Barry Keoghan shares The Batman audition tape that landed him the Joker

The actor originally sent an unsolicited tape for the Riddler role, but fate had other plans.

By Nick RomanoOctober 04, 2022 at 10:50 AM EDT

Barry Keoghan is living proof that sometimes clowning around can lead to big things.
The actor from Eternals and The Killing of a Sacred Deer shared his full audition tape for The Batman for GQ's cover story. The tape has existed in various forms online but hasn't been widely spread.
Keoghan made the tape simply because he heard that The Batman was happening and he wanted to be a part of it. He was originally vying for the role of the Riddler, but at the time it had already been filled by Jonah Hill. Paul Dano would later take over the role.

Keoghan is seen donning a black shirt, pants, bowler hat, and eyeliner with green suspenders. He emerges from an elevator with cane in hand and disappears around a corner. The actor emerges later with a bloody handprint smeared on his face.

Nothing came of this tape initially. Keoghan tells GQ he met with Dylan Clark, one of the film's producers, and urged him to watch the tape, but he didn't hear back for four months. Then he received a call from his agent one night in New York. "The Batman wants you to play the Joker — but you cannot tell anyone," the agent said, according to Keoghan.

Keoghan's Joker appears for mere moments at the end of The Batman, laughing maniacally with Dano's Riddler in prison at Arkham Asylum. But the actor shot a now-deleted scene with Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight.

Keoghan says he hasn't been formally asked to return as Joker for The Batman sequel, but adds, "As soon as that call comes, I'm there man, I'm there."

I don’t think we gonna get a definitive idea on what Gunn/Safran are gonna do, until after the next 3 movies debut next year.

Which means it won’t be until 2024.

We will just have to wait and see…and hope whatever they do kicks ass!

They need to just do they thing

Gunn need to chill on the tweets.

I like the transparency but that may come back to bite him.

Ignore these fans COMPLETELY

they already making death threats on him and his wife

Just lock in and fix this mess.

I do think they should have kept Cavill.

But I believe in them two guys.

‘The Penguin’ Series at HBO Max Casts Clancy Brown

By Joe Otterson
March 3, 2023 2:30pm PT

HBO Max’s “The Batman” spinoff series “The Penguin” has cast Clancy Brown in a recurring role, Variety has learned.

Brown joins a cast that includes series lead Colin Farrell, who will reprise the role of Oswald “The Penguin” Cobblepot from “The Batman, as well as Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O’Connell.

Brown will appear as Salvatore Maroni, a notorious Gotham City crime boss. The character was referenced repeatedly in “The Batman,” as his arrest by corrupt Gotham officials and the collapse of his criminal empire allowed for Carmine Falcone’s organization to rise. Maroni has previously been portrayed onscreen by actors like David Zayas in “Gotham” at Fox and by Eric Roberts in “The Dark Knight.”

Brown is not completely unknown to the DC universe, as he has repeatedly voiced supervillain Lex Luthor in numerous animated projects and video games over the years. Brown is also well known for voicing Mr. Krabs in the hit Nickelodeon cartoon “Spongebob Squarepants.” In the live-action world, Brown has recently appeared in shows like “Dexter: New Blood” and the film “Promising Young Woman.” He is also known for his roles in films like “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Highlander,” while he will appear in the upcoming film “John Wick: Chapter 4.”

He is repped by CAA and Pop Art Management.

“The Penguin” will consist of eight episodes. The series is said to continue the story of the film. It is believed to take place in the immediate aftermath of the events of “The Batman.” Milioti will star as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone.

Lauren LeFranc is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner on “The Penguin.” “The Batman” director Matt Reeves executive produces via 6th & Idaho, while Dylan Clark executive produces via Dylan Clark Productions. Farrell executive produces in addition to starring. Craig Zobel is executive producing and directing the first three episodes. 6th & Idaho’s Daniel Pipski also serves as executive producer, as does Bill Carraro, with Rafi Crohn co-executive producing. Warner Bros. Television is the studio. 6th & Idaho is currently under an overall deal at WBTV. The series is based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane and Bill Finger.
