R.I.P. to Maurice White, he and Earth Wind & Fire were part of my childhood. I know he has been sick for years, I
was always checking to see how he was doing, hoping he had one more album in him. He will be truly missed.
I'm Sad this morning, as with all great musical talent, he is no longer with us, but he will live forever in song.

HNIC

Maurice White, co-founder and front man of the iconic Earth, Wind & Fire died in his sleep in Los Angeles this morning, his brother Verdine White told the press. White was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the early 1990s, and though he remained involved in the group throughout the rest of his life, he had not toured with them since 1994.

White founded Earth, Wind & Fire with Verdine in 1969. The band featured vocals from the brothers, a distinctive falsetto from Philip Bailey, and a sound that blended of jazz, funk, gospel, soul, and rock. The group hit it big in the 1970s with the album That’s the Way of the World (1975), earning its first Number One hit with “Shining Star.” Later hits included “September,” “Let’s Groove,” and a cover of the Beatles’ “Got to Get You Into My Life.”

White was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1941 and grew up singing in his church’s gospel choir. He moved to Chicago in the 1960s to study music and worked as a session drummer there before traveling to Los Angeles with his and his brother’s band, the Salty Peppers. In 1971, after leaving behind most of the other members, the Whites renamed their band Earth, Wind & Fire. When EWF's success cooled in the 1980s, Maurice pursued a side career as a producer, working with artists such as Cher, Barbara Streisand, the Emotions, and Neil Diamond. He released a solo album in 1985.

Earth, Wind & Fire also appeared in the 1978 film Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, performed at the White House and made an appearance during the Super Bowl. In 2000, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, White was recognizedby his band mates and collaborators as the soul of the group, its primary songwriter and “pace setter.” “I think Earth, Wind & Fire came out of a need, a dual need,” White said in a 1982 interview. “A need for myself as an individual to realize my total potential, in a sense of speaking. And also, from another sense, it came from a part of me wanting to render itself to humanity.”

I grew up to the sounds of these albums playing on my parent's record players. As a youngin' their mystical album covers always fascinated me. I was shocked to see how well Phillip Bailey covered Maurice's vocal parts in their most recent performances over the years.

RIP to a legendary Brother.

Master told me one day
I'd find peace in every way,
but in search for the clue
wrong things I was bound to do

Keep my head to the sky
for the clouds to tell me why
As I grew with strenght
Master kept me as I repent

Keep your head to the sky
Keep your head to the sky

Gave me the will to be free
purpose to live is reality
Found myself never alone
changes come to make me strong

Step right up, be a man
You need faith to understand
so we're saying for you to hear
Keep your head in faith's atmosphere...

Keep your head to the sky
Keep your head to the sky

I just got home to find out that the leader and founder of my all-time favorite band has just passed! R.I.P. Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire. Anyone that knows my musical tastes knows that I have been borderline obsessed with them from the beginning! I actually got a chance to meet my idol in 1994. My wife and I were walking on 34th St, by the Empire State Building when I saw them (Maurice and Verdine) crossing the street in front of us. I whispered to my wife, " you know who that is?" And she was like, "I don't know, who?" I said "That's Maurice and Verdine White from E,W & F". She said, Well, go up there and introduce yourself". But i couldn't do it, they weren't bringing attention to themselves and I didn't want to invade their privacy. But my wife said, "you know I'm bold!" and she grabbed my 5 year old son's hand and walked upto them and introduced herself and my son to 2 of my idols! With the ice broken, I approached them and Maurice said to me,"Ah, so you're the fan!". I told him how I owned every piece of music they ever put out and I covered my bedroom walls with their album covers. I know all the lyrics to all of the songs. We stood on the corner of 34th St and 5th Ave for about 30 minutes, talking about their music and the meaning behind their lyrics, while Verdine played with my son. Two of the most genuinely nice people I've ever met. I know that they really appreciate their fans by the time they spent with us. Maurice thanked me for my service as a member of NYPD, shook my hand, gave me and my family hugs and autographs, then went on their way. One of the greatest moments of my life. Thank you, Maurice White, for the music, the sense of spirituality and peace you represented and giving me an idol that I could love and respect.
