A British Army sergeant who longed to be with his Tinder lover tried to murder his wife by dismantling her parachute, causing her to plummet 4,000 feet to the ground, prosecutors charged.
Emile Cilliers’ wife Victoria survived the plunge in 2015, but broke her pelvis, ribs and vertebrae,
The Guardianreported.
It was Emile’s second unsuccessful attempt at killing Victoria, 40.
The 37-year-old was quickly arrested and is on trial for murder.
A week earlier, Emile allegedly tried to kill his wife by loosening the valve to a gas pipe in their home, the court heard.
Prosecutors said that Emile was $30,000 in debt and would have received his wife’s $159,000 life insurance policy had his maneuver been successful.
Cilliers denied both counts of attempted murder, The Guardian reported.
While married to Victoria, Emile had started a relationship with Stefanie Goller, whom he had met through the dating app Tinder in 2014.
He was also allegedly still sleeping with his former wife, Carly Cilliers.
The court heard that Emile lied to Goller, saying that he had left Victoria and that he was not the father of the couple’s second child together.
“I will sacrifice and give up so much for you,” Emile told Goller.
“I’m not going to lose you. You have no idea how much you mean to me. I have a massive urge to be with you. I feel I need you more than ever. I mega adore you,” Emile said in another message to his Tinder date.
Emile left his home the night he loosened the gas pipe in the family’s kitchen, prosecutors said.
When Victoria smelled gas, she messaged her husband and jokingly said, “Are you trying to kill me?”
Victoria told Emile that she sent the playful message after she had read magazine stories of husbands killing their wives.
Prosecutors said that when Emile realized his wife was still alive, he hatched a backup plan.
“You want to go jump this weekend?” he said in a text.
A prosecutor said that Victoria’s reply made the whole situation even more sad.
“Would love to,” she wrote.
Responders to the scene said it was a miracle that Victoria survived the fall.
