No its just a preference. The original Star Trek made many social statements that still resonate today. If you lived during the era when Star Trek aired you would understand how ground breaking that series was.

Then as Trekkie's kept begging finally (20+ years later) in 1987 around here comes the TNG with a boring Capt. Piccard. Funny you used the word intellectual, because that's how TNG came off as opposed to Star Trek which some called a western shoot um up in outer space.

But don't get me wrong its the TNG TV series I have issues with, the movies are much better.

You are spot on I like all the The series, but the original is western style like you mentioned, just like Star Wars. I went to see Star Trek movies in the early 80's but I was a little kid, by the time TNG came on I was a teen. The fact that TNG was philosophical was influential and fascinating to me at such a young age. My vocabulary skills in school were great because of that series. It probably wouldn't have had such an huge impact on me if I were older and more acquainted with many of the mature subjects it addressed.

most of what matters for star wars is what happens in the movies. star wars is movie-based.
most of what matters for star trek is what happens on t.v. star trek is t.v.-based.

lets face it, there are really only two good star wars movies [new hope and empire] and movies are what matter in star wars.
compare that with more than 50 years of quality trek on t.v., including at least 3 good films [the motion picture, khan, 2009].

star trek is superior as a franchise.

Watching Star Trek feels like going home. The scene in the last TNG EP when Picard joins the crew for poker and he looks around the table, that's what Star Trek is about.

For me Star Wars is enjoyable on a different level. Loved Empire strikes back, none of the movies that followed were as enjoyable. The lore in the books, comics & games really fleshed out the universe.

As a kid and as a teen, Star Wars. As an adult, Star Trek without question. Star Wars gave me that feeling of adventure and excitement but Star Trek covered some deep heavy material that really hit close to home.

I feel the same way. Star Trek has a much more adult storyline. Star Wars seemed to me a childish storyline that was repetitive and not as flexible as it could be. How many motherfucker death-stars are you on the fucking build to realize that shit doesn't work

Empire Strikes back is one of the best movies of all time. Not even the suckage of Episodes 1-3 can negate that.

Can't wait till they turn Boyega's character into a Jedi. His force sense awakened in episode 7. Im excited
