I think it was because the Republicans put up weak ass candidates against Obama. Career politicians who did not reach the same segment that Trump was able to.

I'm sure many will disagree, but Trump gave a voice to a segment of Americans (religious, poor and lower middle-class whites) who felt like their concerns were going unheard. He played on their fears and concerns. They in turn came out in droves to put him in office.
