ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is reportedly going to receive a season 5 renewal.Agents of S.H.I.E.L.Dhas been doing quite well for itself. The show may focus on the behind-the-scenes heroes of the Marvel world, but being the studio’s only current primetime venture has given it a pretty big spotlight.

Agents follows the adventures of characters who work for secret intelligence organization S.H.I.E.L.D. The show started off as a spinoff of the MCU but has since grown into its own. Agents both maintains continuity with the MCU and continues to break new ground exploring ideas and characters that have yet to make it to the big screen. Season 4 saw the introduction of Marvel comics mainstays like Ghost Rider, LMDs (life model decoys which are basically androids), and the creation of the digital alternate reality The Framework.

Fans who are eager to see what other Marvel concepts Agents will bring to the table will be pleased to hear that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is reportedly being renewed for a fifth season. Nellie Andreeva at Deadline said Agents, “which serves as a solid marketing platform for the Disney-owned Marvel, also is getting renewed I hear.” To be clear, the only shows that ABC has officially renewed are Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder and half hour comedy The Middle. However, fans should not be too worried.

An official announcement from ABC will likely come along soon with the network’s upfronts presentation scheduled for mid-May given the host of other reasons the network has for renewing. ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said earlier this year that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 is its “strongest” creatively, and is hoping to air season 5 alongside the network’s upcoming Inhumans miniseries. Critics agree with Dungey about the creative aspect as season 4 currently stands at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

On top of this, President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has expressed interest in crossing over Marvel TV and movies at some point in the future, and Inhumans showrunner Scott Buck hinted that his show (airing Fall) may share a connection with Agents.

Though fans may have had some reason to worry given Agents’ ratings drop this season (the fourth episode reportedly had the lowest ratings of the series), the series continues to be a steady draw for ABC even if it’s not a powerhouse. There’s also been a definite focus on expanding Marvel TV, especially on Netflix, with the addition of The Punisher, while other ABC series Agent Carter was cancelled and Marvel’s Most Wanted wasn’t picked up.

Even though this is not a confirmed renewal, given the source, the above mentioned reasons and the fact the show has seen an increase in popularity it seems safe to rejoice. The second to last episode of Agents airs this Tuesday, so if you’re still waiting on an official announcement, expect it soon.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. May ‘Potentially Affect’ Inhumans

Inhumans-and-Agents-of-SHIELD-Quake.jpg

Marvel’s Inhumans may have ties to fellow ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Marvel’s long delayed Inhumans is finally coming together. The project was originally slated as an Inhumans movie, with a release date of summer 2019. After some changes, the Inhumans are headed to ABC as an eight-episode series, the first two episodes of which will be released in IMAX.

For those who don’t know, the Inhumans are a species of human-alien hybrids that receive superpowers after undergoing a process called Terrigenesis. They have been a part of Marvel comics since 1965. They have also been a part of Marvel Television since debuting, in a very major way, in season 2 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There are several Inhuman characters currently on the show including series regular Chloe Bennet who plays Inhuman Daisy Johnson. So, will Inhumans and Agents be connected?

Inhumans showrunner Scott Buck (Iron Fist), said in an interview with EW, “We all inhabit the same universe, so things that have happened on S.H.I.E.L.D. will potentially affect our show as well.” For Marvel TV fans this would be a new development. The Marvel Netflix shows have seen some overlap, with shared characters like Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) appearing in all Netflix projects. This summer will see crossover series The Defenders cementing that connection. However, Agents usually appears to be left out in the cold, star Bennet has even said that rest of Marvel “doesn’t acknowledge our show at all.

Marvel-MCU-Agents-of-SHIELD-Inhumans.jpg

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. seems closely tied to the MCU and maintains continuity with the films. Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson appeared in the first phase of Marvel films including The Avengers. The show’s plot was heavily affected by Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Samuel L. Jackson appeared in the show as Nick Fury and so on. But this all comes off as a one-way street as events in the show have not been mentioned in the film. Even large scale events that would affect the shared universe – such as many characters gaining superpowers due to being Inhumans – hasn’t even come up in the form of an MCU easter egg.

Being a proven part of the rest of the Marvel world would be a pretty big deal for Agents at this point. Airing on the same network and dealing with shared subject matter, it seems logical for the shows to connect in some way, even if they largely remain independent. Given Buck’s statement it would be safe to assume that there will be some mention of what’s happening in the Marvel world at large. But this doesn’t necessarily mean as much as fans would like.

Buck did also say in the interview that Inhumans is meant to stand on it’s own. He describes it as a serialized family drama, and it’s taking place within the technologically advanced Inhuman city of Attilan. Both of these things point to a pretty insular show. If there is any overlap it may be something as small as a mention of the ‘Inhuman situation’ beyond Attilan in the same way the NYC based Netflix shows keep vaguely referring to Manhattan’s Avengers-based destruction as “the incident.” Even so, that would be a sign that yes, Inhumans and Agents are part of the Marvel world at large.

They definitely need to acknowledge AoS in "Inhumans" and vice versa. Likewise, the MCU should have referenced AoS in Civil War at least, considering the focus on the sokiva accords in the movie and multiple mentions in AoS. Also, considering Hive's plan to turn basically everyone into an Inhuman, you would think that would be on the Avengers radar.

I'm going to need this to continue... it's the only thing I even watch on ABC anymore besides college football and basketball. They would be idiots to cancel it.. especially since they are bringing the inhumans next season. They need a Marvel Hour on ABC.

Because I just don't see Cloak and Dagger working for me on Freeform and they can't lose any thunder to Fox Xmen show.. Even though I wish this show was on FX.

I'm gonna give freeform a chance...since it isn't aimed for me anyway.

I'm still pissed about Agent Carter...I think a crossover of some sort with Agents would have saved it.

I really hope fox marvel and Disney continue to find a common space afterm the success of Legion.

Cause there is absolutely no downside.

I'm what way and which part... without going into spoilers on the major reveal?

The major reveal itself. What is the purpose for the appearance? I guess that will be answered, but at this time, it seems like the show runners put the reveal in for fan service. I can appreciate the move, but, I need some back story for it to make sense.

It makes sense though.... has always had a internal fire to punish those who abused the Darkhold and Aida clearly is going to use the darkhold to remake the world.... Makes sense for him to now make an appearance.

Plus he is clearly the only one capable of stopping her.
