PABLO TORRE AND BOMANI JONES REPORTEDLY UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR NOON ESPN2 SHOW

The changes to the ESPN lineup are continuing in the wake of Michael Smith and Jemele Hill becoming 6 p.m. SportsCenter hosts starting in February. That’s opened up the old noon Eastern on ESPN2 slot that Smith and Hill used to fill with His and Hers, and according to Michael McCarthyof The Sporting News, Pablo Torre (right above) and Bomani Jones (left above) are under consideration to do a combined studio show in that slot:

ESPN is eying Bomani Jones and Pablo S. Torre to replace Jemele Hill and Michael Smith in the noon time slot on ESPN2, sources tell Sporting News.

The two up and comers are under consideration to create their own studio show, succeeding “His & Hers” when Hill and Smith move to the 6 p.m. “SportsCenter” next year.

Both Jones and Torre are viewed as rising talents in Bristol.

However, a source said a final decision hasn’t been made. And Jones/Torre is just one of several scenarios under consideration. ESPN declined to comment.

So, this is still very preliminary at this point, but it’s certainly interesting that Jones and Torre are under consideration here. Both have demonstrated a wide range of talents at ESPN over the past few years, with Torre writing for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com and showing a solid TV presence on everything from Olbermann to Around The Horn and Jones becoming a key part of Highly Questionable and also hosting his The Right Time radio show. They might be interesting figures to bounce off each other, too; both are very smart and offer some outside-of-the-box perspectives, and a show with both seems more likely to be about interesting, thought-provoking nuanced discussion than embracing debate and hot takes. We’ll see if this happens, but it’s definitely an idea with some potential.

ESPN is eying Bomani Jones and Pablo S. Torre to replace Jemele Hill and Michael Smith in the noon time slot on ESPN2, sources tell Sporting News.

The two up and comers are under consideration to create their own studio show, succeeding "His & Hers" when Hill and Smith move to the 6 p.m. "SportsCenter" next year.

Both Jones and Torre are viewed as rising talents in Bristol.

However, a source said a final decision hasn't been made. And Jones/Torre is just one of several scenarios under consideration. ESPN declined to comment.

Based out of Miami, Jones currently co-hosts "Highly Questionable" with Dan Le Batard and his father Gonzalo "Papi" Le Batard on ESPN2 (4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m ET). He also has his own ESPN Radio show, "The Right Time with Bomani Jones."

Torre is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com, who has guest-hosted for Tony Reali on "Around the Horn" and appeared on other studio shows such as "Pardon the Interruption" and "Around the Horn."

Torre joined ESPN from "Sports Illustrated" in 2012. He caused a stir on social media Thursday with his take on Josh Brown of the Giants and rape culture.

ESPN recently announced Hill and Smith will take the reins on a "re-imagined" SportsCenter on Feb. 6, the day after Super Bowl LI. Both Hill and Smith have also inked multi-year deals contract extensions with ESPN.

Lindsay Czarniak, current host of the 6 p.m. "SportsCenter," will take maternity leave this fall. She'll be reassigned to other duties when she returns to ESPN. Between her maternity leave, and the ascension of Hill and Smith, the 6 p.m. "SportsCenter" will be anchored by Zubin Mehenti, Matt Barrie and others.

Critics like Jamie Horowitz of rival FS1 says highlight shows led by "SportsCenter" are on their way out as sports fans get their news/highlights from their phones and iPads. But ESPN counters there's plenty of life left in the "SportsCenter" format as long as it changes with the times.

Anchor Scott Van Pelt has successfully hand-tailored his midnight "SportsCenter" around his own opinions and personality. Kevin Negandhi and Jay Harris are leading the all-new "SportsCenter:AM," with colleagues Jaymee Sire, Randy Scott and Sarina Morales.

Smith and Hill have excellent chemistry on "His & Hers," which started off as a podcast. They also have a welcome sense of fun — as witnessed by their parody of the Will Ferrell comedy "Anchorman."

They'll try to infuse their chemistry and personality into the 6 p.m. SportsCenter.

Said Hill in a statement: “We feel as if we’ve been building toward this, even though neither one of us ever saw ourselves as SportsCenter anchors. We hope to embed the culture and vibe we created on 'His & Hers' into ESPN’s signature program.”

The new "SportsCenter: AM," meanwhile, will face a new challenger in coming months.

Sporting News broke the news that Horowitz' FS1 plans to launch a new 6 A.M. morning show as a lead-in to "Undisputed" with Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe (9:30 a.m. ET). NBA insider Chris Broussard also confirmed SN's report that he's jumping to FS1 from ESPN.

If Jones does get his own show at noon, it remains to be seen whether he'll continue to appear on "Highly Questionable" with the Le Batards.

I would like Bomani to have his OWN show, like Eisen....or put him with another host from the south.

Pablo is smart, he lacks on camera personality though. I feel he would be better as a written personality

and someone please break down WTF he was talking about with regards to Josh Brown and winning culture, civilization, and men dominating civilization.

I can admit sometimes I just cant understand philosophy on a higher sphere, WTF was he alluding too?

i am happy they going to do the show i guess @ mike and jamele
but im not going to watch sport center still
cause they won't have enough air time and won't be able to talk about topics and discuss them
fuck highlights.

I am hoping they are SMART and allow the existing producers from PTI, Highly Questionable and His & Hers to MODERNIZE sportscenter....

and hire writers.

I think Pablo was saying "White men have been getting away with rape & murder for years & the other side (people of color) want them to be punished like they would.

Pablo is smart but he uses 15 words when only nine will do.

They would have to dumb it down

It would be too intelligent for the average person watching ESPN

I don't really watch HQ. I watch it in bits waiting for ATH to come on, before heading to the gym.

Pablo is annoying man

I like Pablo, he goes over peoples heads

I'm selfish. I rock with Pablo, but not nearly as much as Bo. I want Bo unfiltered, by himeself talking about real shit. I feel like they threw in Pablo to control Bo and keep him in the "safe" zone.

Only on Dans show. He speaks truth, but I'm a much more safe and acceptable package. As I said thougj, Bo don't need a sidekick, he's good by himself. Unless you wanna count Shannon.. Whose a producer who talks.

He calls white people out or everything

but he speaks so fast and the way he words it I think most people are left going

Bo and Pablo rock with each other anyway. I think it's smart for ESPN to keep people together who have chemistry like Tony and Mike, Jemele and Mike and Greeny and Golic. I remember Bo left the door open for him while he was recording Evening Jones and he forgot he did it, and he scared the shit out of him

ESPN.com, will host a newly created one-hour live program premiering Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018 on ESPN from noon – 1 p.m. ET. More details about the show will be announced at a later date. The program will also be streamed live on the ESPN app and WatchESPN across all devices and platforms.

“Had someone asked me a year ago who I’d want to work with on a new TV show, I would have said Pablo Torre,” Jones said. “Now that it’s going to happen, I couldn’t be more excited. We have a chance to make something new, fresh and entertaining, and I can’t wait to take on that challenge.”

Torre added, “Bomani Jones happens to be one of my best friends in this strange business, not least because I wind up laughing while being challenged and enlightened every time we talk. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to turn ourselves into a live sports television show that’s as fun to watch as it will be to make.”

ESPN has signed Torre to a multiyear extension which will also afford him the opportunity to continue making regular appearances across a variety of shows and platforms including television shows Around the Horn, Pardon the Interruption, SportsNation, The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz and Highly Questionable. He will also continue writing for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com as well as regularly participate in ESPN’s “The Basketball Analogy” podcast. Torre joined ESPN in 2012.

Jones, whose new multiyear extension with ESPN was announced in December 2016, will continue to host The Right Time with Bomani Jones for three hours every weekday. He will remain as co-host of Highly Questionable until late June 2017. He will also continue to appear on a variety of ESPN television and radio shows. Jones joined ESPN full time in 2013.

Mike Greenberg’s new morning show on ESPN and Trey Wingo linking up with Mike Golic for the relaunch of Mike and not-Mike. Additionally, SportsCenter is getting yet another overhaul with news updates throughout the day.

One new nugget of information that comes from ESPN’s busy day of revelations for their 2018 schedule is a new weekday show that will begin in January that will star two of the network’s brightest young stars – Pablo Torre and Bomani Jones.

ADVERTISING
Jones (36) and Torre (31) have had a consistent presence on ESPN airwaves for a number of years and now they’ll get the chance to have a show all their own that will fall between First Take and Outside the Lines on ESPN’s daily schedule. Jones will also continue to host his show The Right Time on ESPN Radio while Torre has signed a new contract with the network.

Here is the announcement from ESPN:

ESPN rising stars Bomani Jones, host of ESPN Radio’s The Right Time with Bomani Jones, and Pablo Torre, senior writer for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com, will host a newly created one-hour live program premiering Tuesday, Jan.

We don’t know the format of the show yet, but it will likely fall in line with other programs we see throughout the day on ESPN with Jones and Torre offering their commentary on the events of the day. It makes sense that the pair would be the perfect bridge from the high volume of First Take to the in-depth reporting of Outside the Lines.

Much has been made of ESPN’s layoffs and the need to cultivate new stars and build from within. There arguably aren’t two better choices than Jones and Torre who offer a great mix of insightful commentary, relevancy, and humor. And their new weekday show is a great platform for new voices to help lead ESPN into a new age.

I do not like this pairing...

I really hope I'm wrong and his works out well

Cause I am and will forever be a lifelong fan of Bo.

I wonder who will replace him on Highly Questionable?
