The Anthony Davis trade saga certainly engulfed headlines last year and casted a dark cloud above the New Orleans Pelicans franchise for almost the entire 2018-19 season
The drama finally ended over the summer, when the disgruntled superstar got his wish and was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a massive deal.
In the latest episode of ESPN’s Mason and Ireland Podcast, NBA Insider Ramona Shelburne shared some interesting and rather controversial details about AD’s ugly exit from NOLA.
Apart from the complexities behind trading a franchise superstar, the veteran reporter suggested that there were racial overtones that factored in the incident.
“I believe there’s a racial component to all this. That a black agent telling, not asking, a team that they should trade him [AD] did not go over well. Especially in the South.. Aaron Mintz did the same thing with Paul George & it wasn’t as bad.”
Shelburne, of course, was talking about Davis’ African-American agent Rich Paul, whose straightforward approach might have not gone well with some of the franchise higher-ups from the South.
She hinted that those factors may have been the cause of why the team initially refused to grant the Klutch Sports Group’s request for a trade.
Davis, meanwhile, will make his return to the team that drafted him first overall in 2012.The Lakers will take on the Pelicans at the Smoothie King Arena on Wednesday, in what promises to be an emotionally-charged event.
Given the circumstances of his departure, Davis will likely received a somewhat hostile reception in New Orleans, which may even rival that of his teammate’s LeBron James the first time he played a game as a visitor against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Ramona Shelburne, a senior writer at ESPN, issued an apology on Wednesday for comments she made on Tuesday suggesting that the backlash towards Anthony Davis and his trade request last season was due to racism and New Orleans being in the South.
ESPN's public relations department emailed the statement to The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate.
"Since my appearance on LA radio Tuesday, I've spoken to many people and now realize that I inappropriately oversimplified a very complicated and emotional situation," Shelburne said in the statement. "I sincerely apologize for that mistake and to the city of New Orleans."
Shelburne, who is based in Los Angeles for ESPN.com, said in the radio appearance that the booing Davis received last season was due to race and the region of the country he was playing in.
“Part of the reason why New Orleans didn’t want to trade him for so long is because they couldn’t get fair value for him,” Shelburne said on ESPN LA’s Mason & Ireland show. “But I think the idea that a black agent was telling, not asking, telling the team, ‘You should trade him,’ and he wasn’t gonna, that did not go over well in New Orleans. Especially with, I don’t want to say, ‘That fan base,’ but you’re down in the South, man. This was very charged. And I think that when things get ugly emotionally like that, it’s not just about what’s going on on the court. It’s not just about the moves being made.”
Davis, who played seven seasons with the Pelicans, will play in New Orleans for the first time since the trade on Wednesday night when the Pelicans host the Los Angeles Lakers at the Smoothie King Center.

We got it together late and FINALLY, Brett Brown got shit right and had Joel bang down low to finish off the Kings. Our formula for winning is simple yet we make shit hard trying to play this bullshit ass modern day NBA where everybody has to jack up 3's en shit.
But see that's the bullshit that doesn't work in April and May. You can't play like shit for 3 quarters and just hope to turn it on in the 4th. Not against the elite teams. The Kings are definitely trending in the right direction but on paper we should have had this game in the bag from early on. But having Joel consistently on the perimeter isn't working.
And I'm putting a lot of that on Brett Brown and Simmons. After that historic bad night Joel had the other day, the whole game plan should have been getting him the ball at his spot down low on the left block. No 3s at all. Like, "Joel get to your spot early and often and we just going to keep feeding you until you're in rhythm and putting them in with ease."
Modern day NBA is fun to watch but the classics are classic are a reason. If you have a big man who can't be stopped down low. Then put his big ass down low and let that man work.
