Welterweight boxer Ed Brown, 25, dies from gunshot wound to head
9:23 PM ET

Dan RafaelESPN Senior Writer

Chicago welterweight Ed Brown, a fast-rising 25-year-old prospect, died on Sunday, one day after being shot in the head, manager Cameron Dunkin confirmed to ESPN.

"He lost his life at 25 years old for nothing." Dunkin said. "Those people in Chicago shoot you for no reason. It'd be different if he was out there gang banging or running around or dealing drugs. He wasn't doing any of those things. He was such a quiet kid. He was so bashful. You'd never know how tough he was in the ring talking to him outside the ring."

Brown and a 19-year-old woman, whom Dunkin said was Brown's cousin, were sitting in a parked car at about 1 a.m. in Chicago's East Garfield Park neighborhood when another car pulled up, and someone inside the car shot at them, Chicago police said, according to ABC News 7 in Chicago. Brown was shot multiple times and the woman, who is in good condition, was shot in the leg.

Brown (20-0, 16 KOs), who was a standout amateur, turned pro in December 2012 but was exceptionally busy after signing with Dunkin in 2015, when he fought 13 times. Brown most recently fought Nov. 11 in Philadelphia, where he notched a lopsided eight-round decision victory.

Brown had been shot twice previously. Dunkin said he was a hard worker with tremendous potential.

"He had a lot of ability, and everybody who was around him who worked with him was amazed how good he was," Dunkin said. "When I got him a little over a year-and-half ago, I was very excited to sign him. He was ready to go fast and we were moving him fast. Everybody in boxing who knew him liked Ed Brown. All the guys at the gym loved him.

"He was so excited about being 20-0 and so excited about being so close to breaking through. He was excited about what he was going to do. He believed and I believed he was going to be a world champion. It's just such a shame, just such a waste of a life."

Dunkin said he had implored Brown, whose mother was one of the 21 victims who died in the 2003 E2 nightclub stampede in Chicago, many times to move away from the city. Dunkin said he told Brown he was willing to help pay his way to relocate to Las Vegas, where Dunkin lives and where there are many boxing gyms and outstanding sparring.

"I told him he had to get out of Chicago. I begged him to get out of Chicago," Dunkin said. "And every time I had him ready to go, (trainer) George (Hernandez) would call me and say he's not going to leave. It's sad they can't leave that environment."

Miguel Cotto to end 15-month layoff Feb. 25 in Texas vs. James Kirkland
9:07 PM ET

Dan RafaelESPN Senior Writer

Miguel Cotto, Puerto Rico's only four-division world champion, will end a 15-month layoff by taking on James Kirkland in a junior middleweight fight on Feb. 25, Cotto Promotions executive Bryan Perez told ESPN on Wednesday.

The scheduled 12-round bout will headline an HBO PPV card being put on by Roc Nation Sports and Cotto Promotions and will take place at the Ford Center at The Star, the new training facility of the Dallas Cowboys in Frisco, Texas, that includes a 12,000-seat arena.

Perez said the fight has been agreed to and expected a formal announcement by Roc Nation Sports as soon as Thursday.

"Miguel is back in the ring and we are all excited," Perez said. "Like he always does, Miguel wants to go in the ring and put on a great show."

Long one of boxing's biggest stars, Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs), 36, has won world titles at junior welterweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight, but he has not boxed since losing a wide unanimous decision and the middleweight title to Canelo Alvarez in their November 2015 megafight in Las Vegas.

The fight with Kirkland is the last one on Cotto's promotional contract with Roc Nation Sports and is being pursued as a pay-per-view event because the company owes Cotto at least $10 million for the fight. It almost surely will lose considerable money given that there is no public demand for the bout; Cotto is coming off a loss, has not fought since 2015, and Kirkland is a marginal opponent coming off a 21-month layoff and a crushing defeat.

Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs), a 32-year-old southpaw from Austin, Texas, has fought just three times since 2011 and has not been in the ring since May 2015, when Alvarez brutally knocked him unconscious in the third round.

"We tried to do other fights, but you know how the business is," Perez said. "Kirkland was there, he was willing to fight Miguel, he makes good fights and we made the fight. Miguel will do his best to give a great show and an exciting fight."

Perez said Cotto would begin training camp with trainer Freddie Roach at his Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California, in early January.

"Miguel can't wait to start training with Freddie," Perez said. "I think the year off was good for Miguel, but he is ready to fight again."

Cotto has typically fought in New York, where there is a big and supportive Puerto Rican community, or Las Vegas. He has boxed only twice in Texas, in the first two fights of his professional career in early 2001. But Perez said the new Cowboys facility is ideal for a fight and that they are looking forward to doing the card there.

"It's a beautiful place," Perez said. "We're excited to be the first big sports event there other than football."

Although the deal is not complete, the co-feature of the card likely will be junior featherweight titleholder Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KOs), 36, a Miami-based Cuban defector and two-time Olympic gold medalist, making a mandatory defense against interim titlist Moises Flores (25-0, 17 KOs), 30, of Mexico. Roc Nation, Rigondeaux's promoter, is close to a deal with the Flores camp.

Wlad came into ring after the fight so they could officially announce the fight at Wembly April 29th 2017. King Kong and Joseph Parker were both top 10 HWs that won tonight as well. The HW division may be the best in boxing right now
