Sports Media World Reacts To Kirk Herbstreit Ripping ESPN Colleague

AUSTIN, TX - SEPTEMBER 21: ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit walks on the field before the game between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma State Cowboys at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on September 21, 2019 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Tim Warner/Getty Images)
ESPN media is typically a tight-knit family. Kirk Herbstreit of College GameDay must’ve not gotten the memo on Thursday.

Herbstreit absolutely blasted ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky today for his recent comments on Ohio State star Justin Fields. Orlovksy told Pat McAfee earlier this week he had heard there were concerns from NFL teams revolving Fields’ work ethic.

Orlovsky wasn’t necessarily the one making such an analysis. He was simply passing along the information. Regardless, that didn’t sit well with Herbstreit – or Ohio State fans, for that matter.

The College GameDay icon ripped Orlovksy in a new tweet.

“Absolutely ridiculous,” Herbstreit said in response to Orlovksy’s video in which he discusses Fields. “Even if YOU aren’t saying it… to pass that along from ‘people in the know’ is reckless and absurd!! Embarrassing!!”
Take a look.

ESPN can’t be happy with Herbstreit, or Orlovsky for that matter. Herbstreit is a foundational piece for ESPN. If he’s unhappy, you know something’s wrong.

Even if Dan Orlovsky’s sources are reliable, he probably shouldn’t have conveyed such information surrounding Justin Fields in such a nonchalant sort of way. Such information can greatly impact an NFL prospect’s life.

Fields is in play to be the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft, but he has some competition in Trey Lance and Mac Jones. The former Ohio State star can’t afford for there to be questions surrounding his work ethic. Such concerns are a bit bizarre to begin with.
Fields led the player movement in trying to persuade the Big Ten to change course and play a 2020 football season. It worked, and he then led the Buckeyes to the championship.

On the surface, it doesn’t appear Fields struggles with his work ethic. Orlovksy hears otherwise.

Different year, same shit. There's always an issue with the black QB having a work ethic, or maturity issue. They're trying to make him into Dwayne Haskins, who they tried to compare to JaMarcus Russell. But none of these white QBs ever get compared to any white flame outs before them.

Stephen A. Smith Says ESPN NBA List Hurts ESPN’s ‘Credibility’: TRAINA THOUGHTS
JIMMY TRAINA1 HOUR AGO
1. Thank you, Stephen A. Smith.
The ESPN talking head helped prove the point I was trying to make in Tuesday’s Traina Thoughts when I wrote the following about the network firing Paul Pierce:
There’s also a little bit of "Jordan Rules" going on here. If Pierce were a top ESPN talent, he would’ve been suspended. Remember when Tony Kornheiser criticized Hannah Storm’s wardrobe choices? That got Tony a suspension. One ESPN personality personally attacking another ESPN personality seems much worse than a guy doing an R-rated Instagram Live.
Right on cue, Stephen A. blasted ESPN on Tuesday’s First Take over some meaningless ranking of NBA players.
“This is the stuff that diminishes the credibility of ESPN,” Smith ranted. “This is our list, right? Am I correct about this? I believe it’s our list. Yes, it is. What the hell? ESPN needs to drug test anybody that had something to do with this list. It made no sense.”
Smith then went on to scream some stuff about LaMelo Ball, Devin Booker, Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell before going into full performance artist mode to bash ESPN again.
“What the hell is going on?” he asked. “I believe that ESPN should call security right now and go to whoever put this list together on ESPN.com. Line ‘em up and test every one of them. Every one of them! Somebody’s out of it. You gotta be kidding me. This don’t make any sense right here.”

Since Smith is a pro at this schtick, he was smart enough to turn to humor by using the drug testing line, but if you think that any ESPN personality can get away with calling the network’s credibility into question, think again.
Even with tongue in cheek, ESPN does not want anyone at the network, including its top performance artist to joke about “credibility.” It’s a powerful word. Plus, I’m sure the writers of the list were thrilled to hear they are responsible for hurting the credibility of the most powerful sports media company in the world.

anyone checking for the Keyshawn, Jay & Zubin show
Key was away do the death of his daughter (damn shame and wish em the best. the worst thing in the world is losing a child) & Zubin been in & out

but the show has been much more entertaining with Alan Hahn, Bart Scott and any other combo
Zubin really doesnt fit and isnt able to roll with the punches. Alan Hahn been around athletes for a minute covering Basketball & Hockey and being from NY he can roll with the punches. The chemistry is much more natural

wouldnt be suprised if Hahn replaces Zubin eventually

ESPN RADIO COULD MAKE ANOTHER BIG CHANGE
by BOBBY BURACK
about a month agoupdated about a month ago
4Comments
ESPN Radio could undergo yet another change. ESPN has discussed moving morning host Zubin Mehenti off radio and to another role, sources tell OutKick.

Last August, ESPN revamped its radio lineup, which included the new morning show featuring Mehenti, Keyshawn Johnson, and Jay Williams. Sources say that while the show’s ratings — like most shows in the new lineup — are lackluster, the talks to move Mehenti are primarily due to his health, which is said to be ESPN’s focus.

The schedule for a 6 am to 10 am show has been difficult for Mehenti, who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. As a result, Mehenti has missed several airings of the radio show. A return to a more routine SportsCenter schedule could ease the difficulty.

The show addressed the matter in April:

Sources say that Alan Hahn, who has been filling in for Mehenti, will receive strong consideration for the job, should ESPN eventually move Mehenti,.

Moving Hahn to mornings would open up a radio spot from 12-2 pm ET, where Hahn co-hosts with Bart Scott. But a final decision on Mehenti would come first, which again will depend on his health.

In the fall, ESPN Radio’s ratings declined 53% year-over-year (September 10, 2020 – December 12, 2020). That should uptick some this fall with more listeners again commuting for work. In addition, with Le Batard gone, Mike Greenberg, who replaced him from 10 am to noon ET, has added radio affiliates. The current lineup was not the planned lineup 14 months ago when ESPN tried to keep Will Cain and move Emmanuel Acho to a radio show. Cain and Acho left for Fox News and FS1, respectively.

OutKick reached out to ESPN for comment, but it declined.

Report: Zubin Mehenti May Be Moved Off ESPN Radio

The network declined comment, but Alan Hahn is expected to get serious consideration for the role on a full time basis.

ESPN Radio may be in for another change. The lineup has undergone a series of shuffles in the last 12 months. Another one may be coming to morning drive.
Outkick’s Bobby Burack reports that ESPN has had discussions about moving Zubin Mehenti off of Keyshawn, JWill, and Zubin. He has been absent from the network’s morning drive show a lot lately to focus on his health. Zubin Mehenti recently learned he has diabetes.

Burack speculates that moving back to SportsCenter could be a more manageable for both Mehenti and ESPN.
The network declined comment, but Alan Hahn is expected to get serious consideration for the role on a full time basis. He has filled in for Zubin Mehenti fairly regularly lately. If that is the move, it would leave a second hole to be filled. The network would have to pivot its search to a new partner for Bart Scott in the 12-2 pm time slot.

ABSENT PRESENTER Where is ESPN host Zubin Mehenti?

  • 11:15 ET, May 14 2021
  • Updated: 11:15 ET, May 14 2021
ESPN Radio host Zubin Mehenti hasn’t been heard for a while and fans are beginning to wonder where he’s gone.
Here’s everything we know about the sports presenter and his ongoing absence.

Mehenti, 42, hasn’t featured on Keyshawn, JWill, and Zubin - the ESPN radio show he hosts alongside former sports stars Keyshawn Johnson and Jay Williams - for around two months.

He became the new anchor of the 6-10 morning programme in August 2020 - succeeding Mike Golic, who previously held the role for 25 years.
Speaking about his appointment last year, Mehenti said: "The sports-talk radio demographic has been pretty homogeneous for a really long time and we absolutely, positively need to keep those listeners, because they are the foundation.

"They are the people who have been listening to this genre since the 1980s.

"But I think there is definitely room - if you go to any sport, there is a huge umbrella and tent.

"There are more of those people who can come into the sports-talk genre. Maybe they will feel comfortable talking to us."
Alan Hahn has been filling in for Mehenti while he’s been away.

The presenter has recently been diagnosed with diabetes and his absence is linked to that.

Mehenti may not return to the show.

According to Outkick, ESPN are considering replacing Mehenti with Hahn on a permanent basis.

ESPN Radio’s year-on-year ratings declined by more than half during fall 2020, which may encourage the broadcaster's chiefs to make a change.
These ratings were affected by the lack of commuters tuning in as the Covid-19 pandemic forced thousands of listeners to stay at home.

The stand-in host has impressed and may leave his 12-2 afternoon slot, which he currently hosts alongside former NFL star Bart Scott.
Reports suggest Mehenti won’t swap roles with Hahn and will return to SportsCenter, the ESPN show he hosted between 2011 and 2020.
But the morning show’s official Twitter account has tweeted its support of Mehenti, writing: "We can’t wait to welcome him back when he’s ready."

The show stinks with or without Zubin. Keyshawn is insufferable.

I don't know who came up with that line up

Day one didn't work. And was never going to it was obvious

Just like the original format for Get Up.

Some one up top getting paid a lot of money to do quirky sh*t without really thinking it through.

They have a stable of talent they are wasting and losing.

Dan Lebatard should have gotten that spot

Bomani Michael Smith Elle Duncan Dominique I could go on.

Much like Lebatard he got a LOYAL following they WILL follow him wherever he goes

Its funny as much as I don't like him?

Jim Rome was the OG of going independent on some Rush Limbaugh of sports vibe (MONEY wise)

I think if Bomani wasn't under that big contract he would have left with Dan.

Jemele just got a BIG deal with Spotify

ESPN is doing backward

they had a STABLE of quality personalities under contract

micromanaged and mismanaged them...

and going AWAY from that

when the ENTIRE entertainment industry is leaning the OTHER way creating platforms BASED on personalities

and doing WELL.

I have no idea because all the large sports media outlets closing or shrinking
Golic Sr. needs to shut up about ESPN. He keeps complaining about ESPN when his son has a show. 17 years at one company is amazing. Move on.
I don’t know man. He might have help birth espn radio. He deserved better.

ppl cutting cords
the rights to live sports are going up (cause its the only thing that is relatively DVR/Cord-cutter Proof)
ESPN cutting ppl left and right (they just got rid Kenny Mayne who was an ICON)

ESPN only paying ppl Stephen A Smith who really move the meter as far a ratings and crossover appeal. He the exception, not the rule.

it sucks but ESPN aint paying ppl or keeping ppl forever anymore cause the business model has changed
Mike & Mike were one of the reasons I got into sports radio and podcasts eventually. They got me through some long ass commutes and tough mornings at work. But the game has changed

Bill Simmons, Jemel Hill, Dan Lambetard, Cari Champion, Skip Bayless, Collin Cowheard etc all left ESPN on their own and excelling.
They've found and/or created new lanes

Golic in weird spot cause ESPN didnt think he was worth it anymore but he a bit of a dinosaur & cant find his new lane
furthermore his son was able to parlay his dad's career to getting his own spot on ESPN
it sucks for Golic but ppl get laid-off/fired everyday and he been cut as player. Its a business and you only worth what someone is willling to pay you
