Pete Davidson Praises Kanye West’s ‘Bravery’ for Speaking About Mental Health

The somewhat thoughtful, somewhat tense social media discourse between Ariana Grande and Kanye West about mental health has earned itself a new supporting player: Grande’s ex, Pete Davidson. The comedian, who recently returned to online life after a break-up hiatus, wrote a since-deleted Instagram message in support of West’s musings, seemingly inserting a dig at Grande in the process. “Bravo Kanye West for standing up for yourself and speaking out against mental health. I can’t explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this,” Davidson wrote. “We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. I’m seriously disgusted.” Davidson has never shied away from speaking openly about his struggle with borderline personality disorder and depression, which is sometimes incorporated into his SNL work.

A few minutes later, Davidson posted a separate, graver message: “I really don’t want to be on this Earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last. All I’ve ever tried to do was help people. Just remember I told you so.” Davidson went on to delete his Instagram account. The New York Timesreports he’s accounted for — a police officer was sent to SNL’s studio to confirm his whereabouts, and an NBC rep separately contacted the NYPD to confirm he’s “fine.”

Earlier today, West called out Grande on social media for what he believed was an inappropriate tweet regarding the ongoing feud between him and Drake. (Grande encouraged her fans to ignore the “grown men arguing” in favor of listening to her new song.) “I know Ariana said this to be cool and didn’t mean no harm but I don’t like even slightest level of slight commentary from someone I know loves and respects me,” West wrote. “All of this foolishness weighed on my mental health so @ArianaGrande you know I got love for you but until you’re ready to really make sure everyone’s ok don’t use me or this moment to promote a song.”

Hours later, Grande apologized, but clarified her comment wasn’t meant as an insult against West. “With all due respect, I don’t need to use anyone to promote anything. Period. I was making a comment [about] what men were doing at the time vs. women,” she wrote. “It was a joke which I understand now was probably insensitive. I apologize if I was in any way triggering and hope you feel well today.”

Kanye West Didn’t Appreciate Ariana Grande’s ‘Foolish’ Twitter Commentary About Him

Drake is so, so yesterday. In a series of tweets published Saturday morning — or, as he’d like us to refer to them from now on, “therapy testimonials” — Kanye West expressed annoyance at how Ariana Grande responded to his beef reignition with Drake earlier this week. “I know Ariana said this to be cool and didn’t mean no harm but I don’t like even slightest level of slight commentary from someone I know loves and respects me,” West wrote, screenshotting Grande’s tweet that implores fans to ignore the “grown men arguing” in favor of listening to her and Miley Cyrus’s new songs. “People will no longer take mental health for a joke … all of this foolishness weighed on my mental health so @ArianaGrande you know I got love for you but until you’re ready to really make sure everyone’s ok don’t use me or this moment to promote a song.” He added, about his own experiences with mental health: “No one would ever choose to end up in a mental hospital and diagnosed with a mental disorder but god chose me to publicly go through this journey and it is beautiful.”

In the same round of tweets, West also expressed interest in one day hosting SNL as opposed to being relegated to a musical guest. Despite this, he spelled Lorne Michaels’ name wrong … twice. “Lauren [is] the goat. Ye gotta host,” he wrote. “Typo. Lauren Michaels is the goat.”

Update, Saturday afternoon: Grande responded to West’s remarks on her Twitter account, equally pushing back and apologizing. “With all due respect, I don’t need to use anyone to promote anything. Period. I was making a comment [about] what men were doing at the time vs. women,” she wrote. “It was a joke which I understand now was probably insensitive. I apologize if I was in any way triggering and hope you feel well today.”

December 15, 2018
Hours later, Grande added the following on Twitter: “Man I’m so sorry I told a dumb joke. I really didn’t mean any harm. All I want everyone to be healthy and happy. So desperately. Please. My god … I’m downstairs and I’m not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything. I know you have everyone you need and that’s not me, but I’m here too.”

All this Emotional/Mental Attention-Whoring these days.

Young Cats can't deal with their shit or get help privately anymore.
Neither can older cats we just rarely seek help for our issues. Don’t blame mental illness on being young.

Just like PTSD to quote my uncle “we had that shit for years they just didn’t know what to call it back then”

I was not blaming Mental Illness on being young.
It's just now I hate the fact that it's got a celebrity aspect to it now that comes off eccentric and trendy.

And I talk to folks all the time possible about the mental effects of Slavery on Black Folks in this country.
And how We've haven't really addressed it.
All those books my GrandFather had by everyone form Na'im Akbar, Kujufu, Nathan/Juila Hare, Welsing, ect. helped keep me in mental check to a degree.

Hell.
Every time I travel in this city (NYC) and see mentally ill Black folks, I feel they got that way due to not being able to handle Racism. Though that may not be in some cases, you do have to pause and wonder.

It's the least significant thing in an already insignificant story, but how is Kanye going to correct a "typo" and still call Lorne Michaels "Lauren"? You have been on the show, son. Wow....

Pete Davidson briefly appeared on Saturday Night Live to introduce Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson, and Sean Ono Lennon. Cyrus, Ronson, and Lennon were there to perform a cover of John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War is Over).” Speculation abounded as to whether he would appear at all this week, since he posted a troubling message on Instagram before deleting his account. An NYPD officer did a wellness check earlier and spoke to Davidson at 30 Rock earlier Saturday afternoon. Besides this moment, Pete only appeared in a pretaped sketch about potential new Oscar hosts.

Update, December 17: TMZ reports that Pete Davidson had Ariana Grande turned away from 30 Rock when she arrived to check on him. Following Davidson’s troubling Instagram post, Grande tweeted and deleted that she was “downstairs and I’m not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything.” She continued, “I know u have everyone u need and that’s not me, but i’m here too.” According to TMZ, Grande informed friends that she was coming to see Davidson and they alerted him that she was on her way. Davidson reportedly told security not to let her in.

It is unclear from the report if his ex-fiancee, Ariana Grande, is one of the people Davidson feels has not been there for him.

Grande rushed to her ex's New York City office last week after seeing the post on Instagram but he refused to see her.

The pair broke up acrimoniously earlier this year but have since both publicly tried to make amends.

Davidson has spoken openly in the past about his struggles with depression.

Worrying: On Saturday, Davidson penned this harrowing message in a since-deleted post on Instagram which terrified his friends, family and fans

Davidson alerted security 'to hold his ex-fiancee at bay' when he learned the pop she was on her way, according to TMZ.

Drew was in Culver City Thursday and he railed on the trolls who have been attacking Pete, calling them "evil." He says Pete is in a super delicate state after a gut-wrenching breakupwith Ariana, and people need to get off his back ... because, at this point, his life depends on it.

As we reported, Ariana rushed to see Pete at 30 Rock Saturday after he posted apparent suicide threats ... something that was triggered by one of Ariana's posts in which she went after Kanye West, saying "stop weaponizing mental health. everyone." Pete, who suffers from mental health issues, took it in a deeply personal way.

Bottom line ... Dr. Drew says Pete needs some space to heal.
