Alvarez-Golovkin fight generated 1.3 million pay-per-view buys

The Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin middleweight title fight produced 1.3 million pay-per-view buys, the best showing between two world champion boxers since Floyd Mayweather’s record-setting 2015 triumph over Manny Pacquiao.

The figure was given to the Los Angeles Times by an individual intimately familiar with sales, but unauthorized to speak publicly on the matter. HBO televised the bout.

Mayweather threatened his own record 4.6 million buys with Pacquiao on Aug. 26, when he defeated UFC champion Conor McGregor by 10th-round technical knockout in a fight that Showtime announced as exceeding 4 million buys.

The network has yet to announce a finalized figure for that novelty non-title boxing match.

Alvarez, aided by a heavily criticized 118-110 scorecard from judge Adalaide Byrd, wobbled Golovkin with a 10th-round punch and swept the final three rounds, setting the stage for a May 2018 rematch that is already being negotiated.

The sales are the best yet for Golovkin. While Golovkin, 35, didn’t exceed 200,000 buys in either of his two prior pay-per-views, Alvarez’s loss to Mayweather in 2013 surpassed 2 million buys. Alvarez generated 1 million buys in May while defeating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision, and had 900,000 buys in his November 2015 triumph over four-division champion Miguel Cotto.

A Golden Boy Promotions executive declined to comment on the sales figure, and Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler was not immediately available for comment.

It was on the list of banned substances and it wasn't his first time testing dirty. All of these fighters from other countries are getting popped from the more stringent drug testing. With the old testing you could do a Povetkin and train in a country where the shit is legal and cycle off before testing started. Not anymore.

idk he's scared. i think he needs 2 rune up fights to see how his arm is working after the surgery. he knows he can go in there half assing it with spence. spence on the other hand is hungry but need to get a couple of fight with upper tier welterweights. peterson is a good direction.the brook fight was going back and forth until spence started taking over during the 8th. that was close fight too. if they fought right now i give the nod to spence. but keith got the better resume.

kell is elite and big for welter. i dont believe keith can beat kell. furthermore keith is weak to the body and spence focuses on body work. he dont want that shit. thats why he stays stammering and stuttering. errol doesnt need to prove to anything anymore. keith needs to get in that ring with the kid for 2018

Got hit in the temple he tried to get up the best he could but his body failed him. He was paralyzed for like 8 secs so good stoppage by the ref but I understand him feelin he could continue because it usually don't linger that's why he was good right after.

When I use to box I saw the shit happen many times even seen mfers come back and win if they make it pass the count usually the bell saves em tho

keeping it real, the only dude that we talk about that kell beat in the welterweight division is shawn porter. the other dudes he beat aren't 10-15 in that division. the brook vs spence fight was very close until the ending of the 8th. now if brook didn't take that ggg fight would his other orbital socket had broke in the spence fight? we didn't start talking about thurman's takng body shots until the colllazo gave him that liver shot. thurman was able to deal with porter's rough hosing and body shots. as well as garcia. i'm just saying i don't think he's sacred of spence. he definitely want to take a tune up or 2 after coming back from surgery. in addition spence gets more experience with the welterweights in ring. that fight will happen in late 2018. i'm calling november.
