Official juicing/blending recipe/routine/tips thread

From a search I've seen a few threads on what kind of juicer to buy-- this is a good one if you're looking for tips on that-- but no dedicated thread where people talk about what they do with their blenders/juicers.

So that's what this is for.

I just got a Vitamix 5300 this week and started using it today. It blended my avocado seeds perfectly and made them an indistinguishable part of my juice.

I made four batches of drinks, around 64 ounces each depending on the containers I had.

  • 1) Strawberry banana.

Just three bananas and two pounds of strawberries. Plus a little water, just what I used to get the container clean. Should have added some water to the actual blending because, while it tasted good, this was more like pre-chewed eating than drinking. Rookie mistake.

  • 2) Morning blend for the next week.

4 avocado seeds, three apples, two pears, an orange, five teaspoons of chlorella, three teaspoons of spirulina and water.

This shit is going to be nasty as fuck but it's going to be nice to have a healthy morning drink prepares for once. I'll probably mix up the fruits here but I really like starting my day with avocado seeds, chlorella and spirulina.

  • 3) Evening enjoyment blend.

An orange, an apple, a banana, a pear, two nectarines, two avocado seeds, water.

Just something healthy for after work.
  • 4) Peeling drink.
Four banana peels, an orange peel, a lemon peel, water.

I plan to drink this before bed throughout the next week. This is an extension of my avocado-seed eating ways. I don't want to be wasteful generally and wasting valuable resources is just foolish. All of this drink was "trash" from my other drinks, outside of the lemon peel, which was "trash" from guacamole I made.
Overall, I didn't put enough water in my first batch of drinks. But I'm really happy with my blender so it's just a matter of finding the right ingredients and routine. Gonna figure out what I'm going to drink post-workout and just continue drinking these fruit blends throughout the next week.

On eating orange peels:

Oranges are one of the most popular fruits in the U.S., but very few consume the peel, which is arguably the healthiest part of the whole fruit. Orange peels are rich in flavonoids, like hesperidin and polymethoxyflavones (PMFs), and other phytochemicals, which contribute many of their health benefits.

Flavonoids
antioxidant compounds found in certain fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices — are known for their role in helping to prevent chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.

In addition, orange peel contains higher amounts of certain nutrients than its flesh. For instance, 3.5 ounces of orange peel provides 136 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C, while the flesh contains about 71 mg.
1

Orange peel also contains considerable amounts of calcium, copper, magnesium, vitamin A, folate and other B vitamins and dietary fiber.

They have an intense orange and bitter flavor, but the latter is often a clue that a food is healthy; the bitter taste is the result of the many flavonoids that orange peels contain.

On eating banana peels:

The sweet flesh of a medium-sized banana contains significant percentages of your daily recommended intake of various nutrients, such as:
  • 12% of your daily fiber, which helps with digestion and may help lower your risk of diabetes
  • 17% of your vitamin C, which is important for your immune system as well as growth and development
  • 20% of your vitamin B-6, which aids the body's ability to convert food into energy
  • 12% of your potassium, which helps in development of cells, tissues, and organs throughout the body
  • 8% of your magnesium, which is important for the body's energy productions and regulating glucose and blood pressure levels
If you then eat the skin along with the flesh you get an even bigger boost in these same nutrients:

"[The skin] contains high amounts of vitamin B6 and B12, as well as magnesium and potassium. It also contains some fiber and protein," San Diego-based nutritionist Laura Flores told LiveScience.

Thanks for this thread. I was actually about to start my juicing game. Visited an old co-worker of mines from the television industry last year and he introduced me to it. Though I was hesitant to try the drink he made it actually tasted good and he said it can actually full you up like a real meal plus it helped him lose weight. So I was about to start looking at picking up a juicer cause lately my eating habits been terrible.

Oh yeah the one he made me I believe had:

Apples
Pears
Celery
Carrots
Beats
Oranges(I think)

You definitely got the right blender but I didn't see any greens in your concoctions.

Start throwing some raw greens in like kale collard dandelion or spinach!

When done right, you won't taste the greens.

And I don't agree that it has to taste nasty to be super good for you!
don't believe the hype! :itsawrap:

I just replaced my 5-year old NutriBullet with a Nutri-Ninja. I was going to invest in a VitaMix. Just couldn't justify the cost right now.

Love the Nutri-Ninja. But can't use it in the morning. Shit sounds Like an aircraft carrier. So I wait until I get home from work in the afternoons to use it. I love to blend celery, cucumbers, pineapple, and mango. I usually will add ginger or tumeric root.

And I use organic coconut water or aloe juice as a liquid base.

QVC has easy pay...you do not have to pay for a Vitamix all at once.

I know. The funny thing is that a few days after I purchased the Ninja, HSN had a VitaMix model for about $150 off for $349. I thought about it. But the Ninja cost me $109. So I decided to keep it.

Can't you just make your juice for the morning the night/afternoon before?

I wouldn't want the hassle of using it more than once or twice a week.

I bought some kale but I just didn't use it. I still have a bunch of pears and nectarines I didn't use. This was just a first trial run.

But I definitely need to be throwing that shit in smoothies because I think it's nasty as hell as a salad. Just dry and bitter.

I don't think something has to be nasty to be good for you-- i.e. the strawberry banana drink. But good shit can be nasty-- i.e. spirulina and chlorella powder or banana peels. I'd rather sit on my ass than exercise and I'd rather eat burgers and potato chips than salmon and fruit but, for me, this isn't about immediate pleasure or pretending the process is always pleasurable.

Nah.
I rather make it fresh as soon as I get in.

Then I drink it as I cook dinner. Juices/Smoothies tend to lose their flavor and properties overnight. From various articles and books I've read anyway. The Loss of flavor and taste I can definitely tell. Though the other I would guess is subject to what you use.

I thought you might say that.

I wonder why that is with juice. Most foods seem to get stronger as it settles-- my guacamole will be much spicier tomorrow than it was today, for instance, because the peppers will have had a chance to take hold.

It's all preference-- I value convenience and I'd be drinking juice from the store or alcohol anyway, so it's not like store bought juice is any fresher when that's your alternative.

How the hell do you crush avocado seeds?

But yeah, this thread is on point. I plan on using this. I have been putting celery stalks in my smoothies and they're not as bad as I thought they'd be, they're actually pretty good. I can't use all fruit cuz I got da suga

I used to cut them into quarters when I had a cheap blender. With the Vitamix, I just throw them in there. Click the avocado link in the first post.

I have a top of the line Brevel juicer and I've used it maybe a dozen times in the past 6 years.

Juicing is cool but I don't like throwing away all of that pulp because that's a lot of fiber you're throwing away!

Plus the clean up is a hassle.

With my vitamix I the clean up takes less than a minute!

Once you juice you break down the molecules, cell walls, atoms of the fruit which begins the oxidation process. This effectively begins the breakdown of the product which effects taste. And depending on what exactly you juice you may also begin the fermentation process due to the sugars turning into acids and/or gas... Ideally you want to juice and drink asap for maximum health benefits.. At absolute most a 24-48 hour period shouldnt be exceeded from juice to consumption. You also need to start adding some greens in your smoothies YP. Great job on getting started tho. Keep it up.

Don't you hate having to clean that muthafucka though? I have a Breville too, but having to clean it is the worst. The Vitamix, though it is hella expensive...is so much easier to use and clean. Lot less of a hassle imo

yes, I clean right after use with hot water and the brush that came with it. Also for the pulp collection part, i always put a walmart bag in so i can just throw the pulp out without cleaning the back portion. It makes Great Juice. I am just looking for something to make smoothies. I will look into the nutribullet...I asked about the hamilton Beach because i wanted something big enough to make 2-3 servings at once

its not just flavor, the juices are said to start to lose nutrients through oxidation as soon as you make them, the longer you wait to less you get.. with that said its still going to be one of the best things for your body but not as good as drinking it right then and there.

I got this one at home but its just a pain to do the juicing. Omega 8006
