Quiet as kept sleep apnea saved my bro life... He was in the military and they was about to send him to Iraq for the third time... His ex-wife recognized he had some heavy snoring habits and told him to go get it checked out... He ended going to the hospital and finding out he had it... Cause of him being diagnosed with it the military pretty much said he couldn't go back to iraq... He said the squad he would've went with came under heavy fire and various dudes he know died.. As he said he would've more likely been 1 of them.. Thanks to sleep apnea he still here

We have a lot of dudes with Sleep Apnea in the military now, including myself. You can deploy but in the beginning of the increase in diagnosis orginallyt you could not. If I pressed it, I wouldn't have to go. I won't be going anywhere for my last little bit in the Army anyway, so it's just more a disability rating for me. Automatic 50% from the VA (about 1500 A MONTH non-taxable).

Sleep apnea will lead to heart disease which will take 5 to 10 years off your life. If you have a machine please use it.

I had it bad at one time and didn't know it. My wife was concerned about it but I had equated it to the long hours for a long stretch of Route Clearance Training before finally getting some downtime.

Thankfully it has subsided now but my Doc was still gonna give me a consultation for a Sleep Study.

I can remember waking up 30 times every night catching my breath like I had been running or swimming under water. By 1400, I was so fucking drowsy I couldn't stand it.:yawn::smh:

I have it and the machine helped me quite a bit. Had a coworker who never used his machine and died in his sleep. Definitely recommend cats get checked out and use your sleep apnea machine regularly if you have it. I sleep on my side and I've had no problems.

I loss my job earlier this year due to sleep apnea. I have a CPAP machine and it works most of the time but I still have issues once in awhile, while Im sleeping..I have to use my inhaler to make me breath.

I just saw my pulmonary doctor just two months ago and he ordered an echocardiogram and I took it on October 8th to see,how my heart is since I was born with a heart condition..

Im going to see my pediatric cardiologist on October 31st for my annual visit.

Sleep apnea is not fun at all because you'll be really tired during daytime.

Unlike, most people that have sleep apnea I don't snore at all...Im a very very quiet sleeper.

I must have gotten when I was rushed to the hospital, three years ago for bronchitis...

I had an at home sleep study done over the summer way better than my first study a few years back where I had fo go into a sleep center.
I have also done focus groups and market research on new mask and such. Man to listen to some of the people at those sturdiest man describe what they go through falling asleep on the toilet and at red lights and other stuff I’m like my doctor lied to me about this because I don’t do any of that shit.
The machine is fairly simple to use and to get used to. Depending on your mask certain sleeping positions may become difficult but it really isn’t that bad. My kids like it because when I put the mask on I sound like Vader.
I even have an app that shows me my sleep stats

Bruh why are you seeing a pediatric cardiologist or was that a typo.

On another note you would be amazed at how many babies and young kids have to be tested for apnea and use sleep therapy

Since,I was born and had two surgeries as a kid,Ive been seeing a pediatric cardiologist....I was seeing an adult cardiologist before my 3rd surgery, nine years but got switched over to pediatric cardiology.

There's alot of adults that go to a pediatric cardiologist but it has to be a special case like mines....

if you have sleep apnea, would it be obvious, or could you have it and not know about it ta all?

For me, I didn't know I had it, but I knew something was wrong. I would sleep for 12+ hours and still wake up tired. :smh: Sometimes I would need a nap after that. Also, there would be times where I would wake up out of breath. That shit would cause crazy dreams like being trapped under a car or being constricted by a snake.

If you don't feel refreshed after 7-8 hours of sleep, I'd definitely see a doctor and ask for a sleep study.

All the best to everyone that has sleep apnea. I've had some friends over the years that have shared their experiences dealing with same. Or others who use mouthguards at night ...

The mouth guards are a good alternative to a CPAP machine, although the downside is you might have to pay for it out of pocket depending on your insurance. Your dental insurance might view it as a health issue while your health insurance might view it as a dental issue.

Good point about the coverage. My mom's been using one the past year or two. She said it's been helpful in lessening the grinding of teeth & snoring.

Some questions for everyone ...

- Do you adhere to a pretty good sleep schedule during the week?

- Is your sleep schedule really inconsistent due to a busy lifestyle, alternating work schedule (shift work or overnight hours), etc?

- Ever experience sleep issues like insomnia?

- Do you try and "catch up" or recover sleep time on your days off, or on weekends?

I've been using a CPAP for at least 6 years now so I started in my 40's. I was having really bad headaches. I was having nausea and light sensitivity. They were usually happening on the weekend. They're known as let down migraines. I could feel them coming on and would feel the effect for a few days afterwards. I was seeing another dr. when he asked if I had sleep apnea and I I told him "no". He told me that he could guarantee that I had it just because of the shape of my windpipe. When I had my physical, the dr. asked me did I wake up at night to use the bathroom, I told him I did at least once every night. He said that could be because of sleep apnea. I wasn't falling into a deep sleep so a full bladder could be waking me up.

I went to see a specialist who did a sleep study and of course, I had a severe case. I think I stopped breathing at least 40 times an hour. As soon I got the CPAP, the headaches got much better. I haven't had nausea once since I started the CPAP. The very first night I felt better, they best rest I got in year. I sleep through the night, never waking up to use the bathroom.

This year, I took a trip with my wife and forgot my machine. I must have gotten up at least 6 times to use the bathroom. I was exhausted throughout the week.

One thing I don't like is I'm only eligible to get a new mask twice a year. I look forward to getting the new supplies. I have a ritual for when I get new supplies. I treat myself right. I have a good meal. I buy new underwear to sleep in. I get a new bath towel. This year I bought new bed sheets.

Man I'm glad to see brothers getting their health right. I have it too and everything yall mentioning from the nightmares to being tired/headaches the next day is accurate. I finally got a CPAP in July and it has changed my life. Before I got my CPAP i kept 3 BCs (crushed aspirin) on me daily. I would fall asleep anywhere. Yeah man....take care yourself!!

You partner may notice you stop breathing if they listen to you sleep and you could be fatigued even after waking up from what you thought was a good nights sleep. But to answer your question you could have it and not know it. Like I said in my post above they say I have it but my only symptom is snoring.

It's possible you may not know. The biggest myth about sleep apnea is it's for overweight people. It can certainly be hereditary. When the nurse came to my house to set up my machine she said her daughter has it and she's 5'10 120 lbs. A skinny rail. If you find yourself unusually tired throughout the day or very irritable for no reason that could be a sign. Definitely waking up in the middle of your sleep like your choking is a sure sign you have it. Schedule a sleep test. Can't hurt.
