Agents of SHIELD Season 6 Promotes Jeff Ward to Series Regular
Deke.jpg

Jeff Ward is being given a larger role for season 6 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and has been promoted to a series regular. The biggest new addition to Marvel's ABC show for the fifth season was Ward as Deke Shaw. He was introduced during the first half of the season that was set in space and in the future, but he managed to make his way to the present day. Along the way, fan theories were confirmed as he was revealed to be the descendant of Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).

Ward was just a recurring star on the show in the last season and the final episode left his future up in the air. With the fifth season set around changing the future, not knowing where he was when the finale came to a close made him one of season 6's biggest questions. Not only will he be back, but he will return in a bigger capacity.

Marvel has confirmed that Jeff Ward has been promoted to a series regular for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s season 6. There's no word yet on how he will return, but the capacity confirms that a future where he is still born is possible.

The addition of Ward in season 5 brought another fish-out-of-water element to the season. While he was the one helping the team when they were out of time, he got to then experience the wonder of Earth once he was transported to the present day. Deke was also a constant source of comedy for the show and was even set up as a potential love interest for Daisy (Chloe Bennet). That could be explored further with him coming back officially.

This does, however, raise questions over what actually transpired in season 5. Deke was born in the future where Earth exploded and humanity became enslaved by the Kree. Audiences were led to believe that those events were prevented and that the team truly had changed the future. S.H.I.E.L.D. could explain this all away through some classic FitzSimmons science, but it is still a question nonetheless.

Ward’s promotion to series regular puts him in the same status as Bennet, De Caestecker, Henstridge, Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May), Henry Simmons (Mack), and Natalia Cordova-Buckley (Yo-Yo). Now, fans just need to know what happens to Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson. With the season 6 currently filming, we will hopefully get more answers and updates on S.H.I.E.L.D. sooner rather than later.

If it’s the last season, they need to put the characters into the MCU movies and finally connect the show to the movies.

They have done a piss poor job of connecting the two.

They tied the end of last season with Infintiy War, but left off with what was going down in NYC.

ABC is Getting Marvel TV Show About Female Superheroes From Wonder Woman Writer

ADVERTISING

ABC is now developing a new female-led Marvel TV series. As part of Disney's umbrella, ABC received the first crack at getting an MCU connected program on the small screen. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was launched in 2013 and is currently in production on its sixth season, due out next summer. The network also gave Hayley Atwell another chance to play Peggy Carter in Agent Carter, before they canceled it after just two seasons. They even partnered up with IMAX to bring Inhumans to life, but that too fell by the wayside.

With just Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC's slate, the network has been exploring options for additional Marvel content. This comes as other services like Netflix, Hulu, and ABC's sister network Freeform have all launched shows of their own. After developing a few ideas, it looks like ABC is committing to one focused on multiple female heroes.

Related: No New Marvel/ABC Shows Moving Forward This Year

Deadline reports ABC has given a production commitment to a new series from Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg. The show will be an hourlong drama starring female Marvel characters with superpowers. There's currently no other known details about the show, but Deadline reports it will star "lesser-known Marvel characters."

ABC has been very female-focused with their Marvel properties, so developing a new Marvel show with a female ensemble fits nicely with what they've established. Although there is no current timeline for the series, ABC's interest in launching a new Marvel property could put this on a fast-track depending on what stage in development the series is in. If everything goes smoothly, the series could debut next fall after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s sixth season concludes.

ADVERTISING
The question at the forefront of the mind's of all Marvel fans is what qualifies characters as "lesser-known" that will be featured. The likes of Kamala Khan, She-Hulk, Kate Bishop, or America Chavez are all well-known to the comic community, but not necessarily to the general population. Are any of them in contention to star in this mystery series or are Heinberg and ABC diving even deeper into the depths of Marvel mythology to find suitable leads. Depending on what happens with S.H.I.E.L.D., this new series could present itself as an opportunity to keep Quake (Chloe Bennet) and Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) around in a new format, or even bring back Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki).

ADVERTISING
The timing of this news is worth mentioning too, as reports recently surfaced that Marvel Studios is developing several live-action limited series for Disney's streaming service. Those shows will be produced by Kevin Feige, while this new series for ABC will still be overseen by Jeph Loeb and Marvel TV. Hopefully, more news on this new series will arrive soon, but for now, ABC is finally making moves for new Marvel properties.

MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD RENEWED FOR SEASON 7

Share.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s sixth season will air in summer 2019.
BY ADAM BANKHURST Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been renewed for a seventh season, months before its sixth season airs in the summer of 2019.

Announced by Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, season seven will follow an abbreviated sixth season that will run for 13 episodes, instead of the 22-episode run that all previous five seasons have had.

Dungey, when previously speaking about the shortened season, said that "by putting it in the summer, we’re going to be able to ‘super-serve’ the fan base that loves that show and hopefully give it an opportunity to continue on longer than we would if it was [scheduled] in-season."

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, has averaged a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and continues to see success in the international market.

Its season 5 finale, The End, aired back in May and we praised the episode and said that it "delivered some really powerful moments."

We've also discussed if and how the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season five finale tackled the events that occurred in Avengers: Infinity War, especially after it was confirmed that the show would "have stuff in the background periodically that references and ties into whats going on with Avengers: Infinity War."

While it appears Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will live on for at least one more season, ABC cancelled Marvel's Inhumans earlier this year after it averaged a 0.6 rating and a viewer count of 2.65 million.

No Coulson? No problem!

ABC announced Friday that it has picked up Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a seventh season — several months before the premiere of season 6.

image

Jennifer Clasen/ABC
Season 5 of the superhero spy series, which features a smattering of characters and concepts from Marvel comics along with a bevy of original ones, ended in the spring with the apparent death of longtime team leader Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). At the time, executive producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jeffrey Bell told EW they had written the season 5 finale as a potential series finale, fearing that they might not get renewed; the episode was even titled “The End.” But just as Coulson defied his death at the hands of Loki in The Avengers, so too has his show escaped its own end with unexpected longevity.

Although anything’s possible when talking about comic book characters, Gregg told EW he was pretty sure that Coulson’s story had come to an end. Indeed, he is not listed among the season 7 ensemble alongside cast members Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, and Jeff Ward.

Gregg will be returning to the show in another capacity, however, as the director of the season 6 premiere episode. Plus, Gregg will be starring as a younger version of Coulson in March’s Captain Marvel movie, which is set in the ’90s. But in the present day, it looks like his trusted team will have to fly without him.

Finally,ABC seen the light, that network been trying to get rid of it since the beginning.....:smh::smh::smh:

I still dont like the idea of it being shown during the summer and having lesser episodes....:hmm:

At least we can have some confidence that this show will get a true ending and not some BS dark matter cliffhanger crap...

My guess is that ABc/Disney is preparing this to be used to launch some of the marvel shit for the streaming channel. Hopefully... maybe.. they could bring back Agent Carter.

Agent Carter would have been good if they had did the Arnim Zola storyline instead of what they did with that black juice stuff or whatever that was.

Agents of SHIELD Season 7 Likely to End Series
It looks like Agents of SHIELD season 7 will be the end for Phil Coulson and the gang.

While it was somewhat of a surprise when Agents of SHIELD was renewed for a sixth season by ABC -- the show has always struggled with its ratings, even while the fan and critical response has only gotten better from year to year -- the real shocker came when the network quickly tacked an additional set of shows -- Season 7 -- onto the schedule as well.

But with Season 6 set to roll out this spring and the seventh starting to shoot, star Clark Gregg told us that a seven-year run is likely going to be it for the Marvel series.

“That's the word I've heard,” said Gregg when we spoke with him recently at the press junket for Captain Marvel. “The announcement I read was, two more seasons, six and seven.”

Although Gregg added that he “really doesn’t know much about” Season 7 just yet, he enthused that he’s “excited” for viewers to check out Season 6. “I can't wait for people to see Season 6,” he told us. “People who have been on the journey with me and with Phil Coulson are going to get something very, very different.”

Of course, Marvel fans will get to see Gregg as Coulson even earlier, starting on March 8 when Captain Marvel hits theater screens. He’s playing a younger version of the character in the film, back in the days when he was a new S.H.I.E.L.D. operative and just starting to work for Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) long before either of them had heard of Iron Man or the Avengers.

Should Season 7 indeed be the end of the line for Agents of SHIELD, would Gregg be interested in having the character return again to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the big screen? “I feel so grateful for the journey that I've had, that I'm hesitant to ask for anything,” he said thoughtfully. “I'll never say no when the Marvel Universe calls up. I feel very grateful for what I've done.”

Captain Marvel is out March 8, while Agents of SHIELD season 6 premieres on ABC in May.
