Ariana Grande has posted a number of tributes to her longtime boyfriend Mac Miller in the months since his death in September from an apparent drug overdose. She posted another on her Instagram story Sunday night — a shot of his hands playing a keyboard — but deleted it soon afterward without explanation.
Early Monday, she elaborated further on her tumultuous 2018 — which also saw the beginning and end of her brief engagement to “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson, as well as several hit singles and her hit album “Sweetener” — with an Instagram post that reads, “farewell 2018, you f—. i hope this new year brings you all much laughter, clarity and healing. be gentle with yourselves and each other. if we made it thru this last year, we’ll for sure make it thru this one. thank you for everything. ”
While Grande’s tributes to Miller have mostly been photographs or brief videos, she honored him and others in her recent hit song “Thank U, Next” — calling him “an angel” — and also posted an emotional note to him in September, which reads: “i adored you from the day i met you when i was nineteen and i always will,” she wrote. “i can’t believe you aren’t here anymore. i really can’t wrap my head around it. we talked about this. so many times. i’m so mad, i’m so sad i don’t know what to do. you were my dearest friend. for so long. above anything else. i’m so sorry i couldn’t fix or take your pain away. i really wanted to. the kindest, sweetest soul with demons he never deserved. i hope you’re okay now. rest.”
In October, she posted a touching video of Miller getting dressed for Oscar night, taken just weeks before the couple split and two months before he died.
Grande’s is expected to release a new album, also titled “Thank U, Next,” in the coming weeks. She will spend much of 2019 on her “Sweetener” tour, which launches in March

On Monday night Pete Davidson returned to stand-up comedy for the first time after his suicide scare, reports the New York Times. The Saturday Night Live cast member performed two sold-out shows in the Boston-area, which included material about marijuana (a frequent theme of Davidson’s comedy) and his high profile relationship with Ariana Grande and their break-up. He referenced some of the blowback he’s received since parting ways with Grande, claiming that kids taunted his mother, a school nurse, by singing “thank u, next.”
The shows were his first public comedy performances since he posted on Instagram, “I really don’t want to be on this Earth anymore.” The comedian, who has spoken openly about his struggles with mental health, wrote, “I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last. All I’ve ever tried to do was help people. Just remember I told you so.” He then deleted his Instagram account, but the December 15 post led a New York police officer to check in on Davidson at SNL’s studio.
During that night’s SNL episode Davidson did not appear in any sketches, but he did introduce Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson, and Sean Ono Lennon before their performance of “Happy Xmas (War is Over).” That was the last episode before the long-running series took its scheduled winter hiatus. A source tells the Times that he is expected to return to the series when it begins airing new episodes again in 2019.

The somewhat thoughtful, somewhat tense social media discourse between Ariana Grande and Kanye West about mental health has earned itself a new supporting player: Grande’s ex, Pete Davidson. The comedian, who recently returned to online life after a break-up hiatus, wrote a since-deleted Instagram message in support of West’s musings, seemingly inserting a dig at Grande in the process. “Bravo Kanye West for standing up for yourself and speaking out against mental health. I can’t explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this,” Davidson wrote. “We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. I’m seriously disgusted.” Davidson has never shied away from speaking openly about his struggle with borderline personality disorder and depression, which is sometimes incorporated into his SNL work.
A few minutes later, Davidson posted a separate, graver message: “I really don’t want to be on this Earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last. All I’ve ever tried to do was help people. Just remember I told you so.” Davidson went on to delete his Instagram account. The New York Timesreports he’s accounted for — a police officer was sent to SNL’s studio to confirm his whereabouts, and an NBC rep separately contacted the NYPD to confirm he’s “fine.”
Earlier today, West called out Grande on social media for what he believed was an inappropriate tweet regarding the ongoing feud between him and Drake. (Grande encouraged her fans to ignore the “grown men arguing” in favor of listening to her new song.) “I know Ariana said this to be cool and didn’t mean no harm but I don’t like even slightest level of slight commentary from someone I know loves and respects me,” West wrote. “All of this foolishness weighed on my mental health so @ArianaGrande you know I got love for you but until you’re ready to really make sure everyone’s ok don’t use me or this moment to promote a song.”
Hours later, Grande apologized, but clarified her comment wasn’t meant as an insult against West. “With all due respect, I don’t need to use anyone to promote anything. Period. I was making a comment [about] what men were doing at the time vs. women,” she wrote. “It was a joke which I understand now was probably insensitive. I apologize if I was in any way triggering and hope you feel well today.”

“Thank u, Next” is a certified banger (and a very fun music video) from the saccharine mind of Ariana Grande, a song that’s somehow able to make breakups an empowering experience that’s less about sobbing next to Oreo sleeves on a couch, and more about being grateful about what your ex taught you about yourself. The tune, of course, was released after Grande broke off her engagement with SNL player Pete Davidson, but as she explained in a new interview on the Zach Sang Show, she actually recorded a few versions of the song to reflect the different relationship outcomes that could’ve occurred with Davidson.
“We had like three different versions of the song,” she said, per Rolling Stone. “In my relationship at the time, things were like up and down and on and off, and so I didn’t know what was going to happen and then we got back together. So I had to make a different version of it, and then we broke up again, so we ended up going with that verse.” One of those recordings, indeed, reflected if she wound up getting hitched to Davidson. “There’s a version where I was getting married, there’s a version where I’m not getting married, there’s a version with nothing,” Grande added. “We’re not talking about anything, but we all knew that the first version was gonna be the version we ultimately went with.” And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
