Samiel Asghedom, left, Dawit Asghedom, Ermias Asghedom, a.k.a. Nipsey Hussle, and Adam Andebrhan shortly before the Grammys in 2019. (Asghedom family handout / Asghedom family handout)

The caller on the other end of Samiel Asghedom’s phone was panicked but clear. His younger brother — known to the world as rapper Nipsey Hussle, but to Samiel as just Nips — had been shot.

It was Sunday afternoon — hours before hundreds of mourners would descend on South Los Angeles to remember a man known as much for his boastful music as for his humble contributions to his community. And days before a man named Eric Holder would be charged with murder.

Samiel jumped into his car parked outside of his grandmother’s house. He ignored the red lights as he raced down Slauson Avenue — the South Los Angeles street that he and Nips were working to uplift. He arrived at the Marathon Clothing store precious minutes after a gunman fired multiple rounds into Nips, but before the paramedics pulled up. The time when life can precariously slip into death.

Blood stained the front of his brother’s shirt and a hole marked where a bullet entered his leg.

There’s no reason for him to still be breathing, Samiel thought.

But Nips was. Air rushed in and out of his nose — strong and loud.

Growing up in turf claimed by the Rollin’ 60s Crips gang, Samiel had seen death up close. Bullets, when they hit their target in the chest like the ones that hit Nips, were cruel and quick.

He’s meant to be alive, Samiel thought.

:::

On Wednesday, Samiel recounted his brother’s final moments to The Times. He says he is haunted most by the way the shooting happened.

They were best friends. He was by Nipsey’s side when he was selling T-shirts and CDs from his car as a teenager, there when he opened a clothing store in the strip mall where they use to hang in the parking lot, and there when he signed a record deal with a major label. Last Sunday was no exception.

Police say Nips, born Ermias Asghedom, was gunned down by Holder, a 29-year-old aspiring rapper. Video from a nearby security camera captured the brazen attack, which occurred in broad daylight. Footage has been circulating on social media. What it doesn’t show is Holder talking to Nips a few minutes earlier.

Holder was a familiar face in South L.A. Pictures on social media show him wearing the Crips-blue bandannas, but in recent years, he seems to have vanished.

He re-emerged at the Marathon Clothing store on Sunday. The two men talked, shook hands and Holder left.

Nips would pop up in and out of his store without notice, his brother and others said. Samiel worried about his safety, and urged him to stop hanging in the parking lot and come inside. Nips had a bodyguard, but he moved freely through his neighborhood and those of rival gangs without worry.

“Nip is sporadic,” Samiel said. “Nip gonna pull up and hop up out of the Jordan Downs projects, Nickerson Gardens, in any ‘hood in L.A., Compton, Watts — solo with $150,000 of jewelry on his neck and [an] $80,000 Rolex with no security. That’s why the people loved him.”

He straddled many worlds with ease. His cool demeanor and regular appearances at the store made him relatable.

Nips built his reputation in the street, saying in a 2014 interview with the YouTube channel Vlad TV that he had joined the Rollin’ 60s as a teenager. But over the years, he grew his street hustle into legitimate businesses, connecting with the larger community of Los Angeles and the world, including some cops and politicians His music echoed his environment, but it also spread his message of entrepreneurship and the importance of planning for long-term success.

That strip mall was a business model for the future of his ’hood and his second home.

Samiel hushed the crowd that had formed around his brother. Nips laid on his back with his head tilted to the side.

The 911 operator told him what to do. Samiel found the hard, flat spot on his brother’s chest, clasped his hands together and pushed forcibly down, hard, to keep Nips breathing.

“1, 2, 3, 4.”

When the 911 operator reached 20, the wail of an ambulance’s siren filled the air around the strip mall — a place the brothers said they had been arrested many times before after the sound of different sirens.

Paramedics inserted a tube down Nipsey’s throat, stuck an IV in his arm and then lifted him off the pavement onto a waiting stretcher.

A chilling scream erupted from somewhere in the crowd of those who had gathered to watch. A bullet pierced the back of Nipsey’s head.

For the first time, Samiel saw the gunshot wound on the back of his brother’s head. He started praying.

:::

The strip mall was the place where Nips and Samiel got their hair cut and ate burgers. It was where both brothers said cops regularly held raids.

Los Angeles police still patrol the area often and treat people suspiciously, Samiel said.

The Marathon Clothing store hired mostly felons because they often have a hard time finding work with a criminal record. Felons also are prohibited from carrying guns.

“Because of that, the man was able to shoot my brother, start running, realize nobody out there had a gun, stop, turn back around, walk up, shoot my brother two more times, start to run, realize nobody had a gun, nobody was responding, ran back up and shot my brother three more times, shoot him in the head and kicked him in the head and then ran off,” Samiel dissected.

“If somebody would’ve been there — if I would’ve been there — I would’ve shot back,” he said. “I just wish I would’ve been there.”

:::

The ambulance arrived at the hospital before Samiel got there. The doctor seemed to be avoiding him.

Samiel walked toward the ambulance and approached a paramedic.

“I know who he is,” the man said. “I’m a fan. I respect what he was doing in the community.”

“We tried our hardest,” Samiel recalls him saying.

Since then, Samiel has been trying to come to terms with what happened, but it’s hard to know who to trust. His brother’s death feels like an “execution.”

He wonders if the attack was a hit job or if Holder was simply jealous.

“It doesn’t make sense that somebody from the area, that just snuck up, and just talked to him and shook his hand minutes before,” Samiel said. “It’s mind-boggling.”

Samiel said he’s focused on preserving his brother’s legacy.

“He made something work in an area that was run-down, that people were scared to come to, and he turned it into a landmark,” he said. “All races. Different states. Many countries. They all come to Crenshaw and Slauson. He was truly the people’s champ.”

This shit has hit written all over it

No it doesn't.

This is no different than what happened John Lennon, Reagan, Versace, Freaky Tah, etc.

Also one possibility that I haven't heard is that maybe this dudes animosity towards Nipsey goes back years due to something between them and he finally saw an opportunity.

For example maybe Nipsey was a part of one of his people getting killed before he made it big and he took this opening to exact revenge. Happens all the time particularly between gangs.

Basically I'm saying there are countless possibilities with regards to motive so why not consider them all instead of forcing the conspiracy angles?

(I'm not addressing this to you necessarily but to those who are really pushing the conspiracy shit.)

Nah the dude he went to meet got hit as well along with his nephew and Nipsey and I think hes still hospitalized.

I'm interested in hearing their version of events since they were right by Nipsey and most likely witnessed both interactions with the shooter.

I be mentioning it because it should have been a wake up call for blacks. We embrace what whites started as though they are not our enemies. When the constitution was wrote it stated that the black man was one fifth of a man yet we act as though whites way of life is the only salvation there is and beginning of civilization. I might not be the only black working toward total separation. And I have yet to physically prove the right direction. But the reason why I mention it a lot is simply because it should have been a wake up call. Christianity has power in the black community but it is not based on a man being a man it is based on your life being controlled by someone else. People should have woke up to certain things. Same as 911 we know that thugs run America. And they are still in power and nothing is official unless they say it is official.
During Elijah time they told him a lot of the stuff you say is the truth but you keep saying the same thing over and over again. He told them that is because you have not caught on to the first things yet. ISLAM I-SELF-LORD-AND-MASTER ALLAH ARM-LEG-LEG-ARM-HEAD.
This passing on the same traditions and traps for each generation seems very repetitive to me. But anyway I am still working to overcome the world. I cannot protect anybody from the devil if I cannot protect myself. I still follow their laws because I am still working to overcome living under their laws.
So yea you right I mention it to much. And some of the reason was so shocking to me when I realized what has been going on. There is no way a grown man can tell another grown man what to do unless he controls him. Realizing America and the rest of the earth is under the same thing that was going on there. And to pass this on to generation after generation. Nobody that sees what is going on would raise their kids to pass it on. It is like plantation days only covered up with better illusions.
I guess it seems I should overlook some things until I make it as a free man to show the world but it is hard for me to keep quiet.

All I'm saying is that most times, when I see your avatar I automatically scan your post for the word "Jonestown" and then keep scrolling.

I appreciate your message, it just gets a bit monotonous. To each his own tho. No hate. All love bro.

No person wants to lay face down in that situation.

Myself and another poster mentioned him rolling over in this thread. If you look at the way he rolled over, it looked like he was paralyzed and couldn’t move his legs.

Not if it goes back years, or if it didn't directly involve the shooter.

However "hit" in the sense that you mean it is far more plausible/possible as opposed to a conspiracy theory.

I could see this being a hit orchestrated by a rival or over business.

No doubt but he wasn't there when he came back the second time and started shooting.

I'm just curious what he may have said before shooting which may give an indication of his motive.

Except to me he wouldn't have kept running and coming back if he was someone who would be hired to do a hit.

Also if it was a hit whoever hired him would have never allowed him to be taken into custody with all this attention and would have made sure he was offed immediately to cover up IMO.

Everyone here would think somebody would of been strapped out there to fire back. I’m sure he did too. That’s what I’m seeing.

Its evident that tha police werent able to confiscate the cameras from the stores outside of that lil shopping plaza. Thats why TMZ was able to pay for those cause those are private property and not part of the crime scene. Im not goin into the whole conspiracy thang BUT when I see he lawyer up with ol boy from the OJ case it started to make my think. I thought this nicca was gonna get tha plain ol public defender. I dont know if that OJ dude is clout chasing for another big case or what but fuck that nicca.

But heres my final thang, where the fuck is the footage from Nipseys actual buildings? He has cameras all throughout that bitch. Lets see the shooter walk into the burger spot and grab his burger like its been said. Lets see him walk up to Nipsey a few times prior and see what the interaction was like. Lets see at the time he came around to shoot, was ANYONE purposely distracting Nipsey from not looking that way because I dont give a fuck if Im in front of a church...Im ALWAYS peepin my surroundings at ALL TIMES. Granted you cant look every where at the same time but you can tell from a niccas walk and body language if hes gonna be approaching you with a different energy than yall last few meets ups. Where the fuck is the footage from the alley where the car was parked? and lastly, why the fuck are yall keeping this supposedly "girl" driver hidden? This bitch picture should be lined up next to that shitty nicca. Why yall aint showing "her" charges or saying anything about her? Fuck that bitch....she get the same exact sentence but yet this mystery bitch doesnt exist for some reason.

Those are the thangs that make me question certain ish. I know how street politics go but I also know that on some regular every day ish, an avergae broke bum ass nicca like shitty isnt gonna get a top lawyer off rip, the driver doesnt get identified and charged and the closest camera angles are shown to the public as a "have you seen this man" type of when he was still at large.

No doubt, but IMO someone who is built to do a hit would just keep busting including at anyone who may have run out since he would essentially have the drop on them all.

Also someone hired to do a hit wouldn't be driven there by his chick in a car that would stand out or return to the scene with the same shit on in view of all of those cameras.

Dude seemed to be unsteady and unsure when shooting as opposed to a hitter who I would imagine would be more calm/precise and steady.

Police can confiscate all that shit with a warrant/probable cause.

TMZ is connected in that town and don't need a warrant since they are paying so its easier to get shit quicker than the law.

No doubt but its obvious they got a video from a store outside of that shopping area. They got zero footage from the actual shopping strip. Remember that all of Sunday, police NEVER released even a screenshot of this nicca shitty for the "publics" help to identify him. It wasn't until late Monday that they posted a picture that first hit IG by some random dude (which he later deleted). Ive been out here in Cali my whole life and seen killings every day on TV and they just went about this one hella different.

It's an active case and a high profile murder, the video footage isn't getting shown to the public so soon if ever.

Ok, I get that. But what about a still image of the suspect (who at the time wasnt identified) so peoplpe know who to look out for because they are "armed and dangerous". That NEVER happened. For example, remember when that lil youngster got stabbed by them 6-7 dudes in New York when they dragged him out the liquor store? Dawg, within an hour they had still images of each one of the suspects entering that store and outside of that store. They even showed the whole video. Granted, lil man wasn't famous BUT that ish had worldwide coverage and had celebs from all over screaming "justice for lil man" ( i forgot his name). Thats all im sayin, in Pac and Bigs case, it wasnt as high tech as it is now so I can understand a sketch artist having to draw something up but nowadays with all these HD cameras, to not at least show an image of dudes face or even a still image of the car that they were looking for is a lil suspect. Then to not even show the "driver" or even mention anything aside from "she turned herself in" is suspect. Who is this bitch?
