From the NYTimes:
A Timeline of the ‘Lost’ Universe

"Lost," which began its final season on Feb. 2, isn't just about plane crashes, polar bears, magical numbers and mysterious black smoke. It's also about choosing whether to surrender to destiny or to determine your own fate. To keep track of which side (i.e. Jack or Locke) is winning, you need to see the results of their choices; hence the show, and some of its characters, have been hopping around in time for several seasons. Because this can get awfully confusing — did Desmond meet Faraday before or after Ben wiped out the Dharma Initiative? — we've arranged some major events of the show's first five seasons in chronological order. — MIKE HALE

it was a bible i believe.

I don't think that it was a bible. It looked too small and thin. They showed it for a split second and then he made some comment about it. I might have to go back and watch that scene again. Im too addicted to this show.... :smh:

let me know, cause i could have sworn i heard some one say its a bible.

but anyway, check this out. Plothole?

I know I haven't gotten there yet, but I need to mention it now: Flocke/Man in Black turns out to be the Smoke Monster. Why on earth, then, is the Smoke Monster a security system for the temple? The Others living at the temple are terrified of the Man in Black - he is their enemy. How did the monster ever serve as a successful security system if the others are trying to defend the temple from it?

Dont know if thats a plot hole really. what if jacob has the same abilities. if he is doing with sayid what man in black did with locke it would make sense he is also a "smoke monster"

In the Bible, Jacob and Esau (Man in Black, Bizarro Locke or FLocke aka Smoke Monster) were brothers. God loved Jacob and hated Esau because he sold his birthright to Jacob. Esau's descendents were the Edomites. Jacob moved his family to Egypt, and had a son named Benjamin...

Man in Black bka Bizarro Locke/Flocke aka Smoke Monster (Esau) "want's to go home." He want's his birthright back.

yeah, nothing can be a pothole on this show.

The flash-sideways are simply a glimpse at an alternate reality (or parallel world) in which Oceanic Flight 815 never crashed. Mainly due to the fact that in this reality, the Island has been sunk and is currently residing at the bottom of the ocean - Atlantis style. Note that the Barracks are clearly seen underwater so this must have happened sometime AFTER the DHARMA Initiative arrived on the Island. The interesting thing about this timeline is that everyone is still going to suffer their same fates or destinies (Whatever Happened, Happened) just in completely different ways. Edward Mars - the U.S. Marshal - still got his head bashed in, it was just Kate doing it with a bathroom stall door instead of flying luggage during the crash. And Charlie still almost choked to death, it was just from trying to swallow a bag full of heroin instead of getting strung up with rope on the Island by Ethan Rom. So you can pretty much count on Boone getting killed (probably from a big fall), Kate still having to deliver Claire's baby (maybe prematurely in the taxi), etc.

The other parallel world that we're witnessing is the same one that we've been following for six years. And I believe that we've even witnessed other alternate realities within this one. Which would explain some of the major inconsistencies in the show - the two completely different Hatch layouts, the different pictures of Desmond and Penny, the variations on the painting of Ben's mother that he had in the Other's Barracks, the two completely different looking lottery tickets that Hurley had, etc. I know that bloopers happen on TV shows, but why would they have completely different looking props for the same item like the lottery ticket? If they were going to make a backup prop, wouldn't they make it look exactly the same? Would they actually go to the trouble of painting two different pictures if it didn't mean something?

And don't forget the book that Jacob was busy reading on the park bench when Locke was pushed out of the window by Cooper - Everything That Rises Must Converge. The title is a reference to a work by the French philosopher Pierre Teilhard De Chardin titled the "Omega Point": "Remain true to yourself, but move ever upward toward greater consciousness and greater love! At the summit you will find yourselves united with all those who, from every direction, have made the same ascent. For everything that rises must converge." I think that the show will end when the Omega Point is finally reached and all of the various parallel worlds converge into one.

Of course, it's just a theory. And I have had an awful lot of coffee this morning...

also, jack needed a pen when he first got on the island to help rose.
Jack recognizes Desmond - the question is, does he recognize him from the running of the stadium steps (which may or may not have happened in the ATL) or from the MTL? Because I'm not sure the stadium steps meeting would occur in the ATL at all. If the bomb went off in 1977, it certainly killed Charles Widmore, who was on the island at the time. No Widmore should mean no Penny. No Penny should mean no sailing race and no sailing race should mean no stadium steps run.

I just finished watching the epi again, and the name of the book that Hurley picked up was Sören Kierkegaard's Crainte et Tremblement (Translation: Fear and Trembling). Here's an excerpt from the wiki on it.

Fear and Trembling (original Danish title: Frygt og Bæven) is an influential philosophical work by Søren Kierkegaard, published in 1843 under the pseudonym Johannes de silentio (John the Silent). The title is a reference to a line from Philippians 2:12, "...continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling."

Fear and Trembling presents a highly original and provocative interpretation of the Binding of Isaac story as told in Genesis Chapter 22, and uses the story as an occasion to discuss fundamental issues in moral philosophy and the philosophy of religion, such as the nature of God and faith, faith's relationship with ethics and morality, and the difficulty of being authentically religious

As for the plot hole, I remember Ben saying that the Black Smoke was a Security System. But I dont remember anyone saying it was for the Temple. I think that it is a security system for the island. In the last season finale, I remember the man in black saying stuff against the slave ship coming in. ("They come, they fight..." etc.) I think that Jacob keeps him in check, but when Jacob died, they had to go into full defensive mode.

i think sayid will become like Richard. Something else about the plane ride, Desmon and Jack met before the trip. They met at the arena while working out. So how far back did they really take us? And whats up with the stewardess. First we saw her with Ben and the kids, when Jack, Sawyer and Kate got captured, and now we see her with these new people.

I believe she was the original stewardess, she was a survivor. I think she was taken when the children were taken in season 1.

yeah i know, but something seems odd about her. why was she with the others at first, and now with the people at the temple. i think there is more to her.

if jacob keeps him in check, how was he able to kill eko. and also, the smoke monster came from that hole by the temple twice, once when he killed the french team and then again when he almost brung locke down.

Good points. Maybe Jacob was trapped in the cabin when the smoke monster was running around unchecked. Hopefully, they will explain it this season.

I don't think Jacob was trapped either. I have a feeling that a Smoke Monster may have been banished there. Just think about it for a second. The only people we've actually seen there was Christian(Probably a smoke monster), Real life Claire, and the original shadowy figure that told Locke to "help me". Now that certainly can't explain everything cause we've seen Christian in other locations throughout the island. But like Tim said there may be two. And you have to assume the ash circle was keeping someone in there, simply cause we've seen someone that we know was dead for sure in the cabin as alive as can be. Now whats the point of those ashes if any spirit can just pass through it. Also you have to ask yourself why protect that cabin but still give the monster free roam of the entire island? There has to be two. Besides Jacob's followers burned that cabin down for a reason.

also, Horace built that cabin.
But heres another thought. What if Jacob is actually the evil one and Flocke is the good one? Who brought the people to the island? Jacob. Who was against the black rock coming there? Flocke. He even commented on the people coming there would do nothing but fight and destroy (something like that). There really is no indication as to who is good and who is evil. We assume white (white shirt) is good and black (black shirt) is bad, but it could be reversed. Also, when leaving the foot, Flocke says to the people "im ashamed of you all", as if to say "why would you assume im the evil one".

This is something to think about. I know no one wants to go back and rewatch every episode. But what real signs point to jacob being good and flocke being evil.

another gem:
The stewardess, first shes on the plane, then shes an "other", as we see her when Jack, sawyer and kate get captured. She appears with the kids and speaks to jack while he is in the cage. And now she is at the temple, again with the kids. But this time at the temple, she has an accent. Whats the story with her?

damn this shit is deep, and very well written. it would suck if the major questions dont get answered.

Thats a very good point. Who's to say Jacob is good. "Jacob is evil",I can see some shit like that going down in the last episode. Tricking everybody and switching that shit up in the end.

Jack and Sawyer ultimately replacing Jacob and Smokie? Now THAT could happen. Didn't think of it until it was suggested here, but it would make sense in the end. Good forecast, cat.

Ok so......the pool in the Temple was "DARK" because Jaccob was ddead?

And if so, did his spirit fuse/possess Syid?

where did desmond go, and where the fuck did that Last Samurai dude come from?

Anyone else trip that the stewardess said jack and them were from the FIRST plane crash?

Here's a theory about he pool

The spring water in the Temple was darkened because it reflects the balance between Jacob and The Smoke Monster, and now with Jacob gone the balance has shifted towards the dark. The water was previously clear; the fact that it is now dark must mean the dark is now in control. However, it is unusual that the keepers of the temple were not aware of the reason for the shift in color, although this could be because it has never happened before and they were simply unprepared.
The water was once clear because it was the power of healing people provided by Jacob. Once Jacob died it lost its power to heal, thats why when the leader of the temple puts his cut hand in the water nothing happens. They still place Sayid into the water so that he could die and Jacob's spirit may inhabit Sayid's body. Where as Jacob is capable of giving life, why Richard never ages and people are healed when they are on the island.

The Dark spring

It looks like its Sayid/Jacob vs John/Smokey.

I think when Juliet said it worked that caused events to change and people to move other places and thats why I think Desmond disappeared.

I think the second plane crash was the one with John, Sun, Ben and Jacob's goons.

what I wanna know is why did they show Claire in the back of the cabby when Kate was trying to escape but didn't show her on the plane...?! And yea I think they purposely "killed" Sayid so Jacob could take over his body. Hopefully they'll answer more questions tonight

check this out I just read

What does the name of Claire's first child, women who die if they get pregnant on the island, and the chocolate bar Jacob gives to Jack, all have to do with the identity of the smoke monster? Sir, let me
fill you in.
Jacob gives Sawyer literacy and Hurley confidence. He blesses Jin's and Sun's wedding. He councils Kate to put her criminal nature to better use. He even gives John new life. To Jack, he gives a chocolate bar. Yet its not just any chocolate bar. Its an Apollo bar, as found in the Hatch. Far more educated people than myself have stated that Apollo was a Greek version of the Egytian god Osiris. I'm not sure that is quite so
obvious, but I'll accept that to bolster my argument.
The central myth of Egyptian mythology is the titanic struggle between two gods. Osiris and Set were both brothers and antagonists. Set murdered Osiris. However, Isis, who was the bride of Osiris, conceived a son after Osiris' death. His name was Horus, and just as Hamlet would grow up to avenge his father death, now Horus would have to contend with his uncle Set to reclaim his father's throne. Incidently, Horus' symbol was the hawk, as seen in the tapistry Jacob was weaving. As a child, Horus was hidden from Set in a reed basket to protect him from his uncle, in a myth that would later re-appear as the Exodus tale of the birth of Moses.
Moses? Exodus? Have we heard those names somewhere before? And as I recall, Moses had an elder brother. What was his name again?
Throughout season 3, we were led to ask the question as to why pregnant women die on the island. Juliet is brought to the island to answer that question. Yet she discovers in season 5 that women could certainly give birth there in the past. We have assumed that Claire survived to give birth because Aaron was conceived off the island, and Sun survived because she gave birth off the island. However, what if it's not the island that's causing the deaths, which brings me to the real question I've always wondered. Juliet is told that the women who died under her care volunteered, knowing full well the risks. Why? Knowing every single woman who attempted this died, why would they do this? For science? Or for something greater? Maybe the question isn't where the child was conceived, but rather who is fathering these all of these pregnancies.
So if Jacob is Osiris, and the smoke monster is Set, then who is Isis? Who will give birth to the savior of the island. Well, if I were Jacob and needed a mate, I'd be looking for someone who we know can give birth on the island.
I think I now know what Jack's purpose is. He needs to protect someone. Someone on the island, and possibly hiding in a reed basket.
