REPORTERS ATTACKED, ROBBED AT GUNPOINT IN FERGUSON


Four freelance reporters were robbed at gunpoint on Tuesday night around 8 p.m., when they attempted to shoot video at the Canfield Drive memorial, a street off of West Florissant Avenue, the Daily Riverfront Times reports.

Emily Molli, a freelancer filing for the Chinese Xinhua News Agency, told Daily RFT she was standing behind her cameraman Marcus DiPaola while he was filming. She saw a large group of armed young men wearing masks walking towards them.

"They got closer and then I heard them say, 'Turn the camera off, turn the camera off," Molli told Daily RFT. "They came sort of at us and tried to grab the camera."

The reporters began to walk to their car, but Molli and DiPaola said the men continued to follow them, yelling. Although they made it inside their Prius, the group caught up to them and started smashing the car windows.

"One guy pulled [the car door] back open, got a gun out of his backpack and pointed it at my head. He tells me to get out of the car and give me the keys," said Molli. "That's what I did."


"Fifteen to twenty males followed us with guns and hammers out," confirmed DiPaola. "Every single one of them had masks on."

DiPaola, Molli, and their colleagues escaped on foot, telling the Daily RFT that a church group, who just happened to be in the neighborhood delivering Thanksgiving turkeys, helped the journalists and took them to a police checkpoint.

Robberies and assaults on journalists covering the Ferguson riots also happened during the August violence that erupted after the shooting of Michael Brown. Reporters have been pelted with rocks, and robbery attempts on photojournalists' equipment have happened. During the August riots, a small video camera was stolen out of the hands of a Breitbart News reporter by an individual who first attempted to steal a cell phone.

Backstoppers Says Nonprofit Isn’t Raising Money for Darren Wilson

ST. LOUIS (KMOX/AP) - BackStoppers is trying to dispel social media rumors that they have been fundraising in support of Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson, who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Ron Battelle, executive director of BackStoppers, says the accusations are completely untrue.

“We’re not involved in any fundraising or benefiting from any fundraising relative to the Ferguson matter at all,” he says.

The St. Louis nonprofit provides assistance to families of emergency workers who die in the line of duty.

Backstoppers released a statement on Monday dispelling reports on social media, saying the organization is not participating in, and has not benefited from, any fundraising to support Ferguson officer Darren Wilson. Wilson remains on paid administrative leave while a state grand jury and the Justice Department continue investigations into the Aug. 9 shooting.

Battelle tells KMOX that if the organization receives any funds related to the Ferguson matter, the money would be sent back.

Man, 20, dies amid Ferguson protests

FERGUSON, Mo. — Amid the rubble and ashes of a city convulsed in anger over the death of Michael Brown, a different family stood in shock and grief over the death of another young black man: DeAndre Joshua, 20.

At 9 a.m. Tuesday, a resident of an apartment complex spotted Joshua's body inside a parked car, a white Pontiac Grand Prix, near Canfield Green Apartments, the same complex where Ferguson Police officer Darren Wilson shot Brown on Aug. 9. Blood-soaked shattered glass lay in a pile on the ground beside the car.

Family members said Joshua's death is tied to the protests that consumed Ferguson after St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch revealed the grand jury's decision not to indict Wilson. But family members said they did not know specifically how he died.

"I'm still stunned because he never had any problems. He was a good kid," relative Brian Joshua, 45 said, as other family members sobbed. "It's like somebody just hit us with a brick."

DeAndre Joshua graduated from high school and worked at Walmart, he said.

Walmart said Joshua had worked at Walmart as a stocker for more than a year.

"We are deeply saddened to learn the news that one of our Walmart family members tragically lost his life," Dacona Smith, senior vice president for operations at Walmart, said.

As police towed Joshua's car, his grandmother Renita Towns said she had little hope that police would investigate and learn the cause of her grandson's death.

"Police don't care — he's black," Towns said.
