thing & the outcome another. Ain't no loyalty in this game. Sell you out for a quick bit of nothing ... Soon you'll understand ... Don't disturb."

DeRozan has spent his entire career with the Raptors (2010-18), emerging as one of the top guards in the Eastern Conference. Since making his first of his four career All-Star berths in 2013-14, DeRozan has averaged 23.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in that span. Last season, he averaged 23.4 ppg while improving a key facet of his game by hitting a career-high 89 3-pointers. He has three years and and $83 million left on his contract, including an Early Termination Option for the 2020-21 season.
Will the Spurs deal Kawhi Leonard before the start of the 2018-19 season?
Leonard's future has been a subject of league-wide fascination ever since it was first reported he wanted to leave the only team for which he has played. Despite attempts by the Spurs -- including a try by coach Gregg Popovich -- to mend the relationship, Leonard and his camp have steadfastly maintained their distance as the offseason has worn on. The strainbetween Leonard and San Antonio built throughout the 2017-18 campaign as the former 15th overall pick dealt with a quad injury that kept him from playing in all but nine games. The unusual recovery time was compounded by his physical separation from the team, as Leonard continued his rehab in New York. His absence was especially notable during the Spurs' first-round playoff exit to the Golden State Warriors. Leonard was then spotted at a Los Angeles Dodgers home game three weeks later. The Raptors went through a series of changes in the offseason after they were swept in the Eastern Conference semifnials by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Coach Dwane Casey -- the NBA's Coach of the Year -- was fired days after that playoff exit and was eventually replaced by Raptors assistant coach Nick Nurse. Shortly after Casey's firing, Raptors GM Masai Ujiri said roster changes could be afoot for the team. But, he was quick to point out the timetable for those changes were hardly known at that point. "It is something we’re looking at ... not saying this roster is perfect," Ujiri said then. "Things we need to do and I need to do to get better. Roster changes is not something I can change today. Sometimes [it takes] takes 2 months, sometimes a year, sometimes two years.”
An offseason of change was afoot for Toronto after its playoff exit.
Los Angeles has long been reported as Leonard's preferred destination in the event San Antonio decides to trade him. Talks between the teams have reportedly taken place on more than one occasion, but have yet to gain enough momentum for completion. The news that Leonard might be Toronto-bound accompanies a recent ESPN report that the seven-year forward is considering participating in USA Basketball's minicamp next week. Popovich is the coach of the senior team that will play in the FIBA World Cup in 2019. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I'll take Melo on the Sixers at the MLE and make the Kawhi trade for a year rental dont give up more than two first. If you give up two first they must take back Bayless contract.
Even without Leonard I would still take Melo as that go to shooter down the stretch. No one on the Sixers have a midrange game it's either drive or three. Melo gives us that Veteran player that wont be scared to take the game winner.

I heard on local radio...

ATL is about to trade Dennis Shroeder for Carmelo, then buy out Melo's contract so he can go to whatever team he wants.

That's interesting. They must not have any interest from any teams. They were so high on Shroeder and got rid of Teague.

His contract isn't that bad at only 15 mil. I think he can be a good sixth man, but I don't think he's a good starting PG

IMO a team like Orlando should go after him.

Dennis wore out his welcome in Atlanta.

He has a pending felony case, missed team activities because he supposedly misplaced his wallet while home in Germany, and said on a foreign interview that he wants to be traded to the Pacers. The coach who believed in him is now the Bucks new coach and I guess he wants no part of our rebuilding efforts.

ATL would save about 20 mil by getting rid of him and buying Melo out.

Lakers just signed Michael Beasley to a 1 year deal.

As y'all know I've been talking the Melo/Lakers combo strongly for the pass few months.

This could be a big time move, like this could in my eye have the close to the fire power as getting Melo. Just not the name/star power.

Magic have added mainly player who can create for themselves(McGee don't but ain't a problem)

Guess the Heat didn't sign Mike cause they want to get Melo

Celtics’ Smart ‘ecstatic’ to have summer in limbo over
Associated PressJul 20, 2018, 11:00 PM EDT

BOSTON (AP) — There was a moment during the past month in which Marcus Smart wasn’t sure where he’d be playing basketball this upcoming season.

A day after signing a four-year deal to remain in the only NBA jersey he’s ever played in, Smart said he’s focused on doing what he can to help the Celtics win their 18th championship.

“I’m ecstatic. This is a blessing,” Smart said Friday.

After being in limbo since the start of free agency, Smart cemented his pact with the Celtics on Thursday. A person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press that Smart will be paid $52 million over the next four years. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team did not disclose the terms of the contract.

Boston brings back a 6-foot-4 defensive cornerstone who has developed a reputation for toughness and doing the little things that help the Celtics win. Smart is also the longest-tenured player on the roster.

The confidence that general manager Danny Ainge is showing in his abilities is not lost on Smart, who acknowledged he knew he was entering a tough free agent market this summer.

“To be honest, I didn’t know where I was gonna end up. I was just enjoying this whole process,” he said. “It is a business, so things aren’t perfect. That’s why it’s called negotiations. You guys come together and you finally agree on something. We both agreed. Boston loves me and I love Boston. Boston wants me here and I want to be here. I am here. So we made it work.”

Barring any late changes, Smart’s return also means Boston will be bringing back the core of the team that won 55 games and reached the Eastern Conference finals while battling numerous injuries and being without both Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward the entire postseason.

Smart was a huge part of the run, stepping in to a starter’s role after returning from thumb surgery late in the first round of the playoffs. He averaged 9.8 points, 5.3 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game as Boston pushed LeBron James‘ Cleveland Cavaliers to seven games in the conference finals.

Now, James is in the West with the Lakers, and given the emergence of youngsters Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, Smart said he doesn’t see any reason why the Celtics shouldn’t be a favorite to come out of the East.

“We demonstrated the talent and ability we had to do that last year with a few missing pieces. With those missing pieces back in action, I think it really makes it hard for teams,” Smart said. “I think we have a real shot.”

The signing also will allow Smart to shift his attention back to his mother, 63-year-old Camellia Smart, who continues to undergo treatment for the bone marrow cancer she was diagnosed with in April.

“When you kind of go through adversity and something like this hits you and your family, it kind of puts everything in perspective and everything else kind of becomes a blur to you and really not that important,” he said.

He has been with her in Texas since the season ended and said she’s stable and doing well.

“She’s hanging in there,” Smart said. “This is a hard time. But at the same time, it’s an exciting time for my family. So, with the signing, it kind of brings a little joy to a situation and lightens up the situation that was a little darkened for me. … As of right now, she’s doing great.”

As far as basketball is concerned, he’ll continue trying to improve.

“I’m just gonna be working on all aspects of my game. The uniqueness about me is I don’t do one thing perfectly or great. I do a little bit of everything. That’s what makes me so unique. I’m just trying to master a little bit of everything. … If I could just get better a little bit each year, then I did my job.”

Kings reach reported agreement with Nemanja Bjelica for three-years $20.5M

The Kings have now swooped in on two different players in a week
3h ago
When it comes to the Kings teams better start worrying about them stealing their players, because Sacramento has now swooped in on two reported agreements in the same week. On the same day Sacramento reached an agreement with Yogi Ferrell, after he had reached an agreement with the Mavericks, they have also reached a reported agreement with Nemanja Bjelica.

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, the Kings reached an agreement with Bjelica on a three-year 20.5 million deal. The third year is reportedly non-guaranteed. Earlier in the week, it was announced that Bjelica was not going to sign a one-year deal he had agreed to with the 76ers. His intention was to stay in Europe, but clearly plans have changed.

The reported $20.5M is a lot of money for a wing that, at times, is a little too hesitant to fire away. Bjelica is a good 3-point shooter, but he had issues in Minnesota last season where he just wouldn't play aggressively enough. Maybe the Kings will be able to convince him to more freely fire away from deep.

View Profile
It's impressive that Sacramento was able to steal Bjelica away from Philadelphia and Europe. Obviously a lot of money was necessary to do it, but the Kings are in a situation where they need to overpay players to sign free agents. That may change in the future if they can start winning some games.

Pistons’ Casey: Griffin still a ‘top echelon’ player

July 20, 2018

Blake-Griffin.jpg

Dwane Casey admits he’s heard it, but doesn’t believe it.

Is Blake Griffin still a top player in the NBA, one who is locked in for $142.3 million over the next four seasons with the Detroit Pistons?

“There are questions around the league, whether he’s going the other way, and I don’t anticipate that whatsoever,” Casey, the Pistons’ new head coach, moved over from Toronto, told Michael Pina of Vice Sports. “I don’t see anything but him being in the top echelon, whether it’s top-10, top-15 players. I would say that he’s in that group.”

Casey, fired by the Raptors after last season, when he led them to a franchise-record 59 regular-season victories and the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, said Griffin was a big reason why be accepted the Pistons’ job.

“Other than (owner) Tom Gores selling his vision and what he sees for the Detroit Pistons…that was a selling point, to know that your owner is that invested in it,” Casey told Pina. “But then two was Blake Griffin. His intelligence and the people doubting whether he’s going the other way or whatever, knowing that he had a lot more left in the tank. That was very exciting to have.”

When Griffin was traded by the Los Angeles Clippers to the Pistons in January, Detroit was in the middle of an eight-game skid. Starting the season fresh should be a benefit to both him and the Pistons.

“My goal for him is to be the best passing power forward in the league, which he can do,” Casey said. “People look at Draymond Green, they look at all these other guys — point fives and point fours.

“Blake can be a prototypical point four because he’s very intelligent, he has great passing skills. What’d he average last year? 6.5 assists per game with the Pistons? There are a lot of ways to measure success beyond just points, and Blake has the ability to do that.”

Casey understands one of the biggest issues with how Griffin performs will be if he can actually play. He has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, including last season. While with the Clippers, he missed 14 games because of a sore left knee and about a month later, he sustained a concussion. Finally, he missed the last eight games of the season because of a bruised ankle.

“Health has to be our friend,” Casey said.

Griffin, heading toward his ninth NBA season, has Casey looking forward to the 2018-19 campaign.

“I’m excited, recharged, rejuvenated and all the other adjectives you want to say because of Blake and the rest of the group that we have,” he said.

The Yogi Ferrell situation is funny. He reneged on the deal and went and got almost a million more from Sacramento.

They have Fox and Mason, so Mason might be getting less time this year
