Slutty Vegan shut down at Spelman and lead to a debate about black businesses taking advantage of their own damn kind

That's steep for anyone

I can go to Applebees and Chillis for $12 for some unhealthy beef, fries... [pause]
Yeah. It’s was around $25 plus tax so you hitting on $28 depending on what you get. What baffles me is know several people who own businesses and this is the main reason they don’t survive. Atlanta is notorious for fucking up great spots. I had a spot near the homey with killlllller wings. You got maybe 8 for $10, draft beers $8. Bruh! Fuck outta here! What’s it gone be? White spot by the crib, $10 wings $4 draft deals. You don’t wanna be a traitor but shit if I’m watching a game or two(, it’s too much. You want consistency. You want people coming back often. Those funky ass old Cac spots have $3 Budweiser or Miller Lights drafts and that shit stays open decades. One bathroom stall is always broken, but it’s packed in there because you can keep a beer in front of you the entire game. $8 draft you keep count.

The whole vegan fad is dying. It was all the hype a couple years ago, but you notice you see less social media posts about vegan lifestyle.

People are also starting to realize that all the processed ingredients in their fake meats is worse than actual real meat.

The company Beyond meat has been losing money and currently struggling.

Right, I've seen more fat vegans like people who eat processed meat being fat as well.

If people worrying about the animals and what could be in their meat, they can buy grass-fed meat.

Meat has nutrients and are healthy depending on what meat a person gets.

I get all my meat from the meat market.

Bodybuilder's eat meat and they said it helps muscle grow.

I'll try that vegan food, but i wouldn't even want to eat that shit everyday. I just don't see the cost worth it to buy vegan food.

So replace a black own restaurant with a non black own restaurant cool

I feel you.

$20 is a lot for a college kid, but to flip it to a non Black owned taco shop is counter productive. The solution can't be to give all the revenue to a non Black establishment. The administration has fucked up this situation from beginning to end.

We have to stop eating so much cheap food, even when we are young.

The Vegan spot should have cut the prices and changed the menu, we have to stop the entrepreneurial Black tax bullshit.

Shit taco bell not that cheap anymore either
It's nice to have vegan options but they should have developed a budget minded menu for students

I just ask not to tell me it tastes just like.

I had no problem trying it, I liked eggplant parm sandwiches back in my youth.

I liked it.... and I didn't pay 30 for a burger and fries cause fries came with the burger and I got an 8 dollar lemonade outside from a cat getting his hustle on.

My daughter was the college student who took me there . She had been many times and when I was outside standing in line there were quite a few college students in line.

So mofokrs need to stop making general statements about what college students have and what their budget is

Always in somebody else's pocket SMDH
She would have lines out many different locations so I know she had a big fanbase and them people had no problem paying the price..there’s a reason why she is a multi millionaire.. me personally I’m a carnivore so it’s not for me, but we not talking about me we talking about her customer base and the people that support it. I don’t like to hear that they shutting down her doors and I definitely don’t like the fact they replacing it with a non black company. Also don’t like how they complaining about the prices when they got high ass Starbucks as 1 of the food alternatives

Yep.. ive seen enough. Anyone defending this nonsense is a lunatic... And if the Black bourgeoisie uppity jack & jill high society young women of Spelman say them prices are too high then got dammit they are too fucking high.

They gave the young lady an opportunity in on-campus high value real estate and the students have spoken. I can assure you shes heard the complaints and had the chance to provide more affordable options. She didnt.

Wasn’t the white owned impossible burgers more expensive than regular burglars? Isn’t it always talked about how vegan food is more expensive than regular food? So I’m trying to fig out how did someone expect a vegan restaurant to be cheap especially a black 1?

Easy answer, she played herself:

Anything vegan is an unsustainable trend. Look at what happened with Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat. Both products caused a lot of commotion when introduced, only to completely disappear, lose customers, and fail to secure more funding. Pinky and her brand were more novelty, as she had an edgy personality and a trendy business name that warranted attention and curiosity. Beyond marketing appeal, product demand and marketplace positioning are crucial to success.

Here's the thing, people defending her on this thread overcharging college students trying to bring up starbucks to make it a race thing when it isn't. The price is crazy as fuck for a burger especially on campus where students can't afford it. All the owner had to do was make the prices affordable for college students by adjusting the menu with it being budget friendly and none of this mess would've spilled out in public of students complaining about her prices but the owner refused to listen and now we're here.

Also, with the economy being bad now since this orange CAC is in the white house as president again, students can't afford no $20 vegan burger.

Humans are omnivores and most Like to have some sort of carnivore dish on their plate.. the all out vegan consumer base is still small overall and with prices increasing in every product going mostly plant based can be costly.. also humans tend to not keep new habits/trends for long periods of time. Why the vegan thing pretty much died with the impossible/ beyond burger… Hell I bet you can pull up a thread where a bunch of nigs on here claimed they were gonna be eating them shits for now on and cut off animal products and now in 2025 have completely abandoned that idea

I'm semi-guilty of this.

I enjoy wholesome, healthy, green plates with fish and eggs. I tried veganism for about three years until I realized it's not sustainable and entails pitfalls that are often overlooked when adopting the diet. You learn about these issues after experiencing various adverse reactions. While it can be beneficial for short-term experiments to reduce or eliminate certain conditions, I would never recommend fully adopting it unless someone is a committed animal lover. Even then, I would still advise caution regarding veganism.

@kayanation and Djehuty Ma'atra were my biggest inspirations.

See like I said if you bring up the original vegan burgers, original vegan spot ideas, even vegan higher prices from yrs ago people didn’t mind it, claim they were in it for the long haul, called people haters if some questioned all vegan restaurants and their prices.. than yrs go by and everybody all of a sudden has amnesia of what their comments and thought process were yrs ago.. when she originally came out them burgers were like $14 and nobody had a problem with it got mad if you said them prices were high and would say what do you expect vegan food is more expensive cause it’s healthier and fresh.. now the tune completely changes yrs later for the same exact product. So it shows people ain’t faithful to the ideas they speak

Word on the street is that the food costs too much.
Food cost too much or black folk always want a homie discount? If chic fi la was on campus they would gladly pay those prices for that overrated chicken and waffle fries.. smh

When opening a business as a brother or sista don’t preface it with “blacked owned”… Start ya business and let it grow organically… folk don’t need to know a black man or women owns it as long as the products are good is all that should matter

That last paragraph is biz gold… when you say you’re black owned you sometimes limit your consumer base, cause racist cacs might stay away from supporting your biz, some black people who have stereotypical ideas about black establishments might not come to your establishment, also other ethnic groups may not come through for various reasons. But when you just present yourself as a biz or it look like some cac own it you will get much more overall support.. never limit your consumer base.. I know individuals that have made millions being black biz that weren’t put out there as black biz ness.. in fact some cater to white demographics and dug all in their pockets and zero cacs knew who the owners were.. had they known oh chances are their biz might not got lot of support

I hear ya, but no one is paying $15 for one Chic-fill-a sandwich. And no one would gladly pay $25 for a Chic-fil-a meal.

This isn't a situation where the white man's ice is colder, the prices were too fucking high for a college fast food restaurant..

$30 for a meal at a college restaurant is too much whether it's Black, white or gold and diamond owned.

Fam a chic fi la meal bout $17 if we keeping it 300… Now as for slutty vegan going on a college campus they should have gotten with the school admin to partial subsidize their location so the could offer. “Current students” a 40-50% on campus discount especially giving back to an hbcu as a black owned business also healthy food is not cheap

I Wonder could this be a new customer base.. according to the report she been there for 18 months.. if you do calculations that’s around sept 2023.. could it be thst the student class of 2023-2024 were more willing to spend than 2024-2025 class? 2023-2024 class that’s a complete diff senior class, probably several hundred diff under class men.. also pockets might been better and more spend friendly than this yr class.. also prices might have went up cause of inflation.. all the things to consider

Fam it’s really not that hard but folk make it hard for themselves always prefacing “black owned”. Once they say that they signed their business death certificate before it even got off the ground smh

I go to taco bell and get 2 potato tacos and add peppers and it's like 3.50 for 2 and I'm done or at times I get the 2.99 nachos and replace beef with chicken.

Black people always overcharged their own though...
Which is a issue, but then you have these CACs who would overcharge us but then they would charge less for their own kind.

That's why most black businesses don't last because of the crazy ass prices and let's not forget their food don't always be good either. While I'm willing to give them another chance coming back to hope they make it right along with better customer service.
