Maybe he can make his primary state Texas or Florida, but you are working in Cali, NY, AZ etc you are paying taxes there. period

I travel for work, and when I work out of ports in Texas, Florida, Miss or Alabama, I have to file. He's going to have way more expenses, but there is only so much you can write off. I wonder if you bring your manager, trainer etc on the road with you how that works state to state?

Isn't Cali's tax rate high as well? I know, it's the double taxation that's a killer.

"The people im talking to...." Shut up bitch. If them people anything like the people you were talking to and getting your Kawhi info from then they are bigger idiots than you and should be soundly ignored.

Cris Carter is the most annoying asshole on sports talk TV.

I cant watch that show because of him...

I tried to watch it this morning and I just couldn't.

KD comes back when he comes back. I hope he takes two years off if he doesn't feel right.

this nigga whitlock sounds stupid lol

@ the end of the day NO did NOT have to trade AD

but they did cuz they knew they’d get nothing if he walked

he actually did them a favor letting them know his intentions

OKC did NOT have to trade PG

he has 3 years left on his contract

they didn’t have to budge but they did cuz they knew they weren’t serious about winning now

he did them a favor by allowing them to start the rebuilding process earlier

quite a few teams are in a position where they offered players HUGE contracts only to be interested in trading/wanting to trade them (conley...CP3...westbrook...wall)

owners continue to be their own worst enemies but the blame always falls on the players

the days of players being held hostage on teams run by inept owners who are not dedicated to winning are over

I am VERY CURIOUS....

Has anyone discussed how his contract would be effected by being taxed in 2 countries?

It cost him big time. He is supposed to actually make more money in Cali with the high ass taxes there.

Toronto is not a bad city but that tax thing seemingly kills it.

I guess you gotta be like Brock Lesnar and just want to live on compound by yourself to be able to deal with the taxes.

(ETA) then again Brock only works like 10 days a year.

I've thought for a while that teams should be able to sign player to contracts that guarantee a certain post-tax income.

i.e. Toronto can pay 11% more than LA to offset tax implications. If a player is traded, their pre-tax salary is adjusted accordingly to produce the same post-tax revenue.

It's stupid that teams in, say, Texas have an advantage. A state investing in schools or other programs should not be a reason star players don't sign there. Everybody always says they want less politics in sports-- the worst manifestation of that is offseason state tax talk.

Just make the bottom line the same across the board.

Why? I would think this would go under the radar... I have no idea the dollar amount Kawhi signed for, I just know it was a max deal. I would think that's how it would be reported. "Kawhi Leonard signed a 3 year contract worth $121 with the Toronto Raptors." I'm sure NBA insiders would mention that Toronto was actually paying $141 million (making numbers up here) but I don't see any problem because 1) most fans don't look that deeply at the boring outside the lines part of the game and 2) every franchise would have equal purchasing power-- this doesn't advantage anyone, it levels the playing field.

Man skip ain’t that bad

He plays his role as the super fan

That all he is super fan

It what makes him popular
But he's not though. He's playing a fake role. He's a fake Cowboy fan because he's built his career on arguing against SAS with that shit. What's frustrating is that is what all of these shows have become. There was a time when analysts use to hide their fandom and their bias. This nigga Skip straight up plays into it. Shit is crazy.

I don't think I'm the only one... How else could Commissioner Silver be thinking of ensuring "an appropriate balance of power between... markets that are perceived as being more attractive than others [on] tax issues?"

When this is the norm in five years, remember where you heard it first.

NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER ADDRESSES TRADE DEMANDS, TAMPERING, AMONG OTHER TOPICS

“I think at the end of the day, it’s positive for the league,” Silver said. “I will say, though, I’m mindful of this notion of balance of power, and I think it applies in many different ways. An appropriate balance of power between the teams and the players, an appropriate balance of power I’d say among all our 30 teams, big markets, small markets, some markets that are perceived as being more attractive than others, tax issues, climate issues. At the end of the day, you want to make sure you have a league where every team is in a position to compete.

Man

Nigga ass and he not paying taxes accordingly?

Foh

The players would be paying taxes fairly-- They'd actually be paying more in taxes. This idea is actually a burden on the owners in cities like Toronto because, at the end of the day, it means they have to pay more to attract the best of the best. I think they'd gladly sign up for that because it's better to have the option of paying an extra $10 million or whatever rather than always being at a disadvantage because their money is worth less than that of other owners.

All you need to do is balance the max contracts per state. That would even the playing field but even with that your money will still go much longer in mid states compared with the coasts.

What do you mean by balance? Are you also saying to make them the same post-tax or do you mean something different?

Texas and Florida have no state tax so 41 games plus the ones you play against other Texas and Florida teams have no state tax. Federal is the same everywhere. So you would make the Max in Florida and Texas lower to offset it. Other states would be higher but the after tax would be the same.

Now there would still be a benefit for smaller states cause the cost of food and housing would be cheaper. If you're from a small town you might not mind Atlanta, Charlotte, OKC etc as a destination. If you like the big city, your motivation is the nightlife etc. National talents with social media can still make $$ on endorsements. I recall John Elway owning car dealerships and Nolan Ryan owning banks and ranches. Small markets have different opportunities as well.

Yea in the 80’s they would hide it. Every since I been watching espn you could tell who was a fan of certain team. I remember watching Stew Scott big up UNC all the time. That’s what made them relatable and not robots.

Why?

The max would stay the same, but in Cali the Max would equal the same post tax as Florida. So you might have a 4 year 190 in Cali and a 4 year 170 in Florida and maybe 4 year 195 in NYC and a 4 year 210 in Canada. After taxes they would all essentially be the same $ as the Florida or Texas contract

You're comparing Atlanta to Charlotte and OKC?

Have you ever been to Atlanta?

Atlanta is one of the top five destinations in the country for black football and basketball players.

Gotcha. We're on the same page.

I've been wanting this ever since LeBron and Bosh "took less money" to play in Miami. The NBA's failure to account for state taxes is the biggest flaw in having a system predicated on allowing teams to pay more to keep their own talent.

Then how come no top players ever seem to go there? I'm talking about taxes. I've been to Atlanta a lot back in the day and it's cool, but I'd rather be in LA, NYC or the Bay.

Riddle me this, if you had your choice between Houston or Atlanta and being in Houston means you keep an additional 10 mil a year which one would you pick? Take away the tax breaks and you might get a top 10 player in Atlanta that wasn't drafted there.
