How the Electoral College Was Nearly Abolished in 1970

"On September 18, 1969, the U.S. House of Representatives voted by an overwhelming 338 to 70 to send a constitutional amendment to the Senate that would have dismantled the Electoral College, the indirect system by which Americans elect the president and vice president.
“It was the only time in American history that a chamber of Congress actually approved an amendment to abolish the Electoral College,” says Jesse Wegman, a member of the New York Times editorial board and author of Let the People Pick the President: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral College.

The House vote, which came in the wake of an extraordinarily close presidential election, mirrored national sentiment about scrapping an electoral system that allowed a candidate to win the presidency even while losing the popular vote. A 1968 Gallup poll found that 80 percent of Americans believed it was time to elect the nation’s highest office by direct popular vote.

Yet just a year later, the Senate bill that would have ended the Electoral College was dead in the water, filibustered by a cadre of Southern lawmakers intent on preserving the majority’s grip on electoral power in their states. Despite widespread bipartisan support for the amendment in both large and small states, the Senate came five votes shy of breaking the filibuster.

“It was a remarkable effort,” says Wegman of the late 1960s movement that came “painfully close” to killing the Electoral College. “We’ve never seen anything like it before, and I fear we may never see anything like it again.”

If it wasn't for Covid I would be saying that too. After seeing how badly Trump has handled this pandemic though I'll admit that I was wrong!

Yesterday I was talking to my daughter who lives in Canada. Out there the infection rate is minuscule. They still enforce social distancing and masks in some public spaces, but other than that everything is open.

Then I walk down Market Street and see nearly half the stores and restaurants boarded up which is almost unheard of before Christmas. I used to play three or four DJ gigs a week and now I've only played two since the end of March.

The scariest part is that SF has done better than almost everywhere else in the country and far better than any place that voted for Trump.
That why I try to tell people to vote for every position on the ballot no matter how big or small the position is. Participate, vote, and hold elected officials accountable.

What does one have to do with the other though?

My life is better now than it was in 2016, but that's not because of Donald Trump, if anything it's in spite of him. Especially in 2020.
People mostly only care about themselves. The poll theory is that they tell people what they think they want to hear. No one wants to come across as selfish. Can't tell the experts fucking shit though. People are selfish. So they lie and then they vote selfishly.

And man, folks can't say the sky is falling and have damn near everyone doing the same as four years ago. Dems basically ran a sky is falling candidate and will barely survive this. :smh: They better learn a lesson for 2024.

300,000 lost votes in PA by USPS. Fed judge demands to find them. USPS says suck my dick. CEO? Louis Dejoy - gave 1.2 million to Trump campaign.

It seems this was their sneak way to steal the election but it looks like joe didn't need PA.

America just as corrupt as poverty stricken countries.

It would be hard to rig the numbers in MI and NV that's left. It would be too obvious a switch.

Nevada said it won't count again until Thursday morning even though they have all the ballots and the results might take until next Tuesday.

Michigan is accounted for, press is waiting for right time to deliver news and build suspense.

That does need to stop. Because without Covid no one feels like everything is in shambles if they can go through life normally. Some things are terrible to us here because we know how things should work. The average voter doesn't give a shit nor do they care about politics until it is time to vote.

Whatever Trump did to get more Black votes than he did in 2016, didn't work on the younger crowd. Waiting to see a full breakdown by age.

I been shitting on the zennials for a while, but that stopped this summer during the racial reckoning and seeing them wake up and mobilize the way they have...I'm proud of them, they're gonna be some good footsoldiers for us millenials/younger gen Xers right now and good leaders in the future

People are supposed to vote for their interests whether they're selfish or not. That's not the issue.

my point was that there are a lot of people whose lives improved within the last 4 years. some of them got married, some quit drinking, some got out of jail, some finished college, some got promotions, a lucky few even won the lottery. in my case I was able to turn DJing from a side hustled into a full-time business back in 2017.

Donald Trump had absolutely nothing to do with any of those things so why give him the credit?

This isn't rocket science man. If you quit drinking and got your shit together, that happens whether Miss Piggy or Jesus or Trump is in office.

The shit you're saying can go for every fucking election. A person is supposed to win regardless of who is in the white house.

It's not like people will give the president credit. Perhaps they saying he didn't get in their way. Again, that can apply to any of the presidents.

The point is polls aren't goin to reflect how people feel. You can tell people they supposed to feel bad, but what if their lives are fine? Regardless of who is in office.

By the criminal Corporation called the United States which is being controlled by

Fleet street England by way of the Vatican..

Only Moorish Americans are the true and only absolute American.

All pale faces are here illegally and are

Hybrid Europeans..

Who are the children of the invaders that spreaded disease and committed genocide on the True Americans

So called African Americans..

America is our Nation
Africa is our foundation

You are supposed to win regardless, but I can honestly say that Obama's presidency gave me tangible benefits that were crucial in being able to make a life in this country. Donald Trump's mishandling of covid made my life a lot more difficult.
