Adrianne Palicki cast in 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' as Mockingbird

adrianne-palicki_612x380.jpg

At last, Adrianne Palicki is going to play a TV superhero.

The Friday Night Lights actress has been cast in a guest star role as fan favorite Bobbi Morse (a.k.a. Mockingbird) in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., EW has confirmed. For fans of the comics, she’s a S.H.I.E.L.D. field agent who used the costumed identity of the Huntress and also Mockingbird (image below). S.H.I.E.L.D. guest star Patton Oswalt first announced Morse was coming to the show in a video that played at Comic-Con panel, while THR broke the news of Palicki’s casting.

Palicki previously had the starring role in NBC’s infamous Wonder Woman pilot that didn’t got to series, plus had a role in the The WB’s Aquaman pilot. The plan is to introduce Morse in the fifth episode of the show’s upcoming second season, which gets underway Sept. 23. She’ll join fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. new hires Kyle MacLachlan as Skye’s (Chloe Bennet) father and Lucy Lawless as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Isabelle Hartly.

Here’s Mockingbird from the comics:

The billboard keeps with the minimalist tone the super series set going into its freshman run.

Can you decipher the alien equation? Tune in to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. on ABC.

They should have saved Creel for the Avengers or Thor. Same thing with Graviton.

I guess they will use Kang, Thanos and people like that. Really wish they could get back the FF so they could use Doom.

‘Agents Of SHIELD’ Season 2 Spoilers: First Photo Of Lucy Lawless Released Online; Could Isabelle Hartley Be Coulson’s Love Interest?

coulson-isabelle-hartley-lucy-lawless-love-interest.jpg

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 will introduce Lucy Lawless as Agent Isabelle Hartley in Season 2. Marvel just released the first image of the “Xena: Warrior Princess” actress in character (see it on Marvel.com), but it doesn’t tell us much about her character.

“[Isabelle Hartley is] a longtime S.H.I.E.L.D. agent,” co-creator Maurissa Tancharoen told Hitflix. “So she has a history with Coulson. She’s great. She’s badass. She’s everything we love [about] Lucy Lawless.”

A past with Coulson could refer to a romantic history. Does this indicate that Hartley will be a potential love interest for the S.H.I.E.L.D. Director? We speculated after her casting announcement that Lawless could be Coulson’s new love interest and with so many characters in love triangles it might be nice for Coulson to have at least one person romantically interested in him.

Last season Amy Acker played a cellist that was Coulson’s former flame. However, Coulson still hasn’t revealed to her that he is alive. She thinks Coulson is dead and he thinks that the cellist is safer without him. A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent might be the only person Coulson can feel safe with.

If Hartley is the badass that Tancharoen claims, then she could be a good match for Coulson. He needs someone who is tough and can understand that his job isn’t at all normal. He lives on an airplane where he keeps his flying car and there is an alien serum in his body that brought him back from the dead. Coulson has a dark past and a tough S.H.I.E.L.D. agent might be the only one who can handle his baggage. Even if Lawless doesn’t end up as Coulson’s love interest, a great agent is necessary for Coulson’s S.H.I.E.L.D. rebuild.

There is no word yet on how long Hartley will stick around for but co-creator Jed Whedon said that her story had an arc, implying at least a few episodes. While the episode with her first appearance hasn't been confirmed, the picture of Isabelle Hartley is the first still released from "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Season 2. So, it's safe to assume she'll appear very early in the season.

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Season 2 Promos: Fight in the Shadows

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/bbdK-dyh1l0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

There will be multiple comic book-inspired television series to choose from during the upcoming fall TV season; most of them are new to the airwaves, but there are a couple of returnees, including Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series. The show’s first season was, for many, a decidedly mixed bag that nonetheless ultimately managed to (arguably) justify its season two renewal - in part based on the expectation that the second lap of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s run goes smoother than its dash out of the gate.

ABC has released a pair of promos for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s sophomore season. The first (see above) is a bit of action and humor borrowed from season one, while the second clip (see below) contains actual new footage. Moreover, it’s the latter that foreshadows what Clark Gregg (who’s once again leading the party as Agent Phil Coulson) has promised will be a season that offers more in the way of low-tech espionage adventuring and mature dramatic content.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two will, as Gregg has put it, in no small part be about Coulson and his team “figuring out what S.H.I.E.L.D. ought to be” in the aftermath of the organization’s collapse last season. The TV spot featured below does indeed allude to the challenging nature of life for Coulson and his Agent family, now that they’re operating off the grid. It’s foremost a tone setter, but the preview also contains glimpses at dangers both new (here, the super-powered Absorbing Man) and lingering from the past (see a bearded Brett Dalton as now-disgraced Agent Ward).

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/G9AO576ykeo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Ward storyline isn’t the only narrative thread left dangling after season one that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be picking up early on during its second season. Coulson looks to continue and experience strange issues as a result of him having taken the GH 325 serum, while more will soon be revealed about Skye’s mysterious past via Kyle MacLachlan’s character. And, as the season two promo above briefly reminds us, we still don’t know what Fitz’ condition is (other than he is still alive), after what happened to him in the season one finale.

Fingers crossed, the answers to the questions will prove to be satisfying, as will the manner in which S.H.I.E.L.D. ends up incorporating new players – be they Lucy Lawless as Agent Isabelle Hartley or Adrianne Palicki (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as Mockingbird from the Marvel comic book universe – into the fold this season. Feel free and let us know what elements have you interested in checking out S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s next season, in the comments section below.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two premieres on ABC on September 23rd, 2014 at 9/8 c.

‘Agents of SHIELD’ Season 2 Spoilers: Official Synopsis Reveals What’s In Store For Phil Coulson And His Team

agents-shield-season-2-synopsis.jpg

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 released an official synopsis for the new season and it was filled with juicy spoilers. The Season 2 premiere will pick up right where the finale left off -- with Phil Coulson drawing cryptic etchings, Leo Fitz in a coma and Grant Ward in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody after it was revealed that he was a double agent for Hydra. Expect “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 to expand on all of these storylines and more. Check out what’s going on with the show’s core characters:

Coulson’s Being Watched

Melinda May is still watching Coulson, even though he now knows about Project T.A.H.I.T.I. and Nick Fury has gone off the grid. May still doesn’t know how Coulson is going to react to the GH.325 serum, and it looks like the side effects are finally coming. Last season ended with Coulson making some strange drawings in the middle of the night and it looks like May is going to be concerned about the etchings. It seems like Coulson is writing in an alien language, but it isn’t clear if Coulson even knows what it means.

Fitzsimmons Is In Danger

We already know that there is a possible love triangle, but Fitzsimmons might not have a professional relationship anymore. Fitz’s coma will damage his cognitive functions and it isn’t clear if he’ll ever recover. Without full control of his brain, he might not even be able to work with S.H.I.E.L.D. as an engineer. For Simmons, this is going to be a painful adjustment. The two function as a duo and it’s going to be heard for the biochemist to work without her partner.

Lance Hunter Joins The Team

Lance Hunter will be introduced as a new S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that Coulson has added to the team. Because Coulson is rebuilding the organization, Hunter didn’t rise through training the way most agents do. His story could mimic Skye’s unconventional training but it sounds like Hunter is a little less trustworthy. He is described as “a dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit.” Some of that sharp could be helpful to Coulson, but it could also mean that Hydra is still trying to infiltrate the organization. Don’t expect to discover Hunter’s true motives very soon, though. Actor Nick Blood was added as a series regular, so it looks like this storyline will carry through most of Season 2.

Skye’s Parents

Skye also has GH.325 in her system, and she could start displaying Coulson's symptoms soon. However, it sounds like she is more concerned about her mysterious parents. Kyle MacLachlan was confirmed as Skye’s father (joining a slew of guest stars), so most fans knew that Skye’s parents would be explored. The young agent is going to still struggle with her identity as a 0-8-4, “an object of unknown origin.” Skye doesn’t know what her parents are, but she is wondering if there is something different about her because of them. If her parents are evil, could that mean that there are dark forces inside her?

S.H.I.E.L.D. agents assemble: Marvel releases Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 cast photo

5410cdc68760e.jpg

Returning for its second season is Clark Gregg as Director Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Agent Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward and B.J. Britt as Agent Antoine Triplett. Joining the cast for the second season are new recruits Nick Blood as Lance Hunter and Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mac” Mackenzie.

ABC and Marvel have released a bunch of new photos for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD: Season 2, and while the ones from the premiere are certainly interesting, it's also worth looking over the full cast photo.

While the original six stars are all back, it looks like we can expect prominent roles for the returning B.J. Britt as Antoine Tripplet, plus newcomers Nick Blood (as Lance Hunter) and Henry Simmons (as Alphonso "Mac" Mackenzie), all of of whom make it into the cast pic as well.

The premiere photos reveal more of what's to come when Brian Patrick Wade debuts as Carl "Crusher" Creel, AKA the Absorbing Man, who it seems faces off with Glenn Talbot (returning guest star Adrian Pasdar). Patton Oswalt also returns in the premiere as Billy Koenig, while Lucy Lawless makes her debut as Isabelle “Izzy” Hartley.

'Agents Of SHIELD' Season 2 Spoilers: Watch Lucy Lawless' First Scene With A New Villain In Sneak Peek Video From Premiere

lucy-lawless-agents-shield-premiere.jpg

The “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 premiere isn’t until Sept. 23, but ABC is giving fans a sneak peek before the episode airs. Season 2 will pick up with Coulson as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D., but he’ll be rebuilding the organization after Hydra’s infiltration. S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t have much besides ready and willing agents right now, so they’ll have to do a lot of work to keep the agency running. That might even include buying S.H.I.E.L.D.’s information and evidence back.

In a sneak peek from Lucy Lawless’ first episode, Isabelle Hartley and her team are on a mission for S.H.I.E.L.D. She has arranged a deal with a man called Agent Browning who used to work at a S.H.I.E.L.D. containment facility. May, Skye and Tripplet are watching the deal from afar.

Browning tells Hartley that she was the highest bidder. He doesn’t really care if he is selling the information to S.H.I.E.L.D. allies or Hydra. It turns out that he doesn’t even have the box that they want. He has information on where the government has it and what it is. Browning is selling Hartley a file that was classified as Level 10 clearance, the most classified file that was held at Browning's facility.

“You’re selling us a needle in a haystack,” Hartley says.

“Finding the haystack is up to you,” Browning says. "I know your reputation. I’m sure you’ll be fine."

They argue about the terms of their agreement and realize that Browning has one guard more than he came in with. When Browning turns around to see who it is, Crusher Creel attacks them. Hartley’s team tries to shoot him, but Crusher is unaffected.

May, Skye and Triplett come in as back up, but Crusher jumps out of the window (a 25 foot drop). Hartley doesn’t appreciate Coulson sending backup without her knowledge, but she still calls him to find out their next orders.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Boss Talks Criticism and Why the Show Deserves a Second Chance

140923agents-shield1_300x206.jpg

When Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered last fall, the drama failed to live up to the hype. This is because even though S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered in September, the series had to wait until Captain America was released in April to reveal HYDRA had infiltrated the organization, completely changing the direction of the show. That means they spent nearly eight months simply biding time! But once S.H.I.E.L.D. was shut down and clean-cut Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) was revealed to be a sleeper HYDRA agent, the tide began to turn in the show's favor. But was it too little too late?

Executive producer Jeff Bell talked to TVGuide.com about the show's negative reception, what's in store for Season 2 and why fans should give it a second chance.

The finale left us with a very troubling image of Coulson (Clark Gregg). What state will he be in when the show picks up?

Jeff Bell: The thing we've been asking and the thing we've been giving some of the answers to is, 'What will I become?' And we think that works for S.H.I.E.L.D., we think that works for each of our characters. But we love the idea that just as Coulson is tasked with being the director of this defunct organization, this little chink in his armor with, why is he writing this strange writing? I think it's a compelling image and I think it's definitely something we will explore this season.

Now that Coulson has been tasked with building a new S.H.I.E.L.D., how will this change the show?

Bell: Drastically. We are no longer this trillion-dollar international organization that can tap into every person's cell phone on the planet with fleets of heli-carriers. We are now truly the ragtag group of people who are hunted by the government, still hunted by HYDRA. They're not really funded. They have no jurisdiction anywhere. They can't go in and flash a S.H.I.E.L.D. badge. A lot of the cool tech because of that will be stripped away and because in ways, we're going to throw back to a simpler time. S.H.I.E.L.D. grew out of an organization called the SSR, which goes back to World War II and we think it's fun to sort of take S.H.I.E.L.D. to a simpler place, because if you're going to rebuild something you want to rebuild it from the ground up.

People did seem to enjoy the show so much more when the agents became underdogs at the end of last season.

Bell: We felt that way! It's hard to say, 'Yay! They're tapping my phone.' ...

Especially with all the NSA stuff that was happening last year and everybody listening in on everybody's information. S.H.I.E.L.D., in many ways — that was their bread and butter. And so the fact that the people who were leading that were proven to be corrupt, as I think a lot of people fear governments are corrupt, plays into our storytelling. And then having the good people within the corrupt organization is also something I think people really respond to ... I think there's something really powerful about that — knowing there are people who are trying to make the world a better and safer place.

And I think we're in a much more sympathetic position to do so now.
The show was criticized a lot at the beginning, in part because the agents had too much power. What was that criticism like knowing you had the HYDRA twist coming later?

Bell: That was our challenge last year. We knew HYDRA was in S.H.I.E.L.D. and we knew HYDRA was the Big Bad for our season. But we couldn't say what we called 'the H word' until after the movie came out. I think we found other ways to tell compelling stories, though it felt more standalone in the beginning. As it started to connect and as the pieces started coming together, I think it gained momentum. Our other challenge was we had these five new characters who had never existed in the Marvel universe before and getting people to know and care about them the way they do now. Sometimes that just takes a while.

Now that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been disbanded, will the show continue the case-of-the-week format or become more serialized?

Bell: We're still trying to tell an episode where you can come into the episode and understand the episode, but were trying to continue the momentum we got in the back half of the season. There was an urgency and momentum to the storytelling that I think people really responded to and that I think we really enjoyed writing. So yeah, we'll be continuing to keep people moving.

Are there any specific cases or characters you're particularly excited for fans to see?

Bell: This is where I have to say that I work for Marvel and say that's a really great question, I can't wait to find out the answer to that ... What we're hoping for is you'll recognize the show, but it will feel very different. There's a bunch of new characters on the show and we're on a different base and new villains since Mr. Garrett got blown up about 12 times in the last season.

So as much as we loved him, new antagonists. We think we're telling good stories, but you never know until you put it on the air.

Were you surprised by the negative reception last year?

Bell: Sure, yeah. Because there were about five different things happening at the same time and so what I think was challenging for us was there was no consensus. They'd be like, 'Oh, it's not the movie!' And, 'Oh, you don't have Captain America in your show!' or, 'Oh, you're too standalone!' or, 'Oh, there's not enough Marvel people in it.' It wasn't like everyone said the same thing. And actually, if you look at our ratings they were quite good. I think there were about 12 people on the internet who have a very strong voice and I think as the show sort of played more into what they were expecting, they started to like it more.

What are the challenges and benefits to being so closely tied with the Marvel films?

Bell: The benefits far outweigh the challenges. The benefits are there are this incredibly rich universe that they've created that we get to play in. ... We try to put stuff in that the die-hard fan will love and enjoy but were not going to build a story on something who watch it on ABC won't understand. We're trying to balance that. And so there's a rich body of work for us to draw from. And really the only downside at all is that there are some times when there might be a character or something that we want to play with and they already have plans to play with that person. It's not just our football. It's their football and their field and their referees so if they want that, we understand it.

When the show started there seemed to be a very clear cut definition of good and evil, but it began to get grayer as it went on. Will you continue to muddy those waters?

Bell: It got grayer, but I do think one of the things I love about Agent Phil Coulson is that he's a hero. He's not an antihero. And I do love that about his character. And as the world was crumbling around him, as the company man was learning he was more loyal to the company than the company was to him, he still strove to do the right thing. He wanted to do the right thing in spite of that.

Is it even possible for Coulson to stay a hero with the serum in his body?

Bell: That's a great question. What is this serum? Why is he doing that? Is he in control? Is he losing his mind? Or is he becoming something else? Or will he be fine? Those are all things we are going to explore.
13 stars who dated their friend's ex

Kyle MacLachlan has joined the show as Skye's (Chloe Bennet) dad. Now that he knows where she is, what's his next step?

Bell: In many ways last year, Coulson was a surrogate father to Skye and any time you have a show about a team, it is a metaphor for a family. And so to be able to bring on a character's birth father as well as have a character's surrogate father, I think there's opportunities for really rich storytelling. So there's a lot of exciting things to figure out. Who this guy is and what happened and what's the truth? Because everyone seems to have a different opinion or heard a different story on what happened.

Is there anything you can reveal about what's happened to Fitz (Iain De Caestecker)?

Bell: He's on the show this year. So... that's good. Honestly, we're trying to do our best to let people experience that as purely as possible without any sort of hints or spoilers. He's a robot now! He has no legs but he's got wheels! I'm not saying that's not true, but I'm not telling you that's what it was. He's alive so that's a good thing unless people wanted him dead. We think we have a really rich storyline for all of our characters, Fitz included.

There's going to be an Agent Carter crossover in the premiere. How will that flashback factor into the episode's plot?

Bell: I think it's more fun just to see it. But let me say, it's not just because there's going to be an Agent Carter show on the network. I think we found a way to sort of... because she's, like, 1,000 years old now, and you know. Let's just watch it. But we were thrilled that Hayley [Atwell] came out and played with us.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: 5 Reasons to Watch This Fall

The first season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended with so much excitement, we didn't think we'd make it through the summer. Now, at last, it's almost time for season 2! Here's what we're most looking forward to when Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns at its new time TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 9|8c.

1) Director Coulson

After helping thwart Hydra, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) was appointed as Director and tasked with rebuilding the agency. It won't be an easy job, with the majority of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents dead, free agents, or working for Hydra.

Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot, martial artist and longtime friend, will continue to look after Coulson in the wake of his death and revival via the T.A.H.I.T.I. project.

And what's up with those mysterious etchings he's been carving into walls — can Coulson be trusted?

<iframe width="644" height="362" src="http://abc.go.com/embed/VDKA0_hy0dzuyz" frameborder="0"></iframe>

2) What About Ward?

Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), a S.H.I.E.L.D agent highly trained in combat and espionage, was found to be a Hydra mole and a traitor to S.H.I.E.L.D. He was locked up, away from the world and his former teammates, but this isn't the last we've seen of him.

<iframe width="644" height="362" src="http://abc.go.com/embed/VDKA0_wyuahsy3" frameborder="0"></iframe>

3) Is Skye a Monster?

Badass computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), now a full-fledged S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, discovered her origins as a 0-8-4 — an object of unknown origin — and that her parents were considered "monsters." Could Skye have darkness lying dormant inside of her?
If she does, the personal and professional betrayal by Ward may be just the thing to bring it out...

<iframe width="644" height="362" src="http://abc.go.com/embed/VDKA0_ng91pm2o" frameborder="0"></iframe>

4) The Future of Fitz-Simmons

After being left to die in the middle of the ocean by traitorous Ward, engineer Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and bio-chemist Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) found a way to escape their watery grave. But all did not go well for Fitz, who was left in a coma and may never regain his full cognitive functions. Not having her other half to depend on could be a devastating blow to Simmons, especially considering Fitz finally had the courage to tell her how he really feels about her.

5) New Allies…and New Enemies

As the team rebuilds, they'll face new enemies and need new allies. Joining Coulson's core team is Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), a dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit. Since he didn't rise up through the ranks, he won't be easy to trust. Does Hunter have an ulterior motive for helping out the team?

Also joining the fight: Isabelle Hartly (Lucy Lawless) a veteran S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie, a mechanic inspired by the character that first appeared in NICK FURY VS. S.H.I.E.L.D. #3 and Bobbi Morse, an agent Marvel fans may recognize by her codename, Mockingbird.
Also sure the cause some trouble: hydra baddie Daniel Whitehall (Reed Diamond) and Kyle MacLachlan as a mysterious but critical character: Skye's father!

I really like the show - I tried to sell a bunch of people to it - but most couldn't get through the first 10 episode -

So I now tell people watch Captain America Winter Soldier and then catch the episode immediately following it -

Forget the characters background - none of it matters - just view it as what happens to SHIELD after Cap destroys the Helicarriers - once they look at it like that then people are cool with it.

The season is starting strong - having a Super Powered baddie in the 1st Episode is a good thing -

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D Assemble On A Bright Red Season 2 Poster

ABC has released a new poster for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The Marvel drama returns to TV for its second season in a matter of days. (Spoilers if you're not caught up on Season 1!) Let's take a look at this poster...

_1411176998.jpg

There are a couple of interesting things to note about the poster (via Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Facebook page). There's the ominous red and black coloring, and the stern expression on Coulson's face...

_1411177265.jpg

To Coulson's left and right, we have Chloe Bennet as Skye and Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May. Next to them are Iain De Caestacker as Fitz over on the left, and Elizabeth Henstridge as Simmons. Finally, on the ends, it looks like that might be Nick Blood as Agent Lance Hunter over on the left (confirmed), and Brett Dalton's Grant Ward on the right.

It's well worth pointing out that Ward is facing the other way, which seems like a pretty obvious nod to his betrayal in Season 1. He turned his back on S.H.I.E.L.D. in an effort to serve John Garrett (Bill Paxton), who turned out to be a Hydra supporter. Well, Ward's back is turned to us in this image, and there's a noticeable crack between him and the rest of the team...

_1411177084.jpg

Is there a chance Ward will turn things around for himself and take a shot at redemption? I like to think that because the crack doesn't completely sever Ward from the rest of the group, there's a chance he'll find his way back.

Let's move on to the man all the way on the left. At first I thought we were seeing two Wards in this image, but take a closer look at his face, and it looks like we may be seeing Nick Blood's character Lance Hunter...

_1411177069.jpg

Nick Blood is one of a handful of actors who are set to appear in Season 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

No sign of Triplett in the new poster, but B.J. Britt's character is featured in the cast photo for Season 2....

B.J. Britt as Antoine Triplett, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Nick Blood as Lance Hunter, Henry Simmons as Alphonso 'Mac' Mackenzie, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons and Brett Dalton as Grant Ward. Can S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Brilliance Trump HYDRA's Magnificence? Lucy Lawless Previews the Season 2 Opener

When last we tuned into Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the titular organization had crumbled, its name disgraced, assets depleted. In the wake of a HYDRA-fueled onslaught, Nick Fury (guest star Samuel L. Jackson) resurfaced to appoint Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as Director, so that he might rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D..

To do that, Coulson and his bruised team of agents will need the occasional helping hand — the first of which, as Season 2 opens this Tuesday (ABC, 9/8c), belongs to genre-TV queen Lucy Lawless.

Here, Lawless previews her S.H.I.E.L.D. visit, reveals a crush on Coulson and ponders the outcome of a clash between Agent Hartley and a certain Warrior Queen.

TVLINE | So, it S.H.I.E.L.D. the most super-secretive show you’ve ever worked on or what? Things have changed since the Xena days. TV’s a lot more tight-lipped.

Yes, for sure, for sure. I suppose because you can transmit so much information at the flick of a button. They have to be much more careful with transmission of all kinds of information, but yeah, it’s unparalleled.

TVLINE | Tell me, under what circumstances do we meet Miss Isabelle Hartley?

Well, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been smashed by the treachery of Ward, who’s revealed himself to be a double agent and now Coulson has to pick up the pieces. You get to see globally how many agents they’ve got and the one person he feels he can trust to spearhead this move is an old friend, Isabelle Hartley.

TVLINE | Does she hold Coulson in high regard? Does she feel he’s up to snuff as director?
Yeah. I think she likes him a lot. She doesn’t like many people. She likes him. And she likes her team, but there’s friction with [Coulson’s] guys because they’re so slick and we’re so rag-tag, but she’s like, “Deal with it.”

TVLINE | Well, who are Agents Lance Hunter (played by Nick Blood) and Idaho (Wilmer Calderon) to her?
Lance Hunter is like her favorite nephew. He’s played by Nick Blood, who’s just incredible, a terrific actor. Hunter is in it just for the money, so he’s a bit confused by Isabelle’s adherence to Coulson’s wishes, but she and Coulson go back a long way. I think they’ve really been in the trenches together and whatever side he’s on, she’s on. Idaho is a valued member of her team, someone she has mentored. He’s got skills. Mad skills.

TVLINE | [Showrunner] Maurissa Tancharoen at Comic-Con teased something about a knife always in close proximity to Isabelle…?
Oh, yeah. You never know when you might like to slice some cheese… or worse. She has the air of a Middle Eastern journalist, one of those people who thrives on danger, and we’ll see if she’s bitten off more than she can chew, because HYDRA is incredibly awesome.

TVLINE | What else might we learn about her? Any personal backstory? In the comic books, she had a little something going on with Agent Hand, who’s dead on the TV series. Is that alluded to at all?
You’ll have to ask Maurissa and Jed [Whedon] whether they’re going to explore that. I can’t tell you at this point.

TVLINE | What about this: Who would win in a fight between Isabelle and Xena?
Oh, Xena.

TVLINE | She’s just more brutal.
Mind you, Izzy’s got a gun….

TVLINE | But once Xena breaks out the chakram and knocks the gun out of her hand, all bets are off.
Yeah, Izzy won’t even hear it coming. No, the main difference is that Izzy is a part of the team, whereas Xena can go it alone.

TVLINE | Are we going to get to see you back on Parks and Recreation during its farewell season?
Oh, I hope so. I hope so….

TVLINE | Have you enjoyed getting a taste of that lighter fare there?
I loved that very much. It’s a very special world, and I was very honored to be part of it. And Nick Offerman, what a prince of a man! All of them. Amy Poelher is one of the greatest producer/actor/writers there is. She’s the one that sets the tone for everyone else, as Clark [Gregg] does on this show. He’s so incredibly humble that it sets a great tone for the younger actors, to see how it’s done with grace and humor and intelligence. He’s a lovely man. I fell in a little bit of love with him. Between him and Patton Oswalt (as Agents Koenig), it’s just too much.

TVLINE | Oh God, Patton. What’s his agent’s first name now…?
I call him Pookie.

TVLINE | Give me one last taste for what people can expect from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s season premiere.

You get to see the magnificence of HYDRA and what our team is up against. It’s like S.H.I.E.L.D. represents humanity and HYDRA’s this sort of massive, amorphous evil, so you get to see humanity fighting back with all its wiles and its brilliance and its adaptability — like cockroaches, we will not be beaten. We will survive. We will go on. You get to see the awesomeness of human ingenuity with S.H.I.E.L.D.

TVLINE | There’s also a cool “gifted” in this episode, right? The Absorbing Man?
Oh my God. Yeah, you get to see the incredible Absorbing Man (played by Teen Wolf‘s Brian Patrick Wade). Don’t you remember that character from the comic books as a child? What an epic concept. And that’s part of the awesomeness of HYDRA, that he’s just one of their 500 gifteds.

TVLINE | If you could choose to absorb anything, what would it be? Me, I’d go with pizza.
I’m going to say solar light. That way I could power the world.

TVLINE | That’s a nice green choice.
Yeah, baby!

Any lingering dreams ABC execs had of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rebooting itself into a blockbuster died last night. Season two opened to just 5.6 million same-day viewers, less than half of the show’s series premiere audience (12.1 million); among viewers under 50, the decline was 60 percent (1.9 last night versus 4.7 in 2013). It’s true that S.H.I.E.L.D.’s performance Tuesday was on par with how it finished its first season last May, but that’s cold comfort: Viewing levels are higher in the fall than spring, as is the level of marketing networks commit to premiere week. Nobody expected S.H.I.E.L.D. would come close to last September’s numbers, but to show virtually no growth between spring and fall, particularly for a show with the heft of Marvel behind it, is a crushing defeat. One caveat: S.H.I.E.L.D. typically makes huge gains from DVR replays, and ABC is projecting the show will surge to 9.2 million viewers and a 3.1 demo rating after seven days of time-shifting is tallied. Still, even with such a boost, S.H.I.E.L.D. will still end up 25 percent below its season-one DVR demo average (4.0 rating).

'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.': You may have missed this major spoiler from the premiere

agents-of-shield_612x380.jpg

While fans were geeking out over seeing Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and the Howling Commandos in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere, they may have missed a major tease at what’s to come during the first five minutes of the episode.

After Agent Carter & Co. take down Daniel Whitehall’s (Reed Diamond) Hydra outpost in the ‘40s, the SSR packs up various boxes, including the 0-8-4 at the center of the episode in present day, an obelisk that eventually claims the life of Isabelle Hartley (Lucy Lawless).

Moments prior, however, Dum Dum Dugan (Neal McDonough) takes a peek inside a different box before Carter quickly closes it. If you look closely, we got a blink-and-you’d-miss-it look at what appears to be a blue alien within the box. Could this be the very same blue alien that eventually brought Coulson (Clark Gregg) back to life? And will we see this box again?

“I think you know us well enough to know that we don’t put anything there by accident,” executive producer Jeph Loeb told EW at a press screening of the first two episodes of the ABC series on Tuesday night. Added executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen: “It’s not just for kicks.”

agents-of-shield-03.jpg

And here’s the alien we saw last season

agents-of-shield-02.jpg

The powers that be behind S.H.I.E.L.D. have remained notoriously mum on the identity of the blue alien’s race since it first appeared last season. What is known is that the organization had been housing the blue alien, whose regenerative blood was used to bring Coulson back to life, in a facility that self-destructed when Coulson’s team set foot inside.

“I know that as a Marvel fan, when I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy, there was a very similar blue fellow named Ronan the Accuser [Lee Pace],” Gregg recently told EW for our Fall TV Preview issue. “I thought, ‘Oh, perhaps this looks Kree.'”

It should come as no surprise then that Gregg was very punny after EW inquired into the blue alien on Tuesday night. “That’s amazing that you picked up on that,” he said. “That’s un-kree-lievable.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
