Who Is Ariana Grande, Really?

In less than six years, she has become one of the most successful pop artists of all time. Who is she?

Born the 26th of June in 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida, Ariana Grande grew up within what she refers to as a “stereotypical poker-playing, loud, friendly, food-shoving, loving Italian family.” She is the only daughter of Joan Grande, CEO of a “company that manufactures communications equipment for the Marines and the Navy,” and Edward Butera, a graphic designer from whom she became estranged after her parents divorced in the late ’90s. She has one half-brother, Frankie, who appeared as Boots the Monkey in a national tour of Dora the Explorer Live!

Though she was not personally in the Mafia as a child, she “feel like we knew some of the Mafia but were not involved, for sure. I do know somewhere down the line there were some friendships … it wasn’t something I bragged about.”

One year, for Halloween, her mother smeared blood all over the walls in the family’s new house and said “O.J. did it.”

Her fourth birthday party was Jaws-themed. All of her friends left, crying. “There was a stage, when I was 3 or 4,” she said, “where my mom thought I might grow up to be a serial killer.”

In 1998, she was hit by two errant hockey pucks at two separate Florida Panthers games. “What are the odds of this happening?” wondered her father, who the Sun-Sentinel described as “visibly shaken.”

$200: The amount of money Ariana’s mother spent at an auction to purchase a Zamboni ride atop the Florida Panthers’ rink for Ariana after she was hit by the hockey pucks.

consumed “zeppole and spiedini and everything Italian.” In her teens, she would change her diet completely, eating only “salmon, vegetables, and fruits — super healthy.” She once called national chain Stir Crazy the “best restaurant ever.”

Later, she would change her diet again, this time becoming a vegan due to the fact that she “love animals more than I love most people, not kidding.” A rhetorical question she has since posed: “Ultimately, no one wants cow tit pus in their food, do they?”

$2,000: The amount of money a Poshmark user charged for a McDonald’s milkshake allegedly sipped by Ariana.

88: The number of minutes it took Ariana to announce “i can promise u i’ve never touched that milkshake” on Twitter.

By the time she was 6 years old, she had already “manifested” that she would become a famous pop star.

Her debut role was in the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater’s production of Annie, as Annie. After one performance, she autographed a peer’s arms.

Gloria Estefan saw her performing “My Heart Will Go On” at a cruise-ship karaoke lounge at the age of 8 and told her mother that “this is what she needs to be doing.” Recently, Gloria suggested that Ariana play Gloria in a biopic.

From the ages of 16 to 20, she dyed her hair red once per week to play Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon’s Victorious. The resulting damage to her hair caused it to become “so broken that it looks absolutely ratchet and absurd when I let it down.” As a result, she wore it in a high ponytail with “more fake hair than every drag queen on earth combined” for years, a style that has now become her signature. She can no longer feel the nerves in her head.

6,080,000: The number of Google search results for “Ariana Grande’s Ponytail.”

She is five feet tall. She wears heels so often that she believes “something is wrong with her.” She once wore six-inch heels to Disneyland. She has described her personal style as “Audrey Hepburn and Chanel,” but explained that “on the inside I’m only fascinated with dark, macabre, and weird things. Like the ‘Thriller’ video.” She has terrible vision but rarely wears glasses. “Is that a bird or a man?” she once asked.

Monte Lipman signed Ariana in 2011 after he watched YouTube clips of her covering Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, India.Arie, and Adele. She recorded her first single, “Put Your Hearts Up,” in 2011. Later, she described the experience of filming the video — in which she wears “a bad spray tan and a princess dress” while “frolicking in the street” — as “the worst moment of my life” and “straight out of hell.”

Despite having no formal vocal training, she is a lyric soprano with a four-octave vocal range, including her rare whistle register.

Her voice has been described as “totally annihilating,” “undeniable,”“outsize,” “a joy,” “beyond her years,” “gymnastic,” “Mariah Carey–level,”“vibrant,” “huge,” “unrivalled,” “Dramamine,” “limitless,” “athletically absurd,”a “featherlight marvel,” a “big pillow,” “a weapon,” and something that “transmutes the very idea of stardom into sound.”

In 2013, she starred in a spinoff of Victorious called Sam & Cat. Though the show won “Favorite TV Show” at Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, rumors of a feud between Ariana and her co-star, Jennette McCurdy, overshadowed the show’s success and reached a fever pitch when Jeanette penned a TwitLonger obliquely directed at Ariana that read, “You suck the life right out of me.” Ariana replied just as obliquely via her own tweet: “One of those days where u need that venti knowwhummsayn.”

Sam & Cat was canceled after one season. She has since told Rolling Stone, “I hate acting.”

On an episode of Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens, she is stabbed to death in a silk crop top by a serial killer wearing a Satan costume.

12: The number of months out of the year that Ariana celebrates Halloween.

She once had what she describes as a “ghost/demon experience” while in Kansas City. After visiting a cemetery known as “one of the seven gates to hell,” she “felt this sick, overwhelming feeling of negativity over the whole car and we smelled sulfur, which is the sign of a demon, and there was a fly in the car randomly, which is another sign of a demon.” Though she apologized to the demon for trespassing, she was soon visited by “disturbing images with red shapes” in bed, and after she “scooched over” to get away from it, she encountered “massive black matter.” Though her friend advised her to “tell [the demon] to eff off,” she felt it would feed on her fear, and instead fell asleep, then later deleted her photo folder called “demons” just “to be safe.”

11: The age at which Ariana converted from Catholicism to Kabbalah.

Her first album, 2013’s Yours Truly, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Albums Chart and inspired President Barack Obama to invite her to sing at the White House’s Easter Egg Roll.

On the cover of her third album, Dangerous Woman, she wears a latex, black face mask with rabbit ears.

In the music video for “Side to Side,” she rides a spin bike while singing about how it hurts to walk after one has too much sex.

She has at least 37 tattoos, including a crescent moon on her neck, the word babydoll on her right-hand ring finger, the word hi on her second toe, the acronym H2GKMO (standing for “honest to God knock me out”) on her right hand, and the Kanji characters 七 輪 on her left palm. She thought the characters translated to “seven rings,” the name of her hit single, but in reality, they translate to “small barbecue grill.” After consulting her Japanese tutor, she added an additional character to correct the phrase, which now reads “Japanese barbecue finger.”

She was once caught on tape leaning over a Los Angeles doughnut shop’s countertop to lick a doughnut she had not purchased. She turned to her then-boyfriend, backup dancer Ricky Alvarez, and informed him, “I hate Americans. I hate America.” After national blowback, including a canceled White House performance, she apologized, explaining that she was concerned about America’s obesity epidemic but also “disgusted with [her behavior].”

“It is not clear at this time if the affected doughnuts were disposed of or sold to another patron,” read the police statement.

In her single, “Wit It This Christmas,” she asks if her love interest is “down for some of these milk and cookies?”

She is hypoglycemic.

For a time, her biggest fear was “swallowing pills.”

Two hours: The amount of time Ariana recently spent having a “productive conversation” with previous sworn enemy Piers Morgan while both were drunk at a Los Angeles restaurant.

She is the second-most-followed person on Instagram, just underneath Cristiano Ronaldo, with 149 million followers. She once posted a selfie on Instagram that became a viral sensation after fans spotted what they believed to be a “black dildo” in the left-hand corner. In a follow-up video, she explained it was a “power strip.” “Y’all need Jesus,” she said.

10: The number of inches Ariana attributed to Pete Davidson’s penis on Twitter.

0: The number of days Ariana allowed that tweet to stay up.

She has seven dogs, one of which is named Toulouse and starred (alone) in a Coach campaign.

150: The maximum number of pounds likely to be reached by Ariana’s pet pig, Piggy Smalls.

She can do flawless impressions of Jennifer Lawrence, Judy Garland, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Amy Lee from Evanescence, Jennifer Coolidge, Céline Dion, Shakira, Rihanna, and her 93-year-old grandmother.

During a day off on tour in Australia, she rented a tour bus, took the mic, and according to one of her collaborators, “became our Broadway-musical-style tour guide and delivered sidesplitting commentary.”

She prefers to be photographed on the left side of her face.

60: The number of times Ariana says “baby” in the song “Baby I.”

In her hit single “Break Free,” she sings, “I only want to die alive / Never by the hands of a broken heart / I don’t wanna hear you lie tonight / Now that I’ve become who I really are.” She has said she fought Swedish super-producer Max Martin on the lyrics “the entire time”: “I am not going to sing a grammatically incorrect lyric, help me, God!”

She has enjoyed public relationships with Nathan Sykes, Graham Phillips, Big Sean, Mac Miller, Alvarez, Jai Brooks, and Pete Davidson, whom she nearly married after one month of dating. Four of these men are mentioned by name in her single “Thank U, Next”; in the video, she proclaimed that Sean could “still get it.”

“True love doesn’t exist,” she recently tweeted. Hours later, she tweeted, “True love might exist, I was just hungry.”

7: The number of aliens Ariana murders in her “Break Free” video.

She is obsessed with the Harry Potter franchise and has the word lumostattooed on her hand. She announced her relationship with now-ex-fiancé Davidson by posting a photo at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter with the caption, “the chamber of secrets has been opened.” She identifies as a Slytherin.

One of the scariest dreams she has ever had centered on being trapped in a room with Kevin Jonas and an alien.

6: The number of beanbag chairs in Ariana Grande’s $16 million Manhattan apartment.

4: The number of Saw films Ariana has described as “brilliant.”

She has released five albums in as many years, and two within the span of six months, both of which reached No. 1 instantaneously. Her most recent,Thank U, Next, has smashed chart records previously set by the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, and Ariana herself.

She wrote Thank U, Next in one week and recorded it in two, engineering and comping her own vocals.

The album was inspired, in part, by her ex-boyfriend Miller’s death, as well as her breakup with Davidson. She described the process as “feminine energy and champagne and music and laughter and crying.”

93: The amount of times Ariana says “yuh” on Thank U, Next.

Frequent collaborator Savan Kotecha described her as a “vocal savant.” “She knows every detail about her voice: ‘That note over there, that’s a little bit flat.’ We’ll be like, ‘What? No it’s not.’ She’s like, ‘Yes it is, that little syllable there.’ I’ve been around some of the greatest singers of all time. I’ve never seen anything like this.”

“You know how people say we’re 60 percent water?” she said. “I’m 60 percent pink Veuve Clicquot.”

She hates Monopoly and believes it “only brings violence and misery.” She once ended a friendship over the board game. Her newest single is titled “Monopoly.”

“I’m actually going to be Edie Beale from Grey Gardens when I’m an old lady,” she tweeted. Approximately one year later, she tweeted, “I am going to be the Edie Beale of dogs.”

Only visited Toronto briefly some years back. Never been to Miss' Rd, lol. As for celebrity shit ... run Google Images for David Beckham's cars and motorcycles. He's had some great ones over the years. Major collection. As for homes? Some of the best ones being bought and sold have been featured on Million Dollar Listing LA and NY over the years. Those shows are worth checking out just for some of the spectacular visuals. Those high rise shots in NY. The drone & panoramic westcoast shots up in the hills and shit. Can't think of any particular ones at the moment, as both shows have run for several seasons. As for current stuff ... I like the look of the place Vanessa Hudgens just sold. Had a nice, non-gawdy livable feel to it. Looked relaxing and with a chill, modest backyard and pool. 6 bed, 6.5 bath. As for sleek and modern ... Trevor Noah's Bel-Air pad is the truth. That's the official panty-dropper right there!

Agreed. It's that tricky balance with celebrity. When you get too big, your whole life is on display and has that fishbowl feel. Even worse when your place(s) get robbed, or stalkers start to come around (as we often see in the news). Or the constant paparazzi hounding when you're out doing simple shit like errands and going out for dinner. Trev's definitely doing it nice with the LA & NY properties. I prefer the LA one. Props to Hudgens on that property. Good taste - she bought it when she was still a teen off that High School Musical money earned. Beckham's got all the cars, SUVs, and motorcycles. His collection's legit. Good point about vacations & winter getaway-type appeal, and not 24-7, 365. You appreciate it more, as you said, when it's not constant. On a related note ... it's interesting to see what friends & coworkers buy over time too. Houses, townhomes, condos, etc. My brother bought a 4oyo house. My coworker just bought a pre-sale apartment. My friends just bought a 3-bed, 3-bath townhome after upgrading from an old 1-bed, 1-bath apartment. Another friend just bought a rental condo, etc. Interesting hearing peoples' real estate experiences.

The brownstone in Harlem sounds legit. They need to bring back MTV Cribs. That show was fun. The variety of styles of peoples' properties. Good point about fame and friendship(s) ... the people that show their true colors ... people on the payroll eventually becoming the closest to you, while others fall off, and others come out of the woodwork for $. I've always respected how Lebron James kept his circle tight and cohesive. Bringing his friends along with him in business and partnership as he grew his international stardom. Knowing he can trust them the most. Good deal with your friends inheriting real estate and land. Been encouraging a friend of mine to look into early retirement at work. She's about 50 now and is a stressed/anxious person by nature. She's got her shit together though. No debt. Home is paid for. Husband does fine with work too. She lost both her parents in the past 7 years. Reminded her that she has her shit together and her and her sister have inherited their parents' home and can resell it for 1.2 - 1.4 million, per market value, in the future. She thinks she needs to work right up to 65 ... needs to maximize her benefits and eventual pension (CPP / MPP in Canada). Told her why not just enjoy life? Why not decrease your stressors and retire a bit early (say 57 - 60)? Invest the inheritance properly. I think she thinks she'll be bored in retirement or burn through the money. She's done a shitload of international travel the past 20 - 25 years. She'd probably continue that (but think she needs to have that job to fall back upon). Again reminded her that life is short. Mentioned to her my uncle passed at 58 of a massive heart attack 1 month into retirement in '97. Worked nearly 40 years for the same company. Things like that. Live your life ...

Agreed. She's either gonna settle locally or in Seattle. Doesn't want to move too far later in life. Agreed re: family inheritance. Glad to see my dad and aunt get along when they handled their parents' affairs in late-2006 and early-2008 when both parents passed. Coworker and her sister are thankfully getting along. Zero issues there. Her older sister recently retired and is Type A (single, unmarried). Coworker recognizes that and knows her sister's more of a decision-maker by nature. Not going to ruffle any feathers. They'll split things 50-50 in the future. Have heard some horror stories with inheritance for sure. Some other relatives and friends of the family. Brings out the worst in families when people aren't getting along as is - without even factoring the financial aspect coming into play. Causes all types of issues.

Ariana Grande Gets Candid About Mac Miller and ‘Distraction’ Pete Davidson in Vogue Interview
By Zoe Haylock@zoe_alliyah

Ariana Grande has had a painful few years. From the Manchester bombing, to the start and end of a tumultuous relationship with Pete Davidson, to Mac Miller’s devastating death, Ariana Grande has seen her share of heartbreak. But instead of remaining private, she has opened up to Vogue in a new cover story about her experiences to set the record straight and maybe shine a little light.

Before her ex-boyfriend and good friend Mac Miller died, Grande spent the bulk of their relationship fighting for him, warning him, and checking up on him. “By no means was what we had perfect, but, like, fuck,” she recalled. “He was the best person ever, and he didn’t deserve the demons he had. I was the glue for such a long time, and I found myself becoming … less and less sticky. The pieces just started to float away.” Now that he’s gone, the grief is “all-encompassing.” She cried onstage a few times since beginning her Sweetner World Tour, once while in Miller’s hometown. But the tour is part of her plan to “get well soon” by providing a rigid schedule. It’s just hard to sing about such personal moments, including her short, but legendary relationship with Pete Davidson.

After her break up with Mac Miller, Ariana Grande’s friends moved her from Los Angeles to New York for an escape. And then she met Pete: “It was an amazing distraction. It was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic, and I loved him, and I didn’t know him.” The relationship we spent all summer obsessing over, the relationship that launched “big dick energy” was probably just as silly and ridiculous as we made it out to be. If a whirlwind relationship no one can wrap their minds around is what it takes to make Ms. Grande just a little bit happier, we’d write a million relationship timelines.

whirlwind relationships are the norm for people with borderline personality disorder. They will worship the ground you walk on one minute then all of a sudden flip and hate your guts for little to no reason.

It also seems like Ariana grande is just drawn to broken men. For her sake, I hope the next one doesn't break her as well.

A whole episode of Saturday Night Live aired this weekend, and it did not feature Pete Davidson oversharing about his newfound romance with showbiz royalty Margaret Qualley or breaking into the middle of a sketch because Kenan Thompson was there. The season premiere of SNL featured Larry David and Maya Rudolph, but current cast member Pete Davidson was nowhere to be found. The show’s young gun (not to be confused with Machine Gun Kelly, Pete’s BFF) was actually off pursuing another dream of his. He was filming the new Suicide Squad movie with director James Gunn and co-stars Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee, Sean Gunn, Joel Kinnaman, Flula Borg, and Nathan Fillion. And we know this thanks to Gunn’s social-media presence.

On Saturday, the squad (plus Pom Klementieff from Guardians of the Galaxy) saw a screening of Joker in Atlanta. Pete’s role in the new film still remains a mystery, so there is no telling when the prodigal son will return to 30 Rock. But are we that desperate to spend a portion of “Weekend Update” hearing how Andie MacDowell feels about her daughter dating Davidson? We can do that right now. “She has a beautiful relationship with him but I don’t want to step on her relationship too much,” Andie MacDowell told People at Paris Fashion Week. “They have a nice relationship.” That’s Pete Davidson, everyone! From “Weekend Update,” I’m Colin Jost! He’s Michael Che! Good night!

Margaret Qualley Solidifies Her Star Power by Dating Pete Davidson

Are you a white brunette? If so, you may end up being Pete Davidson’s next girlfriend. Don’t ask how; he clearly has his ways. According to Us Weekly’s sources, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actress Margaret Qualley is kicking her feet up with the Saturday Night Live star. And she just so happens to be a white brunette, kind of like, oh, I don’t know, Ariana Grande or Kate Beckinsale, Davidson’s most recent exes. There’s nothing wrong with having a type. I’m just saying if he’s coming to yell on a college campus near you, you may quickly find yourself at his mom’s place on Staten Island, getting ready to go to the SNL after-party.

For right now, Qualley is taking her hot-girl summer all the way into fall. First, a Tarantino film. Next, her film Seberg screens at the Venice Film Festival, where Us sources say the couple will make their red-carpet debut. Showing off the internet’s favorite plaything at a prestigious film exhibition is perhaps the definition of a boss move. Very excited to see the duo courtside at the Knicks, walking through Soho, and in “Page Six.” With every new paparazzi pic, Cazzie David gets to slip further away from this narrative. Be free!

o, Why Wasn’t Pete Davidson on SNL This Week?

Two whole episodes of Saturday Night Live have now aired, and neither featured Pete Davidson oversharing about his newfound romance with showbiz royalty Margaret Qualley or breaking into the middle of a sketch because Kenan Thompson was there. The new season has now featured the likes of Larry David, Maya Rudolph, and even Matthew Broderick, but current cast member Davidson was nowhere to be found. The show’s young gun (not to be confused with Machine Gun Kelly, Pete’s BFF) was actually off pursuing another dream of his. He’s currently filming the new Suicide Squad movie with director James Gunn and co-stars Margot Robbie, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee, Sean Gunn, Joel Kinnaman, Flula Borg, and Nathan Fillion. And we know this thanks to Gunn’s social-media presence.

Last Saturday, the squad saw a screening of Joker in Atlanta. Good night!

Update, October 6: Davidson’s absence was addressed in SNL’s second episode during “Weekend Update,” a segment that had previously indulged Davidson in talking about his personal life. (As opposed to, you know, topical comedy.) “A man who drove his car to a music festival still cannot remember where he parked his car a week after the show,” Colin Jost said during the segment. “Well, we hope you make it back soon, Pete.”

Pete Davidson Returns to SNL After His Trip to the Upside Down
By Trupti Rami

After two whole episodes of Saturday Night Live’s new season aired without Pete Davidson, fans wondered when he would return and Colin Jost joked about his absence. (“A man who drove his car to a music festival still cannot remember where he parked his car a week after the show,” Jost said during last week’s “Weekend Update.”). Recently, we reported that Davidson missed SNL because he was “off pursuing another dream of his” filming the new Suicide Squad movie, but we now know that he was, in fact, in the Upside Down. In host David Harbour’s opening monologue, the Stranger Things star headed backstage only to discover a gate to the Upside Down had suddenly appeared. “Whoever’s behind these doors might need my help,” he tells Kate McKinnon. “I’m going in.” As he winds his way through the corridors, he eventually finds Davidson chilling with a llama. “Is this where you’ve been? In the Upside Down?” he asks. Davidson, with a rootlike tendril in his hands, replies, “Yeah, dude. It’s lit.”
Later on, Davidson drops by “Weekend Update” to comment on the rise in some STD cases because of dating apps and to clap back at Jost for making fun of him in last week’s episode. “I don’t know if you’ve seen the Joker,” he says to Jost, “but I think you should start being waaay nicer to me.”

Pete Davidson’s First Netflix Comedy Special Will Debut This Month
By Megh Wright@megh_wright

Between performing on Saturday Night Live, starring in a movie about his own life, appearing in Suicide Squad, and handing out NDAs before his live stand-up shows, Pete Davidson has somehow found the time to put out a comedy special. Netflix just announced that Davidson will star in his first stand-up special for the streaming network this month, which is titled Pete Davidson: Alive From New York. The special was filmed at the Gramercy Theatre in New York and debuts on Netflix in just a little under two weeks on Tuesday, February 25.
Along with the premiere-date announcement, Netflix also released a trailer for the special. It mostly follows our proposed rule that stand-up-special trailers should just be one joke, and the joke in this case is that Davidson is very suspicious about a very specific kind of gay friend he calls Kyle. “It’s that gay dude that’ll run up on your girlfriend and squeeze her boobs and slap her ass and be like, ‘Damn girl, you look great!” Davidson says. “I don’t find that fuckin’ funny — like at all. I’m sorry. Like, I’m all for the gayness — it doesn’t mean I’m against gayness — it’s just: You just get to slap ass on a technicality?” Check out the trailer for yourself below, then watch the rest when Alive From New York premieres later this month.

Pete Davidson’s New Comedy Special Is Alive, Barely
By Kathryn VanArendonk@kvanaren
Pete Davidson in Alive From New York. Photo: Netflix
In his new Netflix special Alive From New York, Pete Davidson is working through it.
There are two things to unpack about that. The first is what the “it” is: There’s a whole realm of stuff Davidson is obsessing over and considering and responding to and pushing back against. For Davidson fans and skeptics, the things he’s forthrightly working through here are going to be a draw no matter how they’re presented. He talks about all the things that have made him famous in the last several years: his relationship with Ariana Grande, his work on SNL, becoming the BDE Ur-text. He talks about Lorne Michaels and doing a lot of drugs, and he tells stories about his father, a firefighter who died on 9/11. Alive From New York is alternatingly sad and dishy, with long swings through resentful, naughty, vulnerable, and cavalier.
There’s some score settling, especially when Davidson talks about the blowback to a joke he made on SNL about U.S. representative Dan Crenshaw, who wears a patch over one eye. There’s some frustration, too, about feeling at the mercy of Twitter crowds — Davidson has to talk about the aftermath of the Crenshaw situation in this special, he says, because he’s not allowed on Twitter anymore. Later, he makes an (underwhelming) joke about starving kids in Africa and senses some pushback from the crowd. “I like how half of you are like, ‘That’s funny!’ and the other half are like, ‘I dunno if you can do that, dude,’” Davidson says. “I guess we’ll check Twitter, the decider of all.”

25-pete-davidson-alive-from-new-york.w700.h467.jpg

All of this makes Alive From New York noteworthy, in the way that any major celebrity interview can be noteworthy when a public figure reveals things about themselves. Davidson opens with one of the strongest pieces of the hour, a story about Louis C.K. trying to get him fired from SNL. He has a long section about getting dumped by one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Davidson has a lot to work through, and unlike most stories about being dumped or almost getting fired, it’s going to be immediately interesting to a large audience just by virtue of the content and regardless of how it’s told.
The second thing to unpack, though, is less about what Davidson is working through and more about how. It’s good that he’s working through stuff, and it’s probably also good that he’s doing it by working — getting up in front of an audience and figuring out how to turn all this stuff into material. He is positioning himself in relation to all of it, and he’s hammering it into a story.
But while Alive From New York is made and performed by someone who is without a doubt working through it, this is not a set by someone who has worked through it. Davidson may be hammering all of this into a narrative that he can use. He may be stitching together all the pieces of his life and examining them for the odd, remarkable, tragic, difficult, unlikely events they are. But as an hour of comedy, the work is not finished.
He lurches from one section to another, with transitions that could seem purposely unartful and instead feel slapdash. He cannot stop himself from giggling at his own work, which can come off as charming and sincere for more controlled performers (see: Lil Rel in Live in Crenshaw), but for Davidson it’s more like when your friend remembers a funny story that’s not funny now because you really had to be there. It all feels raw and under-formed, even in the sections where there’s plainly more polish. It’s baggy. A trailer for the special features a joke about the gay guy every straight guy suspects is not actually gay, and when Davidson actually performs the longer version of the joke in the set, I found myself wishing it’d been cut down to the trailer version, streamlined and edited more closely so the punch hit harder.
It’s not that there’s no appeal in the way Davidson performs the set. His shoulders are tight but his limbs are loose, and the comedy feels the same: anxious, jittery, but also casual, sliding haphazardly from idea to idea, shrugging when something doesn’t work and moving on. It’s that watching Alive From New York makes me long for the ghost version of this special you can feel lurking somewhere underneath, the one where Davidson commits more fully to sharpness or takes a step back and embraces a warm bro-y glow. This lukewarm middle ground doesn’t serve him or the material.
After the last few years Davidson has had — really, after the last half decade — it’s not unreasonable to see Alive From New York for exactly what the title advertises. It’s proof of life, proof that he’s still a comedian and not a punch line, proof that he can tell the story rather than be just the story everyone keeps talking about. It’s good that he’s working through it. It’s too bad it still feels like a rough draft.

King of Staten Island director Judd Apatow gives first in-depth interview about Pete Davidson's tribute to 'heroes'

"This was [Pete's] way of talking about heroes and how important they are — and we see that every day now," Apatow tells EW.

It's Pete Davidson's turn to get the Judd Apatow bump.
Over the past two decades, no one has fostered comedic talent like Apatow. You can point to his work on television, whether it was discovering James Franco and Seth Rogen for Freaks and Geeks or championing Lena Dunham with Girls. Or you can look at the movie stars he's made, between The 40-Year-Old Virgin with Steve Carell, Knocked Up with Rogen, and Trainwreck with Amy Schumer. Now he's putting the spotlight on Davidson with The King of Staten Island.
Directed by Apatow and co-written by him, Davidson, and Dave Sirus, the film stars the Saturday Night Live breakout as Scott, a burnout still living at home and investing all his time into watching cartoons and smoking weed with his friends. Scott has never quite been able to cope with the loss of his firefighter father as a child, and those issues bubble to the surface in new ways when his mom (Marisa Tomei) starts dating Ray (Bill Burr), who happens to be on the job, just like his dad. The story is a personal one for Davidson, as his own father, Scott Davidson, was a firefighter and died on 9/11.

While most high-profile summer films have been postponed, Universal recently announced plans for King of Staten Island to stick with its original release date of June 12 and be rolled out via video on demand instead of waiting for theaters to reopen.
To coincide with the Thursday night launch of the Staten Island trailer, EW had an exclusive chat with Apatow about planting his flag early on Davidson, feeling "terrified" of taking on someone else's experiences, and paying tribute to all the people risking their lives to help others.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What's the origin story behind The King of Staten Island? Why was Pete someone who you wanted to build a film around?
JUDD APATOW:
When I was working with Amy Schumer on Trainwreck and we were casting, I asked her if there was anyone I should know about and she said, 'There's this guy Pete Davidson who's 20 years old and ridiculously funny." And we cast him in the movie in a cameo because we just wanted to plant our flag and say, "We knew he was funny before anybody else." When I don't have anything great for someone, sometimes I just try and put them in the movie somewhere, because I believe in them but don't have a great part yet. And then he was so funny that Bill Hader said to him the next day, "I'm going to tell Lorne Michaels he should put you on Saturday Night Live," and then Pete auditioned for Lorne and got Saturday Night Live.

With you launching Pete in this way, there are obviously parallels to you doing the same for Amy, Steve Carell, and Seth Rogen in their big film breakouts. What is it about helping take these smart and interesting comedic voices to the next level that you're drawn to?
I just think when people are young that they have a lot to say. They haven't burned through all their ideas, and they're usually very passionate about certain stories from their lives. And it's always really funny to help people define how they would work as a leading man or a leading woman. It's very different when somebody is on their 35th movie, so it's just exciting for me to be on the ground floor.

In addition to directing, you co-wrote the film with Pete and Dave Sirus. Was there a balance of wanting to pull from Pete’s life and experiences but also not wanting to turn this into Pete essentially playing Pete?
The movie is an imagining of what Pete's life might have been like if he never found comedy. Comedy really was his savior, it gave him direction. And in the movie he's someone who is flailing about, not sure what he should do with his life. He wants to be a tattoo artist but he really hasn't tried that hard. A lot of what we discussed was how when you have a loss in your family it brings up all of these issues that take a long time to work through. By writing this movie and thinking through his life, he hopefully had a cathartic experience trying to let go of a lot of the obstacles that have complicated his life.
Considering how personal this movie is to Pete, with the elements of his father, did you feel any extra responsibility taking that on and doing it justice?
I'm always terrified of asking someone to use their life in a movie and having it come out terrible. I'm terrified when I make my movies that have experiences from my life. I'm nervous for Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon [Apatow produced their film The Big Sick]. I'm nervous for Amy Schumer. But I do think that is the best kind of movie. You can tell when people aren't just generating some high-concept comedy idea and are revealing something that is important to them, that is true from their life. There's definitely a responsibility, and I think that's what keeps me on my toes, the terror of humiliating myself and them.
KEVIN MAZUR / UNIVERSAL PICTURES
You mentioned putting Pete in Trainwreck with a very small role, and this is by far his biggest movie role to date. Even he has joked about how he’s not on SNL to be acting in sketches, he’s there to tell jokes on "Weekend Update." So what was it like working with Pete the actor, someone who is still sharpening his craft?
When we started, I didn't know what the level of his acting would be. I only found out when we were doing auditions and rehearsing. I feel like it's a very comfortable space for him. He is a very strong actor and is very willing to be vulnerable in the scenes. He is very subtle, he's not trying too hard. There's a word we use sometimes, which is "sweaty." Sometimes people are just working it and you feel that effort, and Pete's not like that at all. It's all very authentic.
All your movies have these deep, hilarious supporting casts. Here, you surrounded Pete with everyone from Marisa Tomei to Bill Burr to Steve Buscemi to your daughter Maude. As you mentioned with putting Pete in Trainwreck, is finding funny people for these pop-ins or more extended roles one of your favorite parts of making a film?
I really enjoy casting. I try to build it around the lead. Pete was very involved in all of those choices. Bill Burr was someone who has been a friend and mentor to him for a long time. They already had a special dynamic we could tap into. Bel Powley is a good friend of his, and I felt like their admiration for each other would help with their onscreen chemistry. Steve Buscemi was a fireman before his acting career took off, and we all look up to him, he's one of our heroes. I thought that Maude would be really strong as his sister, who is the opposite of him and dealing with her trauma by trying to excel in life. She's getting great grades and going off to college, and challenges Pete on all of his stuff and all of his issues. Marisa Tomei did a cameo in Trainwreck and is someone I've always wanted to work with. She really is the heart of the movie. A lot of the movie is about someone who has not looked for a relationship because she's worried about her son, and she starts dating for the first time but is really scared of not being there for Pete's character.
So there's all sorts of people who we love in the movie. I loved Moisés Arias since Hannah Montana. He used to always make me laugh so hard. I used to talk about it to my kids, I'd be like, "What is with that guy? He is so riotously funny!" Ricky Velez is a fantastic comedian and one of Pete's best friends. Pamela Adlon is someone who I've been a fan of, her show [Better Things] is brilliant, and we were lucky to get her. It's always so fun to try and surround yourself with the best possible people.
There’s so much uncertainty right now around literally everything, including movie theaters and the film industry. The majority of summer movies have essentially been pushed indefinitely or to dates that could just be wishful thinking. Even if this isn't the release you anticipated for your film, can you find excitement in that Staten Island will be seen now, and maybe at time when people will most connect with it?
We had two choices: We could have waited a really long time to release the movie, or put it out right now on video on demand. Obviously we love showing our comedies in movie theaters and that's something that I plan to do always, but our movie is about some of what is happening right now. Pete wanted to make a movie that was a tribute to his family; his sister is a nurse, his mom has been a nurse her entire life, his father was a firefighter who lost his life on 9/11. And this was his way of talking about heroes and how important they are — and we see that every day now. Nurses, doctors, people working in grocery stores, policemen, first responders, fireman, delivery people, anybody putting themselves at risk for others and helping keep the world running. And this movie is partially about these people who we all look up to.
