I don’t know how people got conned, but that 10,000 hour is a myth. Plus, how does one define mastery?

I read that outlier book I believe that where it comes from.

I think there is SOME truth in it

Repetition muscle memory practice discipline focus study all those things are essential and positive actions

But we cannot ignore natural gifts and proficiency and just plan enjoying what your doing too.

But to say EVERY PERSON who is exceptional at something DEFINITIVELY put in 10K hours first?

Nah.

There is definitely some truth to it. If a person put 10,000 hours in anything, then they will have experience.

But you’re right, there are the natural gifts and exceptions to the rule.

ok
find an example of a wildly successful talent/ wunderkind with poor work ethic / discipline

Define successful?

We have a laundry list of folk that trained hard for years and then achieved success and then fell of because of work ethic.

From JaMarcus on down

I think you misunderstood what I'm saying.

We have quite a few athletes who switched sports very very late in life and became all stars... Tim Duncan

I'm saying of course you gotta dedicate yourself...

I'm saying if you did 6K hours or 12k

There are of course other factors.

Resources, coaching, opportunity etc.

aptitude is not uniform...
success at minimum: peer evaluated as competent or better

any skill improves with time & experience
thats the 10k hours to mastery

the gifted only accentuate the rule -by any reason or advantage they just acquire skill sets faster than the average person

so when some through complacency or shift or priorities just stop learning / seeking to improve - they seem stagnant or "fall off"

Resources, coaching, opportunity etc.
just might mean more time needed - also athletes are the worst analogy to use

I keep thinking of my son's karate teacher. He loves saying that practice makes permanent, not perfect. If you doing somthing a lot and doing it wrong its still wrong.

So you saying there are NO examples YOU can think of of a person doing a particular thing for years and still being sub par at it?

The endeavor that comes to my mind is golf. I've played for decades and still haven't improved much since the first few seasons. I don't play as regular as I used to, but still just hit a wall and that's as good as it gets.

I can't imagine that
But also I personalize it
Cause I can't imagine me not being able to do anything that isn't directly tied to being a super genetic athletic freak
everytime its corruption via
patronage or nepotism

I still hold that it takes more than time to master a skill...

Guidance aptitude proficiency proper technique and instruction I think matter as well.

Which you both kinda agree with

I mean ok I am not a bgol expert but I spent about 10k hours on here

@4 Dimensional

Granted I ain't that smart but you think sone type of skill would result from all that time?

10,000 hours is approximately 417 days. If you devote 3 hours per day it would be approximately 3333 days or a little over 9 years.

Heck, yeah.

I became a better writer being on BGOL. Plus, there are other things you can pick up on as well. You get internet savvy.

I gotta retire from bgol...

There was an obvious typo in the thread title for years I never noticed.

In a thread discussion about intelligence and perception.

10K my ass.

Absolutely!! When I coach sports or mentor I also use an iteration of this saying.

"Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect. Perfect your actions slowly and the speed with manifest itself. "

Only if you are doing it correctly does this even matter

I see your point though.
